Sydney Hyatt and Parker Duncan were never meant to be more than a one-night stand. A year later, they can’t imagine life without the other. But Sydney’s urge to protect Parker, and her devotion to justice, strain their relationship when a cop and close friend is murdered and Sydney joins forces with the Silver Lake Police to stop the killer. Cass Sellars is a certified fraud examiner and criminal justice professional. She leads white-collar criminal, corporate and financial fraud, and theft investigations. Formerly an editor of a small magazine, a creative journalist, and public speaker, she’s always been a writer at heart. The Lightning Series represents a first endeavor into the world of romantic fiction. After life-changing experiences as a victim of corrupt “justice,” she felt compelled to write about powerful lesbian characters that have the opportunity to fight for those who have been victims and seek justice where money and politics are not always the only winning assets. Sellars grew up in the Midwest and in Great Britain, but spent much of her adult life on the East Coast, which she misses dearly,as she currently lives near San Francisco with her wife of five years. She dabbles in interior design, event planning, singing, travel, women’s music, and works at being a vital part of the lesbian and creative communities.
**'It's always good to revise your work before you think it's complete -- because there might be lots of unnecessary sentences or paragraphs need deleting which ends up being better for whatever story you're telling..'
2.5stars! For some strange reason i'm not emotionally drawn to their (Parker & Sydney) relationship. Everything seems forced (the crime, the behaviors of the parents, even their behavior etc..) And maybe this is why the storytelling feels mediocre at best.
3 1/2 Stars. This is book 2 in the Lightning series. Do you have to read book 1 first? Maybe not, but I highly recommend that you do. I think when reading a series and the first book has a pair meeting and turning into a couple; than the second book has them together in a relationship, you really need to see how that connection grew. Not only that, but a lot happened in the first book. There is plenty of time something from the first book pops up and Sellars doesn't spend too much time explaining the history. That is good for people like me who read the first book and don't want to re-read the same thing, but would be confusing for those who didn't read book 1.
I would classify this as a mystery/romance. I guess you could also call this a suspense novel, but it is more like a book with a few suspenseful moments. This is more mystery than romance, where book 1 was mostly romance with drama and a little excitement. I thought the mystery was well done and the clues unfolded well. But I do have to admit, I think so much attention to the crime/mystery, you had less time for character development. There was two new characters that were pretty central to the story, I feel like I never really got to know them. That brings it around to the one of main complaints I had. This story had 8 characters central to parts of the story. While we all know Syd and Parker, from book 1, in the beginning so many characters where hard to keep track of. Mac and Jenny, secondary characters from book 1, played a big role in this book. It took me a while to even remember them. I found myself having to keep re-reading names, or I would get confused. So while the mystery was good, the character development was definitely lacking in this book.
I really liked Syd and Parker in the first book. I was happy to get more time with these characters. I still enjoyed them in this book, but Parker needs to work on her self confidence. A few times it got annoying, but I realized if I dealt with some of the stuff she did, I might be annoying too. There is an ex that come into the picture to stir things up. After the ex from the first book, I thought why is Sellars doing this again? I can't stand exes in lesfic, and I was really worried about this twist. Thank goodness it was actually handled pretty well. It added a little drama to the book, but it was not ridiculous. And the ex had her part to play, so I'm really not mad at all.
Book 1, Lightning Strikes, was a debut book for Sellars. I was impressed by that. I don't think this book was as good, but I still enjoyed it. I felt like it had more flaws in general. But I love a good mystery/crime book, and I was entertained. I do hope the next book Sellars writes is not part of the series. I thought this book ended well, and doesn't really need a third. I would like to read a new adventure with new characters from Sellars.
An ARC was given to me by BSB, for a honest review.
So this is the second book in an on going series. I think my issue with this book is that I did not read the first one first. Maybe, had I done that I would have understood some things better. It is a good read. I just found some things frustrating which I am sure would have been cleared up if I had read book one. The book is about Syd and Parker, who apparently were only meant to be a one night stand. Now, a year later they can not imagine life without one another.
The plot in this book is about a close friend who is a cop is murdered. Sydney with her company which reconstructs crime scenes helps with the investigation. The plot is very much centered on the mystery to uncover the killer. There is very little romance. It moves a long quite quickly. I gave it 3.5 stars rounded up to four. I just felt like there was something missing. Enjoy!
