Danielle Stevens is Hollywood’s “next big thing” in a long line of next big things. When she goes to Dallas to prepare for a role—shadowing Detective Harper Jeremiah—she’s not only running from her fame…she’s also running from a stalker.
Harper Jeremiah wouldn’t recognize a Hollywood actress even if she bumped into one on the street. The last thing she wants to do is to get pulled from her current case to have an actress follow her around. But the perceived babysitting gig quickly turns into a protection detail as the threats against Dani escalate.
The two women form a bond as secrets are shared and they’re forced to trust each other as the stalker turns into a hunter. As they try to hide, Harper finds his pursuit of Danielle relentless…making her more determined than ever to protect Dani at any cost. That unwavering conviction, however, could get them both killed.
Gerri began writing lesbian romance as a way to amuse herself while snowed in one winter in the mountains of Colorado, and hasn’t looked back. Her first published work came in 2000 with One Summer Night. Many more romances have followed, with the occasional murder mystery in the mix. Gerri’s love of nature and of being outdoors usually makes its way into her stories as her characters often find themselves in beautiful natural settings. When she isn’t writing, Gerri and her longtime partner, Diane, can be found at their home in East Texas, where their vegetable garden, orchard, and five acres of woods keep them busy. They share their lives with an ever-changing cast of furry friends. Her favorite pastimes include camping, hiking, birdwatching (though she insists she doesn’t wear funny hats yet!), photography, and cooking. She collects things nature offers, like an unusual pinecone, colorful rocks, or an abandoned bird feather. Dawn is her favorite time of day, the moment right before sunrise... "I love the morning... the beginning of a brand new day. Because even things that we know are unattainable flutter within our grasp. In the early morning—at that cusp of a new day—everything is possible."
It’s a Gerri Hill book so you almost don’t have to say more than that. I’m a big fan of Hill, especially her cops and agents type books, so I was really looking forward to this one. I would not say this was one of my favorites, but I definitely liked it. I think if you are a fan of Hill’s crime books, you will probably enjoy this one. This book actually takes place in the Tori Hunter universe, though Hunter is not actually in this book.
Harper is a Dallas police detective, who has been assigned to the next “Hollywood it girl”. Harper is to let Dani shadow her for an upcoming film role. Harper is already mad about the assignment, but what she doesn’t realize is Dani is hiding a big secret. Dani has a stalker, and that stalker has followed her to Dallas.
This is a crime/thriller/romance, my favorite type of books Hill writes. After so many, Hill knows how to write these books well. There was plenty of suspense, some heart pounding moments, with some romance mixed in. This is the kind of book that has you on edge as a reader. Reading in suspense of what is going to happen and when. Because of the type of book it is more thriller/suspense than romance, but I didn’t mind it. It was damn good entertainment for me.
As I mentioned above, the romance does take a backseat a bit. The relationship is more about two people connecting out of loneliness, need, and stress over the situation. I found myself wanting to yell “no time for sex with a stalker on the loose!” Then later the relationship starts to shift and become the possibility of something more.
I thought the evil stalker storyline was well done. There was only one thing I found obvious and thought I should not be figuring this out before a police detective did. The rest unfolded well and kept me flipping the pages. I read this book in one sitting. I read through and missed my dinner even; I could not put this book down.
If you are a Hill fan or a crime/romance fan, I think you will enjoy this one. As I said the romance is less of a focus, but I have to give Hill props for writing a very satisfying romantic ending. I hope Hill keeps writing, because I’ll keep on reading.
An ARC was given to me by Bella, for a honest review.
“The Locket” reminds me of “Sawmill Springs”, also by Gerri Hill.
I read once that when he was a young child, Alfred Hitchcock was once put in a jail cell by his father as a punishment, or a warning, or something. Hitchcock never forgave the police for cooperating with terrifying a young boy, and that experience was the basis for his films always making the police look like incompetent, blundering idiots. I wonder what happened to Gerri Hill as a young girl?
While MC Harper is a compassionate and determined detective, and her police partner Reed is a decent guy, her superiors and many fellow detectives caused me to sprain my eyeballs with all the rolling this book caused.
Overall, “The Locket” is an enjoyable fast paced police thriller, with excellent narration. Though attracted to each other, neither Harper nor MC Dani are looking for a relationship, and the romance aspect of the book takes a back seat for nearly the entire book. The bad guy is appropriately creepy, and the clown angle is wonderful, given the world’s current view of creepy clowns!
It’s unfortunate that the name of the book is such a clear spoiler for breaking the case that it’s not even a spoiler to mention it here. I’m also scratching my head wondering why, after Harper disobeyed orders to protect Dani, Dani didn’t protect Harper’s job by threatening to expose the Dallas PD’s efforts to save face rather than solve the case or protect Dani. Well, that would have changed the ending, I suppose. Although that too, was slightly unbelievable after setting a new record for the “no communication” lesfic trope.
