I am reading all these depressing(ly realistic) books about climate change and the end of the world, so it is refreshing to once again experience this effervescently hopeful and positive vision of a world inhabited by a girl, Coco, who wants to be a witch. Her idea is that magic exists not to demonize and create fear, as in Halloween, but to make the world a better place, as in wicca, maybe. Thus, when this volume opens as the apprentices face a Dragon, her First Big Spell is "The Dragon Disabler Cushion" where the dragon is enticed to just curl up and go to sleep! Peaceful solutions to conflict!
I wish every page could be colored such as the cover, just gorgeous, but really, the drawing is still gorgeous.
I like the technology, all the different sigils, the aesthetics required in the work, the art, link rings (for doing wee spells), using magic for good, as in cooking carapace yam and egg sandwiches, the knights moralis, the rain cleaver, Olruggio--the watchful eye.
The title "Witch Hat Atelier" is in itself a signal (sigil) of Shirahama's deeper commitment to aesthetics, of attention to cool names for things, and style. Art, beauty, peace, matter.

oh, this second installment was even better than the first! i loved seeing the friendships, some easy + some hard, between these little apprentices, and seeing them work together. (i extra love tetia so very much!) i loved the introduction of some new characters and some new groups. i love the brushbuddy, forever + ever. truly, these pages were just filled with so much that was so easy to love. i am not sure how i am going to restrain myself from immediately purchasing volume three.
i go back and forth with wanting to call these cozy, because there is a lot at stake with this plot, but the way i had all the best cozy feelings at a rainy day picnic, under a bridge, with a little magic involved. and the art for those panels was so extra lovely, heart warming, and even hunger inducing.
trigger and content warnings: implied verbal abuse in the past to a child, anxiety depiction, + mention of harm to a parent in vol 1.

The second book of the manga all-girl reduced version of Harry Potter was a real yawner. The girls gotta escape a dragon in a maze and then save some randos from a river that’s burst its banks. What’s the main storyline again? Oh yeah, Coco’s trying to learn magic to save her literally statuesque ma. That’s put on hold for this book! Great…
So the dragon - it sounds interesting, no? But this is a very safe, very cutesy-poo kid’s comic so there goes any tension - you know they’ll overcome it easily. I expected that but I also wondered what the point of it was. Why transport them to a maze with a dragon in it if the dragon’s not going to relentlessly chase the girls - what’s the goal? It just seemed so pointless and was really boring to read.
And unfortunately it continued to be boring. The girls go on a picnic with Master Qifrey, a new adult character called Olruggio shows up and adds nothing to the story beyond exposition on some more new dull characters called the Knights Moralis. Yeesh, no wonder it took me weeks to slog my ass through this crap!
The finale is a dreary set-piece where Coco and co. gotta save some people from a river that’s burst its banks. Oh and Coco and Agott have a one-sided rivalry. Zzz…
I remain totally impressed with Kamome Shirahama’s gorgeous artwork. I loved all the visuals from the myriad witch hat designs and even the interstitials where, in one, Qifrey is simply lying back on a window seat and it looks incredible. The dragon maze was the only part of the book that didn’t do anything for me as those were just a series of blank walls, but the dragon design was terrific.
The second volume of Witch Hat Atelier is pants. There’s just not enough happening here to engage me. The material was thin and too cutesy by far - I’m done with the series!

I just can't stress enough how beautiful the artwork of this manga is. I truly believe the mangaka is an incredible artist. It might be partially because it's very close to my personal taste, but I also just can't find any mistake in perspective, sizes etc. as it happens sometimes in mangas; and the ink work is just astonishing.
Also the story is becoming increasingly interesting and I love all the characters (even after the inevitable clichés); as the plot progresses, I'm realizing how the world-building, even if not 100% original, is complex and satisfactory, and I like the magic system very much.
I just can't stress enough how much I would recommend this manga to anyone who has my same taste in drawings (whimsical, magical and reminiscent of traditional fairy tale illustrations), or to literally anyone for that matter. Incidentally, I would love if some of my friend could recommend to me any manga/anime which has a similar style. Simply wonderful!

