A Scottish chief. An English maiden. Their forbidden love threatens to destroy them both.
The Chief
The Scottish king gives Toren Kerr a dangerous but important mission—kill the English Warden. The man’s rumored corruption threatens to destroy the fragile peace along the border, and Toren reluctantly agrees to do his duty. When he travels to England to participate in the Tournament of the North as a cover for his mission, the last thing he expects is to find love, but he’s immediately drawn to a beautiful, mysterious Englishwoman. . . only to discover she’s the warden’s daughter.
The Maiden
Books are Lady Juliette Hallington’s escape from her sheltered life. Tales of romance are her favorite, and they’ve convinced her there’s only one reason to marry: love. When her protective father agrees to send her to the tournament with no guardian other than her married best friend, she recognizes her chance to avoid an arranged marriage. But after meeting Toren, Juliette begins to realize real life is more complicated than tales of love—and the very thing she wants most might consume everything she holds dear.
Cecelia Mecca is the bestselling author of steamy historical romance and also writes contemporary small town romance as Cissy Mecca and romantasy/PNR as C.L. Mecca.
Armed with a Ph.D. and lots of chai, she's known for giving readers "heroines who you want to be your best friend." When these ladies meet alpha-males who try to gain control, sparks fly until the very last page. One reader says, "No one can so completely whisk you away like Cecelia."
Our Highlander-loving author can be found in Northeast, Pennsylvania thinking up new ways to tame both medieval and contemporary bad boys. She is firmly House Stark and Gryffindor and loves all things fantasy, especially when tinged with a bit of steamy romance.
I was lucky enough to get the chance to read a proofreading ARC of The Chief's Maiden, book three in Cecelia Mecca's wonderfully written Border Series, and let me tell you, this book rocked! When Toren was introduced at the end of The Lord's Captive, my interest in the character was sparked, immediately. It was such a brief look at him but I knew if he got his own book it would be riveting. I was not disappointed! Just as with The Thief's Countess, The Lord's Captive, and the prequel, The Ward's Bride, Cecelia brought Thirteenth Century England and Scotland to life. She brings a passion to her historical romance that pulls you in and makes you feel like you are a part of the tale.
Toren is such an intriguing character. He has spent much of his life raising his siblings after his father dies and their mother runs back to England. He goes through life believing he has to keep others at bay, not letting anyone but his family be close to him, and then, when he's given a task by his king, his world is turned upside down hen he meets Lady Juliette, the daughter of the man he is sent to kill. He fights his growing attraction for her, he tries to tell himself he isn't falling in love, but he falls and falls, hard.
Just when you think all is lost, he finds a way to not only win back the woman who has stolen his heart, but to protect an innocent man and form a strong alliance with other Scottish clans, something he'd refrained from doing because his father always said it made a man look 'weak'. He comes to the realization that his father was wrong, having allies doesn't make you weak, it makes you strong. In the end, Toren and Jules find their HEA and you will find yourself tearing up and cheering for them!
Book Review For: The Chief's Maiden" by Cecelia Mecca 'The Chief's Maiden' by Cecelia Mecca is Book Three in The "Border" Series. This is the story of Toren Kerr and Lady Juliette Hallington. The sequel series set thirty years after the Border Series ends is called Brotherhood of the Border. Meet the children of your Border Series favorites and start with the first book in the series, A Noble Betrayalhere.
I need to go back to the beginning. New author, love the style, loved both the leads. They were completely worth the read and the whole Scottish/English twist was great. The meet and greet at the tournament was awesome The love, sweet and sexy. I need to go back and read the series from the beginning and I will follow it. Recommend.
A charming entry in the Border series involving the clan chief and the daughter of the warden he's commissioned to kill by his king. Some fierce fighting and sexy love scenes. A good match with the formula misunderstanding to fuel the chase.
Note: Make sure your reader is charged up because you won't want to put this book down until the end! The Chief's Maiden is book #3 of Cecelia Mecca's "Fantastic" Border Series. In short, "LOVED IT!" She is a lovely little thing, full of life, spark, impetuous, impulsive and wow, did he want her, or did he?
He is gorgeous! The scars just add to the attraction. Could she do this??
Loved this story. Takes you back to ancient England/Scotland when it was the norm to raid over the border, steal, lie, and justify it all with unshakeable belief of right. When arranged marriages were also the norm and, like it or not, you had to do as your parents instructed.
I just can't wait to see what Cecelia has for us in the next book. Awesome!
I read this book because it was promoted as a free giveaway and I was looking for new authors to try. I have to say that I will absolutely be reading more of Cecelia Mecca's books! I haven't read any of the other books in the series, which is likely why I found the beginning a little slow. I'm certain many of these characters were introduced in earlier books, and I will be backtracking to read those. I'm particularly excited to read Catrina's romance after meeting her in this book.
