The Best Friend
What she saw was enough to make her a liability.
Aubry Clark was thrilled with the direction her life was headed. AC Interiors, her design business, was taking off thanks to high profile clients like Liam Lockwood and Mike Chesterfield, giving her a chance. She could practically taste the success she was about to come into and the steamy cat and mouse games between her and perpetual bachelor, Mike, didn't hurt either.

So this book was OK. I much preferred the previous two connected books. This one just didn't have the same "intrigue" as the previous ones for me. There were small little things that were glossed over, and that bothered me. I couldn't stand Mike AT ALL. This guy was a completely self-centered jerk, and I never once felt he cared for anyone (especially Aubry) but himself. So yea, a bit of a miss for me. That said, I still love this author and will be keeping my eyes peeled to see what she has in store for us next.

THE BEST FRIEND: Is a full length dark/suspense novel by K. Larsen. Spoken in ‘Dual Perspectives’ This is Mike and Aubry’s story.
You're like a fever, Aubry. And this fever, it burns me. It consumes me. I'm a man waiting for a stubborn woman. One who I worship. One I love as she is. Oe I accept without the promise of change. I choose that. I want that.
Twenty-four year old Aubry Clark is thrilled with the direction her life is taking her, her design business AC interiors was becoming a reality.
Just before the sunset goes down Aubry makes her way down to the docks to capture a photo for her site, while she was shooting pictures she’d heard a muffled scream in the background which caught her attention, turning around she saw some rough burly guys dragging a barely clad female into a shipping container, her survival instincts kicked in and she took off on a run, too late she was tackled from behind and that’s all she recalls. Until she wakes up.
Held captive. Screams from other captives keep her company, fed, sedated, chained
Mike is a pilot, an independent contractor, a smuggler whose in high demand. He’ll fly any cargo that’s required, no questions asked. He does it for the thrill, On one such run, things don’t really go to plan. Something compelled him to look in the crate, what he saw astounded him.
A rescue mission
Now they are both in hot water, he can't take her back incase whoever took her takes her again, the only thing he can do is touch down in the jungle and hide her until things settle down.
She knows nothing about his activities, will she still love him when she finds out?
I am so glad I took that plunge and one clicked this, straight away your dragged into a gritty situation which sets up the perfect pace for this story, I wish it had've stayed in that moment a wee bit longer, but then as soon as they were in the forest that's another moment I was really starting to but yet again like the pervious passage in the book, that scene was over too quickly also.

Aubry Clark is an interior designer who has learned to appreciate all that life has to offer. While on location for a photography shoot, Aubry is in the right place at the wrong time. Upon realizing how precarious her situation has become, it’s too late to reverse what she has witnessed. Causing Aubry to transition to survival mode, she no longer has the choice of freedom.
“Most days of life are unremarkable. They start and end with no true memory made.”
Mike Chesterfield lives on his trust fund and enjoys flying his plane as often as possible. Known as a playboy, Mike has always felt a connection to Aubry yet he’s been hesitant to act on the attraction. However, he does not foresee how his thrill-seeking activities will affect him and Aubry. Acting to protect what he knows, complications arise.
“Mike sighs and draws slow small circles on my skin. “There are two side to every story, Aub.”
What occurs between Mike and Aubry is intense as each try to make the most of their limited time together. Mike knows the danger of their situation but by trying to shield Aubry, he must hurt her and lie to the one person he cares about the most. To Aubry, Mike’s actions are contradictory and don’t add up. Though she knows the truth, others begin to question the facts causing extra tension.
“The brain is powerful. It can make us believe lies. It can sway us to remember or block out truths or fallacies. It’s a skilled illusionist.”
Told in dual POV, Aubry’s experience is vividly felt as she tries to maintain a grasp on her reality. Once she discovers Mike’s role in her situation, she can’t separate her mind and heart. As she processes the truth, Aubry isn’t willing to let it all go without a fight. For Mike, life has always been convenient for him; however, once he realizes and values what is important, his actions show his true nature.
Going into this book, I was expecting a twisty romance suspense and I enjoyed the elements of what occurred between Mike and Aubry in the first half of the story. After it all started to settle, I did feel some character disconnect since it seems storylines from previous books better enrich the total character experience. Aubry is a strong character and I like how she accepted challenges no matter how grim or difficult. Though he is quite sexy, I wanted to know more about what makes Mike tick.
The Best Friend is a story about trusting your gut instinct when it comes to love and life. This book would appeal to those looking for a romantic suspense with darkish elements.
Note: while this book is not part of a series, I recommend reading in order for the most fulfilling experience.

