Ik volg de auteur sinds enige tijd nadat ik bij een vriendin het boek Moordspel geleend had. Dat boek pakte me vanaf het begin, door zijn sterke karakters en originele insteek. Nadien las ik stuk voor stuk haar andere boeken, die me telkens weer grepen. Maar het was vooral Heart-Beat, haar Engelse debuut, dat me greep. Ik heb het boek drie keer gelezen intussen en ook de Nederlandse versie vorige week gekocht en in één ruk uitgelezen. Ik kan alleen maar zeggen dat dit boek een van de weinige is die me zo grijpen en vasthouden. Hart-Slag/Heart-Beat is een geweldig verhaal, met twee personages waar ik verliefd op werd. Laat je niet vangen: dit is een zogenaamde Young Adult, maar het boek zal jong en oud boeien, net omwille van zijn emotionele thema.
Het verhaal gaat over het gedwongen afscheid tussen twee beste vrienden, maar is ook gespekt met humor, spanning en avontuur. Ik heb zelden zo meegeleefd met twee jonge mensen en hoe zij hun vriendschap beleven. Hart-Slag/Heart-Beat is een must read, over ziekte, emotie, vriendschap en het beleven van momenten die je nooit zou beleven als je niet plots voor het einde van je leven staat. Een heerlijk boek dat ik nog dikwijls terug zal lezen.

"Als hij van me weggenomen wordt, kan ik eenvoudigweg niet verder. Hoe kan je blijven leven wanneer je hart in stukken breekt?" ~ p59.
Wauw, wat een prachtig verhaal! Ik heb de laatste 50 pagina's met natte wangen gelezen... dit verhaal gaat mij voorlopig niet meer loslaten.
"Een moment lang vergeet ik dat ik stervende ben, zodat ik me kan concentreren op het hier en nu. Doodgaan is nu niet belangrijk." ~ p270.
Hart-Slag verteld het verhaal van Sam en Jasper, elk vanuit hun eigen perspectief in afwisselende hoofdstukken. De twee hartsvrienden krijgen een flinke klap te verwerken wanneer Jasper te horen krijgt dat hij een tumor in zijn hart heeft. Van weken blijkt zelfs al geen sprake meer, en hij smeekt Sam om hem te helpen zijn laatste wens te vervullen: zingen voor een groot publiek. Sam zet alles op alles om haar beste vriend nog een keer gelukkig te zien, en samen laten ze alles achter om dit voor hem waar te maken, terwijl ze beide worstelen met hun verdriet en het onvermijdelijke afscheid.
Ik ben nog nooit zo snel door 470 pagina's gevlogen. Vanaf de eerste pagina weet de auteur je vast te grijpen met haar verhaal, en ze laat je niet meer los. Tot je uiteindelijk met een gescheurd hart en een gezicht vol tranen het boek sluit en een keer flink zucht. Wat een enorm mooi verhaal was dit. Je ziet alle ingredienten op tafel liggen, en toch weet het verhaal je compleet uit je sokken te blazen. De personages zo puur en autentiek. De emoties zo oprecht en soms so rauw. Elk detail kloppend, als een oneindig patroon. Dit boek wil je door al je vriendinnen laten lezen, al is het alleen maar omdat je er over wilt praten. En die zelfde vriendinnen wil je even extra knuffel geven, plotseling bewust hoe fragiel een leven kan zijn en hoeveel verdriet je zou hebben als ze weg zouden vallen. Dit verhaal laat je beseffen dat je alles uit het leven moet halen, elke dag weer. En hoe mooi is het als je dat als auteur met je schrijven kan bereiken.
"Soms moet je gewoonweg aanvaarden dat bepaalde gebeurtenissen in je leven vanaf het begin bedoeld waren om plaats te vinden." ~ p362.
Joanne Carlton is wat mij betreft dubbel en dwars geslaagd met het veroveren van mijn Hart(-Slag). Werkelijk een prachtig verhaal, zo puur en kwetsbaar. Deze komt absoluut op mijn favorieten lijst. Een dikke 5 sterren, zonder twijfel!

