Now he has found a home with the only three people who have ever treated him with kindness.
After his first visit to town goes just as disastrously as expected, he seeks solace in the woods, where he discovers a wounded wolf pup. The merciful thing would be to put her out of her misery. However, his desire to help her is stronger. Could he possibly save her in her condition? Would Elôm even care to help if Jace were to ask Him?
(6,500 words. Available for free to subscribers of Jaye L. Knight's emailing list. Will be available in paperback as well.)
Jaye L. Knight is a hopeless romantic with an active imagination and an AuDHD brain that fuels her stories with twists, adventure, and heart. She weaves tales of faith, courage, happily-ever-afters, and the power of God’s love to light the way even in the deepest darkness. When she’s not crafting fantasy, she dabbles in contemporary romance as Jaye Elliot.
Definitely felt some good old nostalgia reading this!
This short story fills in a gap between Half-Blood and Resistance. As a fan of the Ilyon Chronicles, I enjoyed reading it. I really like Kalli and you get to see Rebekah and Jace meeting. I didn't feel like I was learning anything new but I still liked seeing how some things actually happened.
If you started this series by reading Half-Blood, (as opposed to Resistance), you should read Tyra next, then Resistance.
A cute yet raw short story set between Half-Blood and Resistance that shows more of Jace’s progression towards faith and healing and just highlights what a kind young man he is and how DARE people call him a monster, the horrible jerks!!! 😡🔥
And Trudy the cow is such a realistic animal it’s hilarious—as a farmgirl I appreciate how accurate she is. 😂

Violence: an injured wolf pup (not detailed); injuries and blood (not detailed)
This is a fun short story about Tyra, a black wolf! I decided to read it before I start Resistance, which may or may not have been a good idea. Lol. I do feel like now that I know Tyra's backstory, it will help me when I read about her later.
This is an adorable little short story. I read it in one sitting. No, it isn't as long or in depth as the full Ilyon Chronicles books (it can't. It's a short story). No, you don't learn a lot new about the characters. But, it gives a glimpse into Jace as he is in transition in that time between Rayad freeing him and the events in Resistance. This is a short story about Jace slowly healing. Slowly feeling like he is finding a home.
Characters: Jace is just as sweet and relatable as always! Rebekah is such a dear! Aldor and Kalli are the sweetest! Rayad is the best! And puppy Tyra was blooming adorable!
Language: N/A
Romance: N/A
Overall: This was adorable! Sweet and fit perfectly into the timeline of the series! I enjoyed it so much!
What a sweet yet deep story. Everything is deep: the feelings, the struggles, the pain, the hurt, the rejection, the daily farm life, the thoughts in Jace's heart. I loved the references to Jace's past, the picture of his life during this short but restful period, and, of course, poor little Tyra. I would have liked to see a bit more of her (the Tyra on the cover as well as small Tyra!), but this is Jace's story, and a very important one at that.
One question I had while reading: why were Jace's friends so forward in convincing him to go to town? Even if Jace was ready for town, the town certainly wasn't ready for Jace. Couldn't Aldor pave the way in town and tell his friends about Jace before bringing Jace?
I loved Jace's growth even through this short story - and the glimpses of the farm, and the tenderness of the character interactions. Five stars!
Short and sweet. :) Also, it's the smallest, cutest little indie-paperback that I have ever held. ^_^
I recommend reading it after Resistance and Half-Blood, but you could read it any time really.
Jace feels so young. :O Which I guess means Jaye is doing well with him going from seventeen or so, to wherever in his twenties he is in Exiles (which I just read before this).
Tyra is so cute!! Loved Jace's answered prayer. :)
Nice little short story that, I assume, gives some background on characters from The Ilyon Chronicles (which I haven't read yet). It was well written and so quick/easy to read that I read it in about an hour and therefore didn't bother marking it as Currently Reading. I like the author's style and look forward to someday checking out the larger series.
No content issues to mention.
Worldviews: There is an analog for the Christian God in this world whom the characters call, "Elôm". Some of the characters pray. The Ilyon Chronicles series is Christian Fiction.
This was such a sweet little story! I loved seeing Jace bond with Tyra, and the parallels between how society viewed both of them. The bit in town made me sad, except for Rebekah--I love that girl so much! <3 Loved watching Jace with the farm animals. Still love Kalli and Aldor, and Rayad, of course. Especially love these fragile moments of peace before...everything. 3
Content--mentions of a wounded animal; threats of a fight; slurs and insults; mention of suicidal thoughts in the past
This is a sweet, little story of our precious little wolf Trya and how Jace found her. Really appreciate the back story of this. Trya is a black wolf pup considered bad luck because of her color (but is the most precious, beautiful, kindest creature ever). Jace and her bond after Jace finds her injured in the woods.
And the COVER!!! BLUE AND A WOLF!!! I LOVE IT!!!
Content in Book:
1. A cow giving birth (nondescriptive).
2. Bullies.
3.
4. Racism.
Who I Would Recommend This Book Too:
Those who have first read Resistance. You won't get much out of this book if you haven't first read the book which started it all.
Those who want to read a kingdom adventure novel. Those who want to read a thought-provoking story.
This is cute! We get to see the start of Jace's growth and Tyra comes. I do believe the title is slightly misleading, as Tyra is there for less than half of the story (the paperback is 26 pages, so it's more noticable than a longer story).
As a lover of favorite characters' backstories, this is an awesome addition to the Ilyon world.
(After a reread and in the paperback version)
This is the tiniest book that I own, I think. XD But it's a big punch to the feels and much adorableness in a tiny package, and the cover is absolutely amazing.
This would probably be more interesting had I read the actual series. As it was, it was well-written and engaged me, despite the fact that there wasn't really a central plot. With a 19-page short story, one doesn't have much time, nor purpose, to develop Jace's distaste for going to town and the prejudices of the people. I suppose Rebekah has a future purpose, and so this introduction has a general purpose, but the future implications don't make this a credible story. There was no common thread tying the story together; it kind of just jumped from place to place.
Though the plot wasn't much to speak of, the characters were endearing. I was able to keep the few characters separate in my mind, despite the unfamiliar names. That is, after I figured out who was female and who was male, which is not exactly obvious with their names. (Just one minor reason fantasy is not my favorite genre ...) As I said before, I liked the writing style, which made me feel this fairly quick read wasn't a waste of time.
I have not read any books from the series, so this book left me with many questions. I enjoyed the author's writing, but felt something was missing...like I should have known something. I have no idea what or who Jace is and his importance. Rebecca seems important, and I loved her boldness, but her appearance was brief. Tyra's situation was sad but hopeful. Again, not sure of her significance, but the ordeal allows you to see Jace's heart and struggles. I liked Kallie, Rayad and the other male character..drawing a blank on the name. They were kind and patient with Jace. I'm hopeful that when I read the 1st book, this book's information will make sense. I liked that this was a very clean read. I hope the entire series is clean too.
