Chris Berry has already realized many of his dreams by the age of thirty. He’s a qualified marine biologist living in New Jersey and working in New York with a great team of colleagues who feel just as passionately about their conservation work and research as he does. He’s close to his parents, he’s a staunch vegetarian, and he’s been with his boyfriend, Haydn, for nine years.
Haydn is everything Chris isn’t. He’s spoiled, lazy and dishonest. When Chris discovers that his long-term partner has once again cheated on him, Chris decided that enough is finally enough.
He’s dreamed of visiting the Hawaiian island of Makame for as long as he can remember, thanks to it being the home of the rarest turtle on the planet: the Calvert. Chris and his team have researched this elusive creature for many years and are desperately trying to raise funds to head there on a research boat when news breaks that the building of a luxury golf course in Hawaii could destroy the Calvert’s habitat.
Spurred on by his recent breakup and knowing time is of the essence, Chris self-funds the trip of a lifetime to Hawaii alone, hoping to find someone who’ll take him out to Makame, where he might just see the creature he’s spent years dreaming about.
What he never factored into his plans is meeting the gorgeous Elliott Sheaffer, who offers to personally escort Chris to the island of Makame after a chance meeting at the airport. But Chris is suspicious. He knows there’s more to Elliott than the handsome pilot is letting on, but Chris decides he’s lived safely for too long, and decides to take Elliott up on his offer.
But when a storm hits during their journey to Makame, they’re instead pushed so far south that they end up on a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific. Nobody knows they’re there, and supplies quickly run low.
Chris isn’t sure whether he’ll survive the experience, let alone see the Calvert turtle, or eventually get to know Elliott’s secret. The only thing he knows is that he’s stranded on a desert island with the hottest guy he’s ever known, and that danger doesn’t always come from the places you’d most expect…

Jerry Cole is a gay author who lives in California & enjoys writing love stories. Jerry has been writing fiction since he was a child. As a young adult, he worked as a freelance writer in the evenings & on weekends. Jerry started writing gay romance stories several years ago, but initially just for his own entertainment & occasionally sharing stories with his friends. In the summer of 2015 he published his first gay romance short story on Amazon. Overwhelmed by the positive response he decided to quit his “day job” & took up writing gay romance full time. When he’s not writing steamy M/M romance he enjoys globetrotting, watching movies with family and friends, working out, & being dragged down the road by his two Great Danes.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book: a book about love, betrayal and forgiveness. Chris Berry marine biologist living in New Jersey worked with a great team of colleagues who were as passionate about conservation work and research as he did. His parents have continued to encourage their son to go after the dreams he’s had since college and still has instead of staying with a deadbeat boyfriend, Haydn, he’s been with for nine years.
Haydn’s always been a selfish, self-important person and had disappointed Chris many times with being unfaithful to him, but he forgave him every time. When Hayden wanted to do something he’d cried to Chris until he got what he wanted, usually money was involved to do something with his art, which by the way wasn’t that great. Chris had put most of his money into an art exhibition for Haydn which didn’t bother Chris because he loved his boyfriend.
But when Chris came home from a weekend with his parent’s, suspicion began to arise again. Their downstairs roommate came down the stairs from his and Haydn’s apartment in just his underwear. When he went into his and Haydn’s bedroom, Haydn was still in bed naked. Alarms went off in Chris’s head, but Haydn once again smoothed things out between them.
The night of Haydn’s art exhibition he did not received the overflowing of friends to pet his ego. The show was a royal flop, partially due to the art but mostly Haydn had given up at the beginning of the show when he wasn’t flooded with well doers. Chris, the unselfish, caring person he was tried to cheer Haydn up, but as time went by he discovered through a text through Haydn’s phone about his affair.
For nine years Chris has sacrificed his own dreams to fulfill Haydn’s and after catching Haydn again having another affair with whom else but their downstairs roommate. Chris was brave enough to finally call it quits for good! Thank goodness because I didn’t like Haydn one bit.
Chris has dreamed of going to the Hawaiian Island of Makame since forever to study the Calvert turtle. Makame is supposed to be the home for this rarest turtle on the planet. And with the publicity about a golf course to be built on the Island his team went into overdrive in meetings to figure what to do.
It seemed wise to send someone down to hopefully find and study the turtle before construction started next year and their habitat was destroyed. They couldn’t change the President of the US’s mind that was for sure. So it was decided for Chris to go. First, Chris needed to get away for awhile after his breakup with Haydn and because he was self funding the trip.
This was the real exciting part of the book. A stranger offered Chris a ride to his rented house because there were no taxi’s to be found. The stranger, Elliott bought Chris breakfast and got along great conversation Chris poured his heart out about his love for the Calvert turtle and way he was there.
It wasn’t until they reached Chris’s rental that Elliott offered to take Chris to the island, all he had to do was pay for the gas. So, Chris would call Elliott when the time was right.