Het verhaal
“Hart-Slag” gaat over Sam en Jasper, die hartsvrienden zijn en door een dramatische gebeurtenis enkel dichter naar elkaar zijn toegegroeid, zonder dat er daarom per sé een relatie uit groeit. Ze hebben allebei hun dromen, maar durven ze niet altijd even goed na te jagen.
Totdat Jasper verschrikkelijk nieuws te verwerken krijgt. Hij heeft niet meer lang te leven. Als hij zijn dromen nog wil realiseren, moet hij het nú doen. Zo wil hij graag voor een publiek zingen en zijn talent tonen. En daar kan Sam hem bij helpen.
Sam kent Jaspers geheim en grote droom, en is maar wat blij om hem te helpen. Maar daarvoor moeten ze alles en iedereen achterlaten om Jaspers droom te verwezenlijken. En ze moeten zich voorbereiden op het afscheid nemen.
Zal het hen lukken?
Wat vond ik ervan?
Het verhaal steekt sterk in elkaar. We maken kennis met Jasper, die zijn best doet om aan zijn vaders verwachtingen te voldoen, maar zelf eigenlijk andere dromen heeft.
Daarnaast maken we kennis met Sam, Jaspers beste vriendin. Ze delen alles met elkaar, ze zijn er voor elkaar, …
De personages worden goed uitgediept in dit boek. Je weet vrijwel meteen wat de achtergrond van het personage is, waarom hij/zij op een bepaalde manier reageert, wat hen bezighoudt, … Dat is wel aangenaam. Je begrijpt hun reacties beter hierdoor.
Ook de nevenpersonages zijn goed uitgediept, wie op welke manier verwant is met het personage, wat ze doen, waarom ze dat doen, …
Daarnaast zijn er ook verschillende interessante plottwists in het verhaal. Net als je denkt hoe het prachtige verhaal van vriendschap verdergaat, verrast Joanne Carlton je weer met een plottwist. Dit maakt het hele verhaal toch wel een pageturner. Je wilt namelijk weten hoe het verhaal verdergaat.
Uiteraard is het wel een triest verhaal, maar de vriendschap die hier verteld wordt, is zo prachtig! De reis die deze personages maken is nét zo prachtig. Net zoals de Engelstalige versie doet het je soms over je eigen leven nadenken. Zeker wanneer er over “bucketlists” wordt gesproken.
Dit boek moet je zeker volledig uitlezen, want Joanne Carlton weet je steeds opnieuw te verrassen en er steken prachtige boodschappen in het verhaal, voor de goede verstaanders!
En de boodschappen die erachter steken, maken het net zo mooi. De boodschappen die ik hieruit heb gehaald zijn:
* Wil je iets doen, doe het dan nu
* Volg je dromen, niets is te gek
* Je bent nooit alleen op de wereld, ook al denk je dat soms, zie je alleen nog maar duisternis, zie je het niet meer zitten, … Er is altijd wel iemand voor je, ook al lijkt het soms moeilijk.
* Geef nooit op!
* Geniet van het leven, zoveel mogelijk. Straks is het misschien te laat.
De vorm
Toen ik het boek “Hart-Slag” uitpakte, viel me onmiddellijk op hoeveel dikker het boek is geworden dan “Heart-Beat”. Een verklaring hiervoor is dat er een ander lettertype werd gebruikt, de puntgrootte lijkt ook eentje hoger te zijn, en het boek is ook een beetje kleiner dan zijn Engelstalige broertje. Dat is uiteraard niet storend.
Het tweede wat me opvalt is de prachtige cover, die ook, net als “Heart-Beat”, duidelijk gelinkt is aan de flaptekst en de inhoud. Dit is voor mij ook een pluspunt. Het schept namelijk een sfeer en een idee waaraan je je mag verwachten.
“Don’t judge a book by its cover” wordt heel vaak gezegd. Toch is dat, de titel én de flaptekst het eerste waar ik op afga als ik een boek koop/kies. Met andere woorden, in de boekhandel zou ik ook meteen dit boek hebben opgenomen om nader te bekijken, en gekocht hebben.

Heartbeat
Where shall I begin? The story is beautifully constructed and seems to have been taken out of life. It has been written so lifelike and emotionally. Right from the start you are sucked into the story of 2 young people who are friends. Their lives are turned upside down by a tumor, a degrading disease in one of them. They do everything and support each other through thick and thin. Jasper has a wish and wants to make it true in his last days here on earth. The story reads smoothly but is particularly intense. You become overwhelmed with emotions while reading. You live with the characters. The crop was present in the throat several times, the tears came further and eventually I really felt pain in the chest of sympathy.
This is a book that I will read several times and is my favorite book so far. This story brings us to a moment for thought, namely: how quickly can life be taken away from you? Live every day and enjoy it, talk to your fellow man, do not postpone what is still possible today. Say "I love you" to the people you really love, because every moment is worth gold in your life. If you read this book, you know why. A big compliment to Joanne Carlton (Sandra, this surpasses everything!). Thank you for this beautiful lesson in life! X