I liked the characters, the story and the narration very much, but as with “Sawmill Springs” I just have to subtract something for the ridiculous level of police puffery and incompetence. I’m declaring a tie between the books, so “The Locket” earns a solid recommendation with 4.45*
Sadly, The Locket was a huge disappointment. There were too many red flags that I couldn't ignore.
- The detective h was pulled out from an ongoing serial rapist investigation just to 'babysit' the actress h.
- The actress chose to shadow the detective because of the detective's eyes (repetitive info) . There were something magical about them, think Loverboy's - Heaven In Your Eyes. *How nice if loan officers can approve our applications, just by looking into our eyes. Nothing like this though.
- Classic Hill move, creepy male characters. Helpful info - In one of her books, the male working partners who were a lil in love with the leads (and very curious about their relationship) gave them a strap-on and the leads used it happily. I would have called the Winchester bros to get rid of it using rock salt and fire.
- Almost all the characters in the story got a kitchen sink backstory. Instead of feeling sad like a normal human being, I was like - WTF/H
- A kitchen sink unsub. She/He was a stalker - clown - magician - tech genius - rapist - actor - doll lover.
- B.O.R.I.N.G.
- I felt like I was speed reading but whenever I checked on how many pages left, I didn't make a dent.
- A police lieutenant who should join the strap-on, the rest of the police department should go back to the Academy and watch all the cop dramas out there.
I am glad to cross out a book from my to read list and planning to take an indefinite break from Ms.Hill's work. For mystery / thriller fans out there, please trust me - Gaby's Quiz identifies me as such genre fan and I am a huge CSI Vegas(Season 1-5) / Law And Order SVU Fan, although I still fail at solving the who took the cookies from the cookie jar case - there are better books out there.
Gerri Hill is an experienced lesfic author with more than thirty published novels. She normally writes romances or light romantic mysteries which are a good choice if like reading a page-turner mystery without gruesome parts. This is the case of 'The locket' in which hot Hollywood actress Danielle Stevens travels to Dallas to prepare for her next role as a police officer. She meets there Detective Harper Jeremiah who is supposed to show her the daily life of a detective, a job that any of her male counterparts would be more than happy to do as Danielle is incredibly hot. Harper is annoyed with babysitting Danielle as she considers that she's got more important things to do. However, when a stalker threatens to kill Danielle, things escalate fast and the women find themselves running for their lives and increasingly attracted to each other. Will Harper be able to save Danielle and, at the same time, fight her own demons to explore their attraction further?
This is a very entertaining mystery with some romance in the background. Written in third person from the point of view of both main characters, the author builds up the mystery in increments and manages to drop some hints to the reader while the characters are oblivious to it. As the action picks up pace so does the chemistry between Danielle and Harper without appearing forced, as they are, after all, dealing with life threatening situations. The secondary characters support the plot nicely and the stalker comes across as creepy and dangerous at the same time. If you are looking for a light mystery with lots of action (including some in the bedroom) that keeps you turning pages and invested in the characters, then this is highly recommended.
Overall, a very entertaining and enjoyable mystery with some romance at the side. 4 stars.

I love Gerri Hills cop/romance books very much, she’s one of my favorite authors. The Locket is no exception.
Harper works as a police detective in Dallas. Her new assignment is to let Danielle Stevens shadow her for a week. Stevens is the next «Hollywood it girl» and she’s researching for her next role as a cop.
Both main characters have secrets, they never told anyone. Harper doesn’t like her assignment to «babysit» a famous actress. But soon it turns into a protecting tail, because of a stalker, who has following Danielle to Dallas.
The stalker case is very well written, it’s creepy and holds you on your toes with some heart-stopping moments. The only thing I didn’t understand, was, that the reader figures out an important detail before the police.
The romance takes a back seat in this book, but that’s not a problem. First, they connect fast with the case. They spend 24 hours together and learn a lot about another. Both are attracted to each other, but Harper's past and the stalker are keeping them at a distance. As longer the hunt is during, the closer they get and the chemistry increase. First, they are drawn together, out of need, stress, and loneliness until they can’t deny the attraction anymore. It’s something that happens more often in such stressing situations. And after this, the relationship turns from friendship in a possibility of much more.
This book is exciting and I recommend it to every Hill and cop/romance fan. I’m always looking forward to more Hill books, fortunately, I haven’t read all of her books yet. My rating 4.25 stars.
