Adam

Rate this book
If you are born in a country where being yourself can get you killed, exile is your only choice.

Adam is the remarkable true story of a young trans man having to make that choice and begin his journey. It charts Adam's progress from Egypt to Scotland, across borders and genders, in his search for a place to call home.

The play was first performed by the National Theatre of Scotland at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2017.

A beautiful exploration of belonging and self identity explored through the lens of trans identity and migration. I loved how Adam is Adam throughout the Play rather than being presented as cis like so many productions have done before. It was short and would have loved more exploration but by no means does that mean that the poetry isn't beautiful.

it's fine. even though it's a true story about really interesting circumstances it just hits all the usual trans story beats. maybe it's better performed.

Genuinely such a strong and intense exploration of the trans experience. Gut wrenching and uplifting in everyway.

A beautiful story of a transgender man called Adam as he travels from Egypt to Glasgow. His journey is tied in with references to Lord of the Rings and the first transgender pharaoh Hatshepsut.

It deals with immigration, GPs being unhelpful, assault at work and the fall out of coming out to a traditional Eygptian mother. Also the dangers of buying and using testosterone from the web.

The play is told using 2 performers multi-roling and has a couple of excellent monologues for Adam. This play is based on the true story of Adam Kashmiry and so has an authentic, beating heart that saturates the dialogue. Thoroughly recommended.
