Deputy Joe #5

The Family Eternal

Rate this book
When the body of a young woman is found in a burning rental cabin, Deputy Joe Peterson and newly minted Fire Inspector Kabe Varghese must learn to work together to find out who she is and why she died.

Folks will tell you that family is second only to God in Utah. But what brings strength to some can sow sorrow with others.

On a bleak winter morning, a young woman's corpse smolders in the remains of a burned rental cabin. Clues to her identity are rarer than frozen choke-cherries in the Utah backcountry. Deputy Joe Peterson, assisted by Kabe Varghese in his first case as a fire inspector trainee, doggedly hunts for who she is and why she died. As they sink deeper into the investigation, Joe struggles with how his life is now personally and professionally intertwined with Kabe's.

Outed, excommunicated and disciplined because of the man he found love with; the last year of Joe's life has careened like an avalanche toward an abyss. Is doom inevitable? Or is the best chance to live surrendering to the fall?

In The Family Eternal, Joe and Kabe work together to find the person responsible for the death of a young mother, with Joe acting as the ‘teacher’ since Kabe is training to become a Fire Inspector. Because of that, the case was more focused on the investigative process than on the mystery itself, but that didn’t make it any less interesting, especially since

On the relationship front, I couldn’t have been happier. Not so much because of the events, , but mostly because the way Joe and Kabe went at everything was just so them, so perfectly in character.

I don’t know if this is supposed to be the final book in the series or not, but if it is, I’m perfectly happy to leave things as they are.

Deputy Joe Peterson is one of the most unique characters I've read in MM genre over the years. So when I found out there was a new book of his, I immediately purchased it. In this book Joe and his partner who recently minted as fire inspector trainee, Kabe, discover a burned female corpse inside an apartment building, her daughter is saved but in need for burn treatment.

When investigating Joe and Kabe uncovers the female's connection to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I wasn't particularly comfortable reading about the Mormon practice that became significant to the crime. It's not because that I don't particularly agree with some of their practices but reading anything related to crime motivated by religion or faith is never easy for me.

Having said that, I was happily satisfied with the relationship (). Plus I love Joe so much. Joe can be such a romantic even if he still a bit uneasy with showing affection in public. But that's what makes him, well, Joe. His to Kabe particularly took my breath away.

PS: It seems that this is the FINAL book of the series :(

This one reminded me a lot of the first book Hard Fall, the book where I first met Joe. We are back in Panguitch for one, but also it is the tone of the book, the writing.

Buchanan plays families here, not Happy Families just families, with their love, their hate, their comfort, their abuse. We have Danni's story, an eye opener for me, Joe's family and the family Joe is creating with Kabe.

A good book in this series.

It's always a pleasure to read a Deputy Joe novel, and am the happiest of readers feeling a bit sad that I've now read the last book in the series. But I do think it's an excellent place for the story to come to a stop.

As usual, the mystery in this book isn't that important to me, but the relationship progression is. One of my favourite parts was a great - now historical - glimpse into the rights for same-sex couples to marry in Utah. So funny it all began with a legal slipup! This story also gave me a harrowing look into how impoverished some Americans live. It's always a shock, and I salute the writing skills for immersing me into that particular side of reality.

And Joe and Kabe, I loved following their journey.

I've already re-read every book in the series for each new instalment, so by now I've read the first book five times. Still love it, and always will.

I always liked the series and Deputy Joe was always such a wonderfully complex character but I've got to say that this book here takes it all to a higher level. Over the course of the series the playing field gets leveled (so to speak) as Kabe moves on with respect to his career (which is not about money but about competence and authority in his own field) and his personality. I'm really glad about that because I have to admit that I find the role of the brat in BDSM sometimes rather irritating but I'm quite happy that the author ensures that the reader knows it's a voluntary role and not a result of an imbalance of power in their day-to-day lives. Our little Kabe is really growing up :-).

The second aspect that I found rather breath-taking is how the author makes it possible to understand Joe's faith. Not LDS as such but one of the central themes in this book is how selfless Joe's act of commiting to his love for Kabe is. Not only for the fact that people in his closely knit community basically shun him and not only for his relationship with his family (which finally comes to the forefront) but because he is willing to sacrifice things for himself that are so deeply embedded in his soul. I'm probably not explaining this very well but even for a pretty much non-religious person like me (ex-Catholic - I'll never be really non-religious. It's a live-sentence.) it is glaringly apparent how sincere Joe is in his beliefs and it is completely irrelevant whether I share them or not - they are his truth. And Kabe is worth just that.

Eh, it's getting late, I'm tired and I probably wouldn't be able to get my point across without quoting half of the book. Just - really good.

I know you think that that's probably not what you are looking for in your basic m/m romance but seriously, read that series.

