Fleeing the English army that murdered her family before her eyes, Anna Braxton rescues two young women, kidnapped by a barbaric Highland clan only to find herself unjustly imprisoned by the clan she aided. Disgusted by her treatment, she counters their belated offer of friendship with anger and distrust. But she does not count on the unexpected effect the laird’s son has on her heart. Duncan MacGregor does not understand his da’s command to imprison the young woman who saved his sister’s life. He is more than intrigued with Anna’s skill with a bow and sword—in fact, he is fascinated by everything about her, in spite of her lack of feminine wiles. Straightforward and with a deep-seated sense of honor, Anna Braxton disrupts his entire notion of a suitable woman. Trained as a warrior and unwilling to be any man’s chattel, Anna shuns the idea of marriage—until Duncan coaxes her into a world of acceptance and passion she never knew existed. He wants her as his wife. She will agree, but only on her own terms—conditions Duncan is not sure he can accept.
Do you like a colorful bit of history with your romance? In this first book showcasing strong heroines, travel the Silk Road during the 9th Crusade to find the authenticity for Anna’s skills. Her father, awarded a small barony in the Scottish/English borderlands for valor in a campaign against Tripoli, brings home with him a Chinese body guard who repays the baron’s kindness by teaching his son and daughter a wealth of Far Eastern skills in survival, weaponry, hand-to-hand combat, and healing.
Amazon best-selling author Cathy MacRae enjoys weaving tales of romance in the Highland mists. Her stories feature strong heroes and feisty heroines in pursuit of their happy-ever-afters in medieval Scotland.
When not writing, Cathy can be found curled up in a chair with a book or enjoying the outdoors with a German Shepherd or two. She is currently working on another Highland romance novel and planning her next trip to Scotland.
Historical purists won't like this book. Those who gobble up dominant men bending submissive women to their will definitely won't like this book. But if you love kick-a**, capable and smart heroines (no matter the time period) and a high degree of action running alongside a satisfying romance, this is a book you will want to pick up.
Anna Braxton is a woman centuries ahead of her time. In fact, she has more in common with most heroines I read in science fiction romance books than female characters in historical or contemporary romance books. Imagine Trinity from "The Matrix" dropped into 14th century Scotland, but fighting with swords instead of guns. The love interest is laird-in-training Duncan MacGregor, who is mesmerized by the exotic fighting prowess and confident manner exhibited by Anna when he first sees her. "In spite of her manly behavior, Duncan saw her femininity, her loveliness. Like a viper, beautiful but deadly."
The story starts out as Anna sees her family massacred, and she flees into Scotland to avoid capture. She comes upon Nessa MacGregor and her servant being kidnapped and saves them just before Nessa's brother and his contingent of Highland warriors arrive on the scene. As a precaution, Anna is taken into custody because she refuses to answer who she is, where she comes from and where she is going. Anna, not sure of who to trust, figures she may be temporarily safe with this group of Highlanders. However, demonstrating that he fears what he doesn't understand, Nessa's father imprisons Anna for a time. The clever and resilient Anna eventually manages a partial escape, only to be apprehended by Duncan, who finds his admiration for this most unusual woman is completely turning him inside out. He decides he wants her, but understands Anna enough to realize she must accept him on her own terms. "He'd been taught to be a careful hunter, allowing his quarry to come to him." I liked that their relationship wasn't based on manipulation, but rather respect and a gradual, growing intimacy.
The action sequences in this book are plentiful and imaginative. Different weapons and techniques are introduced throughout the story. The author writes an interesting post-script about how she conjectured Anna came into her martial arts experience.
Side characters are fleshed out well, as are the villains. A handful of female relationships are given the space to develop, allowing further insight to Anna. I also liked that while there is a serious tragedy associated with Duncan, he is not portrayed as a man filled with angst and anger. He is appropriately serious and affected, but not maudlin. Anna is also a healer, and Duncan gets to demonstrate that he is definitely feeling better.
