My English review

I did not know the author and I was intrigued to discover this novel! I liked the idea of the two broken characters and I was curious to discover them.

Each of our two characters had to go through a lot of hardships, but as they try to rebuild themselves, they have to deal with a lot of problems that could make them dive again.

I liked the ideas and the characters with their weaknesses, however, I did not manage to really go into the story … I hesitated to stop the novel, but I was curious to see how the story was going to end. It was an interesting reading in general, but it was not for me. I did not have managed to hang on to this novel.

Peyton is finally feeling inspired. She's finally managed to get herself out of the home that was a prison. A prison where her family lived last and where Peyton feels as if she should have perished, too. When she stops in the town that has inspired her, she's met with a grumpy, fierce inn owner, Ford. She's finally managed to get to a point where not all men scare her any longer, but there's something about the big, muscular Ford, with his commanding presence, that unsettles her. But luckily for her, he recognizes a fellow broken soul when he sees one, so when she witnesses a murder, he believes her, unlike everyone else in the town she just may settle in, if she can survive the terrorizing the killer plans on putting her through.

Ford is a broken man. He left the Marines under a cloud, and he knows this little town has its doubts about him. But he does what needs to be done, runs his inn without bothering anyone. And then the beautiful, but skittish Peyton invades his inn and his life, and suddenly he has a mission again - this time, to protect her from the killer no one else seems to believe exists. If he manages to seduce her into his bed a few times while protecting her, even better.

I loved Traitor! There's nothing better than two damaged souls coming together and healing each other, healing themselves while falling in love. Peyton is such a strong character, determined as hell to finally be free of her past. And when she finds Ford, I knew from their very first meeting that she'd bring him to his knees, and she did. As gently as possible, but he fell hard, and it was pretty amazing to read. And the mystery? On point! I never had a clue at all who the real villain was. Well done, Nicole Blanchard! Well done on the mystery. Well done on the entire story because it's the kind of romantic suspense I love best - fast paced, intriguing, layered, likable characters, and smokin' hot chemistry. I can't wait to read Cal's story next, Operator!

Peyton was trying to learn how to step back out into the world and find her own way after the tragic events in her life it was hard. She finds herself in Windy Point and she finds the best place to stay while she is in town. She finds the beautiful lodge and stays for a week she meets Ford who is the owner and retired Marine accused of murder but never charged yet was discharged and some people didn't like him because of it even though they didn't know all the circumstances. He only wanted to be left alone and run the lodge but it was something about Peyton in her designer clothes and paint on her wrist that attracted him. On top of that his sister shows up with her 13 year old daughter and wants to stay at the lodge also he just can't catch a break. Then a couple of days later he is asked to check on her by an Nell his employee and he walks to the dock and finds Peyton face down in the water he revives her and she tells him about what she saw. Seems that they become closer as time passes and things start to happen and their attraction grows. This is quite an interesting storyline and the characters are all pretty well rounded. Some adult content. Romantic suspense. I was given a copy as a gift by the author without obligation.

Traitor is book one in the new series Last to Leave about a group of elite Marines. This is Ford’s story.

Both Ford and Peyton have suffered in the past by losses very close to them. Ford tries to stay away from her, but feels compelled to protect Peyton when she witnesses a murder. There is some push and pull, a mystery to solve and some romance.

Overall, this was an okay read. I never really felt much connection between the two main characters, and struggled a little getting into the story.

This book was a edge of your seat, suspenseful, angsty read. But it's also about taking back your life and finding your inner strength. And learning to trust others again. Will definitely have you turning the pages.

I've only read a couple of Blanchard's books but I've seen the growth in her writing. I really enjoy her writing style. And can't wait to continue to watch he grow as an author.

A great, suspenseful read.

"The last thing I need is a pretty blonde with secrets in her eyes busting up in my peace and quiet."

Ford Collier is an ex-Marine who left the service under a cloud. He now runs the family hotel business and tries to keep to himself. He's not interested in getting involved with the beautiful woman who checks into his hotel...especially when he recognises that she has a past as troubled as his own.

"What scares me the most...is not being scared of him at all."