Although there is a murder mystery in this story, the focus is not really on who did it, but on the investigation process, and on our two guys - Joe and Kabe - as they figure out a new working relationship.

We are with these men as they follow the murder clues into the abuses of polygamous marriages, and decide their future as Utah in 2013 briefly allows gay marriages to occur. I loved Joe's ambivalence and panic as the world moves faster than he anticipated. I enjoyed Kabe's good heart and enthusiastic but also pragmatic nature. It was cool to see the adjustments they make to grow into each other's true matches. We get a look at old friends and family, but this is a focused book, whose heart is really these two men and their relationship, against a work-infused backdrop. A real treat for fans of the series and this couple.

I was so excited to see a new book in this series. Joe and Kabe are a unique couple and if you haven’t checked out this series yet I suggest you change that right now. This is a series best read from the beginning and this installment picks up shortly after the last book.

Joe and Kabe have been together for a year now. Kabe has come far from the man first introduced in Hard Fall and is now training as a fire inspector. Deputy Joe is now a detective. When a fire scene also becomes a murder investigation, they work together on the case with Joe mentoring Kabe which adds a new dynamic to their relationship.

Joe is a simple yet complex character. He thinks things through and is his own man. While he makes an effort to understand others’ views, he always makes his own decisions. Even though there are some aspects of his relationship with Kabe that still make Joe uncomfortable, including any public display or declaration, Joe does everything in his power to understand why he feels and reacts the way he does and to overcome it. Kabe, on the other hand, is proud and pushes Joe to accept that he is worthy of being in love, and being loved and that nobody has the right to judge it. Joe’s love for Kabe has caused a complete upheaval in his family and personal life, but Joe is one of the most level-headed, understanding characters I’ve ever read. He loves Kabe beyond what he ever expected, he holds his faith dear even though he has been ex-communicated from the LDS church he was raised in, and he has come to understand and accept that his relationship with God is personal, it is his alone and is working through the pain and uncertainty that being cast out has caused.

Kabe has really brought Joe to life in this series. He sees things from a different perspective and is able to offer Joe understanding and advice that he may never have considered. Helping Joe to understand that a god that made him gay would not then cast him aside, that perhaps it’s the faulty interpretation of religion by man that is the real problem. While it may sound like this is a story heavy on religion, it’s really very well integrated into the character and the storylines.

Joe not only struggles with the public aspects of their relationship, but he also is treading a line with their BDSM relationship. Joe enjoys Kabe’s desire for breath play and intense pain, they both get off on it, but he still fears injuring Kabe. It’s something they both need and want though and Joe finds plenty of ways to indulge. I just love how big, stoic Joe melts when it comes to his love for Kabe. His generally awkward declarations of love are getting more and more romantic and he finally gets it completely right towards the end of this book. Kabe is no slouch himself and what he does for Joe in this book is completely amazing, even if Joe isn’t quite sure at the time. His motivations show how much he knows and loves every aspect of what makes Joe so special.

I also enjoyed the investigation, which delves into some of the more controversial aspects of the LDS religion, but I wasn’t completely satisfied with the resolution which wrapped up with more telling than showing. Then again, the wrap up was not unrealistic when it comes to police work involving many competing agencies, but in fiction I like to see it all play out and really see the bad guys getting what they deserve.

James Buchanan has created two wonderful, complex characters in Kabe and Joe and I couldn’t have asked for more as far as the relationship development went. If this is the last we see of Kabe and Joe it was a fitting and satisfying ending. I’m not going to spoil it, but I thought it was just perfect. I highly recommend this series if you haven’t tried it, and if you’re already a fan go grab this one – you won’t regret it.

I still want more Joe and Kabe

I was so excited when I saw a new Deputy Joe novel, only now it's Detective Joe. Kabe is Inspector Varghese now and they've both been drawn into a case of murder and arson. The details of the case take us on a deeper dive into Mormonism and some of the obscure polygamist sects that still exist in places. Joe is also caught, once again, between the faith and beliefs he still holds onto, and his abiding love for Kabe.

James Buchanan does a marvelous job of intertwining the case investigation with information related to being Mormon, without being either preachy or dismissive. Kabe is rather dismissive but has respect for the fact that Joe still has faith in much of it. Joe is still a bit lost in some ways without the underpinnings of the church and temple but a surprising event helps him reconcile more of his beliefs. If you've read the series, you already know what complex characters Joe and Kabe are. At least there was one good kinky scene but not much sex in the story.

I really hope we haven't seen the last of Joe and Kabe. This particular story is set in 2013, for specific reasons. I'd really like to see them again in the present day, with perhaps a new character or two added to their story (hint, hint James!).