I only had two things to grouse about in this book. First, I would have liked some flashbacks of Anna with her family and mentor, making them more real and a stronger emotional anchor to the story. The heart wrenching agony of losing them was diminished because we saw them in such limited context. Also, Anna is certainly a feminist character out of time, but I felt pounded over the head by constant reminders that she was a woman different than all others.
This is a book full of sparring and adventure with well written characters who act as you would expect. A lot happens in this book, but nothing felt rushed and understanding of characters and situations unfolded at a good pace. The author does not rely on too-stupid-to-live moments and the leads are not foolhardy. Misadventures happen to them, and they react heroically. Cathy MacRae has written a very unique character in Anna Braxton who deserves her action heroine status.
This book was a little different from other medieval romance novels in a way that was amazing to read and enjoy. The main heroine was kicka$$ fighter that was so good nobody was her match. I've never read a novel where a woman was better at fighting than a man. It was refreshing. I loved it. I will reread it again.
This was an emotional read for me, I would be lying if I said I didn't tear up a few times. It is an exceptionally well written story, brimming with emotions and full of adventure. I always tend to gravitate towards stories with strong heroines but this one blew me away with how competent, independent and bad-ass Anna was. The story flowed pretty nicely too, a very enjoyable read.
I had a really great time ,great and characters and a very engaging story.
I had a really great time with these very interesting characters and an interesting and engaging story, even with a few twists and turns I never quite anticipated... For me the story was rather slow good night for times at the beginning and Like Both Anna and Duncan I was very angry at her treatment after all she'd done to save Duncan's sister Nessa and her maid, while though in hindsight some of the lairds actions did made sense but they still lacked proper execution and could be carried MUCH much better than they were, I adored both Anna ( with all her many strengths and weaknesses ( though how she could have been soo WELL loved my her family and yet left as left soo completely lacking in self-esteem and self-worth I know not but there ya go ) and Duncan a wonderfully kind and intelligent and Perceptive and of course well built and sexy ;) but typical man at times who lets temper rule his actions and doesn't think before he speaks and let's for too much go unsaid.... But I really enjoyed my time in Scotland With Anna and Duncan and all the characters and all the fascinating things I learned, only thing is that some how with a book thing long and story soo rich it still felt it ended just a might to soon... It felt like too many things were left incomplete, I can't say for certain honestly but even though soo much had been said and done, it just didn't feel enough... And ok if I'm honest I felt a lil cheated we missed their wedding night ... I know 1st hand all ABOUT sex driven stories, right or wrong ? I've read way too many, honestly more than I want at times, O Hey I LOVES Me a GOOD sex scene!! But in a time and place that makes sense in the story that's been built up to that is well written and fun and with slow build that makes it even more fun and exciting.... When it truly makes sense to the story and is true to the characters it's Hot and sexy and a good time for all, and a Good /great story that just happens to have sex it's Great !!! If the story is good enough you'll never really miss the sex, but as I very sadly know, sex is never good enough to make up for a story that is lacking Or non-existent been there regretted, reviewed and elected that many, many times over..... ( if only I could have ALL that money back, not sure what I'd do,but it would be Sweet) But with Duncan and Anna I honestly didn't Need much more sex really but it felt like we'd been teased and teased for soo long about their finally getting together and then it ended on the saying of their vows and leaving the little church/Kirk , that just felt Wrong :( I felt we should have gotten just at least one more chapter with them, I mean she's almost killed, they make up their married and it's over .... Nah that just wasn't right... And on another Note unless there's gonna be a sequel I would have at least like to have seen sweet, sweet Nessa meet her potential new Beau and possible future husband ... Great story, I appreciated all the work and effort that went into it just needed a Wee bit more... Thanks
A good book. I liked the main character quite a bit. It was probably the strongest part of the book. I felt like the climax was lacking though and ruined the story for me. My biggest complaint: Anna's escape from the McNairn Laird. I get the need to prove herself independent and strong, but Duncan turned into an afterthought because of this. There was no compromise in their relationship in the end. Maybe if Duncan was allowed to actually rescue her it could have changed the feel of the book. With out that resolution I'm left unfulfilled. Duncan just seemed too unmanly compared to Anna. I was hoping for some super masculine prowess in the battle to save her, but no. No battle, no nothing. Just once again Anna being cunning and independent. Which is awesome, and I can't believe I am faulting a heroine with actual brains, but with out strong supporting characters it just seemed too unbalanced. Scene after scene I see how skilled and awesome she is. I wanted something more to come out of that. There wasn't really chemistry I guess between Anna and Duncan, because there lacked balance in there character strength. Just make Duncan badass too and have scenes that show it! And wait a minute, did they even have sex? It stopped at the wedding! Come on! I waited the entire book for that. Foreplay is nice and stuff but after numerous mentions of 'waiting', I'm left hanging!