That being said, it was easy to follow for being read as a standalone (by me) when it was actually Book 3 in the series. I was impressed that there were clearly complex story lines preceding this book and yet the plot was able to stand on its own two feet. Read as a standalone, it took a little while before the characters really popped for me and became their own forces within the story. Once they did, though, it really took off. It was steamy and sweet, and unlike many romances it didn't lose me at the 60% mark. I was curious enough as to how the plot would resolve that it pulled me through. The romance was well-developed and the side characters entertaining. It had a good mixture of tropes and innovations to keep everyone satisfied.
As a historian I enjoyed just how much historical detail she included. The heroine is a bibliophile, and Mecca's descriptions of the books loved by her characters were beautifully done. My biggest criticism is that I would've loved more similar descriptions of the rest of the setting, though I know many readers feel those bog down the story and slow the action. But, I'm a fantasy nerd as well as a medieval nerd so I like a good helping of both.
I have tried reading a number of newer Highland romances (I'm a life-long Julie Garwood follower), and this is the first one I not only finished within a couple of days, but also really enjoyed. I absolutely recommend reading this series - I know I will!

Woot!! This was by far the best book I've read,Toren rocks!!
Toren Chief of the Clan Kerr has a mission to complete by order of his King - kill Stewart Hallington the English Lord Warden of the Middle Marches. It's been rumoured that he's corrupted putting the fragile peace at risk. Traveling to England for the Tournament of the North he's certain it's an easy job to complete until he's sidetracked by the only woman that can cost him his mission, sanity and above all his HEART!
Juliette Hallington has been sheltered most of her life her only reprieve are her books where she escapes. Believing in marriage and true love Juliette is certain she doesn't want to marry without having a chance at finding her true soulmate. The opportunity arises when she gets the chance to go to the Tournament of the North. Stumbling upon the most handsomest man Juliette knows in her heart that this is her true love and by the way he responds to her, she's convinced that he's not so indifferent. Now all she needs is to have him fall in love with her! Will she feel the same when she realizes that he's the man that's ordered to kill her father? Will he break her heart? Or will he be the man that puts love before all else!
This was such an awesome read, I've been waiting for Toren's story like forever and wasn't disappointed! Lots of intrigue and emotional passionate moments between Toren and Juliette. Exciting detailed accounts of the Tournament bring the pages alive with the tension and rivalry of the contestants. With lots of intrique and political unrest Cecilia Mecca has done a sensational job at another EPIC story!!
Received a complimentary copy from the author for my unbiased honest opinion!
The third book in this series, The Chief's Maiden does not disappoint. Juliette is a good daughter with a determination that she has to keep hidden from her parents and even the servants in her home. She has been well school by the nuns at the convent, even to the extent of being encouraged to read a wide range of non-religious literature by Sister Heloise. Tales of love have touched her soul and she longs to have a love match despite her father's plans for her. When Juliette meets Toren at the Tournament of the North, she feels that she has a chance of reaching for her dreams. However, Toren's mission at the tournament would only bring Juliette heartbreak if she found out. The attraction between Juliette and Toren is instantaneous and the more they meet, the more intense their feelings are for each other. Toren respects Juliette's intelligence and she can't keep her eyes off him, so that it eventually becomes obvious to everyone around them that they have feelings for each other. A great deal of research has gone into this book, giving background and history. However, it is first and foremost a romance and has all the makings of great romantic drama, much like those that Juliette enjoys reading about. The book is well written and easy to read, one chapter flowing into the next. There is some mystery, a plot and background conspiracy, all of which keeps the story interesting. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the saga of the Border Series.
I thought it was a wonderful book. First off, I wish to thank Cecelia Mecca for offering me an ARC copy for which I wish to give my review.
An excepcionally great story, the third book, where we get to know Lady Juliette Hallington, daughter of the English Lord Warden of Middle Marches, whom is supposed to marry her neighbor whom she does not love and decides, with her father's acceptance, to go to the games they have every year, to celebrate the peace on the border lines between Scotland and England for several years...She wants to go to find love... Toren Kerr, Chief of Clan Kerr, is ordered by his King to kill Lord Stewart Hallington, Juliettes father, because it is said that he accepts money in exchange for not pressing charges, for murder or attacks, on the British side. When they both arrive, he is searching for Lord Hallington but ends up with his daughter, as she arrived with her best friend Lady Christina and her husband, so she could represent her father while he arrives. What will happen when the English Lord Warden arrives, will Toren be able to follow through? Because he has heard things that makes him think twice about it. Will Lady Juliette find the true love she searches for, before returning home to marry lovelessly?
