Secret Baby, Second Chance (doesn't the title say it all, really? ;) ) is the third book in the Sons of Stillwater series but works just fine as a standalone. If you're going to go back and read the other two brothers' books there are slight spoilers here, but nothing that should dampen your enjoyment of any of them.

Vincente and Beth had a tempestuous on-again-off-again relationship until a year and a half ago, when Beth disappeared and they feared that the serial killer who had been terrorizing their town had made her one of his victims...until Vincente's sister-in-law, a police detective, finds out where she's been hiding.

And her location isn't all she's been hiding (see title)...

I liked Beth, Vincente, and Lia (and Melon!). Right from their first scene together it wasn't hard to picture them as a family, despite their rocky past and Vincente's hang ups. The danger that had Beth on the run wasn't one that could be solved easily--there were some clues, but a whole lot of red herrings were thrown in the mix as well to keep you turning the pages. All in all it was a decent romantic suspense--the romance was a bit stronger than the suspense, but overall it was an entertaining read.

Rating: 3 stars / C+

Good second chance romance combined with a riveting mystery. A year and a half earlier, Vincente and Beth had had an intense on-again-off-again relationship. Then she disappeared without a word, leaving no trace of where she'd gone. Events from an earlier book made Vincente believe that she was dead (see Covert Kisses). He is stunned when police investigation reveals that she is alive. I enjoyed his cloak and dagger efforts to find her after being told that she is in hiding.

Beth had left Stillwater after receiving threats against her life and those of the people she cared for. It wasn't until after she was gone that she discovered she was pregnant, and at that point, she didn't dare contact Vincente. The stress she was under created some severe problems for her that she has just begun to overcome. Having Vincente show up at her door both thrilled and terrified her.

I liked the rekindling of Beth and Vincente's relationship. Previously it had been a very stormy one, but in the past eighteen months, both of them had changed. Vincente had been very much a lone wolf, holding himself at a distance from everyone. His experience with relationships was influenced by his volatile and selfish mother. But through the previous two books, he had become closer and more open with his brothers, showing him that love isn't all bad. Beth had also done a lot of growing up once she realized that she had another person to take care of. Her battle with depression had also made her stronger emotionally. When Vincente confronted Beth about her disappearance and hiding of his daughter, she didn't try to deny anything but faced up to what she had done and her reasons for it. I loved how Vincente immediately fell under little Lia's spell. I loved seeing the three of them become a family so quickly. The attraction between Beth and Vincente is just as strong as it had been before, but now there is an extra depth to it. It was great to see them learn more about each other outside of the physical connection. It didn't take long for Beth to see past Vincente's confident exterior to the vulnerabilities that he kept hidden from everyone else. I also liked how Vincente admired how Beth overcame her difficulties, and how he saw her strength of will as they dealt with the murderer. Though Beth realized her feelings first, I enjoyed Vincente's "aha" moment more. It took nearly losing her for Vincente to take that final step. I loved his big moment at the end. It was romantic and sweetly vulnerable. The epilogue was a good wrapup.

The suspense of the story was terrific. I ached for Beth and her memories of what had happened on that climb. I completely understood her fear when the threats began and how she wanted to protect Vincente. Once he got involved and they included Laurie in the process, things began to happen quickly. I was hooked from the start and completely invested in finding out who was behind it. There were multiple possibilities, and each attack seemed to point to someone else. I didn't suspect the true culprit until near the end, and the motive was completely off my radar. The final confrontation was intense, with several twists before it was all over.

I'm kind of mixed on this one for a couple of reasons. One, this is exactly the same cheesy cover you would associate with Harlequin from years ago. Normally this would be a turn off for me, I wouldn't see this on a table or shelf at Barnes & Noble and pick it up, it feels run of the mill. So the cover was blah. I should also note that this is the third in the Sons of Stillwater series but these are stand alone. I didn't even realize it was further into a series until I had finished it up, and I didn't feel like I was missing important plot information from previous books, they are all their own story, so don't let that hold you back.