Katie stunned us with Jezebel and I became her ardent fan. She has it in her to weave unexpected stories with unbelievable twists that touch our hearts at the same time. Tutor was such a book. Nora was broken and returned to civilisation and now it's her bestie Aubrey's turn. A successful career, a promising future and a girl on the go is tackled to the ground and thrown in darkness. The hard concrete floor shatters her life and the coldness of the room decimates her career.
She's been kidnapped !
I'm dreaming. or dying. I can result in which. I'd like to think it's dreaming. I'd like to hope that dying feels more peaceful than this does. my heart beats like a steady drum of windshield wipers in rain storm
I won't give away an ounce of the story because it goes at a very fast pace, zipping through curves and so much happens that keeps you involved.
There's Mike, Aubrey's " boyfriend" the one she dreams about.

There's Salve who helps
There Yuri & Gregory and the small Russian who take
Lots of covert action in a dark club - THE BLACK . It's symbolic of the men found within
I had trouble with the events jumping from past to present to past and you had to stop to figure it out. There was time leap from jungle to hospital, from box to mike which dammed the flow of the story. The drug haze and her acute senses were contradictory.
But please go and read this twisted read full of dark corners and enjoy

The best and most wonderful thing about reading a K. Larsen book is that you never know where she is going to take you. And even after reading several chapters and getting a feel for the plot, she always throws in her special brand of "Don't get to comfortable" twists, sending the reader into tailspin of emotion. Her writing style always keeps me on the edge and The Best Friend did exactly that.
Mike and Aubrey's story is not an easy one and one where I wasn't always rooting for them to work it out. In fact, on more than one occasion I was calling for Mike's balls to be served up on a platter. He's a self centered, rich boy, who, up until now, has only had one priority, himself! Aubrey had already lived through one hell with her best friend and was now sent to another all her own with Mike becoming her an unlikely and reluctant rescuer....of sorts. It wasn't always clear what Mikes objective was or where his loyalties lay but it was clear that his feelings for Aubrey were real. While I never quite became #TeamMike, I did see that in all their imperfections, Aubrey and Mike were perfect for each other. "Nothing is unforgivable. Forgiveness is a gift anyone can choose." Aubrey is a strong woman. One who is far stronger than me.
I love K. Larsen's writing. I love all the places her words take me, even if those places aren't comfortable or agreeable. Her books never fail to challenge my mind and change how I see the world. You can't ask for better than that.

This is the story of strength - physical, mental and emotional strength - against the odds. It's about the strength of one woman as she endures repeated trauma and must fight for her survival.
As you can tell from the synopsis, Aubry Clark follows a similarly unlucky fate as her friend, Nora, who's traumatic tale was told in The Tutor. And that common history is crucial down the road.
"Welcome to my iniquity. I'm so sorry, Aub. I wish darkness never touched your vibrancy."
But before I get a hold of myself, let me backtrack to the incident where is all went wrong for Aubry.
This story kicks off into high gear with Aubry's kidnapping, and told thru her POV, and Mike's, her potential love interest, we learn of the hardships she faced, and how Mike struggled to handle her disappearance, both going thru a series of "what ifs" about their relationship. (Mini spoiler warning) Where this story gets strange is when they reunite. Rather than ruin everything for other readers, I'll just give you my thoughts on how these two main characters handled things.
As I lead off this review, Aubry, who had a great fighting spirit. Despite trauma after trauma, she doesn't give up. I personally thought she was too forgiving at times, but I think given the ordeal she's been through, just wanted to seek the comfort of another. A man she thought she could trust.
As for Mike, I'll be honest, he's the reason for my lower rating. For most of the book, I thought he was incredibly selfish. I get he was looking at a bigger picture, but things could have become so much worse for Aubry being alone, and that would have been 100% his fault. And as you might expect, he never had everything figured out, and he nearly paid for it. So, while Aubry may have been forgiving, I wasn't.
Overall, this was an entertaining read for those that like of mix of suspense and dark elements. While I didn't always care for the actions of the main characters, it was a unique take on the kidnapping theme.

