A wonderful book that I rather imagine the diet industry dislikes intensely! The premise is to get back to a natural way of eating, eat when hungry (the first thing to do is actually allow yourself to eat!) and train yourself to need only the right amount of food.  With no fad recipes, no cutting anything out, no making yourself ill trying to work out what is right and wrong with food, don't start starving yourself, make sure you keep hunger at bay - this I will re-read and start to do.

Last year I reviewed the book _How to Become Naturally Thin by Eating More: The anti-diet book_, written in 1989. The author kindly offered to send me this new book in exchange for an honest review.

Jean Antonello's approach hasn't changed over the course of her 30+ years as an obesity and eating disorders specialist. When something works, don't fix it--- right? The newer book has refined and honed her tried-and-true philosophy, adding in more current research, methodically unraveling fad diet claims, and presenting a valid argument for a complete paradigm shift regarding weight management.

95% of people who lose weight on a calorie restricted diet gain it all back again, plus more. The calorie restrictions send a "famine" signal to the body, causing it to lower metabolism and hang on to calories. At some point, regardless of will power, a body will compensate by feasting, aka "binging." The feast- and -famine cycle has begun, and it creates guilt as well as weight gain.

There's a better way, and it is simple, freeing, and JOYFUL. Here it is: Eat when you are hungry. Eat quality food. Stop when you are full.

That's it. Really.

If it's that simple, why do we need a 240 page book to explain it? We don't. Many people have had success losing weight with just a simple explanation of this concept. But for most, it's such a big paradigm shift that education and reinforcements are needed. This book provides that.

Dieters fight hunger, but Jean's advice is to never, never ignore it. Stock up on quality food and do not delay eating when hunger pains hit. Eventually, your body will get the message that you are no longer in famine mode, and the slowed metabolism will bounce back.

A history of dieting may leave us out of touch with our body signals. We may have learned to ignore hunger signals, and inversely--- to ignore the "full" signal. The book deals with this issue of re-sensitizing ourselves to recognize the signals.

Refreshingly, there are no prescribed foods or amounts or even taboos. There is education about what constitutes quality food, and the encouragement to know that a well fed body will begin to crave what's good for it.

Weight will normalize SLOWLY. It may take 2 to 5 years for this to happen, but the weight loss will be permanent and there will be freedom from yo-yo dieting and better yet--- normalcy. That means your life won't center around food, you will be free from the slavery of a feast-or-famine lifestyle.

This book provides a welcome dose of sanity to the subject of weight management.

As both the holiday eating season and 2017 draw to a close, sharing a book on losing weight seems appropriate. So many of us focus on resolutions at this time of year, especially health related issues.

A little personal history: In the late 80’s I read the first book by Jean Antonello, RN, BSN, entitled How to Become Naturally Thin by Eating More. I remember successfully following the principles. Fast forward to a lengthy period during which, due to health problems, my concern was being underweight. Fast forward again to better health, but also to some life changes which resulted in an undesired weight gain. Recently I wanted to lose that weight, and I did lose some with a low carb diet, but then I hit a plateau for well over a month despite adherence to the diet and increased exercise.

In the back of my mind I remembered reading a book about eating, with a blue cover, written by a nurse, but that was not enough information for Google to help me locate it. As a book reviewer for NetGalley, I have an incredible number of books that I can request to review. Almost unbelievably, Jean Antonello’s new book popped up on my screen as I was seeking out answers for the plateau. Immediately I knew this was the same author. While I was waiting for my request to be approved, with names now in hand, I was able to find not only the new book, but also a picture of my original book which is now tucked away in a box in NM while I am in Mexico. I felt like I had just found the Mother Lode!