Alright so this book is mostly about Beth, on the run with her baby from an unknown killer. Vincente is the baby daddy and her lover with which she had a very hot and cold affair with, and he's set out to find her. When he does, he discovers he has a child and his immediate anger at Beth for keeping that from him is replaced by concern, and maybe a little love, when he realizes that Beth has a legitimate fear for her and her baby's life. The concern is around a hiking trip she took years ago in which a hiker was severely injured, and later murdered. Someone is taking out each hiker one by one and taunting them until they get to them. Vincente vows to protect Beth and bring this murderer to justice.

Overall? It almost reminded me of Dean Koontz's IceBound, something I read way back in my high school days (adult books were far more entertaining), because of the connection with snow and mountains and hidden killers. I had a hard time sticking with it but once the story got going and my interest in who the real killer was, and why, I stuck with it and was pleasantly surprised that I couldn't figure out who the killer was despite the clues that I put together in hindsight. Overall? A solid 3/5 stars. I will say that Harlequin continues to deliver solid romance and this one is accurately dubbed as Romantic Suspense, it delivered for its genre.

4.5 Stars (Rounded Up for Goodreads)

I was sent this book in part of a blog tour. My ratings and reviews will be my own personal opinions and are in no way influenced by publishers or authors who may have sent me books to review.

This is the third book in the Sons of Stillwater series. When this first started, I knew it was not the first book in a series. I do prefer reading series in order as I do think you take more away from the story. However; this can be read as a standalone as the author does a great job with filling in the backstory. After reading this, I need to read the first two books! This surprised me in the best way possible.

This starts off involving information about a serial killer, a missing person, and of course a secret baby. I was expecting the baby part based on the cover and title, but I was not expecting the story around the characters. I started this at night, and I did not want to put it down. Every time I went to put it down something else would happen and I had to continue to read. I also enjoyed how quick paced this was. Things happen right away so you are immediately brought into the story.

This was suspenseful and I found my heart pounding at different scenes. I know some people do not love baiting chapters, but they are my favorite. They leave you wanting to keep reading. I loved that about this book. I will say my only disappointment was the ending and why everything was happening. It was just not what I was wanting. I did predict the killer throughout the story though.

I also really enjoyed the writing. I loved the descriptions and the metaphors used. There were so many sections that I wanted to highlight with amazing sentences. The authors writing is beautiful and I want to read more of her work based just off of that. The writing gets 5 stars from me!

Overall, I am so glad I gave this a chance. I loved it!

Vincente Delaney’s search is finally over. He’s the one that informs us of a mystery that surrounds the town of Stillwater. Makes me wonder what I’ve missed by not reading the first two books. But in no way do you need to read them in order to enjoy this one.

Bethany “Beth” Wade left everything she knew in order to start over. With her are two possible cutie patooties. One would be her daughter, Lia, and the other would be her dog, Melon. They make it tough sometimes to focus on what occurred in Beth’s past that is affecting her future. You start to want to see more of those two but our author is good about getting us back on track.

The story revolves around a group of people that have a common love of climbing. Personally it made me glad that I’m afraid of heights. I’m happy that there are people that don’t have that phobia but I’ll be one that cheers from the safety of the ground. Sometimes I like the idea of setting the mood when reading but in this case I want my feet firmly on the ground.

It was a book where you won’t have any trouble putting it down – but not for long. You’ll want to pick it back up again because you’ll want to see if something gets revealed or if our couple acts on the heat that is being rekindled. Sometimes we need to power down and get off all the electronics and I found I enjoyed holding a physical copy of this book. It forces you to sit back and just read. Plus I got to use one of the many bookmarks that have been collecting in my living room. If you had the electronic version you could, in a way, go about your business and read the book at the same time. But I don’t want that here. This book reminds me why I’d be a lousy detective – I’m never able to figure out the mystery. But one thing I do know is that this story is a good addition to the Harlequin brand.

I was not compensated nor was I required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

I love a good second chance story and this one is a beauty, it has all of the good things that a romance reader wants in a romantic suspense, there is danger, lots of emotion and of course a sensual love between two strong willed people, I suggest that you make yourself comfortable while reading this one because you won’t want to put it down.