Thoroughly enjoyed. Unlike any historical romance I've ever read. At last, a book about a powerful, strong, intelligent woman that speaks to me. During those times there were female spies however history does not speak of them to often. No simpering misses here. And falling in love with this type of woman can be difficult as proven by Duncan. Thankfully he wasn't a spineless brute of a man nor was he too perfect. He owned up to his own shortcomings and fought for her when she was wronged. I hope a sequel or at least Nessa's story is told. I am quite curious over Blaine.
Highland Escape is a good read if you love historical romance with a kick-ass heroine. The only thing that stops me from giving full 4 stars is Anna's too many warrior skills. Well, I love Anna and I love how she kicks ass and so different from other females in historical romance. I don't mind her fighting skill it's just that she has too many she should become an assassin and the plots are too trying to show these skill rather than other aspect and while there’s emotion and romance in their relationship it didn’t intensify until toward the end. Anyway i love Anna’s strong character and how she is no damsel in distress and how the book portray concept of love and marriage.
I really enjoyed this book. She was a kick-ass heroine in a time when females were timid and docile. Luckily, she found Duncan, a Scottish warrior, who loved her for what she was.
I really enjoyed reading this book about a strong woman, both mentally and physically. During a period when women were merely chattel, this is a well written novel that opens your mind to the idea of a woman warrior who had superior skills and done unbelievably. I would definitely recommend this book to another. It has action, holds your interest, great characters, and just enough romance.
Five stars for a well developed story. The hero and heroine were both likable and full of admirable character traits. I really enjoyed the fact that the heroine was so strong and independent.
Loved this book! Loved a heroine with martial arts skills and strong personality! Anna rescuing herself was wonderful! Write another book about her please!!
Trained since birth by some sort of Japanese ninja, this paragon of virtue (heroine) has the skill of a surgeon, can cook like Martha Stewart, fight like a gladiator, shoot an arrow better than Robin Hood, is as smart as Aristotle, but more so because she speaks multiple languages, is beautiful beyond measure, can train horses as well as domesticate wild wolves, has infinite capacity for pain as she was able to stitch her own wounds without batting an eyelash, is also a dentist, And the list of improbabilities goes on and on and on.
While these traits were merely annoyances, my biggest issue with the heroine, who is 19 when the story starts, is that she is unyielding in everything and has bigger balls than the hero. Totally not sexy when you're unwilling to compromise and have to have your own way all the time. The hero really came across more as a lesser character who played second fiddle to her.
While said hero is smitten with our ninja/gladiator heroine from the very beginning and promises to keep her safe, he never does! She is constantly rescuing herself and others and is a total one woman show who needs no one - how pray tell is this a romance?!
What's really funny is that the heroine's fighting style reminded me of something straight out of the movie the Matrix, but in the 13th century!
"...Using his sword as a ramp, Anna took a quick step upon his blade, closing the distance between them. Swords crossed in front of her, a blade by each ear, she swung each arm violently across her body as her voice gave cry to her anger. Both blades bit deep into his neck, and Anna straddled him as his life bled out. One spasmodic jerk, and his body stilled forever. Anna swiveled her head, searching the crowd, her enemy’s blood spattered over her. "
“I am Anna of the clan Elliot! My grandfather is laird! I am marked as a warrior by my clan!” She ripped her tunic, exposing her shoulder, neck, and arm, her blue markings visible to all. “Anyone else who takes issue with my presence can face me now!” She turned slowly, her stare defiant.
