This collection was everything that I needed right now. After reading the Spell Weaver prequel series and rereading the Steel & Stone series back to back I yearned for more. I think that I will always ache for more of these characters in my heart. There are many book series that I have been passionate about, but this is one of the only series that I have read that has absolutely obliterated me emotionally for so long after finishing. I remember weeping for an hour or more directly after finishing the series that first time and the second time was no different. I had purchased this companion collection of stories when it was first released and I waited to read it until I could devote the time to reread the series. I should have reread it sooner. There have been few books or book series that I have read and immediately wanted to re-immerse myself in afterward. This series is so special.

Reading things from Ash and Lyre's point of view was everything I could have hoped for and expected. It made me feel everything in the series with much more intensity. It almost makes me wonder what the entire series would have been like if it had been narrated from different points of view. I liked that there is an extended scene from the last book in the series that gives a little more closure. I also liked how these stories pull from the books in the series, but they are not retellings of what happened. There are scenes that show what some of the other characters were going through that I couldn't have anticipated. They shed so much more insight into the minds of these characters and they really strengthen them.

If you are a fan of the Steel & Stone series and you haven't read this then you definitely should. I personally am not a fan of short stories usually, but I knew that I would be reading this. I will read anything that Annette Marie writes. I would urge you to try this companion collection even if short stories aren't your thing because otherwise, you will undoubtedly be missing out. Reading this has only amplified and deepened my love for this incredible world. I simply cannot wait for the release of the sequel series, Blackfire!

This collection of short stories was everything I didn't know I needed 💕

❤️Ash and Lyre
❤️Ash's initial reaction to Piper
❤️Lyre's behind the scenes weaving
❤️Lyre's past and who is this mysterious woman??
❤️An unfiltered glimpse into Ash's mind during....scenes
❤️SO MUCH ZWI YES❤️

So now as I fall into the depths of a book hangover, I will cling to the hope that the prequel and sequel series are actually happening because this world and these characters have become very near and dear to me, and I never want to leave 💕

Review:
Often times companion novels that give you a glimpse into a non-POV character's POV end up being a disappointment for me. But this? This was great! It had been over a year and a half since I finished the series, but I was able to sink right back into it, reliving the scenes without any problem (though it probably helped that I read the summaries I have of all the books before reading this).

And Ash's and Lyre's POVs were so interesting! Not only was it cool getting to see their thoughts, there were also little bits of information about them and sometimes things going on that Piper didn't know about. Lyre especially is just... wow. He's so interesting and skilled and intense. I loved his POV the best, and I loved seeing him in action in the fight/battle scenes, and I'm normally not a big fan of fight scenes. But I loved his emotional moments too.

I also loved getting to see Ash and Lyre's friendship more. They were, apparently, always so much more in tune with each other than I realized. Like, they were always exchanging glances and sensing things about each other and working together. They knew each other, probably more than anyone else did, and were loyal to each other.

This book also brought home the point that the daemons aren't human. Lyre and Ash kept trying to explain that to Piper, but I can understand why she didn't understand that since apparently I didn't either. Actually experiencing the shading, the instinct, the animalistic rage, the possessiveness, etc. from the POVs of Ash and Lyre was entirely different from just seeing them shade from Piper's POV. It was interesting. Also interesting was getting to know more about the real Ash and Lyre---the sides of themselves they didn't readily show to Piper. Like, even when not shaded, those two are fucking deadly.

And of course I loved the stuff about Zwi, haha. I never really thought about what the dragonets might be like when they communicated with the Draconians, and it was adorable/hilarious. Zwi is the best. I love how much Ash loves her and she him.

There was other funny stuff too, *SPOILER* *END SPOILER*

This book also made me sad though. *SPOILER* *END SPOILER* This isn't a complaint about the book/series though---it's realistic, I don't think everything in books needs to be happy, and the fact that I feel for a character this much means he was well-written.

