A young boy is playing with his toys and doesn't want to go to bed. He imagines his toys coming to life one by one, and they convince him that going to sleep is the best way to continue his adventures. As parents of young children know all too well, convincing a child that it is time to go to bed can sometimes be difficult. Bedtime for Buzzy encourages bedtime by helping to lead children to their own conclusion that it s time to go to bed. Bedtime for Buzzy makes a perfect addition to a child's nightly storybook ritual.
T.J. Hackworth is a writer of short stories and children's fiction. For example, he is the author of the book that you are holding right now. His work has also appeared recently in the Wisconsin Review. He lives in (where else?) Brooklyn, New York with his wife and daughter. And he never has trouble going to bed.
4★ Colourful cartoon illustrations that seem (and may indeed be) drawn by a parent or other family member for a little kid who won’t go to sleep.
A Buzz Lightyear-type toy, Moon Man, features on the first page. Next is Captain Pirate and a teddy bear and some Bob the Builder and other toys. Then Giant Dinosaur -a female, I’m happy to report!
Each group has more to do, more to achieve, and hasn’t finished for the day. But Daddy is calling that it’s time for bed.
Buzzy yells NO so loudly, that Moon Man falls over and asks Buzzy
“However will we get the Moon Base finished without rest?
And with that, Moon Man fluffed up his Moon Pillow and began to snore, making the sound that only a Moon Man would make while snoring.”
Gradually, each group explains why we need sleep and dreams, and Buzzy can’t wait to start dreaming. A win for Daddy and parents everywhere!
Cute. Whether kids will be convinced to go to bed, I can’t say, but this is one way to try.
I’ve quoted from my NetGalley preview copy, so it’s possible the text may have changed.
Author has created 4 wonderful characters to help Buzzy sleep. We knew kids became restless while playing games. You have to find innovating ways to make them accept our point. Buzzy is one such kid, so engrossed in his toys that he didn't want to sleep.
But his parents (indirectly) made him realised Buzzy that sleep is essential for his toys to do great things that Buzzy expect his toys to do. One by one each toys went into slumber, which made Buzzy also sleepy. By the time last toy went to sleep Buzzy was drowsy and his daddy put him into bed.

Bedtime for Buzzy is an adventure for children by T.J. Hackworth. Buzzy has had an exciting day playing with his toys. It’s now nighttime and his father says it is time for bed. Buzzy isn’t ready since there are a lot of activities to complete. He and Moon Man are busy building a moon base, Giant Dinosaur has not finished stomping through the Great Divide, and Captain Pirate needs to find the treasure. But he encounters resistance from Moon Man, who wants to rest and urges Buzzy to do the same.
Buzzy plans to search further for the treasure, but Captain Pirate and the crew are tired and refuse to dig any further. They take a well-deserved sleep instead. Buzzy decides to join Giant Dinosaur, although he is beginning to feel a little sleepy himself. Will Giant Dinosaur want to rest like the others or play with him some more?
Bedtime for Buzzy is an adorable storybook for small children to read. They will probably agree with Buzzy because they also want to stay up late when it is time to go to bed. Buzzy’s reaction to his father’s bedtime command is natural too. It is a nicely written novella by T.J. Hackworth, containing about thirty pages.
The novella’s cover and other illustrations are very nicely sketched by Sean Baptist and are vibrant in colour. Each one shows the adventure Buzzy takes with his cool assortment of toys, which children often do with active imaginations. Children will like Bedtime for Buzzy.
This book is a perfect bedtime story for active little kids who love imaginative plays. Buzzy, the hero of this little story is a child like that. When Dad says it’s bedtime, Buzzy is in the middle of many adventures with his toys, and he doesn’t want to stop playing and go to sleep. But then, his toys say they are tired, and they ask to rest. Buzzy is also getting a little bit sleepy, but only when the explorer suggests a way to continue playing while sleeping, Buzzy is willing to put his head down and close his eyes. The illustrations are lovely. They are colorful and they have this childish look as if Buzzy have drawn them himself, which adds another layer to Buzzy’s imaginative play. We never see Buzzy in the illustrations, just the toys. This adds a bit of a mystery to the book, and enhance the feeling that the illustrations are created by Buzzy. I love it!
