This book is the work of a distinguished scholar who was for many years Professor of English Literature at the Sorbonne. It is a comprehensive and thorough account of the history of French literature from the earliest times, and the author's intimate knowledge of two great cultures has enabled him to write it in such a way as to make his subject particularly significant for English readers.
An interesting primer on French Literature published in the 1950s, therefore not up to date. It has many of the problems one might expect of a work written then, but still a good read. The last entry is on Existentialism which the author says we have yet to know what kind of impact it really will have.