Peyton Rhodes has been on a road trip to escape her past. When the beautiful landscapes of Windy Point inspire her to paint again, she decides to stay for a short while. Whilst there, she keeps pushing herself out of her comfort zone and straining her courage to its limit when she starts to suspect that things are not what they seem. She's especially tested when she keeps crossing paths with the gruff, intimidating, yet gorgeous owner of the hotel.

"All at once, the way he makes me want to sigh in contentment also makes me want to run. The comfort is both seductive and terrifying."

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I really admired Peyton's determination to throw off the shackles of terror that kept her tethered at home. She's brave and somewhat stubborn in her bid to be free of her fears - some would say that she's a bit reckless. I loved how much Ford was drawn to her. The innate protector in him and his desire for her made him want to keep her safe. I loved how two broken souls brought each other back to life, even though neither were looking for a relationship.

Overall, a really good story with just the right mix of suspense, sexual attraction and hope for new beginnings.

What do you do when you feel cornered, helpless, lost, unfit? I was going in to this reading looking for a real-life, honest to goodness traitor. I was almost heart hurt when I read the prologue. I was on pens and needles. I just, well let me say that it was a bit of a nail bitter. The we see the first chapter of Peyton and get glimpses of her life and what it may have been. The once scared woman was working to face her fears and make a life for herself only to have that put in a tailspin when she sees more than she was meant to. The reluctant Ford finds his way in to the problem and then from there its all on or over. I guess that depends on which way you want to look at things. There was great pacing, very good characters, a plotline that had you tapping that screen for the next page and the next chapter. And most importantly, sexy hot hunky military guys that eat up the pages with more, which gives me ideas of more coming from this group that has each others backs.

This book started off a little slow for me. It didn’t catch my interest as much as I had hoped but once it did pick up I couldn’t put it down. The suspense was really good. There were twists I didn’t see coming and I have to say that I was shocked. That’s always a good thing. It was a fast paced story so at times it was hard to feel the romance but the author made up for that. Peyton grew a lot from the start of the book to the end. I liked seeing her slowly overcome her issues. Ford was a jerk at times but deep down I knew he was a great guy that just had a bad past because of the military.

I don’t want to spoil the whole story but I will say the this author has a talent with writing bread crumbs that you won’t peace together until you know for sure. I can’t wait to see what is going to happen next. #2OCCJD

Ford and Peyton are two strangers who meet when Peyton books a room at Ford's lodge.  Both are emotionally damaged from from various events in their past; Peyton with a near death experience, and Ford with a past as an ex-marine with multiple tours in Afghanistan.  One night Peyton witnesses what she thinks is a murder and Ford seems to be the only person who believes her when there is no body or evidence to be found.  Ford and Peyton develop a relationship neither had been looking for or wanted but needed.  This book had just the right amount of romance and mystery.  It is one of the better reads I've had in a while.  The only issue I had was it was a little hard to follow the timeline.  Otherwise great story.

Dnf. I can't get past 15% because the author can't keep verb tenses straight. 1st person present tense is the most difficult to write, and this author is no where near ready to tackle it.

4 Star Traitor (Last To Leave #1) by Nicole Blanchard
Nicole Blanchard is a new author to me and I have absolutely no idea why.
This was a book that grabbed my attention and kept me interested from the first to the last chapter. I particularly like romantic suspense novels and this was a good example.
Both Ford and Peyton have pasts that have haunted them and because of this neither want to get into a relationship and both have trust issues .
Ford is ex military and as such knows more than most about danger and betrayal. When Peyton witnesses a murder, complications arise and Ford and Peyton have no choice but to rely on each other as danger rears it’s head.
This was a fast paced read that kept me guessing with quite a few twists and turns.

My review is written after listening to the audio version of this book.

Peyton's life as she knew it was destroyed three years ago when her family was murdered and since then being in her home has not felt like a place of safety but one of dread now after years of therapy she feels stronger and she's beaten her agoraphobia so decides to go on a road trip. She ends up in a small town amid the peaceful, serene mountains of North Carolina. Captivated by her surroundings she decides to stay a few days. Ford is a grumpy and unfriendly man who seems to have the wrong temperament to be an innkeeper but despite this, she decides to stay and indulge her creative instincts

Ford is ex-military his last mission went terribly wrong and has left him with lots of emotional baggage regarding the death of one of his men. When he returned home instead of finding a place to heal he finds that some regard him with suspicion. He's now managing his family’s Inn and just wants to be left alone and escape from the questioning stares he receives from almost everyone he meets. When Peyton checks into the inn he senses that she's in just as much pain as him, there's a hint of pain and fear in her eyes and that's something he can relate to, he's seen it before on deployment. Most unexpectedly he finds himself attracted to her and intrigued by her. He doesn't want a complication like Peyton, but he can't deny his attraction.