Terminale keuze
Hartpatiënt wordt opgegeven. In de luttele tijd die nog rest probeert jeugdvriendin zijn diepste wens te vervullen.
De achttienjarige Jasper Stevens is eerstejaars student architectuur. De studie valt hem eigenlijk te zwaar. Hij tobt ook nog met schuldgevoelens ten aanzien van zijn vader. Die is een excellent architect en hoopt dat zijn zoon ooit zijn architectenbureau zal overnemen. Het wordt Jasper aan het einde van het eerste semester duidelijk dat hij niet de architect zal worden waarop zijn vader hoopt.
Om in de ogen van zijn vader niet helemaal te falen wijdt Jasper zich naast zijn studie aan de basketbalsport. Zijn vader was immers ook een zeer verdienstelijk basketballer. Tijdens een wedstrijd gaat het mis. Jasper krijgt een hartinfarct. Hij wordt opgenomen.
Sam is Jaspers onafscheidelijke jeugdvriendin. Ze is hoogbegaafd en heeft een fotografische geheugen. Zij beschikt binnen het terrein van het autisme over bijzondere talenten. Daarom was ze in staat met zestien jaar aan dezelfde universiteit als Jasper met een studie te beginnen. Beiden hebben dagelijks contact en zoeken steun bij elkaar in hun tamelijk eenzame bestaan als eerstejaars. Wanneer Jasper in het ziekenhuis arriveert is het daarom niet verwonderlijk dat hij Sam als eerste waarschuwt. Zij spoedt zich naar het ziekenhuis.
Uiteraard wordt Jasper onderworpen aan een diepgaand medisch onderzoek. De diagnose is niet best. Jasper blijkt in zijn hart een niet operabele tumor te hebben en zal niet veel dagen meer te leven hebben. Sam is doortastend en wil Jaspers innigste wens, een muzikaal optreden voor groot publiek, in vervulling doen gaan. Ze bedenkt daarvoor een spectaculair plan.

Joanne Carlton is het Engelse pseudoniem van de veelzijdige Vlaamse auteur Sandra J. Paul (1972), bekend om haar Young Adultboeken en thrillers. Ze schreef dit boek oorspronkelijk in het Engels (Heart-Beat) en verzorgde zelf de vertaling in het Nederlands.
Dit boek is een psychologische Young Adult roman. De lezer zal vergeefs zoeken naar ingrediënten als seks, erotiek, godsdienst, genotsmiddelen of allerhande thrillerachtige aspecten. Alles is erop gericht Jasper in de laatste dagen van zijn leven af te helpen van zijn pathologische loyaliteit jegens zijn vader. Zijn autistische vriendin Sam, met wie hij een puur platonische verhouding heeft, zet zich daarvoor volledig in.
Door dit alles te plaatsen in een hedendaagse muzikale scene en de verhaaltrant laagdrempelig te houden zal deze roman ongetwijfeld in de smaak vallen bij de beoogde jonge doelgroep. Die moet wel rekening houden met typisch Vlaams taalgebruik dat bij de Nederlandse lezer soms afstandelijk en een enkele keer onbegrijpelijk kan overkomen. Zo is gegeerd Vlaamse standaardtaal, maar geen Nederlander zal weten dat er begeerd mee wordt bedoeld.
Niettemin is deze roman bijzonder lezenswaardig en wellicht onthullend omdat pathologische loyaliteit jegens ouders nu eenmaal gemakkelijk aanleiding geeft tot depressief gedrag.

Dit boek is een psychologische Young Adult roman. De lezer zal vergeefs zoeken naar ingrediënten als seks, erotiek, godsdienst, genotsmiddelen of allerhande thrillerachtige aspecten. Alles is erop gericht Jasper in de laatste dagen van zijn leven af te helpen van zijn pathologische loyaliteit jegens zijn vader. Zijn autistische vriendin Sam, met wie hij een puur platonische verhouding heeft, zet zich daarvoor volledig in.
Door dit alles te plaatsen in een hedendaagse muzikale scene en de verhaaltrant laagdrempelig te houden zal deze roman ongetwijfeld in de smaak vallen bij de beoogde jonge doelgroep. Die moet wel rekening houden met typisch Vlaams taalgebruik dat bij de Nederlandse lezer soms afstandelijk en een enkele keer onbegrijpelijk kan overkomen. Zo is gegeerd Vlaamse standaardtaal, maar geen Nederlander zal weten dat er begeerd mee wordt bedoeld.
Niettemin is deze roman bijzonder lezenswaardig en wellicht onthullend omdat pathologische loyaliteit jegens ouders nu eenmaal gemakkelijk aanleiding geeft tot depressief gedrag.

