Runebound #2

Rune Destiny

Rate this book
The Alkomian Empire lies in ruin. An army of traitors marches on the capital, forcing the emperor from his throne. In his absence, chaos reigns. Villages burn as the blood of innocents runs in the streets. Entire provinces are reduced to rubble, demolished by terrible rune-power. Darkness and despair covers the land as hope for deliverance is consumed in the flames of destruction.

On the border of the empire, two young heroes stand bloodied but unbroken.

Aventine is cut off from the rest of the Rune Guard. Trapped in the Brokenspire Mountains, she fights to protect a small band of imperial loyalists from the corrupt soldiers of the First Legion.

Remus, shackles traded for an axe, leads his men against the runebound horde as it creeps across the Wilds. He is the last line of defense standing between the empire and this implacable foe.

As the empire crumbles, the architect of its doom rises in the east. Savaroth the Immortal walks the earth, and his coming heralds the end of the age of man.

Rune Destiny is a great follow up to Rune Empire!

Remus and Aventine are back in action in this story. It starts off about a month after the first book and we get a glimpse of what has happened in that time. Their stories both take very interesting twists and turns throughout this book. It's packed with action, making it a fast read and hard to put down. You get more back story and development of the main characters as well as the side characters. The rune system of magic gets more complex and intricate, filling in where runes came from and more nuances to their uses. In addition to Aventine and Remus dealing with a crumbling empire and runebound enemies, we also learn more about Savaroth, who is behind all the chaos in both story lines. I liked the additional characters we get to know in this second book as well. The author continues the story going back and forth between the two POVs so you get the enjoyment of two books in one and he keeps his clean, tight writing style. Overall a fun, wild and interesting read. Looking forward to the next book already!

Pretty good so far

Second book in the series, two main characters or storylines going, both are good. Basically an evil overlord is trying to take over the world, the established empire is mired in chaos and eventually civil war while the world is crumbling around them, the two main characters are young, inexperienced, and trying to do their part to stem the tide. Good story telling, well written, not much to complain about, will read the next one, maybe not the best of the genre but certainly not bad.

Good read.

Good read, lots of action, really sinister bad guys and flawed callable heroes. A good sophomoric effort to a well written first story. I will probably read a few other things before revisiting this series. Things are getting very complicated for a story that just reached a supposed climax.

A mess

I enjoyed the first book of this series but this was poor. The characters lack any believability and warmth leading me to stop caring for them. It felt convoluted and irrelevant towards the end. I like to support emerging writers but I won't be reading anymore of this series.

Wrath and Ruin

Avantine and her friends are trying to get back to the emperor while those who have escaped the wilds are searching for help from the empire. What they find is not what they expect.