So what do I think of Jean Antonello’s theories and her revised book about 30 years later? It makes so much sense to my personal situation, and she has backed it up with years of research, working with clients, and eating according to the principles herself. She advocates listening to your body’s signals for hunger and for being full. She calls for eating real food and plenty of it. This is not a diet. You are encouraged to eat good foods and never let yourself get hungry which then results in bingeing. She refers to the season of adaptation a former yo-yo dieter needs to go through as “recovery.” You are in charge of your own eating for a change. The plan is based on the feast and famine physiology of our bodies. Dieting is counterintuitive to your body because when you hold back good food, then your body perceives a famine and does not want to let go of the fat. It also slows down the metabolism to protect us from starvation. Both of these things explain my plateau.

There is so much more theory and research in her book, which is written in a very user friendly style. The approach is not complicated, but it does require commitment, not to hunger as in a diet, but to listening to your body’s signals and not thinking like a dieter any more. Antonello debunks lots of dieting myths such as the blame game that is put on overweight people that they are lazy, have psychological problems, and lack will power. She does not guarantee the fast weight loss most diets promise. She does offer freedom from obsession with food and something that rarely happens with diets—you will eat like a naturally thin person and you will not regain the weight.

Obviously I am impressed with the book. I am going to implement the mindset changes, and I anticipate that this will be a gradual process. Will it work? I don’t know. This blog is primarily about education, books, and Mexico. I only occasionally insert personal posts, but I promise to follow up this one with information on my progress or lack of it. According to Naturally Thin, I can’t put a time table on that because everyone’s body is different. I like that viewpoint, and I like that she recognizes people as individuals.

I would like to extend my thanks to netgalley.com and to Heartland Book Company for giving me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Really makes a lot of sense

This book doesn’t preach a specific amount of food at a specific time, and no more no matter how hungry you may feel. What it does preach makes a lot of sense. I was quite surprised by Jean Antonello’s logical reasoning in “Naturally Thin.” Very glad I read it. It is much more logical, and simple, than any other material I have ever read.

For the first time in 57 years I finally get the whole feast/famine/why you need to eat on a consistent basis! Thank you, Jean Antonello, for finally FINALLY putting it in a way that I could understand it. This book makes the entire "diet" industry superfluous! Truly. Just understanding the reasons why classic diets don't work at keeping the weight off has been eye opening.

Pretty simplistic writing, although the advice – eat ‘real’ food when you are hungry and exercise daily – is good. The assumption is that you’re coming to this book after eating erratically and missing meals for the most part. The entire chapter of affirmations was a bit much.

My experience with Naturally Thin began in February 2008, when I started applying the principles following years of yo-yo dieting. I learned that this was the classic feast or famine cycle that Jean described in her books. I would lose some weight through restriction, then gain it back during a time of weakness when I could no longer rely on will-power. I came to learn that this was my survival instinct, which we all have, inspiring me to eat. The reason for this, Jean explained, is because your body doesn’t know you are trying to diet by deliberately withholding food. Your body is trying to protect your life and knows when you are not getting enough nutrients. It wants to protect you from starvation. I gained plenty of “make-up” weight in the first few month, then stayed the same weight for many, many months. But I believed in the principles so firmly, that I got over the fact I would be much higher in weight until my body was ready to release the excess. It was important for me to get off the feast or famine cycle once and for all. I was at the point I didn’t even know what true hunger felt like. I was tired of micromanaging calories. I really wanted to get back in tune with my body, letting it call the shots, instead of me trying to manipulate and suppress my hunger cues. That had always failed me.

I did lose weight, it was slow, and didn’t start for quite some time. I didn’t care. The feast or famine cycle caused me enough problems, physically, mentally, and emotionally, that having temporary excess weight to carry around was worth it. I did finally begin to lose weight slowly over the next five years. I kept Jean’s books close at hand and had them all underlined and highlighted, and referred to them often over the years. The important things I kept in mind were to eat when you're hungry, stop when you're full, and eat the best quality food you can find. I still live by these principles today.