Oké. Wauw. Dat was me het boek wel. De eerste helft vond ik niet echt goed: ik ergerde me enorm aan de te Vlaamse en soms ook te letterlijk uit het Engels vertaalde schrijfstijl, waardoor alles enorm langdradig en afstandelijk was. De personages vond ik bovendien ook niet zo: té veel zelfmedelijden en schuldgevoel en wegcijfering en alles. Maar... vanaf de helft werd het zó veel beter en boeiender: er kwam meer vaart in en de thema’s, vooral omtrent het najagen van je dromen waarvoor het eigenlijk nooit te laat is, gingen me erg aanspreken. Uiteindelijk was het echter de plottwist tegen het einde die ik echt waanzinnig goed vond en waardoor alles eigenlijk heel treffend is en echt klopt. Het onderwerp is zeer aangrijpend, maar helaas vond ik het boek wat langdradig. Er zat veel herhaling in en de hoofdstukken zijn vrij lang.

I hadn't heard from this author before, which is logical since this is her debut novel, but we met on Facebook and her story fascinated me. Needless to say I was very, very impressed.
I received a bit of background reading the excerpt and the premise of the book, so I knew it was going to be a sad one, as the topic is obviously quite heavy. I was mentally prepared for it: the author was really clear about that when we spoke.
When I started reading the book and came to the hard parts, I honestly have to admit I was quite emotional. This book tugs at your heartstrings. Yet, at the same time, there is humor in it, along with some very funny parts , tension and a lot of characterization. The author is very skilled at portraying the two main characters, but she also spent a great deal of attention to the secondary characters.
I was impressed with the speed of the story and the way she skilfully moved from heartache to the singing parts and back.
I can't give you a lot of details on this book without spoiling it, but I can tell you it holds surprises and shocks and had me bawling at the end.
Definitely going to reread it.

This book made me laugh, cry and then cry some more. I loved it, cannot put it any other way than that. It was so good. Without spoiling too much, I was surprised where I didn't expect it and the ending was just so honest and heartfelt it made me want to grab the book for a second time to read it again. A compelling, warm and beautiful story. So glad I found it.

Ik geef eerlijk toe dat dit boek me sterk geraakt heeft, wat me zelden of nooit gebeurt. Ik ben erin getuimeld op basis van de achterflap tekst en met de gedachte in mijn achterhoofd dat ik drie jaar geleden mijn vader heb verloren, dus ik was razend nieuwsgierig.
Het feit dat Joanne Carlton dit boek schreef na het overlijden van haar eigen familieleden, voel je op een of andere manier in dit boek. Van de relaties tussen de hoofdpersonages en hun zorg voor elkaar, tot het fanatieke toe zelfs, tot de keuze van de muziek en de diepgang achter die keuzes. Ik vermoed dat elk nummer op een of andere manier iets te maken heeft gehad met haar familie. De scènes waarin het over de nakende dood gaat, zijn erg gevoelig en raken oprecht.
Wat enorm verfrissend was aan dit boek was dat er geen romantiek in zat. Geen plotse relaties tussen de twee hoofdpersonages, geen zoenen, geen verliefdheid, maar wél liefde die eerlijk en puur is. Een jongen en een meisje kunnen elkaar graag zien zonder dat ze verliefd zijn en dat maakt het net zo mooi. Het verhaal gaat over pure en ontroerende vriendschap, wat ook wordt gezegd op de achterflap. Wat Sam en Jasper voor elkaar doen, daar kan een mens enkel maar van dromen. Hoe die karakters op elkaar inspelen en om elkaar geven, maakt het verhaal des te mooier.
Hart-Slag is niet enkel een Young Adult, het is een boek dat jong en oud zal beroeren, omdat het zo ongelofelijk prachtig geschreven is en een fantastisch verhaal is dat je tot de allerlaatste letter blijft boeien. De wedstrijd is spannend, de race tegen de tijd is haast tastbaar. Haal je zakdoeken maar boven, maar eindig ook het boek met de glimlach rond de lippen, want het is zo mooi en het laat prachtige boodschappen na.

