Don’t miss the epic and heart-pounding conclusion to Ted Sanders’s Keepers series!

For centuries, the Keepers and the Wardens have been guarding the mysterious Mothergates, a source of incredible power. But now the Mothergates are dying, and Horace and his fellow Keepers know that the weakened gates may unleash a dangerous force that will consume the world—and destroy everyone in it.

While their enemies are willing to take this careless risk, Horace and his friends are prepared to sacrifice themselves for the preservation of the world. With their strongholds destroyed and many of their friends captured, the Keepers’ chance of succeeding hangs by a thread.

But all hope is not lost, as a mysterious talisman of power is discovered. It may hold the key to saving the universe . . . if they can unlock its secret in time.

This fourth and final book in Ted Sanders’s gripping Keepers series brings Horace and Chloe’s story to a heart-pounding conclusion, where friendships are tested, dangers are faced, and the ultimate sacrifice must be made.

i sincerely apologize to anyone who comes here looking for a real review. not sure why this is at the top. sorry!! i'm so normal about these books. goodreads is my sandbox and i use it to its full extent, unfortunately (this is not a review, it's a stream of consciousness ramble all the way through with spoilers galore)

--
11/25/23: If there's a review I'm going to run out of characters on, it's going to be this one. And that's funny, but also so right to me. Somehow, no other book deserves it, but also idk being 14 is really stupid lol 19 isn't much better.. five years down the line, and I'm back here again.

anyway, I'm going to cry!

do I have unanswerable questions? Yes, I always will have them. But somehow in TSL, I don't care quite as much. I think that the Wardens must remain mysterious til the end. (doesn't stop me from being all ???? about all of this - and especially the ending. i am still not really happy about the ending at all, and neptune. both of those things.)
I had forgotten, though, how somber and devastatingly .. pretty isn't the right word.. something this book is. The Altari, the Aerary, the Mothergates, the right and the wrong and the creation and the destruction and the everlasting story - the Uroboros and the Loom and the neverending cycle. have i ever mentioned that I'm insane about cycles?
it is of course not great that i really can't read these characters as 12, 13, whatever, but atp i don't care i just care that im fr going to cry reading this for apparently a 6th time lol? what. built worse. I'd completly forgotten that the multiverse is only introduced in this book because I take it for granted now knowing the mechanics of all these things but i was likle HOLYY HOLD UP when Falo started explaining that again. Me when I reread way too much
I don't have the words to explain what this story means to mean - wonderful english major I am - but something in the tangles of everything this is has caught me forever and refuses to let me go (or i refuse to let it go idk) where was that post about the unbreakable bond between a girl and the books she read when she was 13. because Yea.
consciousness, intention, history, the witnessed multiverse with a mirror held up to itself..
atp i don't care how weird and mystical this all reads because it's been grounded in science so much that it simply makes sense even though it sort of takes all that runs with it and adds a layer of bewildering creation (the multiverse) that almost seems to spoil it, but it doesn't for me at least lmaooo idk i could complain about the pacing of this whole series given horace literally learns the true story 2/3rds of the way through the LAST BOOK OF FOUR LIKE. WHAT? that's crazy to me but also that's when everything makes sense. I wonder how much Brian knew. the casual mention of everything unexplored kills me my word this world i just want to KNOW
asadsghfdjsgaaaaaaaaaaaaaa AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA i can't say much else because i am going insane and have to go back to school tomorrow ancd REALLY don't want to atp this story it breaks me the more i read it and understand all that i keep missing.

i'm just. Fading is so insane - the thought of simply walking away from something that is quite literally a part of you. Horace leaving the box, Chloe without the dragonfly - how? why? (chloe must've used the dragonfly to come home, but where'd it go? and why 20 years? why'd it take her so long, anyway?)
Everything is so insane. I will never get over this.
but oh man do I wish there was a semblance of closure for the other characters. I love Horace, I love Chloe, but - there are so many more characters, shunted. sigh

6.30.23 - DONT appreciate the fact that it's july 2023 in half an hour. every so often, at the most inconvenient times, i violently remember this book and the fact that chloe was T W E L V E ?? ????? ??????? do you know how insane this book is to me. ido not UNDERSTAND. i should reread it but i am not home sigh
11.19.22 - i got out of bed at 11:53pm because i feel the need to note that it has been apparently four years since i first read this. cool. brilliant. this is certainly a book. im going back to bed.
6.27.22: i am back again because i think it is objectively hilarious that the back cover just says THE END IS HERE. also i just noticed the glossary of my copy is printed impressively weirdly there's just random È's in the place of il's and Í's in the place of iu's. Awesome!
that is all i will now leave again for an indeterminate amount of time before i, once again, remember this series exists. yes i do use book 'reviews' as journals sometimes

