Writer Dan Abnett (AQUAMAN, TITANS) and artists Bruno Redondo (INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US) and Vicente Cifuentes (BATGIRL) bring the story of the Wonders of Earth-2 to a stunning conclusion!
The heroes of Earth-2 have lost their planet twice—first to the forces of Apokolips, and now their newly rebuilt world has fallen thanks to one of their own. To prevent the all-powerful Pandora Casket from falling into the Ultra-Humanite’s hands, the Wonder known as Fury used it herself in an attempt to recreate their original world.
Unfortunately, Fury and a small band of other Wonders have awakened in a ghost of a world…one that appears to have entirely wiped out and replaced Earth-2 and all of its survivors.
But the Wonders are not alone in this ghost world. Something is stalking them…something familiar, and powerful, and with one all-encompassing mission: to kill the Wonders before they can solve the mystery of this strange new world!
This had probably the best art, and the story was decent, right up till the end... They are just happy with this world, who cares what happened to those who did not make it???? Other than that, it was ok, but that just glared out to me enough to dramatically bring down the rating.
[Read as single issues] The final volume of Earth 2 brings the stories of the Wonders to a final close. After the Pandora Casket was activated in volume 3, the Wonders find thesmelves in a brand new world - one where Wonders aren't necessary. But there's a sinister secret behind this new world, and the Wonders wll need all their friends together for one final push to save it from itself.
Considering the sales of this series, I'm really glad that it was given so much time to allow it to wrap up nicely. The story may be a little too long, but it's nice to see that all of the characters here are given time to come to the end of their story arcs and have satisfying endings. I expect with the potential revival of the JSA in the Rebirth universe that this is the last we'll see of these characters, but Dan Abnett gives them a good send-off. The epilogue issue, #22, is especially good fun.
The art is by Vincente Cifuentes, who is really coming into his own as a penciller after mostly being an inker (as far as I'm aware, anyway), as well as Bruno Redondo, famous for his contributions to the Injustice and Injustice 2 comics. The issues that are mostly told in white space are a bit of a cop-out artistically, but given the story-reason, it does make sense.
Bye for now, Earth 2. This volume closes the book on these characters, and with six volumes of the original Earth 2 (32 issues + 2 annuals + a Futures End special), two of Earth 2: World's End (which was 24 issues), and now these four volumes (22 issues and an annual), I'd say that's a pretty good run.
I am really conflicted about this ending. Earth 2 was one of my favourite or maybe even favourite thing out of the new 52. I think the reason is it engaged me was that it was like the annihilation series from marvel and like game of thrones; risk. When you look at the dc and marvel comic books, there are so many sacred cows which even when they die, we know they are coming back. The lack of death makes the events lose impact. Earth 2 on the other hand has no need for that, heck, the trinity die at the start! The series as a whole from back when it was just earth 2 was about struggling against immeasurable odds and doing your best to save as much as you can. It was thrilling, refreshing and heroic. Which makes this send off volume so bloody weird. It could be that at the end of the day, this is another saga in which I should just look back on how I enjoyed the journey but honestly? The ending is too convenient. There are some DEEP problems with the plot. Anyone who read it probably knows what I mean and it just bugs me! I love the series so please read it and if you like it you will probably read this at some point but wth.
This is the end of the Earth-2 story started in the New 52. My guess is that DC is making way for the return of the original Justice Society, so this alternate universe story had to be concluded. Even though I enjoyed this volume, the ending did feel rushed. However, the very end of the collection was satisfying, and I enjoyed seeing the potential that existed for these heroes' future adventures. Even though it may be a while, I don't believe we've seen the last of these Wonders.
SPOILERS:
There are some implications to this story that I'm not totally comfortable with. If I understand the story correctly, Fury unleashed a force that remade the Earth, only bringing along the original versions of our main heroes. Every other human on this Earth is a brand new being with memories implanted in them. For example, even though a certain man may have only been alive for 2 days, he has a lifetime of memories and a whole history that he remembers about himself and his family. So, my question is (and this was very briefly addressed), are these people real? Are they just constructs developed by the Pandora Casket? What if one of the Wonders entered into a relationship with one of these people? Would they be obligated to confess that the entire history this person remembers is fake? I have a lot of questions about these new people, but there wasn't time for the writer to fully explore those philosophical questions.
The ending of the Earth 2 comic is uneven, amazing in spots, beautifully drawn in places, and poorly executed in others. I enjoyed it despite the flaws, and if it had to end, am happy how things worked out. And as usual, I love how badass Green Lantern is in this world. Dick as Batman fulfills the promise as well.
The reveal of the big bad at the end was done with a little subterfuge but wasn't honestly that difficult to figure out since he was the bad guy right before. But people like a little shadowy behind the scenes figure for a few pages before the dramatic reveal I guess.
They set up major risk for characters when the entire Earth 2 regular run ended with a failure to protect the original Earth and millions died. This fight to make a new planet was a great idea but difficult to use solely as a plot, and that is where this failed to be as awesome as it could have been. I hope there is more to come from the Earth 2 gang.
"THIS IS NOT THE WORLD I FOUGHT TO MAKE! THUS IS NOT THE WORLD I MADE SUCH A SACRIFICE TO BRING BACK! THE NWE WORLD STARTS HERE, AND YOUR KIND WILL NOT BE A PART OF IT!" - Fury beating Sandman's ass.
Ultrahumaite was going to open the Pandora Casket to remake a world he could rule, but Fury opened it first. Now our heroes are in a "perfect" world, or is it? Of course not! The final issue is separate from the main story and gives us a summary of and conclusion to the Earth-2 series. Dan Abnett is great, and the mostly depressing Earth-2 saga ended on a lighter note. Three and a half stars.
After Pandora's Vessel was activated, the wonders were transported to a new place of non-existence. All was not lost when they discovered something was keeping them trapped from reality. The rebirth of Earth 2 begins, this is Earth 2: Society.
Volume 4 concludes the series with a beautiful ending. We can't just hope for the society to build itself, we all need to contribute to strive for a better world.
The series fnally ends, and does so with such a left turn and resolution that almost renders everything that came before redundant and pointless.
The character development remains shallow and serviceble.
Overall, the whole of Earth 2: Society was a decent read that nevertheless, was neither memorable nor made use of the potential such a concept held. The artowrk was consistently very good throughout, though.
I was a little wary with how this would end, but it was honestly quite nice! Overall I’d probably rate the entire series a 3.5, but still a fun read if you like DC. Still really like this new Batfam they’ve made here.
After reading all 12 of the Earth-2 books, I've realised that even if a series is on sale for a quid or so, I should read the first book before buying the rest. This book tries to right the ship, but it's still mostly noise and bluster, a blousy plot about cardboard characters.
I really enjoyed this. Its not perfect, there are some holes but overall it ends in a fun place and I would love them to come back to it at some point again.
The entire Earth 2 Saga has been fantastic. To be honest the Earth 2 story is one of the few good things to come out of the New 52 era of DC. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it.
