Light & Bold

Rate this book

Carlos Trillo was an Argentine comic book writer. Trillo began a prolific career as writer already at the age of 20, writing his first story for Patoruzú magazine. Trillo created, together with Horacio Altuna, the strip El Loco Chávez, which appeared every day at the back of the newspaper Clarín from July 26, 1975 to November 10, 1987. After that, the strip was replaced by El Negro Blanco, which he wrote for the artist Ernesto García Seijas until September 1993. He married writer Ema Wolf and had two children. He participated on the creation of several comics including Cybersix in 1992, with Carlos Meglia, and the Clara de noche and Cicca Dum Dum series with Jordi Bernet. He has also collaborated with Alberto Breccia and Alejandro Dolina. In 1999, his work La grande arnaque won the Prize for Scenario at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. He died in London on May 8, 2011, while on holiday with his wife.

This is the funniest retelling of Beauty and the Beast I've read in my life!

That's saying a lot, and there's no exaggeration on my part. I really have read more reinterpretations, retellings and mash-ups of this tale as old as time than I care to recall, more than I've shelved here on GR. I've even read the original French version, which is a longish novel and not a "fairy tale" exactly, as well as the folktale that supposedly inspired it. In sum, I've read it in all types and genres. But until now I could never say I'd laughed a lot at a Beauty & Beast story.

And laugh myself silly I did, for this version by Spanish author Carlos Trillo and illustrator Jordi Bernet is meant to make you laugh. It's a parody of both the Beauty and the Beast tale and a parody of high-stakes international espionage thrillers. Our protagonists, Light and Bold, couldn't be more hilariously mismatched. She is an insensitive beauty of perfect physical proportions that incites the drooling lust of everyone who looks at her, often causing disasters as she walks. And by insensitive I don't mean personality-wise: she really cannot feel anything, no emotion good or bad and no pain, because of a biological brain anomaly she was born with that's rendered her completely unable to feel anything at all. For that unique trait, she's recruited by a secret organisation to work as their spy and expendable mole, as she's insensitive to both seduction and torture.

Bold, on the other hand, is a big gorilla of a man. And I do mean that literally: he does look and act like a gorilla! He's just huge and terrifying. His job is to be a hitman for the same organisation that's trained Light, and as part of her final test before the Grand Mission, they have him examine her personally. But unfortunately for the boss, what they didn't foresee is that Bold is deep down a very sensitive man, r-e-a-l-l-y sensitive, and completely the opposite of Light. He feels strongly about everything, and without expecting it, he falls for Light.

The consequences are a laugh-out-loud series of mishaps and espionage spoofs that would make Austin Powers proud, with pervert British aristocrat spies, sadistic doctors, obsessive Russian double-agents, unscrupulous CIA agents, Japanese martial art crazies, and all sorts of peculiar creatures fit for a madhouse more than for key matters of international policy. Trapped amongst those, Light and Bold are tossed from here to there to yonder as pawns, for both are due to their natures rather unaware of how badly they're being treated, and when they do, they have to fight back albeit clumsily.

You can see that both Trillo and Bernet had a good time laughing between themselves whilst creating this. It has no pretension to telling a good story, just a story that's entertaining visually, and the reliance on goofy scenes that not always tie in one to the next is frequent, so you won't be finding a great straight story of love and espionage here. But if you think you can have fun with parodies that mix love and espionage (and Beauty and the Beast), then this is for you. If just for the art it's worth a read, because Bernet's black and white illustration is quite good.

Sounds right to me...

Είναι μια παρωδία τόσο της κλασικής ιστορίας "beauty and the beast" αλλά και των high stakes θρίλερ διεθνούς κατασκοπίας.

All of Bernet's pretty women look extremely similar- where's versatility? Otherwise he's excused, being a stunning artist.

Trillo was so ANNOYING as a character! His writer/narrator schtick got old in a matter of pages because he was just filling in words about himself and his situation without being funny. The artist fills the space in sequential art narrative so he didn't need to add words to beef up his page count. He kept it up til the last panel.

The plot and characters were ABSURD but ****.

This is the second title that Trillo exhibited heavy personal angst "between the lines". Makes me feel sorry for him but I'm rating the story.

Light, most beautiful woman ever, conditioned to the level that she is completely impervious to pain and complete blank when it comes to emotions.

Bold, large gorilla of a man, man capable of destroying buildings by just opening front doors. Large killing machine but with the heart of the poet. When he comes across Light lightning strikes them both and unlikely romance is born. Such a potent force that it will bring doom to anyone standing in their way.

Narrator, voice behind the story, utterly disgusted (lol) by the bizarre story but forced to narrate because, hey, he needs to live off something :):) Authors truly had good time working on this one.

Now put evil scientists, shady arms dealers and spies just looking for a possibility of sex into equation and you get one rather weird, weird story :)

Had a great fun with this one. Recommended to all who are looking for parody on thrillers and spy novels, something strange and funny :)

Marcou a adolescência, li à época do lançamento, e reli várias vezes.