After a year together Sydney and Parkers’ relationship has deepened and solidified, despite their emotional baggage, but when a local cop and close friend is killed their worlds are turned upside down. Sydney’s connections to the local police force through her crime reconstruction business put her in the perfect place to investigate the death and leads them, and their friends, into a tangled world of corruption and deceit.
This is the second in the Lightning Series and leads us away from the more romantic start into crime, suspense and thriller; an excellent combination that allows the author to bring out the depths of the characters intelligence and showcase their various skills while continuing to build on their relationships and friendships.
It’s well plotted and thought through, with a complex set of players and events all based on a corrupt ring of people. The multiple threads are well managed and the arc works well, teasing with hints and building the detail while managing to conceal the exact who and what, to keep us on the edge of our seats.
Sydney and Parker continue to grow and deepen as characters. The investigation tests their relationship when it brings out issues about over-protective instincts and fear of losing a loved one, whether to an ex or as a repercussion from their investigation. The development of new characters adds interest and keeps the human interest going while remaining centred around the two main characters and their warehouse home.
Thoroughly enjoyed this, a great follow up and like the direction the series is going, I look forward to reading more from this author.
Sydney Hyatt and Parker Duncan, the story continues with love and commitment in the air. I really wanted to like this next book in the series but there was something missing and I think it was a plot. The plot was not very engaging and I had a difficult time hanging in until the end. Some of the characters are interesting especially if you like the butch, protect my women and the femme, take care of my women perspective. One of the couples have a baby which is sweet. I thought the most interesting part of the story was the interaction between Taylor and Darcy.

Sydney and Parker have been together for a year but now face an emotional time as they try to protect one another whilst helping their friend’s at Silver Lake Police to solve the mystery of who killed their friend and fellow police officer Sandy. The past turns up to test the strength of their relationship, whilst emotions run high amongst a group of friends who are devoted to getting justice for Sandy, but the tests they face are straining things for Parker and Sydney.
I love this series so much! The stories are intense, emotional, and exciting with all the expected thrills for a mystery story but also because the characters and their relationship is just amazing. The connection between Sydney and Parker is just so raw, emotional and passionate that I can’t help but get caught up in it.
This is the second book in Lightning series and you will benefit from reading the first book to fully get the effect and understand Parker and Sydney’s relationship but it also worked as a standalone story. As the story focuses on Sydney heavily involved in supporting Mack in trying to find out what happened to Sandy, the focus of the story is more on the connection between them all and uncovering the mystery. Parker and Sydney’s relationship isn’t the main focus as it was in the first book but it is being tested and so sits perfectly alongside the events taking place and they work to solve the crime.
I felt as if I were one of the group. I felt their emotions and need for justice for Sandy. I was anxious to get the answers and worried about them when situations became intense. There were all sorts of moments in this story, from celebratory to utterly heartbreaking and I was emotionally in the moment with the characters every step of the way. There is no escaping the passion shared between Sydney and Parker, so you will definitely get swept up in it.
I just adore the Lightning series, it’s emotional and raw and I just can’t get enough of it! I highly recommend this story and the series. It is addictive and I just can’t wait to get and read the next book!
genre: murder mystery, contemporary romance length: 74,000 words, 22 chapters characters: Parker Duncan, manager at Davidson Properties Sydney Hyatt, owner of D.R.I.F.T. (Digital Reconstruction and Independent Forensic Technology) Mackenzie Foster, police sergeant at Silver Lake PD Jenny Foster, HR director at Davidson Properties Darcy Dean, crime lab manager Taylor Westin, inventory manager at CacheTech setting: Silver Lake, Virginia my opinion: - book two in the Lightning series - there was more mystery than romance in this sequel and my impression is that that was at the expense of character development - this was a good read but I found it slightly less engaging and less successful than the first novel in the series - I'll continue to follow this series - recommended cover: nice, well related to the plot book rating: 4 stars eARC by Bold Strokes Books via NetGalley
An honest review thanks to NetGalley. This was a good book as a stand-alone. The problem was that I read the first in this series before and re-read it before starting this book. LIghtning chasers doesn't read as a sequel; it is an entirely different kind of read than the first one, which was a bit confusing. If you read this as a standalone, it is a good book with an interesting investigation that leaves the reader wanting more.
This story was very well done! Right amount of suspense. Characters well developed. Good supporting cast of characters. Definitely the right amount of romance and sexiness. Overall, well done!
Oh man!! For ages I was yelling, ASK MIA!! And then Mia was the one who gave them the information without really trying. Damn, the first person you'd question would be the partner... right? I liked this though, I'm happy with how the story played out and how the corrupt people were brought down... especially Syd's mum.

