Witch Cozy Mystery Eight Book Set By: Amelia Morgan Narrated by: Lainie Pahos This is an audible book set I requested and the review is voluntary. Each of these books are very clever and have great characters, good plots, wonderful clues and suspects. I am a horrible detective and always guess wrong. My favorite character is the main gal's cat who has her grandmother's soul in it. So the cat can talk and is a bit sassy. The narrator has a very pretty voice but several times she repeated the sentences and started over. Other than that, she was awesome.
Not the worst, but it's nothing special for the cozy mystery genre. I'm not totally sure why Meg runs a donut shop since she never seems to work in it. The witch status also seems pretty unnecessary as well. She does use it but so sparingly that I forgot it was even a character trait for most of the series except for the one seance. And she's not even the best detective. Most of her success is due to constantly badgering the suspects, purposefully aggravating them until they are almost to the point of throwing fists, and some sort of epiphany she gets from her cat-grandmother. My biggest issue is how similar the books are to each other. Some of the dialogue is recycled, most notably how all of the killers "have a mental breakdown" and spill all the details of their crime. Honestly, I'm so glad I'm done with this series. If I hadn't been given a copy in exchange for a review I would have abandoned the series after book two. The plots are so similar that it's not even fun. The character are aggressive and bullies who essentially trick the suspects into talking to them.
Lainie Pahos does a great job narrating.
**I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.**
This narrator has a pleasant voice and delivery making these stories an enjoyable listen.
Bk 1: The witches of enchanted bay Enchanted doughnuts is the shop we all wish for, doughnuts enchanted with magic to make them low calorie and healthy! If you’re going to play the sluth then having magic at your disposal is a bonus but then why wouldn’t you just cast a spell to make people tell the truth? There’s is a repeated line that really should have been picked up in editing.
Bk 2: Ax to grind Connor and Meg are a likeable couple, unfortunately this book is almost exactly the same as the first book, word for word in places. Again as in book 1 there is a repeated line that should have been picked up in editing.
Bk 3: killer twist Meg is investigating the death of a friend who’s tell all book is going to ruffle the feathers of a rich family. This is a better story than the first two, there are less of the word for word repeats that are in books 1 & 2. This story has two repeated lines that should have been picked up in editing.
Bk 4: A bewitching murder This was an enjoyable story but unfortunately editing let it down. The end of Chapter 8 cuts off just as a sentence starts then goes straight to chapter 9, there was also two repeated lines, was this audio not listened to/edited before it was released?
Bk 5: A riddle of a murder This is a nice and enjoyable story but again there are two repeated lines that editing should have picked up.
Bk 6: The nuts and bolts of murder There appears to be some dialogue missing. They go to confront the killer and the next chapter starts with the suspect pointing at his name tag saying it couldn’t be his they found but Meg and Conner hadn’t mentioned finding a name tag.
Bk 7: strangling ambition This is an enjoyable story but again the editing lets it down this one had three Repeated lines
Bk 8: Therapy can be murder These cozy mysteries would be much more entertaining if they weren’t exactly the same as each other. As with the first seven in this series this book needs editing, there are two Repeated lines in this one.
I wish I liked these books more. I mean, I paid 99 cents for the 8-book set. I pretty much like Meg and Connor and Meg's Mom, Beth. I like the idea that Meg and Beth are secretly witches with magical powers to perform spells. I even like the idea that Meg is an "amateur sleuth."
My problem is with the way the stories are told. They are pretty much cookie-cutter, different settings, different victims, but the plots all move in the same direction, with the same problematic suspects, and the same "moment-of-truth" that solves the mystery of who killed the victim. That said -- oh yeah, that's another of my pet peeves. The author, Amelia Morgan, uses cliches like "that said" so often that it gets funny, then tiring. Other cliches: Don't leave town. You say that but you can't prove it.
These stories seem to be written by a beginning author who didn't finish the editing and proofreading before going live with them. They might appeal to a pre-teen 11-13 year old audience who don't expect excellent writing. But they probably have more than the 99 cents I had to part with to get the set. Sorry, Ameila.