I would recommend this approach to anyone who has tried dieting, and wasn’t successful. Of course this means practically all dieters, as we know a diet is only successful if you can keep the weight off, long term. Virtually every dieter gains weight back, and even more than they initially lost. So essentially, most diets that are promoted are gimmicks. Jean, an obesity and eating disorder specialist, once said, that every eating disorder she ever encountered, began with a diet. That spoke volumes to me. It became very clear to me that my body was fighting me every time I tried restricting. And I had to say “No more.”

While I’ve continued to put the Naturally Thin eating principles into practice all these years, I must say that I’ve elevated my quality of food to an even higher level than what Jean promotes. I now choose for myself only raw plant-based foods, as I’ve looked into the health aspects of eating meat and cooked food in general, and found the highest quality I can eat is raw fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds, as cooking/heating above 118 degrees destroys important enzymes. But I still eat when hungry, stop when full, eat the best quality foods that I can obtain, and I’ve never felt better. At age 57 I am on zero medications and I feel as though I’ve turned back the clock. Once you comprehend how dieting works, you’ll never go back. And I have Jean Antonello to thank for that. The books she wrote were the catalyst for me, that allowed me to learn the miserable truth about dieting, and take the necessary steps to break free from my dieting path, and to obtain an abundant life I have now, that I didn’t even know was possible.

Yes, it is that time of year, when we all start to think we can do better. We choose new goals. We look for experts to guide us. We are full of desire and optimism (or despair) and some of us are looking for miracle cures.

Jean Antonello is indeed an expert and she has some answers for us but she is the first to tell you that success comes only to those who take responsibility.
You must be ready, be willing to take the steps and learn the system. This is not a quick-drop weight loss plan. Results will vary for EACH individual and this is NOT a diet. It is a lifestyle system.

Much of the book discusses how the body works and why it stores fat. Why so many people who may have short term and even quick weight loss success often end up heavier after their diets. Many weight loss plans tell you obesity is a psychological effect tied to your emotions and your mindset will make all the difference.
This lifestyle plan is centered on the physiological causes of obesity. How and why the body is designed to store fat. This plan is about breaking the cycle, reprogramming the body's natural response.

There are basic lessons included, like learning how to read a label, acknowledge what you are feeding your body and learning to understand your body's communications. There are examples of other theories and weight loss plans and even a list of pros and CONS of this system. A ton of excellent information.

I did have to be careful and not twist some of the explanations for obesity (metabolism decrease and lack of movement motivation) to use them as excuses for not losing weight. I can not just claim that my body and my genetics are against me! That is not taking responsibility.

I accepted a copy of this book from Netgalley to review but the curiosity and opinions are my own. The desire to become healthier is my own. I am grateful for the author sharing her expertise.

As a student who studies nutrition , all I can say after reading this book is - FINALLY! Someone who actually knows what she's talking about!!
To all of you out there who is struggling to lose weight through all kind and sort of idiotic low calories "miracle" diet plans- PLEASE read this book! It might save your mind, your body and , the most important, your health! This book scientifically explains why people get fat , stay fat and struggle so much to get rid of obesity and why most never succeed ! It clearly explains all about the feast - famine phenom and why you need to eat a decent amount of REAL food and not starve yourself in order to lose weight. It's all about chemistry, people.
Jean Antonello offered you a decent amount of knowledge in this book, use it!

This is the by far the best book I have ever read about dieting and the most important book about permanent weight loss that I have ever read. The key word here is "PERMANENT." There are lots of books about dieting, but they focus on short term weight loss, and not permanent weight loss.

I have not found any other book that so thoroughly and logically and scientifically explains why people get fat and stay fat and struggle so much with obesity and why almost no one is ever able to succeed at permanent weight loss. In fact, 95% of dieters gain all the weight they lose within two to five years, and 38% of U.S. adults aged 20 and older are now obese.