Then Peyton witnesses a murder, but no one except Ford believes her, there is no evidence not even a body but Ford’s protective instincts come into play as he realizes that Peyton is in danger. Ford is determined not to lose anyone else on his watch and he'll do whatever is necessary to protect Peyton and discover the truth before she becomes the next victim.

This story is about how two people who have been hurt in the past find the strength to try for a future together and in so doing heal not only themselves but each other. The chemistry between them was unexpected by both but is palpable and hot, their journey together is an emotional rollercoaster full of unexpected twists and turns, drama, suspicion and suspense, that had me on the edge of my seat hoping that they would finally find the happiness they deserve.

The narration of this compelling story is excellent and couldn't be improved upon Ariel Royce and Christopher Rourke are superb and completely captivating. Ariel's Peyton was perfect, you could feel Peyton grow from being so unsure and timid into a more confident and self-assured person fully ready and able to take her life back. Christoper was a perfect choice for the broody, ex-military, Ford his deep voice was just right, and together they did an excellent job bringing this compelling emotional and sexy story to life.

Traitor is a marvelously breathtaking journey of two tortured souls who can only find true solace in the precious sheltering love of the other. Like two lions these two find themselves subtly circling each other through surprising circumstances. Never one to take anything for granted we watch them fight the draw to the other until the bitter end. When danger rears its ugly head and threatens to take everything that is left, these two have to decide if the danger of love outweighs the risk of having life stolen before they ever truly live.

Peyton is attempting to do more than merely exist. She is desperate to find a life that brings her heart and mind back to life. When she drives through a small town that suddenly makes her heart sing and her soul fly, she decides to stay for a few days to see where her inspiration leads her. She is willing to allow herself to hope as long as she can control it. What she doesn’t anticipate is colliding with Ford. While she keeps her distance, Ford tries to battle with his foreign fascination in her. She awakens his curiosity and begins to melt his hardened heart. Threatening to undo him completely, danger follows Peyton and refuses to loosen its hold on her. This natural protector doesn’t know if he should keep her close or run head first into the unknown danger to safeguard his own heart.

Peyton and Ford took me completely by surprise and never stopped surprising me. They are not your typical couple with all of the horror they hide in their past, and yet they will be one of the most memorable ones without question. Peyton tore my heart open with her precious spirit, and Ford demolished the rest with his unrelenting brooding. Watching this couple face and overcome their demons is a extraordinary revelation that destroyed and then remade my heart transforming it into the most beautiful of creations.

Nicole Blanchard never ceases to amaze and delight me in the best possible ways as she writes stories that enthrall my imagination and make my heart sour at the endless possibilities. She is a true genius when it comes to romantic suspense. She knows how to effortlessly break you in two and then when you least expect it, raise you to the heights of Heaven. She is one of the few authors who know how to challenge and expand my view of hope, love, and life. I can’t express just how much I love experiencing each new story by this truly gifted author. Each new masterpiece leaves me breathless and utterly entranced. Every romance reader needs to pick up one of her books and truly understand where my heart calls home for this amazing genre.

Traitor
First to Fight Series, Book 7
By: Nicole Blanchard
Narrated by: Ariel Royce, Christopher Rourke