10.15.21 - i keep coming back to this for the sole reason of being confused, actually
because i was lying in bed at like 1:30 last night just going "huh" at random things i remembered
me and my 13-14 year old self who was OBSESSED with the multiverse! 3
list of random things i thought about that i wish i actually understood:

anyway I'm far too sentimental to touch the rating of this book so. five stars it is.
NOW i am remembering the time my friend and i did a keepers rpg before this book came out. deceased. had some cool tan'ji concepts though actually in retrospect

i have like three essays due tomorrow but nooo my monki brain was like "AH YES, GO REREAD A BOOK YOU'VE READ LIKE FIVE TIMES ALREADY" this is FINE i am VIBING
for some reason i associate this book w this song even though it doesn't make much sense together

"You were never lost with me. Promise me you'll come back."

I think I've sufficiently recovered to finally write this review. But where do I even start?

So much happened this book, in relatively few pages. There are 4 really incredible battle/confrontation scenes, on par with the best of the previous books.
1) We learn just how much Chloe can do with her instrument while seeing her be a badass (once again)
2) How dedicated are Chloe and Horace to each other? Again, let's find out in one of the most dramatic ways possible
3) Oh, you thought Horace was always the planning guy? Think again. There's some incredible teamwork here. Also Joshua redemption arc finally. Also also, I SEE Y'ALL WITH THOSE MOMENTS 👀
4) DRAMA

In between, there are some more crazy reveals that this series loves so much as well as a few surprisingly emotional moments. (The thing with Neptune is so sad but I can't really even explain why.)

Did someone say character development? Because I sure did.
Horace having the idea that saved everyone, being powerful in ways other than combat, and becoming more confident in his own skills. Chloe mastering her (understandable) anger, saying what needed to be said to Isabel, saving Joshua in Big Sister Protective Mode ("you just tell them you're with me"), and, of course, realizing what it meant to be the Keeper of her instrument. And together, how much they grew since book 1 and how much they trusted each other 🥺
We really got so much content for these two this book and since we started the series off with them it's fitting that we end with them too.

But really, it's the ending that gets me. I don't want to spoil too much but let's just say I was in tears. It's no Amber Spyglass ending, thankfully, but it's not the perfect happy ending that Chloe deserved. (seriously, she wins the Most Trauma Survived award in this series. give the poor girl a BREAK.) I still had a lot of questions about the ending but as April said, there are always going to be more questions than answers and she was right :,) There were some deaths that I was not prepared to process 😭 Nobody too major but still.
Listen, I KNEW this was coming. From the beginning of the book I was ready for the worst-case scenario. But at some point I got my hopes up and then didn't get them back down quickly enough when the ending came.

I have so, so, so much more that I could say about this book that I'd probably somehow fill up the character limit. There were so many parts, even small ones, that had a profound impact on me. But I want to end with how the book overall made me feel. It's a beautiful piece on the cycle of life and death. But it's also about the different kinds of bonds we have with other people. We spent 4 books learning about how powerful the bond between a person and their instrument is, but I loved how at the end of it all, the bond between people who care about each other is the one that lasts longer.

Definitely such a good series. Highly recommended :)

I’ve never cried as much because of words on paper as I did with the epilogue of this book. What a way to end one of my all-time favourite series.

I love Horace and Chloe and all the wardens and I'm so sad it's all ended! Everything became very apocalyptic and metaphysical, sprinkled with long speculations about the consciousness of the universe.

Well, that was an adventure.

As with the previous three books, the characters made this last installment shine. I LOVED Horace and Chloe all the way through. I loved their friendship and how it began and endured and grew solid and dependable over the course of the series, and .

I really liked the pacing too; Sanders seemed to spend just the right amount of time on everything.

The first in the series had the same flavor as A Wrinkle In Time or the Chronicles of Narnia- that sense of getting wrapped up in something more. And the whole Keeper ride was really exciting (though like I said, my favorite aspect was Horace and Chloe). But somehow I didn't find the Mothergates and their fate to be a super satisfying source of that more. I couldn't help feel sorry for our characters who have to live in a multiverse that is simply a reflection of their own actions.

If it's all just a reflection of us, it all seems pretty pointless, to my mind. Or at least that's how I've long felt, coming from the viewpoint that our universe (or multiverse maybe? What a fun thought!) was created by a brilliant, creative and caring God. (Though I suppose in a sense the universe does reflect us humans in that He gave us the reigns and we have certainly messed things up, just like Horace and Chloe's multiverse... )

Sorry to digress. Regarding the ending:

To summarize, the series was both fun and thought-provoking. I definitely recommend it!