Later Chris and Elliott made their arrangements then packed up everything needed for the trip in the plane. Even though there was a storm brewing it was way above were they would be flying and Elliott determined it would be safe. They headed out, but unexpectedly the storm was closer than originally thought and the wind pushed the small plane to the south away from Makame Island.
Lightening struck one wing and the plane when down. Elliott did a great landing and hurried to set up the tent on the beach for the night and get their supplies and them inside. The next day Elliott had them move the tent under the trees to protect the tent from the wind and rain. They were stranded on an unknown island alone.
I loved the writing that built Chris’s and Elliott’s relationship and trust. Hmm, the sex scenes were perfect and Elliott was the perfect gentleman. Elliott was everything Chris had wanted in a man to be in a relationship as Chris was to Elliott. The excitement and enthusiasm from Chris was contagious.
In the beginning Chris had reservations about Elliott’s character when he discovered a gun in the glove compartment after the police stopped them when Chris had first met Elliott, plus the police knew him by name. All of that went out of his head when he started to trust the man and was falling for him.
Then there was betrayal Chris discovered in the plane that lead to Chris hating Elliott. They were rescued shortly after that and were big in the news for a long time. Chris stopped giving any public appearances and wanted to be left alone. He missed Elliott deeply. Had he made a mistake?
Well, Elliott comes through for Chris and the love he had for the man and what he did for Chris’s passion publicly set him off to Hawaii to find Elliott. It’s a beautiful ending. I loved the book and I’m sure others would too.

It's been a while since I read a Jerry Cole book, so I was excited to get back into the habit of reading his books once again. "Finding Paradise" was such a great story and it certainly did not disappoint. I found myself intrigued by how much research went into this one - I certainly don't know a whole lot about marine life and had to Google a lot of things that piqued my curiosity while reading.
Chris is a marine biologist living in NY with his pretty terrible boyfriend. Things go bad and they break things off, so now Chris just wants to get away from all the loneliness and heartache he's left with.
His team is studying the Calvert turtle. It's thought to perhaps be extinct now since no one has seen one in a long time. The turtle was first spotted on a remote Hawaiian island by a man who was probably just trying to smuggle them back to the UK in hopes of selling on the black market (he managed to get 50 of them back, but they all died). So now they're trying to get enough funding to head to Hawaii and search for the turtle once again. Their timeline is bumped up though when the president wants to build a golf resort on the island and they're worried it may kill off what is left of the turtles. Chris heads off to Hawaii to find this elusive turtle.
When leaving the airport, Chris runs into Elliot, a pilot on the island and a hot one at that. Elliot agrees to transport Chris to the island, but on their way there, they get blown off course by a storm and stranded on a deserted island.
They spend their time staying alive, exploring the marine life and connecting in a more intimate way. They're really cute together, but of course things go south towards the end and it leaves Chris once again heartbroken. They get their HEA, as expected and it's really sweet when they kiss and make up.
My only complaint is that there was no epilogue. I really wanted to see what Chris & Elliot were up to after reconnecting (Did Chris move to Hawaii? What was Elliot doing for a job now?)

3.5 stars I'm sorry to be a downer but I just couldn't get into the writing. The storyline intrigued me but I was never truly immersed in the book. My rating has nothing to do with the quality of the book, though. The research for the scientific parts seemed well-done. At least, as far as I can tell. I'm not a marine biologist, but it sounded believable. Same goes for anything to do with Hawaii, the plane and their survival on the island. I hate it when I get thrown out of a story because things feel off or don't make sense. But that was not the case here. Everything felt pretty authentic.
So, in general, I enjoyed the story. I also liked the MC, Chris. He was sweet, honest, forgiving and passionate about his work, animals and the environment. Elliott, on the other hand, was pretty much an enigma to me for most of the book. Their romance only took place in the second half of the book, so that, too, felt underdeveloped and rushed. I couldn't really buy into it. The portrayal of the characters in general was a bit weak. I didn't get a real sense for any of them, other than Chris.
What mainly bothered me, though, was that the pacing felt off. Because of that, the book seemed choppy and unbalanced. Some scenes were described in too great detail, down to how people did things. And then other parts were told in just a few sentences and felt completely rushed. For instance, the whole first chapter when Chris is visiting with his parents, felt much too drawn-out. But his decision to take a sabbatical and go to Hawaii is totally glossed over. We don't see any of the preparations nor are his thoughts and feelings about it truly explained. He decides to go (in a month or so) and the next thing we know, he's at the airport. It left me somewhat disconnected from the story at times. And it didn't help that sometimes the writing felt also a bit too clinical.
