This story starts with the very upsetting discovery by a five year old girl, of her father’s dead body, always put down as a suicide. But the little girl, Katie Curtis, has always said that she saw a tall figure with a red baseball cap on, leaving the room just after she walked into her father’s study. Her mother remarried a senator who became Vice President and on the death of her mother in an assassination attempt on the then President, finally won the following election and made it to the position of President of the USA. When she was a teen she was besotted with one of the Secret Service agents, JW Kelley, who worked on her mother’s protection detail. She always felt safe under his care, even though he was left thinking she blamed him for her mother’s death. His life spiralled into a deep hole, after he failed to protect Katie’s mother, ending up injured himself and held to blame for the shooting. He moved back to his small hometown and got a home off the beaten track and is pretty much drinking himself to death slowly.

When a grown up Katie turns up at his secluded home, barefoot and believing someone is trying to kill her. She was in a mental health institution, heavily drugged and supposedly suffering from anxiety and depression for years. She had accused her step-father, the now president, of killing her father all those years ago and has no real relationship with him. The President’s twin sister has been her neighbour and psychiatrist since she was five and she feels guilty for not calling her first. She hopes that JW can help keep her safe after her orderly was killed in her room and she escaped as soon as she found him, believing the killer was actually after her. It turns out she has been a pawn in a complicated and dangerous game with a very cunning killer. JW must rely on the help of his best friend Will and his sister Nichole to help him solve the mystery of Katie’s father’s death and what she thought she saw at the time. She has been mistreated and stuck in mental institutions for a large part of her later years, through no issues of her own.

Someone very clever is behind everything that has occurred to Katie and used her real family for their own plans and gains. Katie must face her demons and so will JW, as they search for the truth and get a new lease on life at long last. This is a very twisted and convoluted storyline, with lots of red herrings, leading you to think a certain person is responsible for what has happened, but you would be wrong! Very cleverly done and I look forward to reading more books by this pair of authors. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

A really good read that pulled me in from the first paragraph. The only problem I had with it, was that it was written in the third person something I am not the biggest fan of-sorry, deal breaker. If you are looking for an action packed story, this is the one for you.

Good story

A good tale with some twists and turns, which are my favorite thing. Needs editing for wrong words like "waived" instead of "waved."