I love a warrior woman storyline but this was too much even for me. Think Anna needs to shave her balls and lay off the testosterone injections.

Highland Escape AUDIO by Cathy and DD MacRae was one of the better highland romances I have read (listened to). Anna Braxton had been hunting with her brother when they returned to their father's keep to see it in flames and her father dead. Her brother rushes into the fray where he is also killed. Although she has promised him to seek refuge with her grandfather, she doesn't want to rain trouble down on him and so she just rides, north. After being in the saddle for a couple of days she comes upon a group of men intent upon molesting the young women they have captured. Anna can't allow this to stand and so she attacks. There are 6-8 men and she quickly dispatches most of them, when yet another contingent of men arrives. They are the clan to whichs the young women belong and they kill the remaining warriors and capture Anna. Returning to their keep, the laird commands that she is a prisoner and send her to the dungeons, unsure of who she might be. He has already sent a rider to ascertain that information.
Duncan is the son of the laird and will someday replace him as laird. He argues that Anna should be treated as a guest, that she had rescued his sister, Nessa, from those men. After a week, when the rider had returned and given the laird all the information he had gathered, the laird was ready to relent when Duncan, his son, came to him with the information that Anne had escaped her cell and tried to leave. Having a sleepless night, he had seen her and stopped her. Thus began their very tempestuous romance. Anna was a clever warrior employing methods and weapons unfamiliar to them all. She earned everyone's respect. It was a terrific story, full of drama, but didn't feel stilted or manufactured. It felt real.
The story was narrated by Jenn McGuirk, who was the perfect narrator. She had enough of an accent to make it authentic, yet was understandable. Her voice carried the strength necessary to be Anna, at the same time was able to relate with the other characters and make them a part of the story without resorting to the antics some readers employ. She was terrific and made the book!
I was invited to listen to a free e-AUDIO of Highland Escape by the authors. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #ddmacrae #cathymacrae #highlandescape #jennmcguirk
Anna Braxton watched as the English slaughtered her kin, and now she is on the run. She has no idea where she is going, but she is determined to put as much distance between herself and the English soldiers as she can. But then she stumbles upon two women who are moments away from being raped. She cannot stand by and do nothing. She has to intervene. But by doing so, it means her path will cross with the MacGregor clan.
Duncan MacGregor has never met anyone like Anna. A woman warrior is not unheard of, but the things that Anna can do are beyond anything he has ever witnessed. But although she saved his sister from a terrible fate his father, the Laird, looks at Anna with suspicion. How will Duncan convince his father that Anna isn't the enemy? And how will he convince Anna that he is worthy of her love?
They say you cannot judge a book by its cover, and I know this to be true, but when I saw the cover of Highland Escape (Hardy Heroines #1) by Cathy MacRae, I knew I just had to read it.
Initially, I was a little sceptical about the portrayal of Anna. I wasn't expecting to read about a 14th Century martial arts expert in Scotland, but actually, Ms MacRae's portray of Anna really worked. It was indeed an interesting twist. I was very interested to read the author's ‘Note to the Reader’ at the end of the book, which explained where she got her inspiration from and how the 9th Crusade influenced her story.
I adored the characterisation of Duncan. He is slightly bemused by Anna, to begin with, but he admires her greatly and eventually, as with all good romance, love blossoms. There are many reasons why our two protagonists should not be together, and they overcome many obstacles to find their happy ever after.
I thoroughly enjoyed Highland Escape, and I am looking forward to reading the rest of the books in this series.
I’m rather bewildered by the enormity of the gap between my expectations as a result of the high ratings and reviews vs. the actual book.
- Heroine was a Mary Sue in the most self-indulgent way on the part of the author. Amazingly beautiful! Outshoots every man! Outrides every man! Outfights every man in hand to hand combat! Singlehandedly defeated 6 men in the span of a few seconds! Speaks at least 4 languages! Incredibly skilled and trained healer! Even knows acupuncture! Master at lock picking, too! It became so ridiculous that my suspension of disbelief just snapped outright. I daresay if I'd persevered, I'd have been treated to even more incredible things the heroine was a master of, such as flying or raising the dead.
