The Cleanser

Rate this book
What if Modrad, Kasig, and Farfiz's return home didn't go as originally planned? What if unexpected events blocked their way, forcing them to take an alternate, possibly more dangerous, course? The Cleanser, which continues the Vargrom series, pursues this very scenario. While it acts as a companion piece to Vargrom: Modrad's Exile, it is also a stand-alone story that newcomers can enjoy. It's an adventure filled with pirates, goblins, dragons, magic, and more.

The Cleanser is an exciting read. It follows three friends as they struggle their way back home, however, that's where the Cleanser, a knight of sorts, comes in with a different idea. Part of Vargrom series, this is a subplot within a plot which is within the Vargrom plot. It's full of action and danger, and the best part is--"there be dragons!" Or, at least A dragon. Leave it to one of my favorite fantasy authors, Kevin Hopson, to write a story that reaches out and pulls you into a magical world that dares you to put it down until that last page is turned. I know this is a stand-alone story, but the Cleanser is a powerful character that I would like to see again someday. (hint, hint)

If you love adventure, action, fantasy, and a reading journey that sweeps you away into another time and place, this is the book for you! Can you tell, I am a fan of this series! Read it, and you will be too.

I've read some of Mr. Hopson's work before and enjoyed it, but the fantasy genre brings the best out in his prose. Hopson's The Cleanser (Book #3 in his Vargrom series) is a terrific, fast fantasy novella about a warrior tragically cursed to slave for a thousand years for an indifferent god. That's just the set-up for the first half. The second follows two extremely likable dwarves and a gnome as they unfortunately cross paths with "the Cleanser." Look out! Hopson has a way of dropping you into his world and does so with ease. So often fantasy bores me because it fills like work trying to enter the various kingdoms. Not so here. This fast read features likable characters, imaginative details, well-written action, and more. I've yet to read the first two books in Hopson's series, but I will now. So should you. Recommended.

Serell's life is honest and happy, his work fulfilling and useful, and his bride-to-be everything he could ever want in a woman. But good things don't last forever.

Two elves and a gnome are trying to return home and undo their disgrace, but the Cleanser stands in their way.

Their stories intersect in a surprising way and leave you wondering who should win and what winning really looks like.

This is a creation story, and is both heart-wrenching and hopeful in its own rights. It worked well as a stand-alone, although there were a few characters and situations that I felt were left hanging. I enjoyed this short story (or 2, if you count the two parts), and feel it makes a good intro to the world the author creates, a world where gods are equal parts cruel and benevolent and their power and presence can't be ignored.

Let me start off by saying “The Cleanser” by Kevin Hopson is a very good read. It’s well written, the story was easy to follow, flows nicely, and the characters and places were described perfectly. The characters even have limitations, which is refreshing because most writers glance over the finer details of a story. Kevin even throws in a dragon for good measures and not your typical one. This dragon breathes choking vapors. I’m guessing Kevin has played D&D before, given the class of characters and the type of dragon. :-)

If you like fantasy books you should check out this one and the rest of Kevin’s work. I am looking forward to reading more of his books, because it’s right up my alley.