My opinion
In Moordspel the author already used nice quotes at the start of new chapters, she did that in this book too. The story is divided into the number of days in which the story occurs and every day starts with a new, beautiful and fitting quote, like for example this one from the lyrics by Eminem:
You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow;
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime.
When I started reading this book I had no idea what to expect really. I normally read thrillers and Young Adult thrillers, so this was a little bit out of my comfort zone. The subject is very serious; I have lost several people to cancer in my family so this was very confronting. But my lord, what a story. Even though I had to get used to reading in English, it was no problem. There is a lot of depth in the story, multiple layers are built on top of each other and you get sucked into the moment of the story.
The story of Jasper is well worked out and the character is described so real that you crawl into his skin, and feel his pain and sorrow. De fear, insecurity and his frustration are tangible and drip from the pages. How horrible it is to hear, as an 18-year-old, that you have only a few days left?
Also, Sam is such a powerful character. She doesn’t let anything disconcert her easily and she goes after what she wants. A 16-year-old girl with so much strength and such a strong will, unbelievably smart and with so much grief already in her young life. A beautifully written, well developed character.
"What would you do, Max? If you knew you only had a couple of days left to live,
how would you spend them?"
And of course there is a small paranormal side to this story. In this case it’s Sam who has predictive dreams. And they come true as well.
Just when you are ready to say goodbye to Jasper, the story takes a turn. A turn I didn’t see coming and it upset me, because the story turns out to be completely different from what you thought it was.
In this book unconditional friendship is the number one subject. Jasper and Sam don’t care about how others think of the other, although they do have issues with themselves. But they are always there for each other, ready to stand up for each other. But to be there for one another, to carry the pain and sadness that comes with goodbyes, is difficult.
Heart-Beat is a touching story that crawls underneath your skin and into your soul and it won't let you go. Besides the drama and the sadness, there are these beautiful characters who would do anything for one another, there is no doubt about that. Sandra had warned me to have some tissues nearby while reading this book. Well, I sure needed them the last couple of chapters.
So touching, so recognizable, so very very sad.

Ik had de Engelse versie van dit boek enige tijd geleden al gelezen, maar ik kon het me niet laten om ook de Nederlandstalige versie aan te schaffen en het verhaal te herlezen. Het pakte me nog sterker dan in de Engelse versie, vanaf het eerste woord tot het laatste, ook al wist ik uiteraard wat er ging gebeuren.
Ik kan Hart-Slag niet genoeg aanbevelen. Het gaat over een ernstig onderwerp en dat schrikt misschien mensen af, maar dat hoeft helemaal niet. De manier waarop Sam en Jasper, de hoofdpersonages, omgaan met hun verdriet en zich ijzersterk door het trauma een weg banen, grijpt me telkens weer bij de keel. Dit verhaal bevat zoveel elementen dat het te moeilijk wordt om die allemaal samen te vatten hier, dus ik kan enkel zeggen: lees dit boek. Je gaat het je niet beklagen! Dit is geen doorsnee Young Adult, daarvoor is het thema te aangrijpend. Je leeft helemaal mee met de hoofdpersonages en je voelt hun verdriet, hun angst en hun vriendschap en liefde voor elkaar.

Meestal lees ik nooit een vertaling nadat ik het origineel heb gelezen. Maar normaal is de auteur Engels en wordt de vertaling door een persoon die ver van het boek afstaat. In dit geval bracht Sandra J Paul onder de naam Joanne Carlton het boek Heart Beat uit. Haar Engels debuut en meest persoonlijke verhaal tot nu. De eerste keer dat ik dit verhaal las vond ik het al een kunstwerk. Het verhaal draait om Sam en Jasper. Sam is een medisch student en van Jasper leeft het leven dat van hem verwacht wordt. Dit verandert als Jasper tijdens een basketbalwedstrijd een hartaanval krijgt. Sam besluit haar beste vriend zijn grootste wens in vervulling te laten gaan. Met alle gevolgen van dien.
De eerste keer dat ik dit boek las was ik al onder de indruk. Bij het herlezen groeide mijn waardering voor het boek nog meer. Het verhaal was erg mooi opgebouwd. De motivatie van de personages ook erg puur. In het begin moet je de personages goed leren kennen en die kans krijg je ook. Hierna gaat het verhaal vrij strak. Vooral achter de schermen bij een idols achtig programma is mooi weergegeven. Alsof de auteur er zelf is geweest.
Hart Slag is duidelijk een verhaal met meerdere lagen. Voor mij kwamen die na het lezen van de vertaling naar boven. Vooral de cameo van Hamley is mooi getimed. Hart Slag is een boek dat je nog grijpt zelfs na het Epiloog. Joanne heeft haar hart en ziel op papier gezet en dat heet nu Hart Slag. Een van de beste boeken die ik dit jaar heb gelezen. P.s. die piano versie van de Streets of Philadelphia had ik graag in het echt gehoord.

