Record of Blood

Rate this book
An honorable man with a bloody past he can only remember in part, and a woman dead in the eyes of the world, but all too alive.

A confessed murderer, and a missing body lures Isobel Kingston into the night, but she finds far more than she bargains for on the foggy dunes. Ambushed and rendered unconscious, she wakes to find herself at the mercy of brutal men. Desperate, she plays her last card: she threatens her captors with the wrath of Atticus Riot. To her surprise, Riot's very name strikes terror into the men, and Isobel begins to wonder what she really knows about the enigmatic man.

As Atticus Riot searches for Isobel, regret hounds his every step, and the voice of his dead partner, Zephaniah Ravenwood, pulls him into the past, making him look at events long buried and uncover truths that he's tried hard to forget. When Isobel's trail leads to an old enemy, he's forced to confront his nightmares, and the aching truth that he isn't the man he thought he was.

I love this series as it has well defined characters and interesting storylines. Historical mystery/romance are a pleasant way for me to learn history and this series does this with ease. The plot gives us Riot's back story and what a story it is. The reason it not a 5* is there is a dual timeline, and I don't care for those (so it is a personal preference). It does end on a cliff hanger, and I have the next book already! Read this series if you want to learn about the early days of San Franciso, the Chinese slave trade, political corruption and those working to reform it with a great mystery thrown in!

In Record of Blood by Sabrina Flynn - third book in The Ravenhurst Mystery Series - Atticus Riot and Isobel Saavedra Amsel (formerly Kingston) are taking the next step in their slow-burn journey to mutual attraction.

So many demons to slay in this book as we focus on Atticus’ troubled past. There are flashbacks to the lead up of the murder of his partner and mentor Zephaniah Ravenwood and we finally get some answers to what happened. The mystery is solid. We dive into Chinatown, the Tong wars, Chinese slave girls and the people who risk their lives to save them. So much love for Isobel who really gets knocked around in this one, but she is a tough cookie. The author has produced such a great cast of characters. I love all of them.

I absolutely love how this series is progressing. It’s so well researched, the author’s knowledge of San Francisco’s rich mutli-cultural history really shines. There is so much period detail to savor and just the right amount of darkness and grit.

The fabulous narration of Sarah Mollo-Christensen really brings that last bit of excellence to the table. I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone do male voices that well (and her kids are fantastic too). Love her to bits!

Available on Scribd. Don’t miss out!

Record of Blood begins with a missing horse and a disappearing corpse. It then careens headlong onto a kidnapping, missing girls, Tong wars, and recovered memories making this third book in the Ravenwood Mysteries series a smashing page-turner.

Sabrina Flynn has put 1900 San Francisco vividly on the page while continuing to develop her intriguing characters of Bel and Riot, two unique individuals who are, against all reason, drawn together. Their banter and prickly attraction are so well-written the reader can't help but fall in love with them, and this series.

Heart-stopping action, well-developed characters, revelations from the past, and a plot with more twists and turns than a Coney Island rollercoaster meld expertly together, making Record of Blood a read worthy of any mystery fan. It is a book that leaves the reader breathless, satisfied, and yet begging for more by the last page.

If you've read the first two books, you'll be excited to hear that we get to delve into Riot's past in this book. If you haven't read the first two, you don't know what you're missing!

The blend of forward progression for our characters and intriguing backstory made for a perfectly paced adventure that sets us up for more stories to come. Loved it! The best in the series so far!

4.5 stars. I think I liked this one even more because Bel has joined forces with Riot to solve very personal cases and isn't out running around separate from him as much.
It is so interesting, how the author has brought to life the history of San Francisco in the early 1900's. Its not something I take lightly, all her research wrapped into a compelling story and plot.

It doesn't hurt that the characters are interesting, flawed and driven. Neither Bel or Riot would be interesting without their personal trauma and it's fun to see the kids at Ravenswood join in the adventure. And finally- love and acceptance of each other.

Peppered throughout are tidbits of humor and humanity.
Highlights & Spoilers:
Bel-
As children, she and Lotario had tried to follow their older brothers everywhere. Merrik and Vicilia were particularly plagued. And in their efforts to keep the twins at home, the brothers had taken to tying them up whenever they were ready to sneak out.
As a result, Lotario and Isobel had learned to escape almost everything. Eventually.
-------------
Mack snorted. “I can tell you don’t think very highly of me.”
“Do you blame me?”
He chuckled. “I can be charming.”
“I thought you were already making the attempt,” she retorted.
“That tongue of yours makes up for your ‘run over by a wagon’ appearance.”
“I’m flattered.” She smiled, and meant it.

Tim-
“I’ll fetch a surgeon.”
“Do you have one that will keep his mouth shut?” she asked.
Tim looked at her, eyes dancing with wild amusement. “This ain’t our first dance, girl.” He stomped over to a bench, shrugged into a heavy coat, stuck bare feet in rubber boots, and slipped through the doors.
Isobel looked at Riot. “He’s forgot his trousers.”
“Not the first time.” He sounded tired, defeated.