This book is great and has a HEA...It's well worth the read and I give it 5 stars only because that is the max allowed. I'd give it double.
Cecilia Mecca has created another intriguing tale with this third installment of the Border Series. You are captured from the first page and not let go until the end. Scotsman, Toren Kerr, Chief of Clan Kerr, has been given orders by the king to kill Stewart Hallington, English Lord Warden. Toren attends the Tournament of the North,so that he can come in contact with Hallington and carry out his orders. While walking around the tournament, he rescues a maiden who is running from the advances of a knight. It does not take long for Lady Juliette Hallington to become attracted to the braugh knight and she is determined to get close to get to him. . Being pushed by her father to marry as soon as she returns home, she is determined to find a husband who she can love. When Toren finds out that Juliette is the daughter of Stewart Hallington, he feels torn as he begins to have feelings for her. The author pulls you into the strong emotions of the characters as the story unfolds. Now the waiting begins for the next installment of the Border Series! Excellent as always Cecelia Mecca!!
Toren is the chief of the Clan Kerr and has been ordered by the king to kill, Stewart Hallington, English Lord Warden of the Middle Marches. Juliette Hallington is the daughter of said warden. They both go to the Tournament of the North. The way, the surroundings were described and the characters seemed so realistic, you felt you were at the tournament, watching the jousting. The first time she met Toren was when she ran into him, as she ran away from a young man. She was wearing a crimson gown with silver threads around the sleeves and neck. The plot has several twists and the author has managed to twirl the strands into an interesting and mesmerizing tale. It keeps your attention and is even paced. I think you will find that it is well worth the time to read, as all her books are. I received a copy from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
I loved Juliette and Toren's story! They were very compelling and likable characters that felt an instant connection with one another. But, one BIG thing stood in their way, a secret that Juliette had no knowledge of: Toren has been sent to kill her father who is suspected of Treason against the Crown by intentionally causing turmoil between border people of Scotland and England. I was instantly a fan of how independent and take charge Juliette was. And, I was easily drawn to Toren's sense of honor and duty and desire to be a gentleman, as he fought his feelings and desire for Juliette. This book had everything it takes to be an interesting and memorable story for me.
*I received a complimentary ARC of this story in order to read and provide a voluntary, unbiased and honest review, should I choose to do so.
I would like to thank the author Cecelia Mecca for a copy of this book in return for an honest opinion.
This book focuses on Torren Kerr, the chief of clan Kerr. He just wants to keep his clan and lands safe, but is ordered to kill the English warden who is suspected of taking bribes and putting border peace at risk. Lady Juliette Hallington is the daughter of the English Warden and is trying to find a love match before her farther forces her into a loveless marriage. It's well written and a nice expansion of the universe Mecca is creating, the book can be read as standalone or as part of the series.
what a great book, I was given this book in audio form and it kept me up late into the night listening not wanting to turn off my computer. I loved the characters and the connection they had with each other. I love the boldness of Juliette, she knows what she wanted and didn't want to settle even if it was the way of the times. And Toren was just the right sweet and though you want in your Highlander! I would read more from this author in a heartbeat! Thank you got giving me the chance to do so!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋 I need a Torren in my life , Chief, Spy , Champion, Gent, and Hunk, who could ask for more from a Highlander . He’s the perfect hero for a book , and in this book Cecilia has made him so . Jules is Sweet ,Caring , Ladylike, Fiesty, Beautiful, and adores Torren . The story is wonderful, a continuation of the lives and trials faced by this extraordinary family , linked by marriage and borders on the Scottish Marches. Brilliant addictive and leaves you wanting more .
3.75 stars. Pretty good until the predictable and out-of-character actions around 87-89% of the book. I wish the author had been more original in handling that part.
Another enjoyable story of love intrigue and passion. We continue to learn more about previous characters which I always enjoy. Toren and Juliette have to overcome some major obstacles in order to be together. Both characters develop as the story unfolds.
Scottish chief. An English maiden. Their forbidden love threatens to destroy them both.
The Chief
The Scottish king gives Toren Kerr a dangerous but important mission—kill the English Warden. The Chief’s Maiden is the third book in a historical romance series set in 13th century Northumbria along the Anglo-Scottish border. If you like strong female heroines, alpha male heroes, and sizzling romance, you’ll love the third installment of the Border Series.
My Thoughts:
This is the third book in this series and I have read all of them. This one as with the others is well written and you never loose interest, however if I was going by the cover I may have never read this book. The artwork looks like a blow-up figure and was a distinct turn off. But if you get past the cover you are in for a delightful read. Torn and Juliette are born enemies. She is an Englishwoman and he is Scottish by birth. Toren has been enlisted by the Scottish king to kill Juliette's father who he is sure is responsible for the border unrest. After meeting and falling for this beautiful woman will Toren still be able to carry out his mission? I gave this book 4.5 of 5.0 stars for storyline and character development and a warm sensual rating of 2.5 of 5.0 flames. This is more a story of strife and resulting love than one of an intimate nature. I received a complimentary digital ARC of this book from the author to read. This in no way affected my opinion of this title which I have read and reviewed voluntarily.