Not easy to write a review without adding spoilers, so I'll be careful, but I wanted to write one because this book is so good and I can't stop thinking about it.
Sam and Jasper have been best friends after tragedy strikes when they are children. Because of their shared grief, they cling to each other and both soon feel that their lives will be incomplete without the other one in it. They bicker like siblings and best friends, but it's made pretty clear they are not a couple. In many ways, it is a love story though, without the actual relationship.
Jasper collapses and is diagnosed with a tumor in his heart, leaving them devastated. Instead of wasting away in a hospital bed, they decide together to take off and spend Jasper's last days living the life he never got the chance to lead. Jasper has always been doing things for other people, mostly to please his parents, but never dared to do something for himself, which he now regrets.
So, with only a couple of days left, they participate in a huge undertaking, a singing contest that takes place right before Christmas, where Jasper will be able to live his dream, if only once. Helped by some old friends of Sam's mother, Jasper puts everything he has in the contest. That way, he doesn't have to think about all that he's going to lose when he dies and the family he left behind.
My opinion: I've previously read one of the other books of this author in Dutch which she writes under a different alias and she blew me away with that one. Her others are on my list to read soon. When I read the premise of this book, i knew this would be totally different and was hesitant to read it first because of the heavy subject (illness and death). I'm so glad I read it! I have to say that this story blew me away even more.
From the very first chapters, I was rooting for Jasper and Sam. The story is told in their POV's, varying between the chapters and she managed to give them both their distinct voice in such a way that it is absolutely fitting and believable. You live and sympathize with poor Jasper, just like you feel sorry for Sam for seeing her best friend like that.
The story is very character-driven. The singing contest actually perfectly describes how they are both feeling throughout the story and there are some pretty tense moments in those chapters, but in the end, it's all about the two of them and the choices they've made to get to the point where they ultimately wind up.
I loved it. Simply, simply loved it. And I cried. A lot.
If you love books that make you think about friendship, care and human relationships that also brings you characters that you really get to like and love, this is the one you have to read. It was absolutely stunning.

When I read the premise of this book, i knew this would be totally different and was hesitant to read it first because of the heavy subject (illness and death). I'm so glad I read it! I have to say that this story blew me away even more.
From the very first chapters, I was rooting for Jasper and Sam. The story is told in their POV's, varying between the chapters and she managed to give them both their distinct voice in such a way that it is absolutely fitting and believable. You live and sympathize with poor Jasper, just like you feel sorry for Sam for seeing her best friend like that.
The story is very character-driven. The singing contest actually perfectly describes how they are both feeling throughout the story and there are some pretty tense moments in those chapters, but in the end, it's all about the two of them and the choices they've made to get to the point where they ultimately wind up.
I loved it. Simply, simply loved it. And I cried. A lot.
If you love books that make you think about friendship, care and human relationships that also brings you characters that you really get to like and love, this is the one you have to read. It was absolutely stunning.

Recently, I read this Young Adult book, for the first time in English from this amazing author!
What is Heart-Beat about?
The book is about 2 good friends, a boy (Jasper, 18) and a girl (Sam, 16). Sam is a bit weird, while Jasper could get anything he wants. And he doesn't like it. He wants to earn things instead of getting it the easy way. And he goes far for that. Too far at an important basketball game.
In the hospital, Jasper gets told that there is a tumor growing inside his heart and that it will consume him. He doesn't have much time anymore.
Sam convinces him to pursue his dreams, such as singing in front of a crowd. Together, they go to Londen, where Jasper participates for a singing contest. As the contest goes on, Jasper's condition gets more worse. He'll have to choose between pursuing his dream and his family.
Sam knows she'll have to say goodbye to Jasper soon, but she fully supports him.
My thoughts about the book:

I simply love the cover! As a Belgian, it has this typical English look (don't ask me to explain, it just does! XD ). There is a certain atmosphere around this book that makes me want to grab it instantly and read it! The colors are beautiful, and the subtitel sounds mysterious! It even makes me think "What would I do?" After you've read the book, you'll understand the choices for the cover and the subtitle even better!

The story starts with Jasper collapsing during an important basketball game. You get instantly into the story, which is an aspect I love.
The story is also told in first person. Another thing I love, because that way I can more easily get into the story. The narrator changes between chapters though, but that isn't irritating at all. This way, you can again get in the minds and thoughts of the main characters.
There are many nice plot twists in this story. Another one of those books where you thought you knew what is going on, and then it's entirely different. I love it!
The story goes on quickly as it's a real pageturner! Sometimes I had to swallow hard and stop to think. It's a sad "heartfelt" story, and because of the first person perspective, it intensifies that feeling, but again that is not bothering at all. It makes you think about your own dreams and purposees in life.
The characters were very well portrayed. You have a clear image of who Sam and Jasper are, what they do in the (past) life, what they do now, how they got there. That makes the story very credible.
This book makes you think about your life, your dreams and your purposes. At least for me. That life is too short to postpone things. If you wanna do something, do it now while you can.
For all of the reasons above, Heart-Beat from Joanne Carlton is a great book that you must read NOW!!!