Buzzy reminds me of my little sister who always refuses to take a daytime nap. I myself have an imaginatively active brain, and sometimes I found it difficult to shut off my mind before bed. But then Courageous Explorer's saying knocked some sense into me, that great things can also be found when you are sleeping. I think I've found my bedtime story! Can't wait to read this to my sister too.
Very enjoyable children's book for bedtime reading. Eye catching art for kids still sitting in your lap.
Oddly, what I felt the story lacked, was Buzzy himself. He has dialogue naturally, but remains "off camera" while the art remains focused on the toys and his interaction with them ala Toy Story.
As such, I think a second edition would be improved greatly by a title page showing Buzzy stubbornly sitting on his bed surrounded by his toys, perhaps even an added panel or two later in the story showing him handling the toys talking and playing with them captioned by his dialogue.
That said, my five year old daughter minded none of this and enjoyed the story very much- which is the important thing.
Seriously an adorable children's book with very nice illustrations. The story concept was simple, but entertaining for children getting ready for bed and my younger cousin, who I read this book to, liked the book so that alone makes this book wonderful! If your little one, or someone you know has a child, likes to read about adventures, this is a good book for them to hear/read. Kind of reminds me of toy story, since the toys in this book talk to the little boy and have adventures, and it also reminds me of the polar express since we never see the little boy of this novel.
Overall, I throughly enjoyed this book and I think other children will love it as well!
The book is excellently illustrated, and calls for little children to sleep..
The story follows four characters - the Moon Man, Captain Pirate, the Giant Dinosaur and the Courageous Explorer to induce Buzzy to sleep. However, its the explorer who finally succeeds, encouraging Buzzy to sleep, so that he can search for the City of Gold in his dreams.
This was a very good book for kids. It's about a dad for a change. The graphics are wonderful. It keeps your attention and has a wonderful story about bed time.
We are proud to announce that BEDTIME FOR BUZZY by T.J. Hackworth is a B.R.A.G.Medallion Honoree. This tells a reader that this book is well worth their time and money!
This is a really cute story! Perfect for bedtime for a young child! Check out my full review on my youtube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCizd...
Buzzy is too busy playing with his toys to want to go to sleep. One by one, his toys convince him that sleep is exactly what they all need in order to complete the tasks before them.
A cute bedtime story book. The pictures are a lot of fun.
Buzzy feels like most kids do, there is just not enough time for adventures. After a full day of fun Daddy comes in and tells Buzzy it is time for bed. Buzzy simply refuses to go to sleep and consults his toys about Daddy’s request. Most of his toys agree that if they want to continue their adventures all of them need sleep. Buzzy is almost convinced to go to bed. It is not until Courageous Explorer tells Buzzy a secret that only sleep can bring.
Bedtime for Buzzy is a cute children’s book that should make bedtime reading fun and convince children that getting rest is not the only benefit of going to sleep. The story moves along at a good pace to keep children interested and has a clever resolution. The illustrations are simple yet engaging. Parents will enjoy reading this bedtime story as much as kids. It is set to come out in hardback November 28, 2016 which would make it perfect for a holiday gift or to get children to sleep during exciting holiday festivities.

Note: I was given this book to review by the publisher. In no way did that effect my opinion or review of the book.
This is a cute bedtime story. Buzzy is playing with his toys. He has quite and imagination as his toys take him to the moon, an island looking for pirate treasure, getting chased by a dinosaur and even trying to find the mythical City of Gold. When his dad tells him it is time to get ready for bed, he balks. As his toys all tell him they need to rest before continuing his adventures, he becomes more and more tired. Finally when his dad comes into the room, he realizes it is time to go to bed to continue his adventures in his dreams. We all have either had or know someone with a little one that does not want to stop playing when it is time for bed. This would be a great bedtime story for them. The illustrations are cute, simple and almost look like a child has drawn them (they are well done) and would definitely be relatable by children. A good book for a family library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via Netgalley.
Bedtime for Buzzy by T.J. Hackworth Bedtime for Buzzy by T.J. Hackworth is a fun children's story for children who might not want to go to bed. It's about a little boy who doesn't like bedtime. He wants to keep playing. His toys come to life and encourage him he needs the rest to continue his adventure.
My favorite little boy wanted me to read it again so I gave it four stars.
I received a complimentary copy from Downtown & Brown Ventures LLC and NetGalley. That did not change my opinion for this review.
