Psssst... Don't be fooled by the pretty purple cover. This isn't exactly a "happy" story.
What is it, then?
It's a story about six friends and the night that changed their lives forever. It's the foundation for tales of hurt, tales of revenge, and tales of love. Oh yeah, there are some bad-ass women with super powers, too. But all heroes have to start somewhere, right?
This is the origin story of the League of Lesbians.
Em Stevens was shortlisted for most likely to succeed. She’s a best-selling author of queer fiction. When she isn’t writing she enjoys all that NC has to offer, from mountains to the sea, wine and distilleries. Em and company, including two furry friends, reside in Raleigh.
I feel like I’m the only one who didn’t love this. I’m a big superhero fan. I mean when I was little and all my friends were playing with Barbie’s, I was playing with my little action figures of Wonder Woman, Green Arrow, Captain America, etc. Add to the fact all the superheroes in this short story are lesbians, I thought this would be perfect for me. I have to admit I’m a bit disappointed and am not sure if I will continue on with this series or not.
This is about a group of six friends that suddenly gain super powers. I can’t say much more than that, since this is a short story it would be too spoilerish. I guess the biggest issue for me is with such a large cast and under 100 pages, you don’t get enough of time to connect to the characters. There were two characters I liked, two that I could pick out of a lineup if I had to, the other two I can’t even remember. I’m such a character driven reader that two out of six characters is not good enough odds for me.
I’m not even sure if I like or care enough about where the storyline is headed. It did get a little more interesting towards the end, but it ended so fast I don’t feel like I got enough out of it.
What is good about this is it is free with Kindle Unlimited, so I don’t regret trying this. I can’t recommend this, but I seem to be an outlier here. I suggest reading some of the other reviews before you make up your mind. Everyone else seems to love this short.
Oh, this is good! And it's going to get better because there will be a whole slew of these books (or so the author promises us in the back of the book) :-) My first Em Stevens and certainly not my last, she has a great writing style.
League of Lesbians: Origins: A Lesbian Superhero Story is a long title for a short story, but it lays the foundation for what will happen in future stories. 6 Friends form the Femi Nacho Book Club and meet once a month at the Burnt Bean Coffee Shop. When their usual room has been double booked by accident some unknown woman offers up her place instead and the evening seems saved. Only when they wake up the next morning with no memories of the night before they realise things are realy, really wrong.
f/f no sex Themes: book club, super powers, heroes and villains in the making, type A personality, memory gap, life as you know it is over, press-ganged, adventure and drama ahead 4.8 stars
Like this one. Looks like it's the first of many planned. She describes it like it's an episode of 'Heroes'. So that's kinda cool. Quite a few lesfic superhero books out lately. Kinda digging it.
“League of Lesbians: Origins: A Lesbian Superhero Story” is an interesting beginning to what may turn out to be an excellent series of short stories. Lesbians, check; superpowers, check; hero(s)….hmmm…not so much, so far.
Six girls are drugged and forced into super powered lives. If the drug had not worked, they’d have been killed…since it did work, they will go insane without obeying the supervillainess who transformed them and getting regular doses of an insanity antidote. This part of the book has a very creepy vibe, and many of the six girls (four of them, I think), are disturbingly ok with going along with the supervillainess.
Where the story works for me is the character of Wren. While far from perfect (she likes being in control of her group, and quickly gets jealous if someone else leads for even a moment), she is the easiest to identify with of everyone in the book - perhaps because it’s told from her POV, of course! Angela also is likable, and together they may yet help their group of friends learn to control their powers without becoming supervillainesses themselves.
“League” is a promising start, and there are hints of significant drama to come. In the author’s note, Em Stevens says that not all the characters will be heroines, and that much of her (and co-author Jea Hawkins) inspiration is from “…our own delight in twisted human nature.” 4* for “League”, and I look forward to future episodes of the series!
This is a great short read and the beginning to what I hope to be a great series. Six book club friends find themselves in a predicament and a gorgeous woman helps them out but does she really??? Makes you wonder (i think she did it) if she caused the predicament to occur. Can't really give much away because it is a short read and any detail is big. But i see betrayal in the future as well as a budding romance...maybe more than one. Read it, especially if you like superheroes and the sort
I worried about not liking this when I started. (I tend to prefer my superheroes in comics or in tv shows/movies. I don’t know why.) But I grew to love it as I read on! Now I can’t wait to clear my reading list a bit and then fit in book two! Two thumbs up.
This is the origin story of six friends who make up a lesbian book club. They go to club, their usual room is occupied by a business meeting, and they need a place to meet. A stunning women in red shoes, a women none of the book club has ever met, offers her house as a place for their meeting. So of course, these worldly lesbians say yes, to a women they have never met (they are not very good role models). As they should have expect, they were drugged, and use in a genetics experiment, woke up with strange powers.
This story was very short and could have been included in the first full story. The characters are good but, so far, are underdeveloped. I’m goin to read them all.
I really enjoyed the story. I love how all of the women were turned into superheroes or Supervillains and I can't wait to see where the series goes in the next book.
Book Club is just supposed to be about books right? Then how come these six readers wake up after book club talking about something other than books?
Wren leads a monthly Book Club of six women (including her). They meet every month at a coffee shop central for everybody when one month they arrive to find that their meeting room has been rented to someone else. Frustrated and angry the ladies get ready to leave when a sexy lady in red heels steps in to save the day. Gale is house-sitting for her boss and is bored, lonely, and would love the company. The ladies after some debate take Gale up on her offer and soon they are getting in Gale’s van and driving off to a gorgeous house in a suburban neighborhood. Gale starts pouring drinks, everyone is chatting about the book, and soon everyone is feeling the effects of the drinks. The next morning everyone wakes up in their own beds with no memory of the night before, but feeling slightly different.
I have to confess that I bought this book because of the cover without even reading the blurb (laugh). I just loved the cover and thought it was unique and anybody who picked such a unique cover had to have a story that was just as unique and I was right. Authors Em Stevens and Jea Hawkins and the League of Lesbians: Origins is the superhero book I have been waiting for, though the authors state that not every character is going to be a hero (hmmmmm). I interacted with the authors on Twitter and Hawkins credits Stevens for picking out the cover and it worked because I bought it. The story dragged me in and I already have my favorites and once I read that not everyone is going to be a hero - my heart stopped. I think we need to make a fan club, a board to talk about theories...and I am geeking out. The authors did what writers do best, they made me care about the characters and want to continue on their journey with them. I cannot wait for the next book (which I already bought as I got them both at the same time (laugh)). I hope you join me on this adventure and geek out with me, because this looks like a fun ride - I hope they make t-shirts because I so want to be heroine in the League of Lesbians. Just saying (hint).