So overall this was fun, funny, interesting, emotional, and absolutely worthwhile addition to the series!

Recommended For:
Fans of Books 1-5 in Annette Marie's Steel & Stone series. Anyone who likes action-packed, YA urban fantasy with kickass heroines with equally kickass supernatural creatures by her side.

This was so good! It actually added a lot more insight into Lyre and Ash and the series than I thought it would.

Steel and Stone Companion Collection

This was a fantastic set of short stories from the perspective of Ash and Lyre. It was nice to be able to get a glimpse into their thoughts and feelings. I enjoyed that there was also some new material as well that was never seen before and I really can’t wait for all these characters to get back together again!

I admit that it was hard to rate this. This collection of bonus chapters included alternate perspectives of moments from the previous books as well as some new scenes. Even though having the male leads serve as the narrators (instead of Piper) was something different, this didn't offer enough new information that might change my opinion as whole.

I preferred Lyre's chapters slightly more as they did provide new insights into his character and background which had been lacking during the earlier books. There were also hints at past events and future developments which would allow the author to further expand on this world. In some ways, I was more curious about those aspects than anything else.

Personally, I think that anyone interested in these stories should read them soon after the corresponding sections or books. I waited until the end to read all of these and by that point, I had already forgotten many of the earlier events that led up to these "snapshots" which meant that the significance of any additional knowledge was lost on me.

For more enthusiastic fans of the series, this would be a somewhat bittersweet and final glimpse into the world of Steel & Stone.

One word....okay a few words, I'm speechless at this book. I love it. I love the parts with Lyre and Ash through I'm waiting for the whole series of books to be placed in Ash's and Lyre's point of view for each and every book. It's was amazing world to revisit too. This book has many scenes with Lyre's and Ash's, both male characters were well written and I do hope we will see them again with Piper on a new adventure.

Maybe in the new series that will be coming out in October of this year.

I'm not one for reading an already completed story from a different POV but oh this was simply delightful. Some chapters truly deserved Ash and Lyre's points of view and some of the missing scenes shed a new light on some events.

It really only made me want to read The Spell Weaver trilogy even more, dammit...

Ok so this review assumes that you've read the entire steel and stone series- so don't read further unless you have because I'm only tagging spoilers for the companion collection!

OK! So this isn't at all what I expected. Part of me wondered if I should even bother buying since I expected it would be a short little novella with the same scenes for the books except in Ash and Lyre's perspective. But alas, my craving for Ash and Piper (and let's not forget Lyre) was too strong- and I'm soooo glad it was because WOW. Don't get me wrong- there's still a couple familiar scenes in there but the perspective makes it totally new to me in all these cases. I always forget that a first person perspective means you'll miss parts of the story. I mean, aren't you wanting to know what Ash thought of Piper when they first meet? Yes, I thought so! ;-)

The brilliance of this is four-fold.
1. Ash is so reserved sometimes, that in the series you can't always tell what he's thinking. Seeing things from his perspective let's you delve even deeper into Ash's character- both good and bad. I was always surprised he was so sweet with Piper from the beginning when he was raised under Samael's thumb, BUT you see that sharp edge of his character in the first story and it made more sense. Also, the series never really imparted Ash's general lack of experience with women... it was kinda cute to see that aspect.
1.5- Zwi made me smile alot during the series and I enjoyed seeing more of her and ash's convos
2. The majority of the stories took place when they were away from Piper and I got to see things that Piper had no clue about- for instance, Lyre's spell weaving and past pops up several times etc. Also loved seeing the dynamic in Ash and Lyre's relationship (pre-Piper).
3. The author sets up the spell weaver series. You find out things about Lyre that made me very excited to read the first book in his series
4. I had mixed feelings about the original ending of the series- felt like the author left things really uncertain BUT reading Ash's perspective completely changed my mind almost so I wish she had put that in Unleash the Storm.