This series deserves to be in your collection. Smart writing, believable and memorable characters and quite a unique storyline as well. The ending for this last book feels a bit rushed but as a series as a whole I give this 5 stars and is my favorite book; middle grade fantasy. The only one that is of the same caliber is a series called Oracles of Delphi but unfortunately, that series will probably never be completed. The original Percy Jackson 10 books (2 arcs, 5 books each) also comes to mind. I really hope this becomes more popular. I feel sad it wasn't even a nominee in the goodreads book awards.

Umm.... I’m not okay. This book was absolutely incredible! All the theories about the multi universes was so interesting. The ending really got me, like when Chloe has to leave FOR 20 YEARS WTF!!! I am actually heartbroken, I don’t see why Horace couldn’t go with her. I would have still been really sad but at least Chloe wouldn’t have been alone all those years. And the fact that when Horace steps out he finds out that Mrs. Hapstead is dead and so is Dailen like what! And the epilogue didn’t say anything about what happened to the other characters or how Chloe even got back and what she and Horace and the others had been doing the past 20 years. I know I probably sound like I hated the ending which to clear things up, I didn’t. It’s just really sad that they (Horace & Chloe) were apart so many years and now they’re just on a train, so I’m just feeling pretty lost. Also another thing why did it take her 20 years to get back?!? The ending just made me so sad, I think them being apart hurt the most. So now I’m just going to try to pretend that they weren’t apart and that everything’s fine. Okay... I’m done.

Oh... lol, by the way I did love this series and the characters. I don’t think I will reread the series, at least not for a long time just because the last book is very sad for me. But I would definitely recommend the series. Alrighty now I’m done😗✌️

This was a mediocre finale to a series that kind of lost my interest halfway through. I found myself really bothered by the relationships between youth and adults in these books, and I just didn't feel like the portrayal of the kids was authentic. It felt like they were ageless, like they were vaguely "tween-ish" rather than being a particular age and having the struggles, traits and skills that come with being that age. I kept thinking back to how we watched HP grow up through the series, and I felt like I didn't really know how these kids were developing at all, just how their confidence and life perspective changed. I liked that I was able to get back into the complex world (with all of its jargon), especially after being pretty confused and worried after the first chapter that it had been too long since reading the last installment. Overall, it just kind of let me down, especially after talking up the unique plot when the series first began.

Much like Horace, Sanders is very meticulous, with a penchant for abstract, mind-boggling space-time conundrums. Thankfully, he is kind enough to explain things for all the Chloes of the world and...even if we still don't get it, the story still works (probably, lol).

My only complaint about this book is that it felt like it spent a little too much time on the abstract and not on the characters. People would disappear for entire chapters and - ah! - poor Beck was nowhere to be found!!!

Nevertheless, I absolutely loved the ending, not least because

There are so many things I could talk about this book and so many questions I still have. However, in the end, what remained impressed upon me the most was Chloe and Horace's friendship. Here I am rereading these series after 5+ years since I last read it and my gosh am I picking up more of these tiny moments between them than I did before.

But also the ENDING!!! I think it's safe to say we all broke down when we realized with Horace what Chloe had to do, and the dialogue between them absolutely broke me. "You were never lost with me" 😭😭😭😭😭😭. It's incredible to think how strong their friendship is considering that in the books, it's only been about 2-3 months since they first met!! (In the third book, Horace says it's been two months since he found the Fel'Daera, which is what I'm going off here). Yet somehow, Chloe trusts him with her lie, trusts him more than she trusts anyone else in the Wardens. And Horace too, comes to appreciate and admire her so much more. They're literally complete opposites, yet somehow compliment each other in just the right way. They have their footsies thing, and they worry about the other so much. Though Chloe would deny that if you asked her.

Somehow Chloe came back, and somehow, Horace knew to be their waiting for her. They had a short friendship of roughly 2-3 months, yet it was so deep and so beautiful that it led us all on this journey of 4 books and an epilogue. An epilogue with questions, but also a strange completeness. Either way, they were able to reunite and we come to what Horace would call the "story's end". It ended exactly how he said it would. And I couldn't have enjoyed it more.

😤<-- not anger face but calming down face.

I just finished reading the book and let me just say that...wow thx for the great ending.
From the second last chapter, since the incident in the mothergate my eyes started welling up whenever they mentioned Chloe's name.
I feel so so so so bad for Horace and more for Chloe, bcus...........you'll see why if you've read the book.
They were such SUCH great friends and seeing -more like reading them- seperate was heartbreaking.