Nicole Blanchard pens another amazing novel set in her “First to Fight” series, a romantic suspense that not only captivates your attention the entire book but it tugs on your heartstrings too. The characters are realistic, easy to relate to and connect with, they were easy to care about too. Peyton Rhodes is trying to get on with her life after suffering a traumatic event and a devastating loss. It has been three years since, a tough three years, but she stepped out of her house and into her car and while she has a destination, she is in no hurry to get there. A road trip takes her to scenic Windy Point, a small town and tourist stop in North Carolina where she decided to stay and booked a room in “The Bear Lake Lodge” for the week. The place was recommended, but the supposed owner, Ford Collier, was not the friendliest or the most welcoming for someone in the hospitality business. Ford, former Marine Special Ops, had his reasons for being a grump or not wanting to be overly friendly with anyone. There is something about Peyton that he recognizes and it is something he is familiar with, pain, she is hiding her pain, but he caught a glimpse of it.  And when Peyton stumbles upon a dead body by the river, a body that disappeared, Ford believes her. The police are called in and on the case, but without a body or evidence of one, there is not much they can do. Then other unexplained things happened, and she questions her own sanity, but Ford is there for her, keeps her grounded, and wants to protect her. I thought these two were great together and for each other, despite being broken and haunted by their past. I loved how everything played out in this book, it is a beautifully plotted romance and the mystery suspense storylines are well done, they keep you on your toes and take you to the edge of your seat and wow, I never guessed or saw that coming. Nicole Blanchard, thank you for another fantastic story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧 And for the terrific narration, Ariel Royce and Christopher Rourke were the perfect cast to bring these characters to life and did so with a complete understanding of who they were portraying, giving each a voice that fit that character’s persona and were believable in every role they played. They set the perfect tone for the story, captured all the characters’ emotions and projected them into their performance. These versatile voice artists are entertaining storytellers and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for the great listen.

Both narrators did a great job! I especially liked the tone for the female narrator. A good listen. Nice quality too.

Love the setup for this one; Peyton has had a trauma in her past and is just starting to come back out of her shell; she arrives in a small town that draws her in, but when she thinks she sees a dead body, things aren’t looking as idyllic as she thought. Love murder mystery type of stories! Throw in some romance and I’m there! I do wish there was more action though; the possible murder felt like an afterthought at times. Still love that premise though! Lead male, Ford, also has some trauma from his military days, so he’s a little gruff. He’s a bit reluctant when it comes to Peyton, but he’s still supportive of her. I didn’t quite feel the chemistry between them; the progression from you annoy me to ooo baby come here, just didn’t feel fully natural. They do have some cute moments though, and do have that steam in the bedroom.

I didn’t connect with Peyton; possibly too much damsel for me, her personality was just off putting for me. Possibly with how she treated Ford at times; she keeps mentioning his rudeness, but really it’s her that is rude to him. I felt her character was inconsistent too. I liked Ford; good protective nature, but his character too felt inconsistent. He has that protective nature, but then there’s a point when he just leaves Peyton on her own with a possible killer on the loose. Also, he has a very annoying sister I could’ve done without. There was also some weird additions that didn’t amount to much for the story; why mention Peyton taking note of the supposed murder victims clothing color if she wasn’t going to put it together who the possible victim may be, or even mention it to the police? Did she just forget about it? Was it just for us readers to know who the possible victim could be? Not sure. Either way, I feel the story had some inconsistencies, and I would’ve liked a bit more excitement with the whole situation overall.

I’d say a 3.5 rating for me, but rounded to a 4 for a good listening experience and a fun premise!

Traitor is another exciting story in Nicole Blanchard's First to Fight military romantic suspense series. The prologue had me on the edge of my seat, taking my breath away, and breaking my heart. Ford and Peyton are two broken souls who have secluded themselves away from the pain, and horror they have both endured. Payton is trying to take back her life, and has found herself in the peaceful, serene mountains of North Carolina. She meets the rugged, broody Ford when she rents a room at his resort. He is so big and radiates danger, making him everything she should avoid, but can't stay away. Peyton is a quandary to Ford. She looks like a pampered princess, but there was a hint of panic, and fear in her eyes that he recognizes so well from his deployments. He is intrigued by her bravery and sense of adventure. He doesn't want a complication like Peyton, but he can't deny their attraction. When Peyton witnesses a murder, Ford is the only one who believes her. As they look for clues, their lives become in danger, and it's a race against time to find the killer, before the killer finds them.
I really liked both Ford and Peyton. They had endured such tragedy, and felt such guilt, yet they were finding the strength to build a new life. Their chemistry was off the charts and their passion was explosive. There are some great secondary characters who added so much charm to this story as well. I was completely riveted by this fast paced, and suspenseful journey.
The narration by Ariel Royce and Christopher Rourke was completely captivating. They are both new to me which is always fun to discover new voices to enjoy. Royce really nailed Peyton's character from timid and unsure in the beginning to more confident and self assured to take her life back. Rourke's deep voice was perfect for the broody, ex military, Ford. They did a great job bringing this exhilarating, emotional, and sexy story to life.