I've read most of the books of this author, well at least the ones she wrote in Dutch. I can tell you they are not like this book at all. She usually writes paranormal and thriller books. When I heard about this book online and asked her about it, she said I just had to read it and then tell me how I felt about it.
Well, thank you for that. I bawled my eyes out, pure and simple. This is a no-nonsense book with a sad-happy ending but that doesn't mean it's sad all the way through. In fact, it's exciting, tense and often funny too. Loved the characters, all fleshed out. Loved Jasper and Sam, and Max and Jonathan. Don't want to give away the spoilers, so I have to leave it at that, but I can tell you that I cried with my husband staring at me as if I was nuts.
If you finish the book, read the comment by the author on how this book came to be. I lost my mother a few years ago. This book made me remember the moment we said goodbye. Seriously: read this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It's a great story brilliantly told that will stay with me for many years to come. I laughed, I cried, and I rooted for the protagonists, Sam and Jasper. Their story was told with such sensitivity and the way in which the author portrayed their emotional world, pulled me right into it. I followed the twists and turns with bated breath and was rewarded with a great surprise I didn't see coming. The descriptions of the settings are fantastic - I felt as though I was there and saw the novel playing in my head like a movie. I can't wait to read more stories by this talented author and I cannot recommend this novel highly enough!

Amazing book, I've rarely read a book with so much emotion in the past years. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it aside. I honestly can't fault this debut. The characters are likable and believable, I cried and laughed and cried some more. Somehow, the heavy topic didn't always feel as heavy while reading the book. It has a lot of humor in it, but also so much love and friendship that just radiates off every single page. Highly recommended for people who love beautiful, warm stories about friendship, family and emotional topics.

My personal life has gone through quite some turmoil lately and I've found myself digging into emotional books for quite some time. Some of the books I turned to, hardly felt worth the effort. Others made me weep like a baby. This one had me bawling at the end.
The book was written so vividly, it had me drawn into the world these two main characters found themselves in overnight. I've rarely felt so sorry for two characters as I did for them. A more than well-deserved five stars.

Not your typical "bucket list" story. Without giving anything away, you'll want to follow Sam and Jasper on their journey...the characters will engage you, the story will lead somewhere you didn't anticipate. An emotional and entertaining read. Well done, Joanne!

Wat een hartverscheurend boek. Wat knap van de schrijfster dat ze dit verhaal zo enorm goed op papier heeft gekregen. Menig keer moest ik mijn tranen wegknipperen maar uiteindelijk waren de zakdoeken zeker nodig. Jonge mensen, een terminale ziekte en een droom voor het leven. Joanne Carlton weet het tot een roerend en goed lopend verhaal te brengen, waarin ze ontwikkeling van jonge mensen die geconfronteerd worden met een terminale ziekte heel goed en reëel beschreven heeft. De versie die ik gelezen heb, heeft nog wat taalkundige correcties nodig, maar het verhaal staat als een rock. Ook de liedjes en teksten die aan bod komen passen perfect bij de opbouw en de tragiek in dit boek.
Sam, 16 jaar, heeft door een auto-ongeluk haar ouders en zus verloren. Vanaf de begrafenis is ze bevriend met Jasper, inmiddels 18 jaar. Ze blijken zielsverwanten te zijn en te blijven. Sam vindt het moeilijk om sociale contacten aan te gaan en richt zich vol op haar medische opleiding waar ze met haar hoge intelligentie versneld studeert en een onderzoeksproject af wil ronden. Ze is uiteindelijk terecht gekomen bij goede pleegouders, maar zondert zich af om maar geen binding aan te gaan. Jasper heeft fantastische ouders. Zijn vader is een succesvol architect met een eigen bedrijf en was in zijn jonge jaren een basketbalster. Jasper richt zich op zijn studie tot architect en op een basketbalcarrière om in zijn voetsporen te treden. Hij cijfert zich volledig weg om zijn ouders maar trots te maken. Dan slaat het noodlot toe. Sam valt van de trap en lijkt geveld door een hersenschudding en zware hoofdpijn. Sam zijn hart stopt en hij wordt gereanimeerd. Beiden horen dat Jasper terminaal is en nog maar een week te leven heeft. Jasper verzet zich tegen een ziekbed en Sam richt zich op het realiseren van zijn ultieme droom. Ze vluchten naar Londen, waar Sam het vriendenechtpaar Jonathan en Max kent met medische en muzikale achtergrond. Er blijkt een talentenjacht te starten waar Jasper aan mee mag doen. Wat volgt is een race tegen de klok. Kan Jasper zijn ultieme droom neerzetten of worden de lichamelijke klachten te zwaar en stort hij voor die tijd in?