Les juro que tengo un amor especial por las historias de brujas y academias.
En este segundo tomo del manga continuamos con las aventuras de coco aprendiendo como ser una bruja. Conocemos un poco más del funcionamiento de la magia y tenemos muchas muchas escenas de acción.
Es mi segunda vez leyendo manga y siento que me gusta. En un solo tomo hay un montón de escenas distintas y todas se toman su tiempo para desarrollarse.
Estaré pendiente de la tercera parte!!!

3.5 stars - I continue to be obsessed with how the artist uses the images to convey Coco's enthusiasm. It's so adorable!! I'm not sure if I'm going to read this entire series yet, though. There's some level of investment that hasn't fully kicked in. Still, I do love Coco with my whole heart

Досить багато часу пройшло від читання першого тому манґи «Ательє чаклунських капелюхів» від манґаки Камоме Шірахама. Тому відразу влитися в контекст подій, які вивалюються на тебе на початку другої частини, було досить важко. Але спершу пригадаємо хто така Коко і що це за чаклунські капелюхи.
Історія розповідає про молоду дівчину на ім’я Коко, яка мріє стати чарівницею. Але в цьому світі це не таке вже й легке завдання, лише небагато вибраних народжуються з умінням практикувати це таємне мистецтво. Коко відкрила любов до магії, коли вона була на фестивалі замку зі своєю матір’ю. З тих пір вона тримається за мрію про те, що одного дня вона зможе чарувати. Невдалий випадок із забороненими заклинаннями приводить її до дверей ательє чарівника Кіфлі, де він дає змогу Коко розпочати навчання чарам.
Сюжет другого тому відразу продовжує події, які обірвалися у кінці першого. Чарівниці й учениці майстра Кіфлі йдуть вулицею та наступної миті — вони потрапляють у альтернативний світ, де вони опиняються перед запеклим драконом. Це випробування — не тільки їхньої майстерності з магією (яка є відверто досить базовою у випадку Коко), а й їхньої здатності довіряти одній одній в небезпечній ситуації. Невідомо, яку ціль переслідували крилаті (небезпечний й заборонений орден чи секта чарівників), але вони точно недооцінили молодих дівчат.
Хоч і значна частина тому зосереджена на подіях у альтернативному світі, але Камоме Шірахама також знайомить нас із новим героєм Оруґіо, товаришем й співмешканцем майстра Кіфлі, основне завдання якого — слідкувати за порядком у Ательє й не допустити нічого забороненого тут. Загалом, подальші події й пригоди відбуваються за його участю.
Та, незважаючи на те, що ця історія захоплює своїми магічними винаходами, хитромудрою побудовою світу та незвичним способом створення магії, сильною стороною манґи є вміння Камоме Шірахами розвивати Коко та персонажів, яких вона зустрічає. Ми дізнаємося набагато більше про її вразливу сусідку по кімнаті Аґотт і про її мету разом із значними ризиками, які вона готова взяти на себе, щоб розвинути свої вміння магії. Ми також побачим�� вчительські турботи майстра Кіфрі щодо його підмайстринь. Але поки ще багато сумнівнів, чому він так прагне навчити Коко чарам. Його мотиви є цілком благородними чи він має інший план щодо неї? Одним словом, дуже приємно бачити, що історія Коко розвивається у багатьох різних напрямках.
Тому, якщо кщо ви любите складні магічні системи, цікавий склад героїв, химерні, але цікаві перепетії, тоді, будь ласка, візьміть «Ательє чаклунських капелюхів» і спробуйте познайомитися із цим фентезійним світом. Мені другий том, як і перший, сильно сподобався.

I love a ton of characters in this series, especially Qifrey, but unfortunately I don’t think cozy fantasy vibes are for me. I need a bit more of a fast paced plot with hard hitting, deep themes out of the manga I read. I most likely will still continue with this series because one of my closest friends loves it, but it’s not really my cup of tea.