WOW. This was a fantastic book I was hooked from the start. If you've read The Tutor you'll recognise Aubrey as Nora's best friend who we see pop up sporadically throughout the story.
From the beginning the author keeps the reader guessing about the predicament she finds herself in. Aubrey is in the wrong place and sees something no-one was meant to and now she's been taken. Now normally like me you'll think you know the route the story will take but I was so wrong but I'm not going to tell you what happens. Where's the fun in that?
I loved the journey the author takes us on, the story is a suspenseful mystery where I questioned everything that I was reading. Very well written with intriquing characters that I wanted to know more about.

The Best Friend, this book was so good. I am not going to give anything away but if you have read The Tutor, you will love this one. This book can be read as a standalone, you really should read The Tutor as well as it is a great dark read.
This book is Aubry Clark she is the best friend of Nora’s she is from The Tutor Aubry is in the wrong place at the wrong time and heard a scream and turns around that was her first mistake. The storyline/plot was so good it kept me on the edge of my seat to see what was going to happen. This is a must-read for fans of dark romance/suspense.
From start to finish I could not put it down I read in one sitting. It is dark and twisted it is told from a few different POV’S I stayed up late reading I just could not put it down. It is fast-paced. It had me questioning myself about what was real and what wasn’t, did that happen did it not, I loved it how it messed with my head. This book was written so well.

I was thrilled to see that Aubry was getting her own book. We met her in The Tutor briefly and in The Brother. I loved her character, so I was really looking forward to reading her story.
I don't know what I was expecting to get in this book. I knew it was going to be darker and gritty. Aside from that, I had no clue.
I had some difficulty with this story. It was rushed in some areas and slow in others. It felt like there were many pieces of the story missing. It didn't flow well for me. It felt choppy.
The character development wasn't as spot on as it has in other books I have read of Larsen's. I felt very disconnected from them.
Overall, the story isn't bad. It's just not my favorite from Larsen to date. I needed a little more from her in this book for me to really love it.

Man, The Best Friend by K. Larsen had me saying..."What the Hell is going on???" lol
Talk about a very twisty turn kind of a read!! But boy did it keep me flipping those pages to find out that the Hell was really going on!!!
Yesss my dark loven book readers..This is a book for you.

I gave The Best Friend 4 iScream "OMG-no way" Cones!!! This is my 3rd book I have read by K. Larsen and she sure does know how to suck you in with her words!!! Just love her writing style!!

I really thought this book had everything I love about dark reads. A captive heroine. Really sadistic bad guys. A hero that is going to save her. And that’s where this kind of sat outside my comfort zone. Overall, the story was ok but I had issues with both Aubry and Mike. Aubry never seemed to behave in an intelligent way. She knows her life is in danger yet she questions constantly why she can’t just go back to life as normal. And she realizes that Mike is sketchy YET she continues to lust after him. Meanwhile, Mike is selfish and doesn’t really put Aubry’s safety and well-being above his own questionable deeds coming to light. I just had a hard time really rooting for either one of these characters. I loved the concept of the story. I just didn’t love the flawed characters. I wanted them to both be more redeemable.

This story had me freaking out!! I yelled and swore! Ugh, I was so mad at Mike . Aubry was such a strong woman. Without her strength she would not be where she was today. They both had great friends and love on their side. It took so much to get there. This authors writing always blows me away. And I can't wait to see what she has in store for us next!