Overall: 4 stars The Witches of Enchanted Bay: 4 stars The Ax to Grind: 3 stars Killer Twist: 3 stars A Bewitching Murder: 4 stars A Riddle of a Murder: 5 stars The Nuts and Bolts of Murder: 5 stars Strangling Ambition: 4 stars Therapy Can Be Murder: 5 stars
A good collection overall. The series started a bit repetitive but soon broke out of that pattern. As I recall, in the beginning, Conner was returning to Enchanted Bay as a detective. He and Meg had been an item years earlier before he left to be a cop in a bigger city. Even though she was the manager of a donut shop, her investigation of the death of a friend initially irked him. Throughout the series, she continues to investigate murders. Sometimes without him, but most of the time together. While murder and the subsequent investigation are tragedies, the series has a positive side as well.
kindle unlimited, each book currently on sale for 99 cents AND to make it weirder the 8 book set is on sale for 99 cents, the BEST {when in great reading mood} is 3 stars, each book has so much chick 90210 angst in it plus implausible {yeah, NOT talking about the witch stuff, just other} that it's not believable or stand-able, plus so many issues with typos etc that it's even MORE unreadable AND there are also various 'sets' that include various books in to different partial sets of the 8 and they may or may not be 99 cents as well, didn't bother to look

It features Meg Walton a witch who is the owner of a business called Enchanted Donuts. She finds herself involve in a rash of murders as she comes to aid her soon to be officer boyfriend when her small town becomes a hot spot of murder.
Welcome to Enchanted Bay where bodies keep ending up dead. An enjoyable mystery series.
Audible:I liked this set.Meg is a witch who doesn't seem to want to use her powersHer boyfriend is a cop.She runs a donut shop, which is great for her boyfriend.Meg has a lot of friends and acquaintences that die in mysterious ways and she has to be the one to figure out what happened. She goes through 8 books questioning and badgaring people until she gets an answer. It is a good series if you like the cozy mystery type of story. Lainie Pohos starts out as a fair narrator in book one but does get better through the series. There are some spots of repetition. I was given this book by the narrator, author or publisher free for an honest review.
Witch Cozy Mystery Eight Book Set by Amelia Morgan was a great box set. This set consists of the first eight books in The Witches of Enchanted Bay series; Witches of Enchanted Bay, Ax To Grind, Killer Twist, A Bewitching Murder, The Nuts and Bolts of Murder, A Riddle of a Murder, Strangling Ambition and Therapy Can Be Murder. This series follows Meg and her boyfriend Connor investigating many murders in the small town of Enchanted Bay. I loved this series and can't wait to read more by Amelia Morgan.
Eight book cozy mystery set, all could be stand alone books. Each has a main character but all are different stories and endings. Meg owns a donut shop. She is an amateur sleuth/witch. The characters are believable and interesting. Grandma Penelope's soul has been transferred into a cat so the cat talks. There are many funny parts, some simple romance, some paranormal. I recommend these books as they are clean, no frank sex, gore or foul language. These are great for family time or for your teens.
Having read them in abbreviated format and back to back. I felt like the first 3 Stories were a lot of copy and paste. I feel like the entire town is single or both people in the couple are involved enough to not be trusted. There were some definite editing issues as well. In one story the time of death was 12-1 but the detectives spent the rest of the story asking for alibis for 11-12. Over looking those the stories are great easy summer reading.
If you like a little mystery, a little romance and a little paranormal all thrown together then this is the box set for you. I sure enjoyed it but what's not to love about a smart funny heroine and a good looking smart cop working together to solve murders. Throw in her crazy family and it's a recipe for a great collection of cozies.
Meg and Connor make a good team solving murder in Enchanted Bay. Meg is a witch as her mother and her grandmother but nobody knows because their are afraid they will be in trouble. But it comes handy in order to help Meg solve some murders taking place in their town with the help of his boyfriend Connor, detective in Enchanted Bay police. Entertaining audiobook
I only got through the first two books. When a bakery store owner is smarter that the police detective, the story becomes weak. The killers in both books were caught in almost identical ways. With her detective boyfriend hiding. The talking cat was useless and weird. There were other things I had issue with but won’t describe. It has been a long time since a cozy mystery series disappointed me.
