Freed from the Australian zoo where he was the subject of forced breeding experiments, Atticus makes his way to the tufted puffin grounds in California, only to find he may not be free after all. Atty is a loner, but he doesn’t want to fight the pull of a flighty surfer who gives his inked skin a pleasant, uncontrollable itch.
Scott has the sun on his face, the waves beneath him, and gratitude for every second of life he gets to embrace. Then Atty appears, and it’s like the universe has tuned his meditation bell to the perfect frequency.
The Tiki Pro surfing competition in Florida is calling to Scott, and Atty agrees to make sure Scott gets there safely. A cross-country road trip in the Hunny Wagon seems like a perfect way to live in the present and get tantric all at the same time.
About Jacques N. Hoff My father told me all about the birds and the bees. The liar. I went steady with a woodpecker until I was twenty-one. I now travel the world in search of the hottest peckers—in tandem with my best friend Simon Spoonwell and his blue jay partner Jay Azure. What you read here is all true. Well, at least in the world of UCPeckers it is. Wherever you see peckers, you may just find me there.
About the Authors Jacques N. Hoff is the brainchild of SJD Peterson and S.A. McAuley—two authors who shouldn't be allowed to interact with each other (at least in public). It was either co-write hot pecker porn or plot world domination. It's not clear which outcome will take the forefront on any given day.
The UC Peckers world Welcome to the world of Undercover Peckers. Where love is instant the moment you find your mate. Where there’s only one true pecker for every man. Where the sex is so hot it will singe your tailfeathers. Where bird watching is both a recreation and a preoccupation—that usually leads to feathers flying. Let Simon and his avian shifter mate Jay lead you through this world of sinful and ridiculous exploration.
I seriously have too many unanswered questions that had to be set aside so I could just enjoy the story.
Atticus is a tufted puffin who apparently was hatched, not born. Want to know more? Me too!! But no. Like anything else in this series there is no explanation.
Once again, there is no world-building. We still don't know why or how they shift, why some are hatched as birds and shift to human or born human and shift to bird.
But I digress. Atty was rescued at the end of Masked Booby and finds himself in California. Immediately he meets his True Mate, Scott. Scott is a little different in that he was in a car accident about a year ago and now suffers from a type of amnesia.
Sweet, hurt brained Scott. He witnesses several times the shift from bird to human, but ultimately doesn't remember. It's like a really short avian shifter twist on 50 First Dates. Want to know more? Me too!!
I wanted to know more: about Atticus, about Scott, Scott's accident, how Scott reacts when he finally remembers Atty is a bird shifter, and I really want to know about shifting...but you never really find out anything.
I understand these books are all less than 100 pages, so the authors are definitely working on a short leash of what can be put into the story and not a lot of time to pack a lot in, but it's frustrating because I want to know more!
I want backstory, I want some history, I want to know the lore, I want more from the epilogue! I mean, come on! We're in book 4 and there really hasn't been even an iota of explanation?
Bottom line, as long as you enjoy reading a book that is mostly in the present and don't expect any real world building or back story you'll probably enjoy it.
And all my ranting aside, I did enjoy it. Really. And I'll stick with the series through at least one more with hope that I will finally get some answers.
The Peckers series is really fun. I’ve been missing them and it felt like a long wait for the next installment. The Peckers are shifter fun so you shouldn’t expect a lot of world building or paranormal politics. The novellas are character driven and stick to the relationship of the two MC’s. Let all the serious go and just enjoy the bird puns, the horniness and the HEA.
Atty was introduced previously and I was hoping the authors would give us his story. He gets sprung from his puffin breeding program prison and Irwin and Mickey are there as part of the Undercover Peckers team to help get Atty started out in his new life of freedom. Atty can’t help but appreciate a bit of the irony when he spots his mate surfing as he’s regained his freedom and almost as quickly lost it to his mate. Which, of course, he’s totally fine with because Scott is a hot surfer and the whole horny mate thing.
Scott was an absolutely adorable and charming character. He suffers from anterograde amnesia since a car accident and has trouble remembering pretty much most everything new if he isn’t exposed to it repeatedly. Think 50 First Dates Lite. It could have been rather tragic, but Scott is such a positive, happy character with an attitude to be admired so the story steered clear of the maudlin and focused on the confidence Scott carried with him.
He did have a sense of loneliness about him that led to some of the sweetest moments. Because of Scott’s memory problems, he couldn’t fully process the whole “my BF is a shifter” thing. His brain wasn’t wired to be able to hang on to the information and go through the stages that humans seem to need to go through in the shifter tales to get to acceptance. Having no ability to create new memories kind of takes the wind out of those sails, so it added and interesting twist to the shifter dynamic. Atty was all about taking care of Scott and Scott was in awe of Atty’s attention. It as pretty freakin’ cute all the way around.
