Urvashi's beauty takes King Pururavas' breath away. He is besotted. He forgets his duties as a king and is absent-minded with his wife, Aushinari. Both gods and humans are involved in the dramatic twists and turns of his romance with the charming apsara, who dances for Lord Indra himself. Eventually, stumbling through their highs and lows, King Pururavas and Urvashi finally find their way to everlasting joy.
The illustrations and storytelling are 5/5 However I don't know from which source the story was taken. In the original story Urvashi had to leave Pururava. This one had the happy ending which I loved by the way. It's just another rendition.
This books talks about Urvashi, the apsara. She was married the Pururavas, the mighty king of the Kuru dynasty. They fell in love with each other when the king rescued Urvashi from the demons. I think Pururavas's wife Queen Aushinari got to know that he was having an affair with another woman because he called her Urvashi by mistake. It was clever of Nipunika to find out who the woman was. I feel it was wrong on Urvashi's part to tell everyone that her heart belonged to Pururavas in a play where she was playing the part of Laxmi. The part where Lord Karthikeya transforms Urvashi and all the other ladies into creepers show that he was an extremely short tempered god. I was happy to see that Indra allowed Urvashi to stay with her husband forever. Overall, this was an excellent book.
Like most readers my age, I used to read Amar Chitra Katha as a kid. This particular story was a new read, however, and to be honest, I don't think it ages well.
I am reading it as an adult now and from that POV, it seems too flat, too 2-D. The dialogue made me think of 90's B grade Bollywood movies.
And it's not suitable for kids either. Doesn't give any good message, doesn't make sense.
i used to love this one, i thought an apsara becoming enchanted with a mortal king was wonderfully tragic. and honestly, i didn’t really care about his queen-consort when i was little (and even thought she was interfering! lol). now his celestial liaison irks me a lot, though...? i really don’t understand why his wife suddenly decided to take a vow to accept his lover under the moonlight, whereas two~ pages previous she was angered by his infidelity. it doesn’t make sense to me...
I liked the story, but I'm not sure which source it has been taken from. From the accounts I have read, Urvashi does not return to Pururavas, at least not permanently.
