This user-friendly guide gives straightforward and practical advice to anyone who wants a holistic approach to taking care of themselves naturally. Following the traditional framework of an anatomy book that explains each body system chapter-by-chapter, Pip Waller--an experienced practitioner and teacher--provides fundamental information and tips about exercise, diet, supplements, understanding and caring for your emotional and mental health, naturopathic principles from various traditions, and simple yet effective ways of working with spiritual energy. Based on the premise that an underlying vital force animates all life, which needs to be in balance for health to be fully present, this book is designed to support and promote our inherent tendency towards wholeness and equilibrium. Each chapter includes fun recipes to enhance our health and well-being.
This was the first required reading for a holistic nutritionist certification course that I am going through. I was disappointed at the lack of references to other scientific works -- the author quotes herself directly from another book she wrote to back up her claims. I was hoping this course would take me back to the basics of anatomy and physiology, and nutrition 101 and so far, through this book, it hasn't. There are good overviews of the body systems (skin, lymphatic, cardiovascular, digestive, etc.), but this was not the science-based foundation I was hoping for.
While I understand the idea of holistic nutrition (hence why I wanted to get certified), the book fluidly goes from a point about the anatomy of the body to an opinion or suggestion on self-care, and it became hard for me to take the science portions seriously. For example, she wrote about the basics of skin and hair, and then jumped into recommendations of shampooing your hair less. My last complaint is the blatant bias towards a vegetarian and vegan diet, claiming that science has concluded that animal products and proteins (or "dead animals" as the author puts it) are bad for humans, a very blanket statement that leaves no room for the idea of bio-individuality.

In the book, the author explains how different body systems work and how to take care of each system when an imbalance occurs. There is a lot of helpful information on self-care, as well as useful book references you might be interested to check out.
After reading this book, you will definitely be able to understand your body more and create holistic self-care routines. The book will also help you to reconsider your diet plan and help you to begin your healing journey or just maintain the balance of all systems in your body. 'Deeply Holistic' is a great start to learn about the holistic lifestyle.
If you are new to the topic of holistic self-care and anatomy, then, the book is highly recommended!
I read this book as a textbook for a nutrition course I'm taking. As a Christian, I don't agree with what it promotes in regard to spiritualism and connecting with the spirit world, but I appreciated the the overview of the human body systems and the nutrition advice that was scientifically backed.
This book is part of the curriculum for my AFPA Holistic Wellness certification...... but I would have enjoyed reading it regardless. The flow of the book was great and I liked how the author connected each chapter with previous chapters.
Such and informative and useful read. It covers such a wide range of ways to take care of yourself from spiritual practices to food and diet suggestions to a little pampering. Not exactly what I expected to so much more, it really opened my eyes to a better way to care for ourselves.
I had to read this as part of a class I'm taking. The book backs up almost none of its claims - all of the sources cited are from another book by same author. Most of what's in here is extremely biased and does not seem factual. I'm shocked I was assigned to read this book!
Parts of this book contained good information as far as body systems and nutrition for optimal health. However, as a Christian, I found all of the "spiritual" guidance and opinions of the author disturbing.
A book worth reading no matter what spiritual level you are on. Very well written, thought out, and informative. There were ideas and suggestions in the book that I cannot wait to try. You know how when you get to that "stuck" place in life, these suggestions will help you contemplate, consider, and act on different options that will enable you to move forward to becoming a complete and healthy body having a spiritual experience. And if you are not stuck, it's direction to leading to a place of contentment in mind, body, and spirit. Thank you for allowing me to review this book as a Goodreads winner!