I almost gave up a few chapters in. When the detective picked up a piece of evidence with her bare hands, that almost made me quit reading. She's experienced, so she should know not to do that, right? I am happy I pushed on and finished the book. It was a weird, slow start, but quickly picked up speed shortly after. Hill created tension and suspense beautifully, and the fact that the chapters were short made it all the more rapid. I flew through a good chunk of the story trying to figure out the 'who dunnit?' question before realizing I was nearing the end. The 'a-ha!' moment of the discovery of how the bad guy kept tabs on them made me roll my eyes, more at myself, because it was so blatantly obvious. Who the bad guy was, however, was a nice surprise, because I was sure as sh*t confident it was someone in house, and at one point I thought it was the victim doing it. Once everything was solved and wrapped up nicely, the story kind of went downhill for me. It ended nice, just nice.
Danielle Stevens is Hollywood’s rising star, with a line of blockbusters behind her and her next big role lined up, whether she wants it or not. Set on showing her acting skills as a homicide detective she selects the antsy Detective Harper Jeremiah of Dallas PD to shadow.
Detective Jeremiah is less than impressed to be told she has some actress tailing her, and even when the gorgeous Danielle turns up, to the envy of the male detectives, Harper resists the pull. But Danielle needs her for more than a role model, and when her stalker starts getting serious Harper cannot resist stepping up to protect the woman she has come to like and admire.
Another great Gerri Hill mystery romance. The characters of Danielle and Harper are interesting and complex, their initial interactions, with Harper angry at the assignment and Danielle unsure of how much she can trust the Detective, sets up a level of challenge as they get to know each other. Both have issues that only time and sharing will overcome, which gives the romance an organic development that didn’t feel forced. Both need to make changes in their lives and in each other they find the perfect foil.
The stalker is a nasty piece of work and plays an excellent game of cat and mouse; his actions are utterly unnerving. As he escalates so does the tension and the critical question of who could possibly be quite that sneaky without leaving a trace. Overall the combination of psychological fear, mystery/thriller and slow build romance works really well.
This became a real page-turner as the tension racked up, I couldn’t put it down. Hill has a knack for combining strong characters, vulnerable and complex, with a situation that allows them to grow, while keeping us on our toes as the mystery unfolds. Definitely one of my favourite Gerri Hill thrillers, highly recommended.
Another fabulous Gerri Hill mystery! I love her grumpy detectives that are rough around the edges and soft in the middle. This is another excitement packed story that I couldn't put down. I read it in one day. And as always, there's a HEA after the two main characters, Harper and Danielle, butt heads before falling in love and solving Danielle's stalker problem.
This is as I expected from Gerri Hill. It's a well-written story of an actress with a stalker and the cop that ended up protecting her. I like both main characters, each with their own emotional baggage and flaws. It's an easy enough read with an adequate amount of romance in the mix
I did not particularly enjoy this Gerri Hill. The plot of this one was a famous actress, Danielle Stevens, is being stalked. She is supposed to follow the Detective Harper Jeremiah. There starts to be dolls, balloons and notes left by the stalker as Harper and Dani try to figure out who is doing this. This book seemed to drag for me and I did not enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I felt like the stalker plot point got old and I just wanted to find out how it ended.
I would not recommend this one, as it just dragged and did not seem as good as other Gerri Hill novels.
4 stars Can't say I liked it as much as some other books from Hill, but it was still good. I would've appreciated finding out more about the stalker, like his name, motivation, etc. It would have made it more interesting. Now he was just some nameless evil James Bond who was always five steps ahead and it got a bit monotonous.

I love the connection between Dani and Harper. I really enjoyed how down to earth Dani is even though she’s so famous. Harper treats her like anyone else, she’s not drawn to the fame but to the beautiful soul underneath. Dani helps Harper to move on from the tragic loss of her wife and shows her that it’s okay to feel for someone again. I love them. The killer was everywhere. He would really give you the feeling of nowhere being safe. I like that Harper was able to give Dani a sense of safety. Plus the dolls were super creepy! I was not expecting it to be who it was. I love me, an excellent, Gerri Hill thriller/murder mystery.

This one had me thinking that either we have two killers or one sicko. I really liked the storyline between Harper and Danielle. I always look forward to a new book from Gerri Hill and I am Patiently waiting on the next one. I definitely recommend this book.
Definitely a good story. I enjoyed the romance just as much as the crime story part. However, not everything concerning the stalker felt completely plausible to me (but he is pretty creepy!). In addition, I would have wished for a little bit more intensity between Dani and Harper, once the stalker case had come to its conclusion.
Nevertheless, The Locket is a page turner and a fun read. 4 out of 5 stars.