Riot-
“You are too charming, by far, Riot.”
“It’s not charm; it’s simple truth.”
“Pure charm,” she persisted.
“Was that your answer? That I’m too charming?”
“I suppose, for now.” Her voice held a smile, and she leaned into him as they walked. “Now what have you decided about me?”
“That I love you.” The words were calm and matter-of-fact, leaving no doubt, but then she already knew it in her heart. Those three words were simply an answer; not a declaration.
“You must be delirious.”

And their new found wards-
“Which viper should we start with?”
“I intend to talk to Jin. Now that we know more, perhaps she’ll confirm his story, or at least deny it.”
“That’s harsh, Riot. I wouldn’t call her a viper, precisely. She’s more like a red-eyed rabbit with a good kick and large teeth.”
He looked sideways at her. “I think you’re growing fond of your stray.”
“What’s not to love?” Isobel asked dryly.

"A story reminiscent of Sherlock Holmes meeting Nick and Nora Charles meeting Veronica Mars."

This crime noir is jam-packed with vivacious characters, intense plot twists, a kidnapped heroine, and a gambling gunslinger turned detective whose mentor's ghost haunts his every step. If you've read Book One and Two, you will be more than prepared for this fast-paced, adventure laden, super-sleuth compilation of historical facts and 3D characters.

The build-up and mystery surrounding his partner's death is only one part of this historical detective gambit. A dead body leads to even more clues about who killed Riot's partner, and Bel gets caught in the middle of a very sticky situation. It's almost two stories in one as the past and present reveal themselves, a new foe comes forward, and San Francisco shows us an accurate and well-researched background of the early 1900s.

Buckle up crime/mystery/noir fans and dive straight into this series with no regrets! :)

Interesting Plot

AJ or Riot (take your pick of the lead characters name) has been trying to unravel the missing pieces of a tragedy that happened to him 4 years earlier. Has blamed himself for the tragedy and the actions that resulted. But on his return to the Ravenwood Agency and San Fransisco and his job as the lead detective of Ravenwood Agency things are not always as perceived.

This book is a continuation of that base plot as well as the continuation of Ms Bell/Mr Morgan’s story. Isobel is a good addition to the Ravenwood agency even though she started out as a clients initial investigation in the first book of series.

I believe Sabrina Flynn has a very easy and inviting writing style the pulls the reader into the story and can see, feel and imagine the smells of characters experiences and adventures. I would recommend this book and the first two in the series to any mystery enthusiast

Not since the "Pink Carnation" books by Lauren Willig have I been obsessed with a series. A series that each book is fantastic and doesn't wane in quality as it continues.

I rarely tweet to authors, and I'm not ashamed to say I totally tweeted Sabrina Flynn begging that there be more of this world. Ha! (Good news, spoiler alert: we will see Riot and Co. again in a 4th one!)

Like the other books, it is told in chronological order so it's best to read from the first book. In "Record of Blood," it shares more about Ravenwood, Riot's history, and a softer side to Bel (aka making her more human and likeable). And always love when the boat cat Watson makes an appearance!

The next one can't come soon enough!

Another star turn

Flynn continues her well-written series with this twisting tale that takes us into the dark underworld of Chinatown and slavery. I fell more in love with her fascinating lead characters -- Riot and Bel. The cover on the first book didn't do the book justice. The second book's cover wasn't an improvement. This is the best one, so far. Just saw the cover of the next one and it's a step backward. If the covers reflected the superb quality of this series, the sales would improve. This is a wonderful mystery/romantic series!

Excellent!

Very involved, tense murder mystery! Lots of characters and many intertwined personal stories. Bel and Riot investigate and just become more confused and frustrated as more information is found. Ends with cliffhanger!

This part of the series has the blossoming romance heating up between our two detectives, but don't think this is just a run of the mill romance. There's so much going on, and the history that is in this volume is a part that nobody really wants to talk about. The enslavement of the Chinese, and really young person in San Francisco. There are characters in this book based on real heroes of that era that fought against this ugly business and risked their lives to free the young girls locked in cages. Our two detectives of the Ravenwood agency are part of this effort and there seems to be a lot more going on behind the scenes than just the Tongs. There are rich powerful men in respectable circles that are pulling the strings to keep the supply of enslaved young people going. The mysteries continue, there is more to come in this story in the next volume.

Another excellent entry in the Ravenwood Mystery series by the very talented Sabrina Flynn. Ms. Flynn amps up the action (and danger) for Atticus and Isobel in this third novel in the series, as the story intersperses flashbacks to unfold the heretofore untold story of the death of Zephaniah Ravenwood. Once again the story engages us with the compelling and authentic world of 1900 San Francisco and characters whom we have come to know and love. And as with any gripping series we are left wanting more! Well done, Sabrina!