I'm just addicted to this series and will always want more from Piper, Ash, and Lyre. I liked the insight we get into Ash and Lyre's history - their friendship, their families, their pasts in Asphodel. I alwasys love seeing Zwi, and I thought it was cool to see how her bond with Ash works. Seeing Lyre's spell weaving being showcased was a nice nod to what I know will be highlighted futher in the Spell Weaver series. I'm even more excited to read the sequel series when it gets here!

The Audio Book:

I've never re-read a book in such a short period of time, but this one deserved it. This audio book made it a whole new experience. Though I'm not very fond of male narrators I learned to appreciate this narrator for this novel in particular. His voice wasn't too deep to the point where every female voice sounded like a high pitched imitation. His male voices were great, but he doesn't seem to have much range in those either. He was great for these short stories because there weren't all that many characters to voice. It was mostly internal monologues for different parts of the original book in another character's POV. Overall, this narrator was great for this novel.

This companion novel made the series that much better! I loved every single story, but Lyre has found a special place in my heart. I enjoyed seeing the same situations from a perspective that wasn't Piper. I like Piper, but being in Lyre or Ash's head is much more interesting considering they've been alive for centuries (it seems) and are much more knowledgeable in everything than Piper is.

If you couldn't tell by now, I adored being in Lyre's head. Annette Marie did this character justice with her writing and I'm so happy for that! Lyre proved to be just as secretive and intriguing as I was expecting him to be. I'm officially hyped for his prequel series.

Looking from Piper's eyes I assumed Ash would have complicated and tumultuous thoughts. From the stories from his point of view, he came off as nonchalant. It almost felt like a calm before the storm. It was interesting but not as interesting as Lyre.

Overall this was a collection of interesting stories and makes an amazing companion to the original series. These stories gave me a much better understanding of Ash and Lyre which would make re-reading the Steel & Stone Series that much more fascinating.

My Favorite Quotes:

"Once, Ash had called Lyre an angel of death. Tonight, he would do the name justice. "

"Incubi are lover's, but no woman's true love."

"The past lies in rest, its ghosts long slumbering, and I would not disturb them. Let us begin again."

Everyone who knows me knows how big of a fan I am of Annette Marie's books. So I don't think it would come as a surprise to say that I absolutely loved this collection!!

Returning to this world and reading from Ash and Lyre's perspectives was an absolute thrill! I did not know it was possible to love these two even more than I already do but I do! And Zwi! Man I love that dragonet to pieces! She's so maddeningly adorable!

And btw. Thank you so much Annette Marie for breaking my heart for the second time. Because that ending made my heart all melty and swoony and left my heart in pieces. Again.

I seriously would legit stalk the author's website and social media 'til the next book in the Steel and Stone series comes out. And probably re-read the first five books while I'm at it. My obsession over these books is so strong it's not even funny.

This series is an absolute must-read!

Adds so much!

This book is the companion novel to the Steel and Stone series. I highly recommend reading the series before purchasing this because you won't have any idea what's going on!

I did a re-read of S&S with the companion along side all 5 books. It added so much to the story simply by getting Ash and Lyre's POV. There were scenes that were revisited, but also new ones where it would be impossible to know what happened unless you get the telling from one of the guys. The absolute best part, for me, was the ending retold from Ash. The original was bittersweet. I needed some extra reassurances that Piper and Ash got their HEA, and this ending made me a believer. Loved it! Can't wait for their next adventure!

Great series addition!

I loved the Steel and Stone books but the ending of 5 left me needing more information. Like are Piper and Ash going to be together is he going to have kids with someone else? Gag! I liked seeing into the minds of Ash and Lyre and getting a better image of the ending that Ash doesn't want anyone else and still plans on being with just Piper. I hate using my imagination and being left hanging. I need another book with Piper coming back to be with Ash or Ash leaving to be with Piper and someone else taking over the Draconians please. Lyres book should be good hopefully it will have some information on Ash and Piper also.

