THIS POSTSCRIPT to Beryl Pogson’s teaching of the Work is a glimpse of the period in the 1960s and ’70s when her study groups met at The Dicker on the South Downs of England. A “postscript” does not seem an altogether fitting epilogue to what was basically an oral transmission of ideas and instructions. Still, Mrs Pogson was also an author of books and articles that are highly appreciated by those with an interest in Shakespeare or in esoteric philosophies, and this reminiscence can hardly rank as a further chapter to her enlightening work. So let it be a postscript.
In case the term “Work” is unfamiliar, perhaps a note on the teaching is also in order. I hope a portrayal of the Work will gradually emerge in the following pages. Meanwhile, let’s simply accept that the title signifies aptly and frankly a system of ideas that commits its adherents to a lifetime of demanding work.