This series has been a delightful surprise, and this book, which explores the streets of Chinatown and the lives of its inhabitants, was particularly good. Set in a city I'm very familiar with but during a time in its history I frankly knew almost nothing about, reading these well-researched and thoughtful books has been a fun and immersive peek into San Francisco's eclectic and often seedy past. But the setting is just one part of the fun. There are also the mysteries themselves, which are twisty and interesting, and the multifaceted main characters, Bel and A.J., who are gradually revealing the mysteries of their own past over the course of the series. With mystery, danger, a vibrant setting, a strong female co-lead, and a dash of romance, this is a truly enjoyable series.

Loved it! The story was dynamic, fast paced and the evolution of the characters had me gripped for the whole book.

I thoroughly enjoyed the historical research that went into the story, it gives a richness to the to characters and setting that leaves you with a greater understanding of San Francisco at the turn of the century, particularly the status and story of Chinese migrants. Equally, heartbreaking, informative and intriguing.

I was sucked in from beginning to end, can’t wait for book 4 to be released!

Great read!

This series just keep getting better & better. An "issue" is solved in each book but the underlying mystery expands & goes on. That's what keeps my interest! Love the characters. They are flawed but they draw you to them. One of a few series I will go back & read again!

I was pretty skeptical that further revelations about Ravenwood's murder could live up to the hype built up in the first two books. My hat is off to the the author because she really pulled it off with bit. I was also happy to see the mystery return to the seedier side of life in turn of the century San Francisco compared to the setting of the second book.

A fascinating and well-written mystery, with a wonderful cast of characters. I enjoyed getting to know more about the main characters' pasts, while at the same time attempting to solve the case they were on. The attention to historical detail was excellent too. The only thing I disliked about the book was the "to be continued" cliffhanger style ending... I always hate when authors do that.

PG-13
The talented author Sabrina Flynn continues to weave a spell binding mystery laced with history. This 1900 San Francisco mystery series reveals how difficult it was for early Chinese immigrants; Also the horror of young Chinese girls being kidnapped and sold into prostitution and the Chinese Tongs who own them.

The story of Atticus Riot’s lost memory is unraveled in this edition and it appears that it will lead Riot and Bel deeper into a secret crime organization which his former partner may have been secretly working on before he was so brutally murdered.

Bel continues with her many disguises and takes a hard beating while disguised as a man. A disguise that would land her in jail if discovered.
Her hatred of her husband, who believes her to be dead, and her love for Riot keep her going. She is fast becoming an excellent detective while disguised as a reporter.

The bantering and romance between Riot and Bel is steamy and deliciously well done.
The narrator, Sarah Molly-Christensen does a great job of unfolding this mystery and I have begun to listen to #4, Conspiracy of Silence.
There is also a fifth to be released April 26th. “The Devil’s Teeth”

I've really been loving period mysteries recently and came across this series while hunting for another period mystery. These books are expensive even for kindle editions but the series has been getting steadier stronger with each consecutive book. I love the characters and the slow, evolving pinch of romance (not too much as to go overboard and drown out the plot but enough to make me happy).

This has fast become a favourite series of mine, I just can't get enough of these books! After getting to know Bel in the second novel of the series, Riot's past is tantalisingly revealed to the reader, and the mystery surrounding the murder of Ravenwood only thickens. Once again brilliant characterisation of existing and new faces, wonderful depth to the twisting plot and detail to the setting. All round fabulous, can't rate it highly enough.

Excellent

The tension between Atticus and Isobel is finally released as they investigate the Chinese underworld and try to save chinese slave girls in San Francisco's China town. This book also flashes back to Zephaniah's murder 3 years earlier so it is like reading 2 stories all in one. If it hadn't been for work, I would have read this book nonstop to the end.

GREAT STORYTELLING!

I am so enjoying this series, I really don't want it to end. The characters are great, story ABSORBING and I think it's paced perfectly - I haven't skimmed any of the pages in the three I've read. Highly recommend.

Another well thought out installment. In this series, everyone and everything is important. This book is no exception. If you're introduced to someone once, odds are they are going to have some tangential connection to either the current mystery or the overall series arc. I love, love, love this growing partnership between Bel and Riot. They are both learning to trust and open up more to one another. I love that Tobias had his own starring role in this one (he's so funny anyway), not to mention Jin being a such great addition to the cast (Bel's mini me). This series definitely deserves more hype.

4.25/5⭐️

Third in the Ravenwood Mysteries series, there is A LOT going on here.

The dark underbelly of 1900 San Francisco’s Chinatown is explored as young women are kidnapped and sold or forced into slavery/prostitution.

This series is a bit dark as it points to lots of excellent research of time/place by the author. The characters are fully developed, the dialogue between the mains is dry and witty and the mysteries themselves are well thought out and engaging.

I’m happy to have discovered this series.