The lack of shifter world building aided this story well in that Atty’s decision for his future worked. You have to read it to see how the HEA happens for them, but I like that the door is left open to revisit the characters if the authors decided to treat us readers to more Scott and Atty. I certainly wouldn’t complain. The story is complete though and there is the introduction of a couple new character for future tales. I really need to find out what happens to Billy and Chuck. Billy needs his happy and an MC chicken named Chuck has gold written all over him.

I waited for a looooooong time to get the 4th book in this hilarious series, and it felt like even longer because we were left with Atticus being rescued in book 3, and I needed to know how his story would unfold.
Atticus, or Atty, is a Puffin. They look like this:
Cute little bird, right? Check out the long blond tufts, which translate into long blond tufts when Atty is in his human form.
Poor Atticus has been kept in a zoo in Australia, in a cage, drugged for most of the time, when not supposed to be mating with a female Puffin (he adamantly refused), but fear not, rescue is underway, with help from Mickey or whatever his name du jour is, our Masked Booby, and his mate and Atty's friend, Irwin. Finally free, on the California coast, Atticus shifts to human and immediately lays eyes on Scott, surfer dude. Hello, mating bond.
I giggled a lot, as usual with these books, and Atty's need to be close to Scott was delightful. Shenanigans ensue, obviously. Someone might be following them. Could be the nasty people from the Zoo who tried to force Atty to mate with a bird, or could be someone else.
Scott, sweet surfer dude Scott, with his Honey Wagon, has a brain condition after a serious car accident, that makes him unable to remember almost everything unless he writes it down. Needless to say, the mating bond works both ways, and upon seeing Atty, Scott immediately makes a note so he remembers him.
These are novellas, so there's not a lot of world-building or explanation for anything, nor is there a long road to romance and ILYs and some hot smexing, but that's not a detriment. I love how the author gives each human/bird a specific personality that fits with the actual bird's behavior. Research was done here.
Back to Scott - the brain injury has another impact. When Scott sees Atty shift for the first time, his brain kind of shuts down, and he immediately forgets, but it seems to physically hurt him. This happens more than once, and after a few times, Atty figures out that in order to be with Scott and not hurt him, he needs to give up his love of flying like a bird. I kind of didn't like that - flying, soaring in the skies, was a huge part of Atticus, and I wish this had been handled in a different way that didn't require one of them to give up so much.
We do find out a few things about Scott though, and a few about Atty's origins as well. Some avian shifters are hatched, apparently, and some are born as humans and then shift to birds. The book doesn't delve into why that is, and I hope we'll find out more in future books.
This was a fun, snarky, and somewhat bitter-sweet insta-lovish (True Mates!) romance, with a bit of action during Atty's daring escape, and even some suspense as to who is after them. The resolution of that part of the plot - hahahaha.
I need another Peckers book, pronto!
Also, I still giggle when reading the author name. If you haven't got the joke yet... say it fast, three times. ;)

Tufted & Tatted is the fourth book in the Undercover Peckers series. This is a light, fun, easy-to-read series that doesn’t take itself too seriously and readers shouldn’t either. They are the kind of books that are great when you want something easy and quick with a bit of quirky humor, and I like them for that reason. The books each feature different couples, but the series ties together with the Undercover Peckers organization. It was founded by the MCs of the first book, Jay Walking, who were determined to help out other shifters in need. The characters appear frequently in each other’s books, but you can easily jump in without having read them all. In the case of this book, however, Atty’s actual rescue/escape from the zoo was the subject of the previous book, Masked Booby, so having read that book will give you a little context for the start of this one (though the events are recapped here).
Atty and Scott are both likable characters, Scott in particular. His amnesia leaves him having trouble remembering things that have just happened, so at times he appears slow, but it is really just a faulty memory. But he has such a positive outlook and is charming in a surfer dude kind of way. Although Atty is kind of stunned to realize his plans of being unattached have come to a quick end, he accepts Scott unconditionally and is very patient with helping him through his memory issues. There is no real relationship development here; these books are all about the instalove. As soon as Atty meets Scott, he knows Scott is his mate and then its done. Scott falls almost immediately as well, so this book is definitely more about the fun than it is about growing a relationship.
I am reviewing these out of order, but c'est la vie. Something to take into account is these are fated mates insta-love to an extreme and it's meant to be noted. They all have a light breezy tone.