- Characterization just wasn't very good. No sense of the characters, no connection whatsoever. And the part where she breaks down to weep just left me completely unmoved. It was so wooden.
- While I'm at it, so many of the plot points made no fucking sense.
The very Imaginative twist to this Highland Hardy Heroine Romance is that a noblewoman, in an age of female helplessness and acquiescence, can spend her childhood training with her brother to be a effective warrior who can beat men nearly twice her size. And is was believable!
Trained by the Chinese bodyguard her father rescued during the Crusades, Anna is schooled in the arts of martial warfare as well as healing. I loved this martial arts twist since I was a T’aijiquan (martial Yang style) student for a few years and wondered if maybe her moves were mostly Shaolin but the rope dart was a new one for me.
Anna is a very, very cool heroine. The development of her character and life situation was masterful. Her adventures in the Highlands as well as the new world of love and intimacy brought smiles and and the occasional teary eyes. I felt there were a few instances where some breath taking plot twists could have easily been sprinkled in but the story was satisfying with many wonderful characters and the historical facts and possibilities avidly pulled me into the story. I much prefer the Hardy Heroine series to the other Highlander series.
I liked this book the best of all the 3 Hardy Heroines books I have read so far. Anna comes across as a multi faceted character, not a paragon of virtue which I dislike in other authors writings. She is brave yet fearful, cynical yet innocent, tough yet sensitive and proud yet humble. I also like how Duncan is portrayed. He is her pillar of support, always there but not overly demanding.
Her initial capture and the grieving of death of her loved ones brought tears to my eyes. She reminds me of the daily battles we fight in life, some leaving us scarred, a reminder that life should not be taken for granted. She had to fight for almost everything and her purity shines through the scum threatening to overwhelm her.
My only criticism of the book is that I would have preferred Duncan to be given a meatier role such as being her partner in overcoming obstacles instead of Anna demolishing all of it on her own. After all, a true partnership is when both partners complement each other n revel in it.
Overall I enjoyed the action scenes as I am a fan of Chinese martial arts and i hope to see more of such similar genre in the future.
Love MacRae's writing style, and her characters are rich with both interesting backstories, and compelling personalities that make this an addicting read from the first page.
I would definitely recommend the series to anyone who enjoys badass heroines and "head-over-heels in love w/ her" warriors. She writes tons of action into her novel and Anna is a woman of many talents.
Although I immensely enjoyed the story, I do have a few nitpicking critiques:
- Anna was a touch too independent for me. She was hard-headed and could find no compromise, it was either her way, or no way. And although I love the female empowerment, and not submitting to the nasty men around her, Duncan wasn't that. He treated her nothing but fairly basically the entire way through except for a slight hiccup at the end. And to be fair, at the time, what she was doing (which was a lot) definitely would have reflected negatively on Duncan, but I digress.
- Although there was passion and tension between the two characters, I'm used to a little bit more spice in my historical romances, so I was disappointed when there was no consummation to their HEA.
I downloaded Highland Escape as a free book from Amazon. This is a book I normally would pass over, even as a freebie-- I've never been a big fan of the Highland Romance genre, but the blurb suggested a strong, warrior female protagonist so I thought I'd give this one a try. Score! I loved it. A powerful female lead who stays strong and principled throughout the story. Rare, nowadays, as writers often succumb to equating love with softening or weakening a good protagonist, Unfortunately, Anne often overpowers the male character, but overall, I'm happy with the balance. Anne fought, taught, and managed to keep her wits through the whole story. She and Duncan had a few rough patches, but they were both communicators who managed to not go off the rails over misunderstandings. I really enjoyed the plot, the characters--primary and secondary--and the historical information woven into the storyline. Well done-- I'll check out more of the series.