AN ACTUAL PROGRAM YOU CAN USE IN YOUR OWN LIFE–In addition to explaining what is really happening with our bodies on the biological level, and why we struggle with weight, the author presents an actual program that she developed and which she presented in her original bestselling book “HOW TO BECOME NATURALLY THIN BY EATING MORE.” That book sold over 250,000 copies and the author received lots of positive feedback from readers who successfully used her “Naturally Thin” approach to weight loss to achieve long-term results.

INCLUDES INFO ON OBESITY RESEARCH & PERSONAL EXPERIENCE OF LONG-TERM PERMANENT WEIGHT LOSS BY AUTHOR–This latest book by author Jean Antonello presents her original teachings about being “naturally thin” as well as the latest research that supports her approach to weight management. She presents a completely logical and believable approach to weight management based upon the biological principles of adaptation, which is the core of the nursing curriculum at the University of Minnesota, where she received her education. The author has been in the field of obesity and eating disorders for over 30 years. She had struggled with her weight and has now maintained her significant weight loss for over 30 years. She does not diet and eats “naturally” getting cues from her own body as to hunger and fullness and what to eat.

ACTUAL TRUE LIFE RESULTS FROM INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE FOLLOWED THE AUTHOR'S ORIGINAL "NATURALLY THIN" PROGRAM WRITTEN ABOUT IN HER FIRST BOOK 28 YEARS AGThe book is full of stories of many who have also achieved great long-term results using the author’s approach. Remember, with weight loss, it is the long-term results that tell the true story. She cites research that does not support the idea that overeating is emotionally drive. In fact, she says overeating is more about biology than psychology. Many overweight people try to avoid food, even subconsciously, and she says that research shows that overweight people, on the whole, actually eat less than people of a normal weight.

IT'S NOT YOUR PSYCHOLOGY, IT'S YOUR BIOLOGY. STOP DIETING AND START COOPERATING WITH YOUR BODY'S SURVIVAL NEEDS.–This book can help you stop condemning yourself and others for what seems to be crazy food addictions, and out-of-control behavior when it comes to food and eating. It explains why we crave high fat and high sugar foods (i.e., pleasure foods) that cause weight gain. It explains binges. It explains food obsession. I received this book from a goodreads giveaway.

This book really spoke to me and my dieting/eating issues. I feel like this book could be the catalyst for last change. It is well written (some minor typos/grammatical errors mostly in the second half) and very well researched. Jean writes with clarity and has a plainspoken tone that clearly conveys the information. Her guidance and recommendations give me hope for recovering my eating habits and losing my extra weight for good. Excellent book if you're interested in this topic.

I won my e-copy through GoodReads.

This is a good reminder book. Most of us know the points that are made in this book. When you read it, you'll think "Oh, I know that." There are some points that might be new. But like I said, this is more of a reminder book - eat when you are hungry not because the clock says it is time, know that your body is going to go through a "famine" stage if you don't give it enough of the balanced nutrition that it wants, etc. Your healthy weight may not be my healthy weight. Everyone is different; and our bodies will decide that for us. Overall, a good book with healthy suggestions and reminders of what needs to be done to stay healthy.

Good insights into how eating RIGHT, and eating ENOUGH, is far better than following the diet of the day. This is a common sense approach to eating, losing weight, and keeping it off permanently, backed up by science. The science parts, as always, are a little dry, but this book has some very valid points and is well worth the read. No more yo-yo diets! No more feeling guilty for eating real food! Many thanks to NetGalley for the arc.

I was happy to receive a copy of Naturally Thin in a Good Reads giveaway. This is completely different than any other weight management book I've encountered. Instead, the book goes into detail about why we gain weight, why we crave certain foods, and examines the links between psychological issues and heredity and weight gain. It advocates natural foods and getting back in touch with your body's hunger signals. Overall, it's incredibly inspiring. I'm excited to use the themes discussed in the book.

Also included is how to read labels, understanding your body, etc. I thought the addition of people who have followed her suggestions are doing. There are moments in my weight loss journey where I knew what I was doing was wrong but there are so many more moments where I felt like everything I was doing was right. Since going through menopause I feel like I am doing that right now. I'm doing everything I've done in my past and nothing is working. Actually, I'm gaining and am the biggest I've ever been in my entire life at the writing of this review.