Noem je nu Joanne of noem je Sandra ? What’s in a name! Deze schrijfster bewijst keer op keer dat ze heel wat verschillende verhalen, stijlen, leeftijden, … aan kan. Wat zou ik graag eens een dag in het hoofd van die dame kijken. Ik denk dat je ’s morgens aankomt in fantasieland en er heel wat gebeurtenissen op je kan laten afkomen, waardoor je ’s avonds uitgeteld in je bed belandt en je dromen je verder laten zweven op je voorbije dag.
Dit boek is geschreven in het Engels door de alter ego van schrijfster Sandra J Paul. En door haarzelf terug vertaald naar het Nederlands. Wat op zich toch wel te bewonderen is. Is het verhaal dan ontstaan in het Engels? Of heeft ze dit eerst in het Engels omgezet? Een vraag die naar een antwoord schreeuwt.
Dit verhaal wordt vanuit de twee hoofdpersonages geschreven, dus ook vanuit een verschillend oogpunt, waardoor je ook een beter begrip krijgt voor de situatie waar de vrienden inkomen. Je kan je zo ook beter gaan inleven in het volledige gebeuren. Je klik met Jasper en Sam gaat naarmate het verhaal vordert ook meer groeien. Precies of je hen dan ook echt kent. Je voelt doorheen de paperback de karakters gewoon groter en sterker worden. Het verhaal is voortgevloeid uit gebeurtenissen die de schrijfster meemaakte en een plaatsje wou geven op papier, wat zij het beste kan. Reële verhalen en gebeurtenissen die ook jou of mij zouden kunnen overkomen, waardoor je nog meer in het verhaal komt. Ik ben geen muziekkenner en ken dus ook geen enkele songtekst. Maar toch kreeg ik tranen in mijn ogen en een krop in mijn keel toen Jasper zijn eerste zinnen op het podium zong. De manier waarop dit fragment beschreven stond, was voor mij op zo’n hoogtepunt dat dit ook bij mij bepaalde gevoelens raakte.
Wat de boeken van de schrijfster ook altijd spannend maakt tot op het eind, is de ommekeer die het verhaal opeens krijgt. Je krijgt niet zomaar een verhaal voor geschoteld, maar je moet eigenlijk het boek op een gans andere manier gaan bekijken. Subliem.

I'm a sucker for emotional stories, I wholeheartedly admit that. So when I came across this book on Amazon and read its premise, I knew that it would probably remind me why I love to read alone at night on my couch, where no one can see me cry over fictional characters, with a cup of hot chocolat and one of my cats at my feet. Let's say that my cats were staring oddly at me at times.
Anyhow, about this story. It's about two friends who bicker and banter and are always there for each other. From the start you know they're very close just by a couple of scenes that takes place between them and tells you about the setting. They share a tragic incident which left them bereft, but also became the basis of their relationship. Sam (the girl) is so important to Jasper (the boy) that he even relies more on her than his own parents. Which, in the story, makes perfect sense.
Everything seems to be going into the right direction, until Jasper collapses during a sport's game and is taken to the hospital, where he finds out he's going to die from a tumor in his heart. When they face having to say goodbye, Sam is determined to have Jasper enjoy the last days of his life and takes him away from his familiar environment to participate head over heels in a singing contest, which is his last wish.
Jasper is angry that he never dared to chase his own dreams. Hovering between devastation, upset and anger over what is happening to him, he throws himself into the contest in an attempt to forget everything else. Sam is there every step of the way and takes care of him, helped by friends.
What I didn't expect from this book, is the way the author combines humor with sadness and upsetting moments. That Heart-Beat has a sad topic is pretty obvious from its premise, so I was prepared for that. The author throws several pretty heavy emotional punches here and there, for which I was prepared too.
What I also didn't expect were the details and the excitement during the contest. The way it was described was so wonderfully detailed and vivid, I couldn't help but see it play out right in front of me. At times I truly felt I was there in the audience, watching the events unfold. The author used her choice in music as a way to express the sentiment and feels.
I've rarely read a debut book that throws punches like that. This is a story with a sad premise, but there are also ray of lights and positive notes, friendship being the ultimate one. The book is very character-driven and the friendship between its two main characters (without romance, thank goodness, it would have been a cheap sell-out).
The story definitely made me think about what I would do if I knew I only had a few days left to live. To be honest, I still have no clue. I know one thing though: I would never forgive myself for a lower score than five. A perfect book for the upcoming dark evenings.

I read this book out of curiosity as some people were talking about it online. Well, raving about it, is more like it. Finishing it, I can see why. From the description, I knew that it was about a teenager with a fatal disease and prepared myself for a weeping fest. Well, that came, but the story was totally NOT what I had expected. It kept me awake at night.
This is contemporary Young Adult at its best. This book was SO good with so many surprises I didn't see coming. If you have to pick one book this year you want to read before the end of the year, pick this one. You won't regret it.
