Misty the Scared Kitten is the first book in the series, Kitty’s Magic, by Ella Moonheart. It’s a middle grade chapter book about a young girl who finds out about her family’s secret power to transform into a cat. The book takes the reader through how the young girl uses her powers to help other cats. I enjoyed reading this book to my seven-year-old daughter. It was easy to read, entertaining and each chapter kept us wanting more. We also enjoyed the pictures scattered throughout the book. Both my daughter and I are excited to continue reading the series.
I read this aloud to my 5 year-old, who loved it. This is a good, short chapter book to read aloud to preschoolers and would be good for young independent readers who love cats and who wish they could be a cat, at least part of the time.
#partner Thanks @kidlitexchange network for a review copy of this book. All opinions are my own. Kitty's allergies have always stopped her from having a cat of her own. When her friend Jenny gets a cat, Kitty's grandma surprisingly allows her to stay the night anyway. Kitty is astonished to discover that in the middle of the night, she has turned into a cat, and she explores the neighborhood with Misty. During their neighborhood stroll, they come across a pair of cat bullies next door, and meet with the neighborhood cat council to try to figure out what to do with it. Moonheart doesn't have anything particularly nuanced to add to the conversation about bullies; the classic stand up to them method is used in this book. Along the way, Kitty learns that her grandmother, and all of the females in her family, also have this ability to turn into cats. In the middle of the book, Kitty inherits the role of cat Guardian from her grandmother. Although it is wonderful to see a young girl in a leadership position, it would have been more meaningful at the end of the book, after she had actually done something to earn it. This is a good book for someone who is looking for a cute fluff read about kittens.
Thanks to the @kidlitexchange network for the review copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Misty The Scared Kitty, the first book in the new Kitty’s Magic chapter book series By Ella Moonheart (published by Bloomsbury) is sure to win hearts.
Kitty, a young American girl with Japanese heritage, adores cats. There’s only one problem— she’s allergic. When her best friend becomes the proud new owner of a sweet silver tabby named Misty, Kitty is equally thrilled and distressed.
Kitty’s Japanese grandmother comes to the rescue, presenting Kitty with a necklace belonging to her great grandmother. A necklace, which she claims, will stop Kitty suffering from allergy symptoms.
But not only does the necklace allow Kitty to play comfortably with her friend’s new cat, it allows her to transform into a cat herself whenever she chooses! The only catch, Kitty cannot reveal the secret of the necklace to anyone or the magic will no longer work.
The timing of this new discovery is perfect. Misty is in hideout from two mean Persian cats who prowl her backyard. Together, Misty and feline-form Kitty sneak out at night to seek help from the local cats’ Cat Council and devise a plan to scare off the Persian bullies once and for all.
This series is perfect for the younger chapter book set. The magical element is exciting yet easy to understand, the story is simple, and the illustrations are super cute. With its relatively slow pace and lack of high-stakes action, this is an ideal bedtime read. Likely to appeal to fans of series such as The Fun Day Fairies by Daisy Meadows.
Cozy up in your pajamas and enjoy!

Kitty's Magic: Misty the Scared Kitten by Ella Moonheart is about a young girl who magically turns into a cat one night at a sleepover!! She may not be quite a super hero like Spiderman but "With great power, comes great responsibility" still rings true for Kitty. She becomes a cat guardian of the Cat council and quickly finds out that her first challenge is to help her new friend Misty deal with some local bully cats. This book is "purr-fect" for a young reader who loves animal stories and a little bit of magic!
On another note I love that Kitty comes from a family of Japanese immigrants and there is a touch of culture weaved into the story. I won't ruin too much of the story but will say that, Kitty is not the first guardian in her family!
This book is recommended for ages 7-10; grades 2-4. It's over 100 pages long; the text is easy to read with wide spacing, large margins, and a few illustrations sprinkled throughout the book. It was published on Feb. 20th! If this book sounds like something for your reader, go get it right "meow"! 😉

I absolutely loved it! It was cute, fast and purrrfect!! This was honestly not what I was expecting. The story took a positive yet an unexpected turn. It's not much of a spoiler since it is in the synopsis but I think it's wonderful that Kitty can turn into a kitten!
The illustrations are beautiful and perfectly Full Review: Here! Insta: Here! Twitter: Here!
Oh my stars! How I wish I had this book when I was a little girl! It's the start of a new chapter book series about a girl who can magically turn into a cat!
Such a beautiful story. I'm 41 years old, but I just loved it. I am still a beginner in English, but I can say that it is very easy to read and understand.

