Thrilling story.
Really like Michael Gresham character, but in this novel he is not defending anybody. Earlier books was far more exciting, this one looks like the last one in this series. Troubled ex-husband and his very needy, sexually active ex-wife. She's is prosecutor and having relationship with many prosecutors in the office. Question is who was the one that killed her in aisle 11? Ending is known for the start, but how they're going to prove that kept me turning the pages.

Ellsworth tells an interesting story. He has a series of murder mysteries featuring Michael Gresham and his daughter Annie. Annie is a 12 year old savant who works for the FBI has a profiler. In this story someone is killing lawyers and through several twists and turns Michael ends up a suspect. A new character, Joy Heavens, is introduced in this book. She’s hired to help Michael. These books hold one’s interest without a lot of gore and excessive violence. A good weekend read

What did I like? Wow, a legal thriller with lots of action! What more could you like about a book? Oh, I guess if you throw in a 12-year-old savant, a grocery store killing, a little scandal on the side, you would have a great read.

Linda Havens was the ex-wife of Congressman Peter Heavens. Now she has become a full time caregiver for her mother, who has dementia. She was going crazy in this role. She is a lawyer and she needs to find an outlet. Linda’s friend, Harry Barrows, a DC Metro Police Officer, talks to the U. S. Attorney, Niles Boudreaux about Linda Heavens. The interview was set and USA Boudreaux hires Linda. Eventually, Linda becomes a girlfriend and later marries Harry Barrows. However, Harry’s jealousy ruins the short-lived marriage. Another Michael Grisham novel! Although I had not read the first book in the Annie profiler series, it was not necessary for this book. Being a prosecutor, Michael is assigned the case of a fellow attorney murdered in a grocery store. He ends up being accused of the murder and is prosecuted.
This was an easy read. With a couple of twists and turns, the real murderer is exposed - it was who I thought it was. Still didn’t take away from the overall story.
I look forward to reading more of John Ellsworth books.

Always unpredictable and worthy of five stars
Every John Ellsworth book has been my favorite. I'm always amazed by how the story starts out calm and easy to follow....then, bombshell after bombshell starts dropping making me have to keep reading far into the night until I get to a calm spot again. This book was the best example of that. So many twists and so many possible suspects. So far my favorite of Ellsworth's books! Excellent escape book.

"Extraordinary, Edge-of-Your Seat Thriller"
This outstanding legal thriller is one you'll not be able to put down. There are many twists and turns to keep you guessing ... and you'll never guess who the real killer is of a woman lawyer. This story is another triumph for John Ellsworth. I love his very creative novels. They keep me well entertained. I'm looking forward to Book 8 of this series due to be released in March. I've already pre-ordered it.

Full of holes
Story was entertaining it just made no sense and had hugh holes in the story. The main character was shot with the murder weapon and no one seemed to care who shot him and where they got the gun. They got to trial and the defense did not know on what day the murder occurred. They never asked the suspect if he had an aliby. Then they tied the story up in two pages potentially a good book, poorly executed

Another really good story by Ellsworth.
I would have given this a five if Michael hadn't been involved as a suspect in this story. I think it would have been better if it was just Michael being the kick-ass attorney that we who have read this series from book one know this character to be.

Very disappointing.
Waste of time. Ending was extremely rushed and not at all surprising. Cut short and left me wondering why I had b bothered at all. Will not read another book by this author

Ok, I'm not finished with this book, but just a few thoughts. The first few chapters leading up to the murder seemed rushed, like they were written way too fast. I started liking the book better after Michael Gresham appeared, then when the investigation started, the plot sounded familiar. Lawyer in charge of investigating the murder of a colleague was having an affair with her (as was his boss) It reminded me a lot of "Presumed Innocent" by Scott Turow. An excellent book (and movie starring Harrison Ford)
I will finish the book and add to my review. I have read a lot of book by this author but I definitely prefer his earlier books.
***Update after the book is finished. Although admittedly the last part of the book is a real page turner, please be prepared to suspend all common sense. Ok, I realize that when Michael was accused of the murder, the death penalty wasn't on table; however, what attorney in his right mind asks a lawyer with NO criminal experience to defend him on Murder One charges? In Ohio for a death penalty case the attorney has to be "certified" to be able to defend someone facing the death penalty, so not just any criminal lawyer fresh out of law school can take the case. Are we to believe just because Michael Gresham wasn't facing death he lost all common sense? And, Annie "saved him" with her idea that anyone who watches cop shows or reads police procedurals would have thought of long before the trial? Sorry, but I am very disappointed with this book, especially since I've read & enjoyed many, many other books by this author.

need a little more drama
I couldn’t give this book 5 stars. I was so disappointed in Verona for putting Michael and his kids b4 her dying son. I lost all respect for her as a mother. Even though she couldn’t save him, she still could’ve spent his last few months with him to cherish all the memories. It really hurt me as a mother of 4 to see this mother abandon her duties as a mother. I take being a mother seriously. I put nothing or nobody over my 4 brats and they’re fully adults. After reading Verona’s decision to not go to her dying son side, I lost my enthusiastic about this book. And author, please no more marriage for Michael after this one. Another thing, author, Michael age keeps flip flopping in each book. And why Michael be acting so needy when it comes to women? Like he can’t survive without a woman. Marcel to the rescue. I love me some Marcel.