I did not read the first book in the series and maybe that was the problem but I could not quite figure out what the book was about in the first few chapters, which was kind of frustrating and almost made me give up on it. The more I read the clearer the story became and I finally figured some of it out but it still didn’t really wow me because of the initial frustration. It can be that it was tied to the first book and that’s why it was a bit confusing and that’s why I wouldn’t recommend it as a standalone book.
Another fantastic read by Sellars! Lightning chasers is the second in the Lightning series. I absolutely fell in love with the characters in the first book and couldn't wait to see what the talented Sellars had in store for us this time. She really does an excellent job at making the characters seem so down to earth. The perfect amount of suspense and just enough romance to keep you wanting more. So looking forward to the next book!
Somehow this book was even better than the first one! I was finally was able to let go of my protectiveness of Parker and start to fall in love with Sydney. In addition to the deepening romance there is also heartbreak with the loss of their close friend. The outstanding details of the investigation of their friends death makes this book riveting and you’ll find yourself trying to put the pieces together with Sydney, Parker, Mack and Jenny. I’ll definitely keep reading this series.
Another good read following our MC’s from book 1 (Parker and Syd) plus their friends and a few new characters. This sees Parker and Syd secure in their relationship but unsettled by events when a friend is murdered and the police seem to take a lackadaisical approach to solving the case. Syd gets involved which brings someone from her past back into her life. It also inadvertently invites danger which escalates as matters move towards a climax. More murder mystery than romance but it’s another rewarding read which I very much enjoyed. I’ll be moving on to book 3 of this trilogy very soon…
Definitely worth the wait. Sellars really has a way with words. I love the character descriptions and the story kept me wanting more. It was a nice transition from her first novel and Syd & Parker still have "lightning" for sure but the mystery cranked up a notch. I fell in love with a couple of new characters and it wouldn't hurt my feelings to see more of them in the next book?? The suspense was well written as it kept me guessing until the end. Well done Sellars! Now I guess we hurry up and wait for the next installment.
This is the sequel to “Lightning Strikes”. I, for one, was waiting for this follow-up book since I enjoyed the first book. Ms. Sellars does a good job in her character development. She makes you feel a connection with the women in her stories. Syd Hyatt and Parker Duncan are featured again as the main characters in this book, but Ms. Sellars provides us with a deeper understanding of the women who make up their circle of friends. By providing more information about the other women, Ms. Sellars opened the book to additional books in this series.
I enjoyed the plot. After the first chapter, I was thoroughly hooked. Since it is a murder mystery, I expected that there might be a body or two. However, I was really shocked to learn the name of the victim.
Syd’s mother’s part in the mystery is weak and Ms. Sellars could have developed this segment or created another woman to play in this web of deceit.
I rate this book as 4-1/2 stars out of 5. I look forward to reading another book featuring this circle of friends.
I was given this ARC in return for a fair and honest review.
« Lightning Chasers » (Lightning Series - Book 2) is Cass Sellars' second novel. I liked a lot « Lightening Strikes » (Lightning Series - Book 1) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...… But this second novel is even better !!! 🙃🙂
The story sets once again in Silver Lake, Virginia and still focuses on lovebirds Parker Duncan & Sydney Hyatt (don’t worry the great chemistery is still there !!), but the role of some of the secondary characters from the first novel is reinforced and we’re introduced to new ones, including Darcy Dean, Syd’s first lover … Everyone will get together, at their own risks, to solve the murder of one of their cop friends. All this allows us, in the same time, to go with them on a good adventure and know better the MCs with whom, personally, I feel « connected ».
My rating : 5 ⭐️
Gone the sweet contemporary romance with a tad of thriller elements in it … Welcome the thriller with a tad of sweet contemporary romance !!! 💜💙💚💛🧡❤️ And it worked even better for me !!! I found this 2nd book in the series really captivating. Cass Sellars has a way with words wich really works for me => The good (and improved) writing style is there .. & it’s mixed with a good scenario, some good banters between the characters (MCs & secondary ones all together) which include some touches of dark humor ... And a huge + : there’s still NO breakup for the couple at the 80% mark … 😊
I really want to know more and more about the lovebirds & and their friends… I can’t wait to read the next installment : « Unexpected Lightning » (Lightning Series - Book 3) https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4... ..
The more I read this series and the more I visualise it as the scenario of a (series of) movie(s) … As a matter of fact, I’d love watching it on a big screen …
