Carter didn't believe in true mates... until he met Brand One scent was all it took. There was one big problem... when he met Brand, he was at a prenatal visit with his mate, Aaron, for their first child. And Brand was Aaron's doctor. Carter wasn't going to let the pull he felt toward Brand ruin what he had with Aaron, though, and Brand kept silent, so he let it fade.
Six years later, a car crash changed Carter's life It tore Aaron from him and broke his little boy in ways they are still trying to heal two years later. Carter's had two years of grieving, and he's ready to see if Brand and fate will give him another chance.
Brand absolutely believes in true mates... and Carter isn't his When Carter approaches him, Brand has no idea what he's talking about. Brand's never experienced that lightning from the sky moment, the fireworks, the scent--but he wants it. He wants it all. And he's not going to take anything less than everything, no matter how attractive Carter is.
If Carter can't win Brand over the easy way, he's determined to do it the old fashioned way: with lots of wooing. But unknown to them, Brand has come to the attention of a group that poses a danger to all shifters everywhere, and their problems are just beginning.
Unexpected Mateis a 61,000 word novel with pregnancies galore, danger lurking in the shadows, and finding healing in those you love.
This book did a great job with two questions I've always had about fated mates stories: 1) what would you do (or most people be expected to do) if they met their fated mate while already mated, and 2) is there ever a case where only one partner would realize their mate? This was a great emotional response to the first question and an inventive approach to the second. Loyalty and love kept Carter from acting on his realization that Brand was his mate, but a tragic accident has opened the possibility to be with his fated mate. Carter has grieved his first mate Aaron for two years, two years of waiting for Brand to acknowledge their bond. When he gets up the courage to stop waiting and approaches Brand, Carter is floored by Brand's denial that they are true mates. This sets up a mystery that's really fun to see unfold, which has a very interesting explanation. This is by far the best and meatiest of the series thus far. It is far better edited than the others and the characters are much deeper than in previous books. I liked both leads but really loved Brand, loved his personality and the way he related to people. He's a very warm, engaging person. Jax, Carter's young son was another good character. Too often writers make the kid sickly sweet or unrealistically precocious; this kid felt like a real kid. There was a part of the plot that really surprised me, something only hinted at in the blurb, that really explodes the possibilities and complications for the series. This meant that, while the Carter, Brand, and the kids are all wrapped up storywise, there is a major chiffhanger for the series at the end. I would like to point out that, unlike earlier books, we got more of the actual pregnancy (including some pregnancy humor) and the actual birth scene. Much more satisfying! So all around a much better book in a series that I already really liked!
Great storyline great dynamics between the characters that builds up to a excellent story. I can't wait for the next book to find out why Sean came to speak with the Alpha.
Book started a bit slow, but then picked with great sexual tension, romantic situations and a fantastic set of characters that you really need to know what’s going to happen to them!
This book was okay. Again, these alphas are not what I'm used to, they tend to be more submissive than the omegas. But I'll continue to read this series.