It’s a good 3.5 to me.
Peyton suffered a big trauma in the past. She is now an adult and is looking for something that would make her feel again. She founds it when she gets to this small town where she meets Ford, the owner of the lodge she is staying. Ford is a grumpy man that doesn’t want more drama in his life, but when Peyton sees a dead body in the lake near the lodge and no one believes her except of him, their connection grows.

I would have loved for more emotional connection. Considering the prologue is the biggest drama in Fords life and Peyton’s trauma made her develop agoraphobia, I would have loved to see how they would explain that to each other, how they would approach that… but it wasn’t like that.

It’s a short book and you can feel that some topics aren’t developed a lot… but it’s enjoyable. I really liked it.

Both trying to lay a violent past to rest, to move forward and begin again.

Nicole Blanchard presents you Ford and Peyton’s beautifully, depicted story - TRAITOR (Last To Leave - Bk 1) about new beginnings, owning your past to live in your present, learning to trust, facing fears so you can regain control after tragedy has blown your world apart. You decide you can’t live in fear anymore, It’s time to take back the control that is missing, no matter what comes your way. Starting over is tougher than you can imagine. You’d rather stay in a bubble of comfort, till a certain, taciturn man enters to shake things up. That very man, you want to explore a growing, powerful, mutual attraction, all without getting attached.

What happens when you are the sole witness to another tragedy that you think you may have imagined? Your world is turned upside down yet again. Do you fight? Do you flee? Maybe having that right person by your side can be a help and not a hinderance. Sometimes what you’re seeking is taken out of your hands. You need to learn to trust that very man, who comes with his own secrets, one who isolates himself from the world, following his own devastating loss, to believe you.

A wonderful story that draws you in from the very first moment. It’s sadness and tragedy that drives this suspenseful intrigue, drama and action throughout Nicole’s story. Wonderful and quirky characters that I found myself investing in. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Nicole Blanchard’s TRAITOR, her first book in the series LAST TO LEAVE. Nicole leaves you with a sneak peek into what’s to come… adding more mystery and layers to an evolving new series. I’m so looking to finding out about Ford’s former teammates.

Traitor
First to Fight Series, Book 7
By: Nicole Blanchard
Narrated by: Ariel Royce, Christopher Rourke

Nicole Blanchard knows how to keep my attention with her fabulous romantic suspense! This is the first book in the First to Fight series and I was on the edge from the start. Peyton has come to town, running from her past but always looking over her shoulder. She witnessed the murder of her family and now is just beginning to put her life back together. Working for grumpy Ford at the hotel is just to get by until she finds something else. But just when she gets ready to leave, she finds a murdered woman on the beach. Now determined to see the case until the end, she is staying and the chemistry between the broody, former marine is growing. But will Ford let his heart be taken? Will he be able to keep Peyton safe a the murder is investigated? I would say this is a fun listen, but some would think I am crazy. I love a book that pulls me in and makes me think. Blanchard always plots her stories so well, and this one not being and exception had me trying to guess the entire time. My heart raced with suspense and with the budding love. It's a fabulous story and wonderful listen!

Christopher Rourke and Ariel Royce bring it all alive with a fantastic performance. Rourke dives into the grumpy man that is Ford. He never gives an inch, is stubborn and difficult, and when he loves it fierce. Rourke captures his voice with all the nuances perfectly. Royce is new to me, showing her versatility as Peyton grows. At first, the timid, scared woman, she finds her ground and follows her way. Royce nails it in each scene as Peyton begins her new journey. I loved these two and think they made a wonderful team and great listen.

What a great start to Nicole Blanchard's new, and exciting series, Last to Leave. Peyton is a quandry to Ford.
This is a fast paced, suspenseful journey that is exhilarating, emotional, and sexy, and I loved every minute of it. I also loved the sneak peek into the second book and can't wait for Cal's story next in Operator!