CUATRO cosas que me han gustado MUCHO del tomo 2
1. En primer lugar, las reglas con las que se rige la magia de este mundo siguen aumentando. La autora no quiere abrumar con la complejidad del sistema, por lo que ha decidido soltar las instrucciones de a poco. Los elementos, la capacidad de aplicar los círculos en las diferentes texturas y el tiempo que dedica a explicar los mecanismos internos de la magia es fascinante.
2. El worldbuilding se va abriendo poco a poco, el retiro campestre en el que viven las aprendices amplia sus dimensiones en esta segunda fase del manga. Nuevos organismos reguladores, nuevas profesiones relacionadas con la magia, nuevas amenazas y nuevos indicios de un mal que se intuye, pero que apenas se verbaliza. Me encanta que se salpique las historias con todas estas referencias a las que, estoy seguro, la autora volverá tarde o temprano.
3. Empiezan a aflorar los traumas de los personajes. Las grietas comienzan a hacerse visibles. Y eso sólo puede ser positivo. El tomo se centra especialmente en una de las pupilas, la competitiva Agete. Su autoexigencia y su beligerancia dejan entrever rasgos de su persona que hablan más que la poderosa magia que crea. Los hechizos y los fuegos de artificio hacen brillar a las chicas, pero la autora también le dedica tiempo a las sombras.
4. Esta es la historia de un aprendizaje. Y como tal, Quifrey, el mago mentor, no deja de sorprendernos con una sabiduría pedagógica que asusta. La capacidad del mago para analizar a sus alumnas y ver cuáles son sus flaquezas es algo que está muy bien llevado. Algo que me transmite la sensación de progreso y tropiezo, de dinámicas de avance y retroceso. Para muestra un botón:
"Agete tiene la tendencia de dejarse llevar por la angustia de lo que no puede hacer, más que a alegrarse por lo que ha conseguido."
No, resulta que lo de Atelier of Witch Hat no es cosa de un solo tomo. En esta segunda entrada mejora todo lo que hace en la primera y le da consistencia a las partes más dudosas. Estoy deseando ver qué nuevos trucos nos tiene preparados la autora.

Estoy intentando dosificar esta serie de mangas porque no quiero que termine. Recién voy a comenzar el tercero, pero como estoy tan encantada con los personajes, los giros y la trama en sí, quiero disfrutar cada segundo de esta lectura. Así que voy intercalando un tomo entre cada libro que vaya terminando, y de momento funciona. Creo que este segundo tomo está a la altura del primer tomo, me tiene mega enganchada.

2025 Review: I absolutely love this series! This is my first time revisiting the second installment, and I genuinely forgot how action-packed it is. So much happens to Coco and her fellow Apprentices within these pages, and that's cause for excitement and entertainment in equal measure. But we also get plenty of lore and world reveals too, which just makes the reading experience all the richer! We also meet new characters, including Olruggio (who I love!), Mr. Nolnoa and Tartah. I enjoyed my reread, though I definitely forgot that it ends on a rather tense situation!

The four apprentices must work together to escape a maze with a dragon at its heart, giving this volume a very strong start.The relationship between the open and positive Coco and the closed and negative Agott is the core of the book, but the art is the star.

Por fin he vuelto a caer en las redes de Coco y su atelier de magos para una segunda entrega que no hace más que seguir presentando y elaborando su universo. El volumen comienza nada más terminar el primero, con el gran cliffhanger resuelto en los primeros tres capítulos. Las cuatro chicas del atelier han sido transportadas a un misterioso lugar donde aparece un enorme dragón.
En este segundo volumen la autora suelta un poco más de información sobre la complejidad del sistema mágico, repleto de reglas, variaciones e instrumentos que aún desconocemos. El mundo que compone la obra, también. Aparecen profesiones, amenazas y organismos reguladores que hasta ahora habían sido pasados por alto para el lector. El mundo no deja de crecer.
También da una pátina más sobre los integrantes del Atelier. Coco sigue siendo nuestro foco de atención, pero Agete y Quifrey reciben más respaldo a sus personalidades. La aprendiz es todo un cúmulo de autoexigencia traumática para demostrar estar capacitada de ser mago. Y nuestro mago mentor, sigue siendo tan misterioso como pedagógico, tan simpático como enigmático.
La historia sigue teniendo un tono amable y optimista con una capa perturbadora que me da muy mala espina. Y por supuesto, el dibujo de Kamone sigue siendo un plus. Preciosista, detallista y con un aire angelical que viene al dedillo de la historia. Cada página embelesa. Cada cambio de capitulo es una nueva floritura. Cada diseño, es fabuloso. Un diosa con pinceles.