If you only take one thing from this review, let it be that K. Larsen is never going to give you predictable.
The Best Friend follows a character that you know and love if you've read The Tutor or The Brother. As the best friend, she was a support character in those books but she takes the spot light in this one. Aubry thought she had it all until it gets taken away.
Somehow, K. Larsen manages to create a new unique topsy turvy, mind bendingly complicated situation that feels just as hopeless, lost, and chaotic as her previous novels. There's no love loss for crazy in these pages. If you yourself don't wonder about your own mental capacity, you aren't reading it right!
And can I say that the teaser for her next novel had me shuddering with chills and needy all at the same time! I can't wait!

Can't get enough of this series
The Tutor, The Brother and now the Best Friend. This series has gripped my attention and is hanging on tight! And K. Larsen is giving us the full effect with every last character! I love that these books can be read as standalone, BUT to get the "full" effect I highly reccomend reading them in order. This world is full of life, love, friendship, heart break. You name it it's here. In both Aubry and Mike's cases, they are both the best friend to a main character. Aubry is the take care of everyone and loves with her whole heart. Mike is the do what I want, when i want, despite the consequences. And the two of them together.... make sense. Opposites do attract and this story kinda proves that. And I love the fact that even tho Aubry and Mike were just side characters in previous storylines, the author felt the need to let their story be told. It shows, to me, that she loves all these characters the way we all do! Can't wait to see what happens next!!

If you haven’t read The Tutor and The Brother go read these books now. They are so amazingly good. I have been so excited for this book. My expectations were high. The author blew my expectations away as this was another awesome read.

This is a superb read. I cannot praise this author highly enough. I’m so looking to reading more from this author especially if it includes these characters.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
Aubry Clark was thrilled with the direction her life was headed. AC Interiors, her design business, was taking off thanks to high profile clients like Liam Lockwood and Mike Chesterfield, giving her a chance. She could practically taste the success s he was about to come into and the steamy cat and mouse games between her and perpetual bachelor, Mike, didn't hurt either. Until one day, just before sunrise, she went down to the docks to set up a photo shoot she'd dreamed up. She wanted to capture a colorful graffiti wall to use against the minimalist decor she had in mind for an upcoming project. But what she accidentally captured instead, was about to change her life forever. The click of her camera shutter was the last untroubled sound she heard. When a muffled scream ripped through the air, Aubry turned around. That was her first mistake. When men dressed in black, forcefully shoved a scantily-clad girl in a shipping container and set their sights one her, Aubry ran. Little did Aubry know, her luck was about to run out.
If you have the The Tutor or The Brother then you have seen Aubry in those books. If you haven't read those book you may want to go back and do that for you will have spoilers in this book I think. Aubry though is Nora's best friend and has been for forever. She knows exactly what Nora went through when she was found and how hard it was for her to find a normal life for herself. But Nora stuck by her for every second of it and will always be Nora's number one friend. Now she herself is about to find out what it is like to be taken from everyone and everything you love. But the one thing she did learn is that she should have really told Mike how she felt about him and he too will end up wishing they hadn't played such a silly game of cat and mouse. This is the story of Aubry's kidnapping. She is one tough cookie, but she also is thinking she is losing her mind at times thanks to some things that Mike is doing. I can't go into details of this book or I will ruin something for someone. I enjoyed this book but must admit that I was so confused at times. Like I literally thought I was losing it at times just like Aubry. If you like a book that will keep you guessing and on your toes then you will enjoy The Best Friend. The Tutor and The Brother are my favorites in this series. And while I enjoyed The Best Friend something just felt like it was missing. I think it was Mike's actions and how he was coming off. I almost at times didn't like him for what he was doing. Don't get me wrong this book is worth reading but I did find at times that I was just super confused.

