Barón F. de la Motte Fouqué
El barón Friedrich De la Motte Fouqué (1777-1843), noble caballero, soldado y escritor, colaboró con su amigo el escritor romántico E.T.A. Hoffmann en los dos tomos de “Cuentos para niños”, que publicaron en 1916 y 1917. El autor de “Los enanitos”, cuento publicado en esta colección, escribe para los niños un cuento de imágenes ilusorias: “La caja mágica”.

Friedrich Heinrich Karl de la Motte, Baron Fouqué was a German writer of the romantic style.
He was born at Brandenburg an der Havel, of a family of French Huguenot origin, as evidenced in his family name. His grandfather, Heinrich August de la Motte Fouqué, had been one of Frederick the Great's generals and his father was a Prussian officer. Although not originally intended for a military career, Friedrich de la Motte Fouqué ultimately gave up his university studies at Halle to join the army, and he took part in the Rhine campaign of 1794. The rest of his life was devoted mainly to literary pursuits. He was introduced to August Wilhelm Schlegel, who deeply influenced him as a poet (mich gelehret Maß und Regel | Meister August Wilhelm Schlegel) and who published Fouqué's first book, Dramatische Spiele von Pellegrin, in 1804.
Fouqué's first marriage was unhappy and soon ended in divorce. His second wife, Caroline Philippine von Briest (1773-1831), enjoyed some reputation as a novelist in her day. After her death Fouqué married a third time. Some consolation for the ebbing tide of popular favour was afforded him by the munificence of Frederick William IV of Prussia, who granted him a pension which allowed him to spend his later years in comfort. He died in Berlin in 1843.

Odd mix of the Gothic and Medieval Romance, the Magic Ring starts out as a contest between two knights for a magic ring which takes its hero all over Europe. Its based on the same legend that was an inspiration for Tolkien's Lord of the Rings saga and it is interesting to see characters and situation that parallel those in Tolkien's novel. The characters tend to be two dimensional and there are so many twists at the end that I almost laughed.
A great mixture of Gothic and epic fantasy, I really loved it. A very fascinating book to read, with some very original and attractive Gothic settings which are totally different from the ordinary ones of the classic Gothic novels. It doesn´t have the dramatic intensity of The Lord of the Rings, but it is a very good novel, indeed.

The Magic Ring is an entertaining fantasy novel with the flavor of a noble knight’s fairy tale, featuring a variety of colorful short stories and diverse events. About four-fifths of the book is truly captivating and enjoyable. However, towards the end, the story places too much emphasis on religious themes, and Motte Fouqué’s attempt to tie everything together feels a bit excessive, which weakens the overall reading experience. Additionally, the story becomes quite predictable and lengthy.
Still, reading a book that inspired The Lord of the Rings and has a smooth narrative makes it a worthwhile stop, especially for readers interested in the history of fantasy literature.

A story about Sir Otto von Trautwangen. It isn't really about the ring though the ring turns up occasionally. It's more of a series of little episodes in which these cartoon characters behave as chivalrous knights, quick to take great offense and just as quick to lapse into subservience out of overoverwrought remorse. It had some interesting events, the cavern in the forest Hartz, ruled over by Gerda who hopes to take on the Norse god Freia's mantle, where the flowers were flames eaten by the magical horses and deer. I was wondering if this is really the book by Motte Fouque called The Hero of the North, which I can't find. This could have been good but the characters were so flat and never went anywhere. Having said that though there were scenes here that would fit in, or actually showed up in, Star Wars. So it's maybe a good compendium of hero motifs?
One of the most boring knightly tales I’ve come across. At first I suspected the translation might've been the issue, but the story elements would suggest not. There’s nothing but just joust after joust after joust for one ring that, for all it’s said to be “magical,” it doesn’t do one bedamned thing. Maybe the “magic” is the possession of a lot of money, since it means whoever possesses it will be the owner of the Montfaucon wealth.
I already *have* an autographed copy of this book from Amy Sturgis, who edited this lovely edition and whom I highly recommend. I just haven't read the book yet! I will, though, Amy! (So many books; so little time!)