Vincente Delaney has lived in Stillwater always, his Italian mother left him as a child and he was bought up by his father and stepmother he has two younger half- brothers and he always felt a little left out. He works hard and him and his girlfriend Beth have a very fiery on and off again relationship he doesn’t do forever but he does find it hard to stay away from Beth, and then she disappears, vanishes not to be heard from and no amount of searching can find her.

Beth Wade vanishes from Stillwater after being threatened, memories from a tragedy that happened ten years before resurface and Beth needs to go, but two years in hiding and with a secret, Beth was always reluctant to leave Vincente but it had to be done and now he has found her and their baby. Beth reluctantly agrees to his help this brings them closer together, could Vincente be changing his mind about permanent now and with him falling under the spell of his gorgeous daughter Lia life is changing but there is danger ahead.

This is a fabulous story part of a series but I have come in with the third one and it was a fabulous read, MS Godman has ticked all of the boxes for a story that will keep you on the edge of your seat as a killer comes after Beth and Lia and Vincente goes out of his way to protect them, but his heart opens up and their love blossoms beautifully to the best HEA, I loved both Beth and Vicente and their strong characters, do yourself a favour and pick this one up you will not be sorry, I am off to get the first two in the series and I look forward to many more stories from MS Godman.

It is a 3.75

Romantic Suspense is not a new genre for me but I picked it up after a long time. And I am glad I picked this one up.

The story had a sweet romance going for it with spice levels keeping it interesting on that font. As for the suspense, I was only able to figure out the mystery only a chapter before it was unveiled so I would say it was a good job.

Lia, the baby, kept things fun in this book. All those moments with the baby made me smile and I am glad for that character to be an integral part of the story.

Beth and Vincente did not seem to be fictional characters for the most part because not everything about them was good. These were real people with negative traits and were riddled with insecurities that made them feel unworthy.

How they overcame their fears and chose to live a life they could only dream of was a wonderful show of internal strength.

With all those things, you might wonder why would I only give it a 3.75. So here is the answer. The damn cover is so misleading!

Look at it again.

- The cover shows a clean shaven man when Vincente had a beard in the whole story
- Beth’s hair was shoulder length while the cover shows longer hair
- As for baby Lia, she was a toddler. Almost a year old while the cover shows an infant

If Jane Godman ever reads this review, I want her to know that if not for this cover mishap, I’d have given the book a 4.5.

SECRET BABY, SECOND CHANCE by author Jane Godman is January 2018 release by Harlequin Romantic Suspense series. New author to me but certainly not a disappointment. She knew how to hold my attention.
Beth Wade had been part of the West County Climbing Club from Stillwater. The climb that changed so many lives was up Devil’s Peak. That is where the first death occurred.
She also had a off and on relationship with Vincente Delaney and the last time she was with him she had no clue what her next stage of her life had in store for her.
After several mysterious photos had come, letter came, and the plot thickens.
Once Beth leaves town to go into hiding as she might be next she finds also that in another way her life with going to change forever. Once baby Lia was born she knew now she needed to protect not only herself but her daughter.
Vincente’s sister in law was with the Stillwater Police and came to ask Beth questions. Unknown to both of them Vincente had followed Laurie Delaney to Beth’s house. After Laurie left Beth’s house Vincente went to visit her and that is when he got a shock.
Vincente had no idea he was a dad.
Who was the mysterious killer of all the climbers? Would Beth be next?

Exciting from start to finish! We begin the latest book in Jane Godman’s Sons of Stillwater series thinking we are stepping into one story, and by the end it’s evolved into more than we ever expected! It’s exciting, real and a refreshing take on solving an in depth suspense. My favorite in the series so far! Well developed characters, a back story that’s carried forward nicely from previous books and a story all of it’s own to keep us interested. Looking forward to more to come in the series!

When Vincente Delaney’s on again/off again girlfriend disappeared a year and a half ago, he didn’t understand it, but angrily assumed she had run out on him. When new details came to light months later, they assumed she was probably dead, so to say he is shocked to learn that she’s alive and well and raising the daughter that he knew nothing about is putting it mildly!

Beth Wade was forced to leave Vincente for his own safety. She never expected to see him again, and has spent the time apart basking in the love of their innocent daughter. When Vincente finds her and brings them home to Stillwater, the danger she was running from rears it’s ugly head yet again foisting them all into the a race against time to save lives!