Book one of this charming early chapter series was purrrr-ely sweet and entertaining. Kitty has always loved cats. The only problem is she is incredibly allergic to them. When her friend gets a new kitten and invites Kitty for a sleepover, she’s a tad worried that her endless sneezing will be a problem. Her grandma quickly encourages her to go and gifts her a special family heirloom that she believes will help Kitty overcome her allergy. It definitely helps, but it also transforms Kitty into her very favorite animal!!!!
This is a sweet story full of magic. I love Kitty’s relationship with her grandma and how she learns about their family secret. It’s a great concept for a series that could have endless storylines as we watch her use these newfound powers to help out the local felines with various problems. This book addressed bullying. The chapters are short, it includes some incredibly cute illustrations and even gives the reader some interesting facts at the end. Definitely recommend for ages 7-10.
I must say this book is not anything like I expected and yet it is exactly like its description.
So, what was I thinking?
I imagine my thought has something to do with our dogs.
When we yell Kitty, they all run and look out the window to see if the neighborhood kitty is sitting on our porch. A spot she frequently seems to fancy.
So, despite the cover with a cute kitty and girl. The girl, Kitty, learns that she and other females in her family become ...well...Kitty's.
Are you following me?
"Human hands to kitten paws. Human fingers to kitten claws."
Hummm. Yes, I think there must be a little bit of magic in this story and I did like the descriptive writing and adorable illustrations. Plus it was fun to see cats mentioned whose names we've heard before.
Kitty soon becomes the Guardian of the local cats' Cat Council and in order to help other cats with their problems she must trust her human and cat heart.
Slightly magical story of young Kitty, who loves cats but can not stop sneezing when she is around them. One night, her Grandma gives her a mysterious cat necklace, one that belonged to her great-Grandmother. That night, while staying over at her friend's house, she magically sneezes herself into a kitten! And not just any kitten, but a Guardian of cats!
More surprises and some bully trouble, all sweetly resolved. Great for younger middle grade readers who love cats or animals, and like a little touch of magic.
This series is precious. When we’re talking about books for girls, we MUST factor in a number of books with cute kittens and magic.
Kitty is Japanese-English and in the first book, she discovers that the females in her family have the ability to turn into cats! Soon, Kitty is on a mission to save her new best-kitten friend from some mean neighborhood felines.
This is exactly the type of book my seven-year-old daughter loves. It’s cute as kittens (no pun intended) and full of magic and adventure.
Kitty is allergic to cats and is thrilled when her grandmother allows her to go to a sleepover at her best friend’s house, who just got a new kitten, Misty. Kitty’s grandmother gives her a special necklace to wear that night. We soon learn that Kitty can turn into a cat, and how the necklace helps her with her magical secret. She can’t tell her human friends or parents that she can transform into a cat but her grandmother knows her secret. Kitty’s special magic allows her to help Misty defeat some local bully cats.
Read this book to my grandson & his friend who is a girl & of Japanese descent. They truly loved it & did not want me to stop after a chapter or 2 like they normally, they wanted to make sure Misty was ok (which of course she was). Truly a delightful story to read to kids who can’t read yet or those just starting on “chapter books”. I will be looking for other books by this author for my grandson & his friend (& grandmother!) to enjoy.
111pgs. It is a story about a girl who goes to a spend the night party at a friend’s house. The friend has just gotten a new kitten. Magically the visiting girl turns into a kitten while suffering with her allergy. It is kind of silly but 2nd-3rd grade girls might like it if they are into cats. Probably would skip this one. I read only 2 chapters.
*Disclaimer to say that I am obviously not the target audience* HOWEVER It was cute and engaging for a 6-year-old. We read this together a few chapters at a time. The pictures were enjoyable. We had a fun time reading it. *6 year old* was interested in what was going to happen and excited to keep reading.
Kitty is staying over with her best friend Jenny to welcome her new kitten Misty. However Kitty soon discovers she can understand cats, because she can turn into one as well! Can she help the local cats and stop the bully cats Claws and Fang spreading terror in their area's?
A sweet little read for kids and a good undertone about bullying not being right or acceptable too.
I would give this book more than 5 stars if I could. This is one of the best books I've ever read. I'm excited to read the rest of the books in this series.
I received this book which is to be released in February 2018 as part of a giveaway through Bloomsbury Children's Books. This was an uncorrected proof with art work that had not yet been finalized. The story is about a little girl who is allergic to cats. One night she goes to a friend's house for a sleepover and strange things begin to happen---------------------
This was a good transition reader book. I know many children who will enjoy the Kitty's Magic series because of the easy reading and frequent illustrations.