Bedtime for Buzzy" is a delightful story about a recalcitrant little boy who won't go to bed because he is too busy. Indeed, his toys tell him that Giant Dinosaur has to stomp through the Great Divide, Captain Pirate must find the hidden treasure, and Courageous Hero must find the City of Gold! Even Moon Man must finish his moon base. One by one, however, they fall asleep, telling Buzzy that they must rest up for their great adventure. After Courageous Hero explains that his adventures take place in Buzzy's dreams, Buzzy excitedly goes to sleep.
Parents will love the story and illustrations that will gently convince their own little Buzzys that bedtime is not so bad after all.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for review, as always the opinions are my own and voluntary.
AWWW this book was darling, it is a bedtime story for this kids that may not want to go to sleep and rather be adventuring with their toys. This book made me smile as this kid went on quite the adventure before it was bedtime. I think this book is fantastic for imagination and those adventurous kids. I loved the story and even when he went to sleep he was still going to go on an adventure. Such a cute children's book.
My baby girl loves this book. I was scared it might be too long for a two year old, but she was transfixed. The first night I read it to her, she wanted to read it three times. She has now memorized many of the lines and loves the pictures. She roars when she sees the dinosaur and says 'shhh' when she sees Moon Man sleeping. I received an advanced copy of this through Netgalley. It's a total hit in our house and is now in heavy rotation at bedtime.
Simply put, Buzzy doesn’t want to go to sleep, despite all his toys urging him to. He imagines all the adventures he could be having with them until he’s reminded dreams are good for that too. One of the first brightly colored paintings that caught my attention featured toy astronauts and dinosaurs. . . so immediately I thought Toy Story. The drawings of Moon Man’s perpetually shocked face are priceless and the highlight of the whole book. 3.5 pushed up to 4/5
This book was enjoyable and I would definitely look at getting a copy to keep. I really hope it works and helps get younger children to head off to sleep a bit quicker. I know quite a few children and parents who are struggling with this at the moment so will let them know about this book. I received a copy of this book from the publishers in exchange for an honest review.
Very fun and sweet bedtime story with beautiful hand drawn illustrations.
The magical tale of a little boy named Buzzy who resists his father's message"It's time for bed", until his toys came alive and persuade him that going to sleep is the best way to continue his adventures with them.
This was a quick, fun read, and one that I think would work well as a bedtime story for children. It would be fun to read aloud, and may influence children to go to sleep when asked (at least, one would hope).
I've been reading this book to my daughter every night since we got it - we both love the various adventures the characters go on (we're particularly partial to the Moon Man) and love the illustrations. A great read before bed!
cute bedtime story about a boy who doesn't want to go to sleep until all of his imaginary friends remind him of all the adventures they can continue tomorrow if they get their rest
Bedtime for Buzzy is a lighthearted, if lacking in fine detail, book about the moments before bedtime. It deals with the fact that you don't need to stop imagining or playing just because its time to sleep. This is a book for fairly young students, in my opinion, and as such the illustrations are geared that way. They are colorful, fancy, and take up the entire page. The story lacks a main character visually, and we are left to imagine who that might be. I am of the opinion that with a story for children this young, the child reading is the imagined Buzzy of the book. I think this book would be a good tool for kindergarten or first or second grade by asking them to keep a journal of activities they were doing before bed, or even a journal of what dreams and adventures they have. I enjoyed the book, but definitely feel it is geared to a younger audience.
With bed-time fast approaching, Buzzy is quite distraught. He simply can’t bear to leave his toys behind long enough to go to sleep. He entreats Moon Man, Captain Pirate and Giant Dinosaur all to stay up with him, determined that one of his adventuring friends must surely prefer to be awake over the boring alternative of sleep.
T.J. Hackworth’s Bedtime for Buzzy is a wonderful picture book that is perfect for classroom reading and bedtime stories. This clever little tale is one with which children will certainly relate, and that will encourage kiddos to put their toys aside as they joyfully head off to a land of slumber wherein further adventures most assuredly await. Recommended for home and school libraries, Bedtime for Buzzy has earned the Literary Classics Seal of Approval.
I didn't care for this book. Imagine a parent making up a bedtime story for his/her child in order to communicate something specific to his/her child. The child then likes the story so much, the parent gets to tell the story frequently. Then someone says, "Hey, you should make that into a book." Yup. That's this book. Meh