The five books from Ash and Lyres point of view. The best scenes looked at again from our boys view is glorious! Reading this again and again makes me really happy. I mean really, really happy! When I want to re-visit this world but I don't have time to read the whole series, I read this book.

First thoughts: Great addition to series. Lyre is just amazing.

Review: This book does not add anything really new to the Steel & Stone story, however it provide Lyre's and Ash's perspective at certain moments during the previous books. At first it was a bit odd reading something that happened in book one, and why would I care, but then I got into the groove of things and it was wonderful.

We get to see how truly broken both Ash and Lyre. We also get to see certain moments through Ash's perspective, and wow, so good!

If you are a fan of the Steel & Stone world, this is a nice addition that provides a nice little hook into potentially new series in the world.

retelling of the whole series through Lyre & Ash’s POV

this was good, i actually prefer the boys POV over Piper’s

and also a more detailed and clearer ending

I’m so happy to know that Piper will be back to be with Ash
and this is their HEA

now all we need is for Lyre to find “the one that got away”
which it seems he’s on a mission to do so

My love for this series, with it's wonderful characters, imaginative and unique world building and kick ass story lines knows no bounds. By far and away one of my favourite authors now, Annette Marie has never ever failed to disappoint me, and now with a companion series with the POV of Ash And Lyre for a number of key scenes from throughout the entire Steel and Stone series? It's like my Christmas and birthday arrived at once!

Funny, heart warming, heart breaking and intense, all words I could use to describe the events in this book. Somehow the author had a feel for what we the readers must have wanted and all my favourite scenes are included. Getting inside the head of Ash and Lyre in these moments was a real treat. If you haven't read the series don't read this first, get straight out there and read all 5 Steel and Stone books, then come back and read this because you are in for the biggest treat ever. Absolutely fantastic, I practically inhaled this book, I'd give it 10 stars if I could.

To say I devoured this book in one sitting would be too little.
I inhaled it like oxygen, I drank it like the last drop of water in the desert heat.
I read the hell out of it.
Ash and Lyre, this is a completely fatal combination.
I thought I had my fill, at least for now, of this story after reading Lyre's first book in the Spell Weaver series, but nope. This is proof that I will never ever tire. This series is one of the best I've ever read, if not the best.
And if the wonderful author decides to give us more then God forbid for me to not read it.
If she decided for example to give us all the books from the guy's POV then I will be on them like flies on honey. Not even kidding.
And what did me in was the last chapter from Ash's POV, I needed that. I so so so needed that chapter to continue and give a slight input into the future. I am now completely destroyed. And I want to re-read all the books. I feel like this adventure should not end, ever.

A neat supplemental addition

This is a nice collection of shorts from both ash and lyre perspectives. Each short is how they perceived a particular scene or scenes in the steel and stone novels. 1 or 2 of them had almost exact scenes and words but w a personal thought thrown in and so those aren't the best but the others were good because they showed scenes that weren't in the original books. Basically what they were doing when they were off on their own or what a scene looked like from their perspective while piper was lost to the stone or otherwise incapacitated or on another world. It's just a cool view. I would have preferred to have had these before I read the original books so that I could then immediately read each scene after the original scene, like a supplement.

Just what this series needed

I could read from Ash's point of view all day. I liked seeing his bond with Zwi and his thoughts about Piper through his eyes. I really loved seeing how he saw Piper's daemon glamour for the first time. His version of the ending of the Steel & Stone saga gave me a bit more closure and will hopefully be enough to tide me over until the sequel comes out. Since I haven't read the Spell Weaver books yet, Lyre's point of view was rather interesting. I could tell there was more to him than meets the eye and even more that he won't let anyone see. His friendship and devotion to both Ash and Piper is truly remarkable. Definitely worth the read.

Everything that I loved about the first series I that I read from the author rewritten so beautifully that I got all of the feels. I'm reading this companion novel almost 2 years after I finished Unleash the Storm and all the love, adventure, and bittersweet heartbreak came rushing back.