This is my first read by Cathy MacRae and definitely not the last! The book started with a gripping and emotional scene that instantly pinned me to continue reading on until the end. Extraordinarily written storyline of a woman warrior who relies on her advanced martial and ancient arts training in combat and the healing arts to survive after losing her family and home to an evil man who wants her for himself. Well defined characters and a storyline full of adventure, suspense, plots, twists, and turns that keep you reading to see what happens next. I absolutely loved the different storyline, characters and the intricate fighting scenes especially where she taught the rude hulking warriors that you should be careful what you say to women because you never know when you pick on one who can take you down and hand you back your own a*s! I recommend this book to everyone.
Really enjoyed this book ,Anna Braxton was with her family when they were attacked by the English, saw her family all killed! Anna is well trained in war fare, she handles the knives and bow as well as a man, maybe better, Duncan MacGregor comes to the rescue to save her, Duncan father is Laird of the MacGregor clan, they don't know Anna so decided to kidnap her! Duncan is very interested about Anna, loved how strong and independent she is. Nothing that Anna can't do, enjoyed how story developed between Duncan and Anna, I would recommend you to get this book if you enjoy anything to do with Love story, Scotland and the wars between the clans! I read the book and also had audio book, so it was twice as enjoyable.
I loved the heroine in this story she is strong and can fight better than any man because of her martial arts training. She is running from a neighbouring lord who has killed her family. She escapes to the highlands were she rescues two women from captures and one just in time as she is to be raped by her captures . So happens the girls belong to the McGregor clan but instead of thanks shes put into there dungeon. Although the cheifs son cant believe or feels it is right he still must follow his fathers orders. Both our heroine and hero are drawn to each other. Loved this story its a book I would highly recomend.
SPOILERS ALERT!!!! Anna has had to make a vow to her brother Edrick that she would run to Scotland to their mother's family and not fight! Anna saves two young ladies from an attack which could have resulted in one or both of their lives! McGregor does not trust her! Duncan fell in love with Anna at first sight! Anna feels things for Duncan that she has not ever felt before! Will Anna and Duncan wed? What is the future for Nessa and Isla? This is book one! Book two is waiting in the background and waiting for me to start! Come and join me in the adventure! Cathy and DD you have not dampened my heart desire to try and follow my bucket list desires!
I found this one as part of the nice boxed set, Heroes of the Heart. All of the books in here were good reads with the exception of one. That one was far and away the best of the litter. I must say I am surprised i am the first to review this set. Really well worth the price. I've been happily reading since I purchased it. Now for the exceptional one. Highland Escape kept me reading as I waited to see what happened next. The author's notes at the end of the tale were great. I applaud those inspirational women as well.
I do believe I have found my most favorite heroine ever! Loved the kick-butt, take no prisoners Anna, I just wish we could have seen more of an "alpha" in Duncan as well. I do believe he was able to show his strengths in the way he held himself back and let her handle her own problems/defense without forcing her to allow him to protect her every time. I do hope we see more of these 2 in the future as well as the wolf pup, I can just imagine what kind of protection Anna would be capable of with him!
Thoroughly enjoyable romp through the Highlands, with skirmishes (both physical and emotional) aplenty for the most discerning reader. A heroine unique in her times, with enviable warrior skills and a healing gift, her characterisation was delightfully done, and her lack of womanly wiles was endearing. Matched with a partner who effortlessly swept me off my feet (*cough*channelling Jamie Fraser?*cough*) er, sorry, swept Anna off her feet, and into unknown emotional territory, their romance was charming. Well edited, engaging and enjoyable. Kudos.
Very good book. Scottish romances ain’t just a love story. The heroines is a warrior skilled in every kind of combat from martial arts hand to hand fighting and weapons of all sorts in that time period fast pace. Plenty of action keeps your attention. Never a dull moment with the true Scottish atmosphere. The Scottish were great warriors. If the didn’t have anyone to fight they fought with each other. A romantic group of people fierce country men and great love stories. Recommend this book and these authors to anyone who enjoys the medieval time period.
I loved it , I love a strong female lead and this book delivered. I can't wait to read more from this author. This story had me hooked in the whole time. Five stars
