This book of prayers and affirmations by bestselling author of The Artist's Way, Julia Cameron, is full of inspiration and encouragement. Beautifully packaged, these pocket prayers are perfect for carrying around or sharing as a gift. All too often we yearn for a more spiritual life but tell ourselves it's too difficult. But the smallest prayer is heard and answered. The simplest overture meets with a loving response. Each of the prayers in this book is a starting point. Taken collectively, they offer an approach to God that is powerful as well as simple. These prayers not only allow us to reach out to God, but they allow God to reach out to us. The book is called Life Lessons because each entry is a corrective to commonly held misconceptions of the divine. Like the postures assumed in hatha yoga, they stretch us gently. Through these prayers, we learn more of ourselves and the divine.
Julia Cameron has been an active artist for more than thirty years, with fifteen books (including bestsellers The Artist's Way, Walking In This World and The Right to Write) and countless television, film, and theater scripts to her credit. She was a writer on such movies as Taxi Driver, New York, New York, and The Last Waltz. She wrote, produced, and directed the award-winning independent feature film, God's Will, which premiered at the Chicago International Film Festival, and was selected by the London Film Festival, the Munich International Film Festival, and Women in Film Festival, among others. In addition to making film, Cameron has taught film at such diverse places as Chicago Filmmakers, Northwestern University, and Columbia College. Her profound teachings on unlocking creativity and living from the creative center have inspired countless artists to unleash their full potential.
"Little one, learn from your animal companions. Practice having the open heart and unconditional love they show to you. Focus on the here and now, looking neither to the past nor to the future. Celebrate the precise moment you are in as the dog does with its glad tail. Express your appreciation for the present as the cat does with its gentle purr. Your animals have much to teach you. Humble yourself and learn."
This is a book filled with loving little quotes about love, life, and God. Anyone who believes in God that is just looking for a little motivation and inspiration should pick up this book. It would make a great coffee table book because you can flip to any page and find an inspirational quote.
I was an early fan of Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way, which has become a classic for people in pursuit of deeper and more constant creativity in their chosen art. Several of her follow up books were equally as powerful, contributing even more to the creativity conversation and often adding a more spiritual element to that conversation. However, Life Lessons doesn't quite measure up to her previous efforts. This small volume is made up of "prayers and meditations" as the subtitle suggests, but unfortunately there is a lot here that is wearily repetitious and never goes very deep. As a source of "inspiration light", I suppose this book has a place for someone who wants a quick burst of positivity in a harried moment. Yet, compared to the depth and brilliance of so many of Cameron's earlier books, this one falls quite short of that.
I had positive expectations for some thoughtful guidance on cultivating awe. At first I was put off by the inclusion of some kind of abstract audience listening to me and an unknown entity asking me questions or telling me to do something. Here’s an example:
“In the exact now you can find peace and harmony. Do not regret the past. Do not dread the future. We are with you always and in each moment you can find our grace. Bless us with your alert attention.”
This may work for some, but not for me. Then I realized, I can work with the first three phrases. The others I will set aside. If either is ok with you, you may enjoy these contemplations. Ultimately it se rely limits the book for me.
I don't know that this is a book you ever really finish reading. I have read through the prayers and meditations, but it's the kind of book that is meant to be picked up again and again. When I'm feeling lost, I read through the first sentences until I find the prayer that suits my mood. When it hits, it really hits, like tug in the gut, like you're understood.
Life lessons broken down, but lots of repetition. I could see some finding this useful, but after a while....I think this is NOT the book to read all the way through. What WOULD be great is reading one part every day - and then you can easily journal on many of the things!
Irrespective of religion, this is a good spiritual prayer book. Each page has a small prayer you can repeat, internalize, and reflect on. It is written from the perspective of a higher power who is guiding you.