My expectations are high and perhaps unfair from writers like Hill hence will be giving this book a rating of 3.8 stars. Reason being that as action filled with a dash of romance as this story is, it had a number of unanswered questions i.e. despite the revelations of the stalker how was it possible to ghost in without any evidence? Where the Ann dolls coincidences or connected? Meeting someone you don't know and you immediately offer your apartment is farfetched....I love Hill but i think there are loose ends
This was not an enjoyable read for me. I became frustrated when the cops kept overlooking or dismissing obvious clues. In addition, the stalker had super human abilities to enter locked rooms and cars without setting off alarms or leaving any trace. This was never explained. By the end of the book I found myself skimming just to get through it. 2.5 stars.

4 star Yes, 4 star, almost all of Gerri Hill's books are 4 star ratings from me....if not 5. She just does it for me. Hits all the right notes. This story involves a somewhat damaged female detective guarding a movie star from a stalker. The story is pretty predictable, the two have past baggage that they confess to each other and of course fall in love. The mystery is how the stalker keeps finding them each time they move/hide in a new location. (I dont know...could it be the "LOCKET " ??? ) This is not a spoiler because strangely the book is titled "the locket". This is the main reason I gave it a 4 and not a 4.5. The title ruined the suspense this story could have had. They search her house, car, luggage....they even scan her body for gps devices. Im assuming she took the locket off to be scanned. I wished I had read this as an ARC, I would have emphasized renaming it to "The Stalker". But you still have the mystery of WHO is the stalker and how he does the things he does without be detected. And how will two women with very different lives end up together. I selected the audio version. I am catching up with older books that have now come out with narratives. I was not impressed with narrator Genevieve Bevier. Her voice is a little too light for Hill's sultry characters. But I got used to it about half way through. I would suggest getting the book not the audio.
I must say that this author has really outdone herself with this angst filled, riveting and touching story. This story is the perfect blend of mystery/thriller/romance. The romance did not take away from the story but it enhanced it. Dani is such a sweetheart! She tries so hard to hold herself together in the face of danger and a deranged stalker. I also admire Harper’s resilience because she has been through so much and I cannot imagine going through what she has gone through and still come out on the other side still functioning in the same way I did before. This story really touched me and I really hope that the author will write another book featuring Dani and Harper.
Detective Harper Jeremiah is pursuing a serial rapist when she gets taken off the case so actress Danielle Stevens can shadow her in preparation for an upcoming role. Although Harper is the envy of the precinct, she couldn't care less about babysitting some actress. Things heat up though as the Harper realizes that Dani has a dangerous stalker, and the babysitting gig turns into a protection detail. Soon, it's their lives—and their hearts—that are at stake.
cw: stalking, kidnapping, rape, torture, murder, internalized and external homophobia
This was a really cute (in terms of the romance), enjoyable read. There's also a lot of action, as the blurb and content warning would suggest.
Harper and Dani are both emotionally closed off for their own reasons, and being thrown together makes them open up. It's nice to see them make personal progress throughout the novel, and both characters were really likable. The side characters were also great and added humor to a dark situation.
Writing-wise, the dialogue was a little basic and could have been tighter, but it didn't detract too much from the story, although it didn't really push it forward either. The romance plot itself was also a bit basic, but I found it to be sweet. The action and the mystery of the stalker was what really kept the book moving. The entire story happens over the course of about 2 weeks, so there isn't much lag, and yes, that means the MCs fall for each other rather quickly. I'll forgive them under the circumstances :)
I would definitely recommend if you're in the mood for a fast-paced thriller served with a heaping side of romance.
I kept waiting for some exposition about how the baddie did the things he did (except for that one thing that was pretty predictable), and for some melodramatic links to be made between history and current events, but I didn’t get any of that. In terms of the thriller/crime aspect of the book it definitely doesn’t hold a candle to some of Gerri Hill’s other novels like Hunter’s Way and The Target.
That being said, the journey was great and I couldn’t put the book down. The suspense kept me turning pages and I thoroughly enjoyed the angsty (but campy) blooming romance. I loved the nod to Tori Hunter and, although it likely wasn’t intended, this book felt a little tongue-in-cheek with the parallels to Hunter’s Way - here’s another gay cop with a tragic backstory, falling for a gorgeous blonde while trying to keep her alive. This almost reads like a really good Hunter’s Way fanfiction and I’m a sucker for it - I don’t even know which book was actually published first but I read Hunter’s Way years ago and found great delight in reading this today.
So all in all, I love this novel for what it is and the journey/progression is very much what I’ve come to expect when I crack open a Gerri Hill book.
This was such a lovely, slow burn romance between two unlikely to get together characters. Both characters are so likeable. I loved gruff Harper. She's the no nonsense type who is not easily ruffled nor swayed by the gorgeous movie star Danielle.
Danielle is rather reticent and apathetic about her fame and status and loves that Harper doesn't even know who she is. It was a nice blend of opposites on the outside but not truly once they get to know each other.
Mystery/police procedural part was very well done. It went at a good pace to keep interested.