3.5 🌟 Carries on from book 2 in the series, this time with Toren Kerr as the hero ( he's the brother of the heroine from book 2).
Clan chief Toren just wants to live his life and keep his family and his people safe and protected without help or interference from anyone else. Unfortunately, his King demands he attend the annual Tournament for English and Scottish knights as a cover to kill the English Baron responsible for maintaining the peace along the Borderlands. Rumours are rife that the Baron is accepting bribes and allowing criminals to go unpunished, thus weakening the already tenuous truce between the two countries.
At the Tournament Toren meets a beautiful and singular maiden who piques his interest. She intrigues him, but he refuses to be diverted from his unwelcome mission.
When Toren discovers his delightful lady is the Baron's daughter he is torn between his feelings for her and his duty to his King.
Juliette is about to be wedded to a stifling man of her father's choosing. Attending the Tournament is her final chance to find the love described in the stories she loves to read. She meets Toren and knows he is the one for her. She can't understand why someone so wonderful, who clearly cares for her, seems so reluctant to give her what she wants.
Juliette is overly headstrong and determined, despite being a complete innocent. Luckily Toren is an honourable man. The romance was good, with a bit of angst from Toren.
Another excellent book by Ms. Mecca. Both Juliette and Toren are likable lead characters. We watch Juliette bloom as her personality is not oppressed once she is away from her parents. We watch Toren struggle between his mission and his desires. Their path to HEA was not clear given Toren's beliefs along for the reasons for those beliefs. I also liked seeing how Catrina and Bryce were fairing.
Spoiler parts: I like that Toren investigated the charges against Juliette's father instead of just accepting them as fact. We only saw the surface of this investigation but it was obvious that his investigation was more thorough.
While Christina and her husband are important to the story, it was nice to watch their marriage become a desired relationship. I also like when her husband's career was revealed.
Once an arrest was made of the person accepting the bribes, I was hoping to see his former boss linked to the scheme, since he clearly benefited from it.
Alfred did not dawn on me as a character to watch when he was introduced. However, this character becomes interesting late in the story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Toren Kerr chief of Clan Kerr was on a mission to kill Stewart Hallington the English Lord Warden of the Middle Marches. He was suspected of taking bribes from ones that were causing chaos. He was to go to the tournament where Hallington was to be and kill him. When he gets there he comes upon a woman who he finds striking. Lady Juliette goes to the tournament to find a man she could fall in love with before her father marries her off to someone she doesn’t want to marry. When she comes upon Laird Kerr she finds him handsome. It was a wonderful journey to see how they come together.
I did enjoy this 5 star books. This has been another pleasant journey. This is my fourth book by this author, and she didn’t disappoint me. I liked both the H and h, and story. I enjoy reading books with reoccurring characters. It had intrigue and some steamy love scenes, adding to the story. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. No real villain, but kept my full attention. I recommend this as I do all her books, best if read in order. I already have the next book to start reading.
Four stars for Cecelia Mecca's book series. A new author added to my list of must reads. This book as with the 2 before did not fail to delight. The only thing I have to say negative about this book is the heroine. I cannot seem to like her. She is much too forward and selfish. Everything is Toren's fault and she pushed herself on him while he tried to respect her but she would have her own way. Just still cannot like her. I give the heroine one star.
Each story seems to be more memorable than the last. When a new book is released, I don't even need to read the summary before I buy.. but once I have her story down loaded, I actually wait for the perfect time to begin, because once I start reading, I cannot stop... To give you an idea of just how special her stories are, remember when you used to wait for the next Nora Roberts book to release? Yep, they are that good. Good enough to read on kindle unlimited and then buy, just so you can re read whenever you want.
I have read series 1,2 and just finished 3. I held back on making a review just for fairness and to discover consistency in style. I make this review for all three books I have read. The books are everything that a feel good romantic historical novel should be. Once you read it you will want to keep reading until the end. The overall feel of the books the author wrote is just light and bright and romantic.
Scotland 1271. Alpha Male Adult Romance💞 and Political Intrigue. Toren🐺🔪 is a Scottish Border Chieftain, who goes to a tournament looking for an English Lord he is supposed to kill for political reasons. Instead, he meets the man's beautiful, strong willed daughter, Juliette!
I enjoyed this book a lot because both main characters are strong personalities and they both compliment each other.