So this is my first K. Larsen book and I wanted to read it due to the uniqueness of the blurb. I mean who wouldn't want to. And it really is a different type of book. It is told in dual points of view, Aubrey and Mike.
These two are best friends and have apparently been for a while now. Mike is a rich man but takes risks with his life by being a pilot that smuggles things in and out of countries for the Russians. Of course, nobody knows this especially not Aubrey. But when Aubrey goes missing after doing a photo shoot he is called in for questioning.
We find Aubrey in a locked container being transported to who knows were. She is freaked and is hoping Mike is out there trying to find her. When she is cleaned up and put into a box to be brought to someone that bought her, needless to say when Mike opens her container she is in for quite a surprise.
Okay, so I didn't know there were other books that went with this book. Saying that I don't feel like I was missing anything on that part. But when it came to this book I will say I felt like even though these two said they had a deep friendship I didn't feel it. I felt Aubrey's fear and everything she was going through at first. But when Mike is told she is missing, he doesn't seem to really care? It is like a problem for him to have to get questioned. And then when he finds her, he is more worried about his life than both of them. At that point, I was rolling my eyes. Maybe it was just me, and maybe the other books could explain why Mike and Aubrey were like that I don't know. But I didn't like the way he treated her. So I kind of just gave up on the emotional part for a while.
I will give you no more on the story. But I will say I am probably not going to read the other books that went with this series. But I might read her future books. We will see.

Once again, K Larsen delivers something unique and intriguing. Each book in this series is completely different from the one before it, creating such an interesting and diverse world for us. While we get to be with the characters we love and experience an intense story, we get to do so in a new way each time.
Larsen definitely had me experiencing a full range of emotions. I was so mad at Mike for the majority of the story it was hard for me to see any way that he could be redeemed. I yelled at the book several times, threatening his manhood and cursing out characters feelings and actions. The suspense and danger had my heart pounding and made me so nervous. The situation with Mike had me wary, angry, frustrated, and at times excited. There were also many moments I felt sad, relieved, hopeful, all of it. I love when a book creates such a strong response from me.
We are left with a little taste of what’s to come and I am hooked already! I can’t wait to see what Larsen is going to bring us next.

I struggled with this book. It was not only unbelievable at times, but it was also boring.
The leading lady is terrible. It’s hard to feel any kind of sympathy towards Aubry when she was such a brat and took her attitude out on everyone. I get her being angry with Mike, but if she took the time to look at the details of the situation, it would have made complete sense that what he did was for her safety. Mike did save her. Yes, part of what he did was selfish, however it was the only play to make in order to keep them both safe. I just didn’t understand why Mike couldn’t explain it to her, because obviously she was too stupid to realize it by herself.
I liked Mike better than Aubry, but not much. It was hard to not eye roll at the job he was doing. How he was conveniently the pilot, alone, and chose that specific time to check the cargo when he supposedly never did in the past. He actually lands his plane on his way to the drop off to use the bathroom in the middle of a river. Yeah, not believable at all.

This was a quick romantic suspense that gave me chills. I thought I knew how this story would play itself out at first. Then I was blindsided with confusion. I wasn’t sure what was real and what was not. It was enticing and suspenseful.
I liked the storyline that was well thought out. There are a couple times I had to reread some parts because the chapters started with a forwarded scene. The explanation would come later in the chapter. This is my first book by this author and unaware of the writing style.
The characters had chemistry. They were well created. Once I started I had to finish it.
Standalone told in a dual POV with an HEA. I recommend this story.

I came into this book fairly blind. Obviously i had read the blurb but other than that i was oblivious.
I dont know if this book really works as a standalone and i wish i had done a bit more research before reading it. Right from the get go I felt as though i was missing something. There are a lot of references to Nora's story that left me confused, or took me away from Aubrey's story.
I found the first part of the story quite weak to be honest, a bit wishy washy. I didn't really get the motivation behind the initial kidnapping and then Mike's selfish behaviour, one more than one occasion, just turned me into a frowning, tutting mess.
I can understand why its got some fantastic reviews. The idea behind the story is strong and if he had been written better, then Mike's motives are, i guess quite swoonworthy.
Unfortunately for me it is just too untidy and didnt grip my attention enough to warrant a glowing review.