Naturally Thin by Jean Antonello was written for people like me; people who want better, want healthier, want this time to be the last time, and want to lose weight the right way.

From the moment I picked up this book I knew this was something different. Within the first few chapters I was saying, "Wow! That's me!" until it became redundant. You can tell from her writing that Ms. Antonello has been there and she knows what she's talking about. She discusses why our bodies are hard-wired to hold onto fat and where many diets have it all wrong. I love all of the stories included in the book from those that have been down this road before and their eventual victory. What they had to do to gain that weight loss freedom is very inspiring and encouraging!

My only complaint is that this book is a tad on the long side and the information, though helpful, can get a little repetitive, but this book is perfect when used as a reference or when you need motivation.

Naturally Thin is highly recommended for anyone who is done with yo-yo dieting, wanting to break the diet cycle, and is willing to put forth the effort to get onto the road to lasting health and weight loss. This book is not a magic pill or a plan that will have you losing 20 pounds in 24 hours, but it will instead help you break free from food addictions, off the diet mentality, and on to lasting weight loss and freedom, if you put what you read to practice.

*I received a complimentary copy of this book from the Heartland Book Company and NetGalley in exchange for an honest, unbiased review. All opinions are my own.

Weight loss and control is a preoccupation for the majority of Americans, and--while I appreciate that this book's author offers honest advice: eat good food, only eat when you're hungry, exercise appropriately, and STOP dieting--there is nothing new in Naturally Thin for anyone who has been keeping abreast of weight loss studies in even a casual way.

That dieting ultimately leads to a slower metabolism, binge eating, and weight gain has been a given for a while now. If the reader is unaware of the science of these principles and might enjoy some anecdotal weight loss stories, this book could prove helpful. Otherwise, while the author seems well intentioned, Naturally Thin is not going to add to the discussion.

Full Disclosure--Net Gallery and the publisher provided me with a digital ARC of this book. This is my honest review.

This book is very well written with a lot - a LOT - of research. However, I found it went on for far too long and when I was hit with yet more science, I started to switch off and had to force myself to finish it. The other aspect I struggled with was the lack of detail, such as the *names* of the established and existing diets discussed and discarded (rather than just a description). Every other diet or slimming book I've read isn't afraid to name the competition. Perhaps I've become accustomed to television programmes that are more than happy to name and shame. And finally, the case study names came across as made-up and non-existent. I may be wrong, but this is how they came across.
I do feel that naming the diets and having pictures of those people interviewed, with actual facts and figures, would have made this book much more interesting for me. In particular, I'd like to see genuine success stories with real pictures and before-and-after experiences.
Saying all of this, before I started to lose concentration, I did feel I was learning something new and understanding why so many of my own diets and eating regimes have failed.
Very interesting, but could be more concise.

Naturally Thin has been a game changer. The program is based on scientific studies and gives scientific reasons for the feast and famine cycle. After years of dieting and not being able to maintain weight loss, the reasons finally make sense! My body does behave as described in the book, and now I understand why. The Naturally Thin program is not an easy switch to make from years of dieting , but one I believe is necessary in order to learn how to eat well and manage weight in the long run. I prefer this book over Intuitive Eating for managing weight since quality of food is really emphasized and discussed here, and more scientific information is provided as well. #goodreadsgiveaway

I won this books in a Goodreads giveaway. This book is a good reminder of key principles that are solid advice. There is nothing complex about the author's approach. Eat quality foods. Don't ever get too hungry. Set yourself up for success with planning. Listen to your body. I enjoyed a few of her client's stories which helped to make this an interesting read. I was not impressed with the 31 day plan however. I found it to be to superficial and did not seem to build. I continue to thinking about the concepts in this book after finishing it, so it has impact.