SECRET BABY, SECOND CHANCE by author Jane Godman is January 2018 release by Harlequin Romantic Suspense series.

When Vincente Delaney found out that Beth Wade was alive and she was not a serial killer’s target, but she had walked out on him in the midst of their affair without letting him know, he was not really sure what he felt.

So he went to her door to find out. Guess what he found out? A baby who looked exactly like him. But then why had she left in the first place? Apparently there was a killer after her. What would Vincente do? Would he step up and look after his new family?

SECRET BABY, SECOND CHANCE is a thrilling story full of suspense and mystery. The story hooked me right from the beginning and kept me on the edge wanting to know how it all ends. Author Jane Godman was a new to me author but she didn’t disappoint. This story flows fluidly and will take a reader to heartbreaking tensions and breathtaking thrills.

Highly recommended for all readers of romantic suspense.

A book in a series about the town of Stillwater, it can be read alone however once you read this you will go back for them all. Bethany Wade leaves everything behind to start a new with her daughter Lia. Vincente Delaney is looking for her as he is aware of the mystery that surrounds the town. Mystery about Beth's baby is uncovered as soon as Vincente see her, its his. That is just the beginning of a story that will keep you enthralled to the very end and anxious to read the next one. Ms. Godman has truly written a wonderful story for all suspense readers, she will keep you guessing till the end, and of course there would have to be romance to add the icing on the cake. Enjoy and find yourself wrapped up in this book.

"Secret Baby, Second Chance (Sons of Stillwater) by Jane Goodman is a true Harlequin Suspense Romance. Vincente Delaney doesn't know why Beth Wade disappeared from his life 1 1/2 years ago but a dangerous situation that pulled them apart brings them back together. Vincente finds out that Beth had a baby girl and Lia was his. He also finds out that someone is out to kill her, and those she used to climb with are ending up dead. There is a romance in this story, but the author doesn't go into graphic detail. It is a great book and kept me wondering who did it until the reveal.

I really need to read more "Romantic Suspense" books if they're as good as Secret Baby, Second Chance. I thoroughly enjoyed it because it was it grabbed me from the beginning and evolved into so much more than just a story. I was entertained, I was turning pages trying to find out the key to everything and I enjoyed the characters, the emotion and the plot.

Vincente and Beth bring the book alive and actually didn't want to put it down when life got in the way.

Thank you for a wonderful story and a wonderful book I'm going to read again.

Enjoyed this romantic suspense. Haven't read the earlier Stillwater novels but that doesn't matter. The characterisation was clear, the pacing of the suspense carried you along. Would happily read more by this author.

I do love some intrigue with my romance. I also love when a book keeps me interested right to the end. Beth disappeared from Stillwater over a year ago. Her on again off again boyfriend Vincente thinks she is dead. When his sister in law who is in law enforcement tells him she is alive. He follows her and gets the shock of his life. Beth isn't alone, she has a baby daughter . His daughter. Vincente is shocked to say the least. He wants to know why she left like she did. Beth reluctantly explains, when Vincente hears what she has been through. He refuses to leave them and promises to keep them safe.
As they work together to piece the puzzles of whose out to kill her. Will the killer finish off their unfinished business? I loved all the characters and Melon the dog. I was kept guessing till the end as to who the killer was. Highly recommended for fans of romantic suspense.

Author Jane Goodman tells a riveting tale in Secret Baby Second Chance. Her writing is spell-binding and captures your attention from chapter one. With characters that are realistically portrayed and a plot that both engages and moves along with fluent pace, makes this a compelling read. Vincente Delaney is a lone wolf who thinks the love of his life was dead. But now Beth Wade is back, with a little secret, his daughter. Now Vincente vows to protect his daughter and the woman he cares about at all cost. But the unravelling of Beth's past will prove to open more than a few can of worms. Now Vincente and Beth must do whatever it takes to bring light to the darkness which surrounds them. With a thrilling plot that makes every page feel like the unfolding of a crime drama episode, Secret Baby Second Chance makes for the perfect treat for any reader who savors suspense and romance rolled into one.