Amazing!
I love this author. I love his style of writing. The words just flow and feel like silk. If this man was the kind of attorney that he writes about I would have loved watching him in a court of law. I wish I knew what his success rate was in the trials he participated in. His storylines are amazing. The immediately pull you in and keep you there until the very end. There are many twists and turns. I have read the books back to back and I am excited for the next one.
The characters are very well developed and believable. The dialogue flows smoothly. The editing is clean. I would recommend this series to anyone that is interested in murder mysteries and courtroom drama. I am off to read the next one.

A long story that goes nowhere
This was my first Ellsworth novel. It will be my last.
I would like to say that jumping around from different viewpoints or several years in advance was the most disconcerting part of this plot. Sadly, that's far from the issue.
In one paragraph the viewpoint switches from third person to first person and back again. No discernible reason for this. Just sloppy.
There are red herrings thrown in, over and over, the same ones! Does this author think readers have no memory? This was exceedingly tedious.
This readers expectations of a "legal thriller" never were met.

Without a doubt the best book I’ve read this year
A dramatic story line with real character developed without having to read the previous books in the series. The back stories of each character makes the reader see the characters and emphasize with them as the plot developed.The reality of our flawed legal system is realistically displayed. Powerful people in the justice system can and do create a plausible case of guilt around anyone they wish to target and how easily innocent people can and have been punished for crimes they never committed.

Decent Legal Thriller
I am not as familiar with the Gresham series as I am with the authors other works, having only read a few. I must admit that initially I was underwhelmed.
However at some point I realized I was having trouble putting the book down. At times the plot is a little far fetched, stretching my credibility. However Annie is so interesting and learning about her condition so fascinating that I felt compelled to keep reading. There are also a few interesting twists in the plot.
Still not my favorite Ellsworth character but a decent read.

Really enjoyed the the crime/legal/mystery novel
Before this book I enjoyed reading the Jack Daniels mystery novels until they all seemed similar to myself as the reader. This is the first book I have read by this author and it had it all, mystery, suspense, and a murder in which the main character was implicated as being the killer. Satisfying conclusion to the novel and highly recommended

Formulaic and unrealistic
I have read the entire series to this point. They just keep getting stranger. People are killed with abandon but characters seem to brush it off. He's still in love with his dead wife but he's proposing to the Russian woman who let him pretend to be her husband but he is the father of the dead woman's fetus. He gets shot but not killed. Once again, he gets framed with the murder weapon. The stories exceed my ability to suspend my disbelief.

Another great read from the Michael Gresham legal series.
Interesting characters with lots of plot twists and turns. As always, John Ellsworth has you pulling for Michael to somehow succeed and escape a dire predicament he has once again found himself in.
I enjoyed Annie. She is such a special, unusual, character. I embraced Michael's attitude to accept her, and love her, where she is.

Legal thriller that goes fast
I saw this recommended by Amazon and decided to give it a try. Michael Gresham is an interesting character and his adopted daughter Annie is one of a kind. I gave the book three stars since it was too easy to figure out exactly what was going to happen before it did. Still an entertaining and fast read.

Not his bedt
This book showed a vulnerability to the lead character that I haven't seen in previous novels. A weakness that isn't normally captured. He made poor choices (choosing an inexperienced attorney for a criminal defense, for example) . Didn't like that! Also this book focused exclusively on Annie and ignored his biological children.

Great book
I almost didn't download this book bit I'm glad I did. Thoroughly enjoyable. Great mystery, and although I thought I knew who the killer was, I was glad to see that I was correct. I'll read more of John Ellsworth. I find him to be a good writer and an easy read and I didn't want to put the book down.

Over and Over
This book us excellent I have read it at least two times and it was just as good the second time. What a creative Author John Ellsworth is. This book will excite you and keep you guessing how it will end. Such a great character Michael Gresham is as well as the other characters, such as Verona, Arnie and Barons and let's not forget Marcus. Highly recommend.

Utterly disappointing
Sorry. I can't even finish this book. Its terrible. I have read all six of the previous Michael Grisham books and absolutely devoured them. They were well written and hard to put down. I can't believe this was written by the same author. Very disappointing!!

Ellsworth continues his literary excellence with another bullseye!
I gave this book a five star rating even though it deserves a much higher rating I couldn't believe how riveting this storyline was from page one, I'm really excited about this author author's writing skills. Got to go now so I can sample more books by Ellsworth!

Why did I read it
First off the book is full of errors (misused pronouns etc., and implausible situations. Second the plot gambles around and suddenly the mystery resolved- it seemed even the author got bored with it. It’s not a bad who done it but messy. Third, the characters, although plentiful, were not believable. This author won’t be on my reading list. .

different style and I love it
I liked this writers style of not too much detail, he told an awesome story without boring me with what color the paint is on the walls. This is my first book by John Ellsworth and about the 6th in a series, I’ll now have to start at the beginning of the series. I choose the because of the title.

Love the character of Michael Gresham. He's usually a hard hitting defender, but this time, his own freedom is at stake when he's framed for a murder he didn't commit.
Fast moving page turner. I couldn't put it down!
Highly recommended.