This is my first book by K. Larsen and she didn't disappoint! Her writing is captivating and full of emotion. This story was told in a beautiful way.
Aubrey has been through so much in her past, but her present doesn't seem to make it any better. She finds herself in a terrifying situation but her resilience and strength brings her through. The one thing that can make her falter is Mike. The one who she has feelings for but never seems to have the courage to tell him.
This is a story of strength, love, survival and forgiveness. Of learning to trust when your heart tells you not to. Being able to let go of everything in the past, laying yourself bare and vulnerable for the one you love, with no guarantee that it will be reciprocated.

Ugh.... I’m not sure exactly what to say about this book. I struggled while reading it. I loved the first two books with Nora and was really excited Aubrey was getting her own book but it fell a little flat for me. The suspense of everything really took me out of what was going on with Aubrey and Mike. I loved them together and think they were really cute together but for the most part I couldn’t feel it. I liked the action aspect though. Everything she has to go through, mike trying to hide his own secrets..... it kept me intrigued. I feel like maybe some things were open ended and not really as resolved as I would have personally liked. Maybe there will be more to this cast of characters in the future. I really did love seeing Nora again. I truly love her character. 3 stars #2OCCJD

The Best Friend was a good read. It took me a little bit to get hooked into this one. I really loved The Tutor and The Brother, this one was not as good as those two but it was still good. This is Aubrey’s story. You don't have to read The Tutor and The Brother to read this one but if your read The Tutor, you have meet Aubrey as Nora's friend. She had things goign good then she was at the wrong place at the wrong time and get kidnapped. This one is a twisty read and things may not always be as they seems. It's definitely an interesting read.

Expect the unexpected with K. Larsen's books. That's what I tell myself. She always throws me for a loop with her writing. That's why I love her books.
I was looking forward to this book. But I will admit. It was not my favorite in the series. I was not a fan of Mike. But felt Aubry was strong and new what best for herself. It was a quick read.

I have to hand it to K. Larsen: she really knows how to mess with my mind in the very best way! The Best Friend is definitely my favorite of the series (so far) as I was desperate for Aubry and Mike's story. I expected a frenemies to lovers kind of story as these two have danced around each other in the prior two books. What I didn't expect was this totally wild storyline where Aubry is at the mercy of a human trafficking ring and Mike suddenly being her only hope for survival. I mean, wow! I did not see this book coming at all and I am extremely happy to say I am thrilled at how it all unfolds.
There is a reason Aubry is known as 'the fighter'. She is as tenacious as they come and I was truly wowed by her stamina and the desire deep within to find her freedom. I can definitely see where she caught Mike's attention over and over again as her spark and witty sarcasm kept him on his toes. As the story progresses and I don't want to give too much away, Aubry is suddenly caught in a "gaslight" kind of situation and I was almost as lost as she was, wondering if she didn't imagine what had happened to her during her sudden disappearance that starts off this book.
The author very cleverly keeps both Aubry and the reader guessing as we get both she and Mike's POV and it's race to figure out who is telling the truth. At times I thought I had it all figured out but then I would be thrown for a loop right along with Aubry and I would be scratching my head once again wondering what on earth has she, 1) uncovered and 2) what exactly is Mike's role in all of it.
The poor woman's head was spinning as she tried her hardest to tell the truth and yet tried to protect Mike even when he ignored her pleas for honesty. But these two have a spark that can't be denied and I could only hope right along with them that a simple HEA could emerge from all the complications that continually arose. Liam, Nora, Lotte, Eve and even Detective Salve are all there as this adventure has every kind of roadblock possible. But the true devotion, the love they all have for one another certainly helps when Aubry and Mike find themselves in hot water more than once.
I loved the bit of mystery and the ongoing struggle to right the wrongs both Aubry and Mike encounter throughout this book. Their connection is a strong one and I found myself sighing as their timing proved to be their biggest setback. But the stolen moments together, particularly on a hot, steamy beach far away from the world they knew, were proof they clearly loved each other no matter what.
The Best Friend kept me riveted with each turn of the page and it became a much more powerful read than I ever imagined. This, together with The Tutor and The Brother, are incredibly well-written stories that are definite must reads. The Therapist will be next and the little preview at the end of The Best Friend has me excited for more.
I happily give The Best Friend a solid 5 stars!