Good

3.75 ⭐️

Good addition to the series. Personally not my favourite. We see Joe and Kabe’s relationship hit another level in this one when laws open up and allow it. I enjoyed seeing Joe worry and question if he wants to do to make that step. I liked that there was a thought process and questioning. It was something he never anticipated being able to do. I loved Lacy’s reaction, his parents were still skeptical but went along because it meant something to Joe.
The mystery didn’t hold me in this one as much. I enjoyed seeing Kabe and Joe work together in official capacity but it also started getting a little bit preachy too at times.

What a treat! I had no idea this book even existed.- which, honesty, I do not understand how because the Deputy Joe series is my favorite m/m series and James Buchanan is one of my favorite writers in the genre. I read every book they write. So, how did this happen. I. Do. Not. Know.

Anyway, while I love this couple, it is Joe's journey that is so heart-tugging in such a lovely way. To see him get the life he could barely allow himself to dream about makes my heart swell. I also love that Joe has not rejected his faith even though he has been rejected by his church. I love that he lives by his principles. Kabe has come a long way as well, becoming a valuable part of the community in his own right.
So, I am really glad I discovered this existed. I look forward to he next Buchanan book, whether it is another in this series or something new.

The mystery, and indeed some of Joe and Kabe's evolving story, in this story is a bit of an education for those like me not familiar with the LDS. That said both worked very well. You can see Kabe growing in confidence in his new professional role and Joe in his personal life.

My only gripe was the way the mystery side of things just kind of wound up way too easily and quickly.

This was a satisfying conclusion to the series.

The mystery isn't the main focus of the story but it's interesting and works well to highlight Joe and Kabe's growth. Kabe is now a professional in his own right working alongside Joe as a trainee Fire Investigator. He's still got a lot to learn but the initial power imbalance between him and Joe has transformed to a more equal relationship. Joe has made a real effort to address his biases while still holding true to the tenets of his faith.

Their relationship feels solid and they finally get the HEA they deserve.

The mystery took a back seat to the relationship between Joe and Kabe in this book. The fire and dead body mean that Kabe and Joe have to work together, each bringing their own skill set to the investigation.

Joe has made some big personal strides since we first met him. The repressed, emotionally stunted man from Hard Fall has opened up so much. Don't get me wrong, there are still things that make him very nervous, but he is trying so hard to make his life with Kabe work on every level. He is out at work and to his family and he is getting so much better about communicating what she needs to Kabe. I don't want to give anything away, but there is a great romantic turn in this book that is so brilliantly written and is wonderfully timely.

4.5 heart review for Love Bytes Reviews

A copy of this book was provided in exchange for an honest review. This review was originally posted at Love Bytes Reviews, please visit www.lovebytesreviews.com to see this and many more reviews, interviews, and giveaways!

I need to start this by saying I LOVE the cover! The covers for the other books in this series have not all be great, but this one is perfect! I can totally see that as Joe. Love it!

This latest book is another excellent combination of a murder investigation plot, plus personal issues involving Joe and Kabe, and an education about the Mormon faith. To catch us up, Joe is a Sheriff’s Deputy in a small town in Utah. He is Mormon, and a strong believer, except he’s gay. This is a big issue for him and has caused much stress and soul-searching in his life. Over the last four books, we’ve seen him fall in love with Kabe, who is not Mormon, which also causes much stress and soul-searching for Joe. Joe comes out to his family, his elders, and gets excommunicated. But he’s still a Mormon at heart. As he and Kabe have settled in to a life together, Joe has found a progressive place to worship, and seems to have accepted his sexuality and it’s place in his religion. That’s not to say he’s happy about it by any means.

Kabe has had his own issues, family drama, drugs, legal issues, etc, but once he and Joe start their life together, he settles down emotionally and finds a job to focus on. The two also settle nicely in to a BDSM relationship, Kabe being a pain slut and Joe happy to dish it out. Joe’s religion is an issue for Kabe though, he just doesn’t get it, and doesn’t understand how Joe can still call himself a Mormon, when they kicked him out. This continues to cause stress! By this book the two have been together for a year and are living together. They have begun to work together a bit, as Kabe has become a Fire Investigator in training, and Joe has been a big help in his training.

The murder mystery plot of this book is based around the death of a young woman Kabe finds in a cabin fire. He is able to rescue the woman’s daughter, but the woman appears to have already been dead, leading them to suspect the fire was set to cover up the murder. Joe and Kabe work together to track back through connections to determine who the woman was, where the two came from, and who killed her. This leads them to a polygamy group, which bring up all sorts of icky things…. Kabe gets a lesson on this ugly side of Mormonism, and so did I.

Joe and Kabe are obviously an established couple by now, so there is no will-they-won’t-they happening as far as the romance plot line, but instead we gets several yummy sex scenes, as naughty as they are with these two. Joe goes after Kabe with clothes pins in one scene, and the two engage in a bit of breath play in another. I saw several reviews giving away a big spoiler, and I don’t want to do that here. But a big thing happens between the two of them, a very good thing, that leads to even more questioning of his faith by Joe, and a lack of understanding of why he’s questioning by Kabe. It also bring up some family drama, negative drama from Joe’s parents, but good drama later.