One of the main reasons I like the series is the friendship between Horace & Chloe. The never breaking bond between them...even in the Mothergate she said "'You can't. I wish you could. I would take you with me everywhere' She was crying." that sentence made me realize more how much they liked & trusted each other. I cried too, man.
Do you remember the chapter where Horace & Chloe (holding hands) walked through the Mothergate in Ka'hoka and out the Mothergate in Australia?

There Horace went in the Mothergate (alone) to uncouple the Astrolabe and came out 5 secs later so completely frightened, frightened for Chloe more than himself because SPOILER ALERT- it felt like 6 days for Horace inside.
He hugged her then, Again emphasizing how much they (he) trusted each other.
I actually bookmarked that page so I can find it easily.

Questions:
1. Why did they leave for St.Louis?
2. Horace left the box behind because the medium did not flow any more, right?
3. Why did Chloe not have the Dragonfly?

Someone pls answer them and if someone is looking forward to reading the series...DO IT, JUST DO
IT!
I only talked 'bout Horace and Chloe but the rest of the book is still really amazing.
OverAll great book and Fantastic series.

This was, in my opinion, the least exciting or interesting book out of the four. It was also the shortest, so this makes sense. The ending was very bittersweet, and nothing that I expected. There are a few issues I had with the ending, such as it doesn't explain what happened to Neptune, Joshua, April, Baron, Brian, and Gabriel (and probably some others I can't remember right this moment.) Also, after Neptune faded, she was hardly seen or mentioned again, which really bothered me, because I was hoping that as the last book in the series, the other characters who didn't have perspectives yet would have their perspectives for at least a chapter in this book, and also because I wanted to learn more about Neptune.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS BOOK. I loved the whole plot, I absolutely am in love with the ending and all of the answers to every question the books raised in the series. It was beautifully wrapped up in a nice little bow. The writing was AMAZING and I just am so in love with this series it was so good I was nursing this book because I didn't want it to end but then it got so good I couldn't put it down again and I just am taken back by how good this series was and this book. The story was so GOOD. I am also shattered and in love with the last chapter and how it ended it was amazing and lovely and just YES. 10/10 recommend this book and this series omg.

Only four stars for this last book in the series. There are some great points in it, and it carries on the well crafted world of the other books. And the ending wasn't the problem, per se; I'm fine with having some unanswered questions about the characters, and the conversations in the book about the nature of that universe do a fine job of setting up what is to come. The last few chapters felt a bit rushed, though, almost like Sanders thought he might run out of pages. Still highly recommend this series, though.

Rarely I ever bother to write a review, but considering this is my fourth or fifth time rereading this series, this can finally serve as a send-off for me.
Even with its faults, it’s a series that I love: its worldbuilding, the intricacies of the plot, and ultimately the bittersweet ending. It’s an ending that I’ve cried each time over, even though I know how it ends.
Objectively, it is in no way a perfect series, and definitely not my ideal one. As detailed as the plot is, that means that it’s prone to holes and inconsistencies and things that don’t feel right.
But even then, I feel several of the major characters reach good points in their character arcs. They attain wisdom, strength, confidence, empathy. It’s a beautiful journey to see them go on.
The first two I think are the series’s strongest. The third one was slightly jarring, and really beefy for the few events that actually happen (literally 1/3 of it is dedicated to a single fight scene). The fourth one maintains the same feel, but its tone manages to make it more of its own send-off.
Books bring wonder, seemingly magic, into the world, in the short time we’re with them. As painful as it can be, those doorways must close and move onto other places.
I think that’s a lesson I should learn.

this is just a phenomenal ending to this series. sad and poignant but full of drama and action and the characters all have grown and learned along the way. once again Ted Sanders makes us question what is the right thing to do - who are the good guys and who are the bad guys? who do we WANT to win this confrontation? As a mom my heart was torn to shreds as well, more so because we have two mom characters who tell us how they feel. I love all of these characters and I want more but I know it's time to let them go.

update - I reread the series recently and even though I knew what was coming and kept telling myself I was going to stop and not read this last book again because it was so sad, I couldn't stop myself. I had to read it again anyway. I've added this to my list of books to read when I need a good cry.

This final book in the Keepers series did what all finales aim to do - it left the reader feeling marvelous, tragically complete. The Starlit Loom continues the world-building outlined throughout the series, incorporating science and even philosophy elegantly, in a way that might take further reads to fully get a grasp on. The characters are explored in full, with Horace and Chloe's stories ending in a true and engaging story arc. There is so much to notice and take in that the story grows richer with every read and re-read. For those that have made it this far, I encourage you to continue following the Keepers' path. I imagine that you will not be disappointed.