Atty is a puffin trapped in a zoo where they are trying to get him to breed. For a gay puffin, ain't gonna happen. His human friend helps him escape and when he shifts on a beach, they realize Scott probably saw him. They talk to Scott and Atty knows instantly the surfer dude stoner is his mate and Scott doesn't seem to know he's a shifter. He instantly makes plans to travel with Scott from California to Florida for a surfing competition. At first they all thing Scott is just a stoned weirdo who is very out of it, but it turns out he has a brain injury that makes his short-term memory shit. He makes notes on his phone to remind him of important things, including who Atty is.
There are a few instances where Atty shifts or a chicken (yes, cluck cluck) shift in front of him and despite having told Scott about shifters, Scott is terrified each time as his memory is lost. Atty decides to never shift again to protect Scott. I thought it was absolutely romantic how Atty accepts Scott's deficiencies and goes out of his way to protect his from anything that could cause him upset and is happy to follow along with the routines that Scott needs to handle his brain injury. He doesn't get upset when he has to repeat things or Scott forgets. So all-in-all, I thought it was quite adorable and was glad Scott found Atty to help him through life.
There are a few mentions of other avian shifters, the chicken whose family was on a truck full of chicken and now seem lost, an owl who seems to be trapped in the rehab hospital Scott was in, so there may be more stories. They are definitely on the light/fun side with small drama to spice it up but nothing too overwhelming.
4.5 stars. I loved getting to know Atti. It was good to see him find his mate so quickly, but poor Scott. He reminded me a bit of Dory from Finding Nemo. I'm looking forward to seeing Billy and Chuck's stories. The only thing that I'm hoping the author rectifies Atti's 'no shifting' stance. Scott needs to know and understand all of his mate, not just the human side. Adult read
I'm going to say it. I have waited far too long for this fourth installment. There, I said it. I love ‘Peckers’ — the series, that is (of course, that's what I meant). These novellas are delightful, funny, filled with wonderful puns, and sweet, gentle, love stories. I was really hoping the author would return to Atticus whom I met in Mitch and Irwin’s book, and I just wanted Atty to find his own happy ever after.
I was a goner as soon as I met Scott. Picture Keanu Reeves with blond hair and doing the whole “righteous, dude”. Poor Scott had an accident and he suffers from anterograde amnesia so his memory isn't all that great. This works out well for Atty, Irwin, and Mickey, as Scott witnessed Atty shifting, but then couldn't remember it after a few moments. Dude! Totally! It's actually kind of sad for Scott because his phone reminds him hourly of the really important things. I can't begin to imagine how that must feel knowing you've said goodbye to hundreds of people that you can't remember and won't even if you meet them again. Sigh. Scott made my heart hurt just a wee bit.
Atty is bowled over by his gorgeous mate and more than happy to spend the rest of his life being Scott’s travel partner and wingman. Every minute he spends with the other man has him falling in love just a little bit harder. Now, how is he going to explain the shifting and mate thing? Granted, Scott is sensing some of the mate bonding, he just doesn't know what it is. I can't tell what happens with the shifter issue but I'll leave it at: Atty makes the decision that works the best for the two of them in their situation.
What a wonderful addition to the series. It was great to see some familiar faces and nice to know that UC Peckers is still going strong saving avian shifters across the world. I'm really hoping for more because now I need the answer to what is going to happen with Billy?
NOTE: This book was provided by Dreamspinner Press for the purpose of a review on Rainbow Book Reviews
Erm, I'm not exactly sure what just happened! Having read the reviews prior to starting this book (and not having read the previous three installments), I was expecting a hilarious, fun-filled and pun-filled story but at no point did I laugh ( I do have a sense of humour - honestly!). I just didn't get it.
This is a story about Atticus 'Atty', a Tufted Puffin shifter who has just managed to escape from an Australian Zoo. He takes to the skies to go and meet up with best friend Irwin and get his tracking device removed. What he doesn't anticipate is finally meeting his mate and experiencing that immediate bond and need for another person. Scott feels the draw to Atty as well but there's a couple of inconvenient details. Scott is not a shifter and he has also suffered a head injury which has left him with virtually no memory. Every day is groundhog day. Scott is an avid surfer and Atty can't help himself from joining him on his journey in his little van to competitions and just maybe the memory loss will be an advantage if Atty's secret gets out.
Their journey is going pretty much without a hitch except for the fact that Atty is convinced they are being followed. The same man, in the same car, keeps appearing and they’ve seen him in different states as they cross America so it can’t just be a coincidence. Is someone from the Zoo still keeping tabs on Atty or is it someone else entirely?
This story just didn’t work for me. I found the characters irritating, the storyline was a bit ‘meh’. Scott’s amnesia was repetitive and the whole shifting into a giant bird was a bit too far-fetched for even my nonsense filled mind. Clearly lots of people have enjoyed and laughed at this book but I just didn’t find it funny.