This thing that happens was kinda awesome, and kinda made me cry. That’s all I’ll say about that!

So I have to say there were a bunch of typos in this book. I’m hoping maybe it was an edition prior to a final edit, I’ve seen that with review copies before. I know Joe has a certain way of talking, but the issues I saw were not that.

I’ve really enjoyed this series! I’m happy with the way this book ended, I’ve seen mention of it being the last in the series, and I think Joe and Kabe are in a good place. I’ll be sad to not see them again, I do so love them! A year in their lives was short, with lots of shit going on, I’d love to see how they are after five years, or ten years. James Buchanan has created some really cool characters with these two, and totally opened my eyes to the Mormon faith. It always seemed a bit of a joke to me, especially after seeing The Book of Mormon, but after reading these books I have a healthy respect for men like Joe. He’s just living his life as best he can, and doing what he believes is right. He’s got strong morals, even though he doesn’t agree with everything he’s been taught. I love him as a character. Kabe too, although Joe is really the star for me. Kabe was fine, but Joe’s strength just got me.

I very much recommend this series, and this book as part of it. If this is the last, it’s a strong way to end it. Go out on a high note! You could read it without reading the others if you had too, but you’d be missing a lot of character development. And missing out on a lot of awesome sex! Go grab the first one and start there. If you have read the others, wait until you read this one! Yeah!

Thank you James, for writing Deputy Joe and Kabe!

A deserving 5 stars

I must say the last book about Joe and Kabe didn't quite do it for me, but this book was a fitting end to their story.
If it is the last book ?
I would love have another book about them working together, because seeing Joe mentor Kabe was a joy.
Seeing Kabe be the man he is because it was in him and all he needed was some one to believe him and be there, well you have to read the book.
It was painful to see how Joe still didn't believe he deserved a happy and full life, he has come such a long way since the first book.
It makes me sick to think if Kabe hadn't come into his life he would be essentially alone for the rest of his life.
Great book and I hope there will be another one...maybe with dogs and Rugrats.

Could Not Be a Better Ending

Deputy Joe and Fire Inspector Kabe are now living together and somewhat surreptitiously allowing their Mormon based communities to see who they are. This situation grows more complicated, but also more solid, when a horrible murder with heinous implications comes across their joint jurisdictions. From there, we are taken on a fine mystery, adventure, romance, and deep excursion into what it means to be a Mormon--and what it means to be excommunicated.

This one is a wow from the start because James Buchanan takes us deep into some parts of the Mormon religion and culture that most of us have never heard about. It's neither damning nor praiseworthy in detailed description. But Deputy Joe, that hunk on the cover, is deeply, deeply religious in many respects and we come to understand why, and how Kabe manages to get him to confront himself over it.

The mystery is terrific, the supporting characters real, and the preparations for and the actual happening of their wedding--under hugely funny and not well-known circumstances--will warm your heart and keep the fire burning. Bravo!

This has to be one of my all time favourite series. I've loved watching Deputy Joe and Kabe as they met and grew into a brilliant couple while really developing as individuals. I've reread the series a number of times and I will reread it again.
This latest and possibly last book in the series is a great addition and brings some closure to this wonderful couple.
I love the writing style and the storyline is one which kept me reading.
I highly recommend the Deputy Joe series.

In general, I don't enjoy books with heavy religious themes, but this series is one of the few exceptions. I just love these guys.

What's up with the typos and editing issues, though? I tend to forgive a few typos in a self-published book, but isn't this book published by an actual publisher? And then, is it worse or better when the book isn't self-published but still has errors in it? Unprofessional.

dont miss this series

Joe and Kabe continue to live and love together.... negotiating how that works with careers, friends, colleagues and family in a traditional LDS area isnt always easy. Finding a murderer is now a job they can collaborate on, adding another layer of complexity to their relationship. But after thinking he would be alone all his life, Joe is getting a handle on this boyfriend thing. Partner thing.. husband thing?

I didn't care for this one as much as the others in the series. The editing mistakes were surprising since the previous books didn't contain them. I started skimming towards the end as I lost interest in the huge family tree being laid out.

Glorious finale to the series.....but I hope it's not.

One more taste of Joe and Kabe, so much to learn and feel. Every book is an adventure and I am always carried along in the rush. Very detail orientated but not overwhelming, the setting is amazing and the minds eye is busy picturing every scene. I will be happy to read ten more tales with these guys, but I love the HEA they got here. I really can't recommend this series highly enough and The Family Eternal was so gripping I couldn't put it down til the last page .