Despite all this, I liked the story. I just wish, parts of it were written differently. So, this is obviously a case of "It's me, not the book". Others might find no fault with the writing at all. Point in case, I like the wacky and over-the-top humor of TJ Klune and Alice Winters while lots of people can't stand it.
This was my first book by this author and while he has lots of books with very intriguing plots out, I'm a little reluctant to start another one. I might, though, just to see if I like them better and because some of the stories sound really interesting.
This was a really fine book by the author. Chris is a scientist with several degrees on the environment and animal biology. His team is trying to save a rare and thought extinct turtle on one of the small islands off of the Hawaiian Islands. Much is going on in his life including a lying cheating boyfriend. Taking some of his money he travels to Hawaii and finds out it is not as easy as he and his group thought it was to get to the Makame Island. Convinced by a pilot he meets at the airport he embarks on an adventure of a lifetime. Storms, being blown off course, finding what he is looking for and then loosing it, he is left again alone and despondent, because of Elliott and who he is and not being able to jump right in and same their beloved turtles. Don't despair my fellow readers, this adventuresome story has an HEA and I would highly recommend this story to anyone who loves the ocean, adventure and angst and HEAs. I voluntarily read and reviewed this ARC book
This is a beautiful story set in the Hawaiian islands. Chris a marine biologist and Elliot a local pilot meet and share an adventure. Chris is a sweet person whereas Elliot is more worldly and elusive. Looking for an endangered turtle the two are thrown together. This story is exciting, romantic and emotional. The characters are well written and draw you into their tale. The island setting is wonderful and I could imagine how it looked and see all the creatures of the sea. Jerry Cole's description and the way he writes takes you within the book to discover new places and explore the ocean's ecosystem. Once I started reading this book I didn't want to put it down. I highly recommend this book and it deserves the 5*. I received a free advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest & unbiased review.
I loved that Elliott wasn't a perfect guy (in a different way than Haydn was.) Haydn was just a superficial, selfish jerk who took advantage of Chris.
I wished Chris had 'wised' up to Haydn earlier, though it's hard to give up on love. I liked how he found out the truth about Haydn. A lover walking in on another cheating has been over used and the text messages are perfect in our day and age.
All the background information you included regarding the turtles, the coral as a living organism, the danger of exposure, and conservationists versus naturalists was great.
The incident with the airplane was perfect as was the ending. I liked the low key admittance of sorrow on both their parts. The poster at the diner was great! Loved it!
MM. Chris wants to see the best in everyone around him, including his long term boyfriend whom continually takes advantage of him and cheats on him. He overlooks the indiscretions and terrible behavior because he has been with him for nine years and he enjoys his body. Even traveling to Hawaii does not appear to break his cycle of thinking until he makes a conscious decision to focus on what he needs. It is difficult to not let his ex's behavior influence his decisions on other men or entering a new relationship. Explicit. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
This book started of a bit slow for me and didn't grab my immediate interest, but I'm so glad that I kept up with it because I ended up absolutely loving Chris and Elliot.
I loved how everything that wee knew about Elliot was filtered through Chris' perceptions - I was sure that I had Elliot figured out and it turned out to be exactly the misdirection that the author was setting up. When authors do this well, the surprise is always the best part of reading for me.
I could not put this book down I mean it drew me in the minute I started reading Chris relationship with Hadyn was toxic and Chris put with him far to long leaving him was the best thing he did. Then he met Elliott once he got to Hawaii to explore a rare turtle which was exciting so to see the joy and happiness on Chris face brought happiness to me and then Elliott secret comes out and broke my heart after everything that had happen too see these to a part broke my heart but end the end love conquers all
Chris needs to get away from his cheating boyfriend Haydn and sees going to work on saving the rare species of turtle as way of doing it. Short of cash when Elliot Sheaffer offers him a flight in his plane, he jumps at the chance. But Elliot has a secret. When their plane is hit by a storm they crash land on an island hundreds of miles off course and they have to fight their attraction to each other as well as fight to decide. What happens when Elliot's secret comes out?
I liked the book and almost finished it in one go. The begining was a bit slow but once I got in to it I could not put the book down. It even got me to search for the elusive animal on the Internet. Very interesting. I read a complimentary Advanced Reader Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest and unbiased review.
My first Jerry Cole book. Quite enjoyable actually. Well written - easy flowing style. Nice, believable story line. I like the way Mr. Cole tells the story, there is some 'turtle'-based educational content. The plot develops rapidly and situations are not developed in such a way as to bog down and take away from the pleasure of learning 'what's gonna happen to them now'... and I like that.
this was adorable and sweet.. i really liked it and the characters were so sweet and amazing.. and the two coming together was perfect.. it was bad and good all at one time. i lovd it and i am so glad i got too review it
This was another great book by Jerry Cole. It drew me in from the very first page and I couldn't put it down. I absolutely loved Chris and Elliot and I didn't want their story to end. Loved it!
