Jennifer Mills enjoys her San Diego soccer-mom lifestyle. But it all changes the day she meets Jadan, an attractive paraplegic day trader, with a turquoise gate tattoo. He can read her mind and press his thoughts into her head without speaking. SHE IS SUPERNATURAL: Jennifer discovers her new identity as the daughter of Zyon, head military guard to the King of the Realm Beyond. For now she can only visit in her dreams and visions. Can she make their world part of her own reality too? SHE IS MYSTICAL: Jadan gives Jennifer three mystical gems-- red for hiding her identity, yellow to calm her, and orange to guide her in flight. Each one draws her closer to her new nature, pulling her away from the earthly realm. Will she be able to hang on? SHE IS CONFLICTED: Jennifer must leave her children to go on a save-the-world medallion hunt. But that means she must choose a divided life, and she's not sure she can do both well. She also has major concerns for her best friend, Kristin, who gets mixed up with bad blood. Can she save her too?
Book 2, SOUL JUMPER, is now available. Book 3, SOUL SLAYER, is coming soon!

I recently met fellow author Dianne Bright via the lovely social media world that is Twitter. And when Dianne asked me to review her first novel, Soul Reader, her enthusiasm was so high that it practically oozed from my iPhone’s display screen. I explained that I had a lot on my plate – I couldn't guarantee an immediate (or even favorable) review, but even that didn't dampen Dianne’s excitement. Needless to say, I accepted her request.
My hard copy finally arrived via ‘snail’ mail and I quite appreciated the simplicity yet attractiveness of the cover. It certainly matched the book’s theme. And, once I had the time to begin reading Soul Reader, I definitely appreciated that it was well-written. (Dianne had previously assured me that she had used several editors – a fact that was now very apparent).
Moving on to the story, Jennifer Mills is a writer who lives in San Diego with her husband, their three children and one very lovable dog named, Nugget. When she’s not bustling about, taking children here, there, and everywhere, she can either be found surfing at one of the local beaches or at Starbucks – writing while spending time with her best friend, Kristin.
When readers begin their literary journey through Soul Reader they will discover themselves in one of Jennifer’s dreams. It’s an odd dream too – one filled with flying red-eyed monsters and unusual looking celestial creatures. In this dream, Jennifer is known by a different name and even has her own pair of brightly colored wings. Of course she eventually wakes up, and her life continues as normal – or does it? Quite often she finds odd white feathers in her daughter’s room, she continually sees enormous butterflies that do not belong to this world and then there’s this mysterious paraplegic man she’s inexplicably drawn to even though she’s happily married.
In the days following this dream, Jennifer’s mind is slowly freed – allowing her to acknowledge an additional reality that most people are unaware of. Without providing anything further – Soul Reader was an engaging and fun read; a well-written and interesting first book of a new trilogy.
Anyone who enjoys YA Fiction, Fantasy and/or Christian genres should enjoy this tale. And, congratulations to Bright for an entrancing debut novel.
I won Soul Reader in a Goodreads Giveaway. Following is my honest review:
Jennifer Mills is a busy wife and mother, with a career as a writer living a seemingly normal life in San Diego. This book immediately drew me in with an out-of-this-world dream sequence involving flying to a beautiful world alongside a beautiful man with her very own set of wings. When she later finds a mysterious feather in her daughter's room, and then starts seeing beautiful large butterfly's, I was intrigued and hooked.
Soul Reader is a beautiful, magical and imaginative story that is well written and worth escaping into its richly drawn fantasy world.
This is a great read! It is very captivating and imaginative. I like how the real world and fantasy world are meshed together. I will definitely check out the rest of the series!
I had to backtrack & read this first book in a series and you can definitely read them as standalones. This is a book of reality meets fantasy with a main character who is a normal Mom, wife who just happens to be a soul reader! Vivid descriptions suck you into this world of good vs evil. I compared the 2nd in this series to a Cassandra Clare novel & I think it applies here as well. Thanks to the author for this copy in exchange for review:)
Soul Reader by Dianne Bright revolves around the main character named Jennifer Mills. Jennifer’s life is similar to many of the books target readers in that she is a mom of children, as well as a daughter, wife, best friend, writer and Soul Reader. Jennifer is such a relatable character that the author could be writing about you or your friends. The book foreshadows Angels and Demons and a war between good and evil, all the while featuring sparkly gems and beautiful over sized butterflies. The author so vividly and richly describes the environment that it transports you into the book, all the while being an easy, albeit long (302 pages) read. Also, an added bonus for San Diego North County/Encinitas residents, the book is full of fun local area references as well as many different literary references.
The quality of a good author and book is that they can transport you to a different world. This book is a wonderful way to take a break from this world, and a way to enter into a new realm.
Soul Reader takes you on a journey from Earth to the Realm Beyond (Heaven) and down to the Dark Realm (Hell) as it glitters your imagination with sparkly gems and beautiful butterflies. It captures your curiosity with foreshadows of Angles and Demons while stirring your emotions with a war of good and evil. And all of this excitement is intertwined with the daily life of Jennifer; daughter, wife, mother, best-friend, writer …soul reader. It’s a must read.
This is a great read! It is very captivating and imaginative. I like how the real world and fantasy world are meshed together. Do angels walk among us? Is your neighbor actually a guardian angel? Are there others worlds which we have not yet discovered? This book opens your mind to other possibilities and other worlds not yet known. I will definitely check out the rest of the series!
Beautifully written with an everyday character I could relate to and a fantasy world so richly described that I wanted to jump right in and take part in the story. Thought provoking and full of heart, with page turning magical moments and strong characters. Can't wait to read the next one! Highly recommend!
From the minute I started reading until I read the last word, I was completely captivated! The writer easily drew me in with the normalcy of Jennifer's life and blew me away with how I felt like I was really there experiencing everything for myself. I love the extra touches of the angel's names all starting with a Z and the beautiful descriptions she provides. I can't wait for the sequels!
Soul Reader by Dianne Bright made me read the whole story on the day I started reading. The story is unique and imaginative. The main character, Jennifer's everyday life (as a mom, wife, daughter, friend...) is close to mine (many moms and girls would agree), so I fell into the story easily. Other characters are also beautifully described. Can't wait for the next one.
Really enjoyable read. I was drawn in by the authors writing style. Love the captivating and imaginative details and the feel of real life and fantasy rolled together. I wasn't able to put the book down. The story is filled with magic, faith, love, adventure, beautiful butterflies and even some deception. Must read!
This book was a fun read! I will never see butterflies the same way again. You will know what I mean when you read the book. I am truly looking forward to the next one in the series. I think Diane Bright did a great job of setting up the suspense....a little too good...now I have to WAIT!!
All in all I thought this was a good book. I found most of the book was devoted to character development until the last 100 pages or so. I liked how the story ended in a cliff hanger. I'm looking forward to reading the next two books in this series.
it was an escape read. I normally don't pick this type of book up but I tried it. I like that it blended fantasy with something I could relate to (relationships and the main town Encinitas, CA) fun.