After reading The Tutor and The Brother I had to get my hands on The Best Friend. As soon as I started, I couldn't put it down. Once again, K. Larsen had me hanging on the edge of my seat.
The story is told through Aubry's and Mike's POV.
Aubry Clark, Nora's best friend is at the docks setting up a photo shoot for an upcoming project. She hears a scream and turns around. What she sees is the her biggest mistake and when she's caught her first reaction is to run but she doesn't get away.
She wakes up in a concrete room with no idea where she is. The only thing she knows is her captors speak Russian. They feed her enough food and water to keep her alive. She attempts to fight them and fails when they have other ways to keep her quiet.
The time Aubry is held hostage, she thinks of Mike often and wishes she would of told him how she really felt about him instead of playing games.
"The very night I met him, he swept me off my feet. He kissed me while I laughed. Is that even a thing? A laugh-kiss? I decide yes, it's a thing. A very perfect kind of thing. He's the one I can't forget. He's in my bones, here in the dark with me."
Detective Salve shows up at Mike's house. He's questioned about Aubry's whereabouts. Because he's the last one to talk to her, he's brought in for questioning.
Aubry's friends and family are worried about her because it's not like her to disappear without a word.
When Mike finds out Aubry is missing, we learn he feels the same for Aubry.
"When I can't sleep at night I think of her. The way she's a pony-tail and mascara only weekend girl or that she rocks flip flops and cut off jeans because it's easy. An endearing quality many women overlook these days. Simplicity is beautiful. Sexy isn't about how much skin you flash. Sexy is about flashing as little as possible to make someone want to see more."
Aubry and Mike have a connection. You can feel the sexual energy between them but there are parts I was left confused with how Mike handled certain situations. At first I didn't trust him then he grew on me.
"Just when you think love isn't enough, it becomes enough. We do this dance so well that I acquiesce without fight to his silent demand."
"You're like a fever, Aubry. And this fever, it burns me. It consumes me. I'm a man waiting for a stubborn woman. One who I worship. One I love as she is. One I accept without the promise of change. I choose that. I want that."
There are lots of surprises and twist in this story. Secrets are hidden and if they're revealed it could possibly destroy friendships. Is one willing to risk their life to save another, the one they love?

When I found out K Larsen was writing The Best Friend, I became ridiculously excited. Having devoured the dark twisted amazingness that was The Tutor and The Brother, I could not wait to revisit this world of broken characters who are for ever changed because of the unspeakable situations they find themselves in. The Best Friend is Aubry’s story, Nora’s best friend. While technically, you can read this without having read The Tutor, I suggest reading it first.
Aubry has loved through Nora’s trauma and her life seems to be exactly where she wants it. Her design business is taking off and on the verge of huge success and she is invigorated by the push and pull of the relationship she shares with Mike, the wealthy, perpetual bachelor. Her luck changes though, when she finds herself at the wrong place at the worst possible time. Right before sunrise, as she sets up for the perfect shot she has been imagining of a graffiti wall that will be perfect for her decor, she hears a muffled scream. She turns to look and what she sees sets her life on an unimaginable path. She witnesses men in black suits, shoving a barely dressed girl into a shipping container. They notice her and she is abducted.
Aubry is an incredibly strong character and despite the horror she faces, she somehow manages to keep her sanity. Just when you think you know where this story is going and what will happen, K. Larsen brings out the twists that make me love her stories so much. Though there is a love story told in this book, it is not the typical one and you will most likely find yourself hating, despising, wanting to kill off the male lead. That is the beauty of this confusing, complex story. Sometimes, the roads life take us on are unappealing and seem to be all wrong, but there is an inherent rightness about it, even if it should be all wrong. This was another amazing read by K. Larsen and one I highly recommend.
