Guide Your Mind, Guard Your Heart, Grace Your Tongue

Rate this book
Every single one of us with a beating heart has spoken words “under the influence” of warped feelings and slurred thinking. And we soon wish we had the magical power to take those words back. We especially regret the hurtful words we have spoken to those we love the most and know the best. This book may just be the solution.
Carol McLeod reveals that before the words are spoken, they brew in our hearts and are formed in our minds. It’s our thoughts and emotions that determine what words come out of our mouths. Guide Your Mind, Guard Your Heart, Grace Your Tongue is an innovative blueprint that will enable you to take control of your thoughts and feelings in order to grace your tongue. You won’t find pat answers here, but rather powerful strategies based on the Word of God to reroute disordered thinking and cure rotten emotions so your words can be humbly grateful instead of grumbly hateful .

This book, aside from a few caveats below, was one of the best books on spiritual growth that I've read in a very long time. If you loved Elizabeth George's "Loving God with All Your Mind," this is a great book to dive a bit deeper. The way Ms. McLeod puts her heart into the heart of Scripture and shows a commitment to LIVING that scripture is exactly why this book got 5 stars when, at first, I thought I wouldn't finish it.
One of my favorite quotes shows what I mean:

“It must be absolute truth alone for you to spend any time at all thinking about it. If you don’t know that something is fundamentally true, then throw it in the trash! If you can’t verify and justify a certain piece of mental information, then do not spend another millisecond letting it rest in the recesses of your brain. If a thought is not true, then it does not pass the litmus test of belonging in your brain.”

By the time I'd read that, I was thankful that I'd requested a review copy!

Problems I had with Guide Your Mind?

These were a few things that really alarmed me:
First, she wrote as if she expects God to speak to us, outside His Word, and we are to speak those words to others. The way it is described sounds very much like extra-Biblical revelation.

However, later reading on that did make me think that she meant God speaking the Word to us. Then, later on, an anecdote she used about God speaking to her mother could not be her using “God speaking to you” as “Remembering what God said through His Word about this type of situation.”

Additionally…
Her section on how with the Holy Spirit, we can think like God does, understand “just as Jesus does,” and have “divine creativity,” is what nearly made me put the book down. They may have been written with different ideas in mind, but I couldn’t help but feel like I was hearing Satan in the garden assuring us that we can “be like God” et cetera. I understand the reasoning behind why she would say that, but I couldn’t swallow it.

And finally, her use of miraculous is rather loose to me.

The rest, however? Surprisingly and delightfully excellent. While I wouldn’t give this book to a new or immature Christian without some warnings (above), this is one of the best books I’ve seen on these topics. Most of what she has to say is sound, and I will be going over the above in the Word, with the Scriptures she shared, and I’ll be comparing it all to context, the Greek, and what I’ve previously understood to be truth to be certain that I am not wrong! Because I never want to pretend that I’ve cornered the market of Biblical understanding!

This may be the best book I have read in years on what my Christian life is to be like. McLeod's insights into the mind, heart, and mouth are stunning. I was shocked to realize how far my Christian life is from what God has designed.

But McLeod did not leave me helpless. She provided great teaching on how to reign in out of control thoughts and fill my mind with the truth of the Word. She helped me learn how to develop healthy emotional responses. She enlightened me as to what my mouth was created for and challenged me with the rules she has for her own mouth. She presented the clearest teaching I have ever seen on the spirit and soul. That section alone makes it worth reading this book.

I highly recommend this book. But read it only if you are willing to be challenged time and again. McLeod reminds you that you can life a Christlike life through the power of the Holy Spirit. If you really want to honor God with your thoughts, emotions, and words, this is the book for you. Excellent teaching, great challenges, and lots of practical suggestions are included to help you think, love, and speak as God desires.

I received a digital copy of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Even the best Christians have their faults. After all, Jesus is the only one who ever was, or ever will be perfect. This book is a great tool for Christians today to use, even if they think it doesn't apply to them. Guess what they will find out? It DOES apply. Every chapter will open their eyes, as it mine, to the things they need to focus on. It will force people to examine themselves and the way they think, act and speak. For those of you who have ever thought, oh man, I just stuck my foot in my mouth big time, this book will help you with that among so many other things. I am quick to speak, and most of the time without thinking first. 9 times out of 10, these reactions are not in a loving and nurturing way. Some of the times I have noticed it, but if I'm being completely honest, this book showed me that sometimes even though I don't think I'm reacted incorrectly, others do.

This book is an eye opened for sure. I think it would be a great group study tool so that individuals can help each other through their difficulties, and grow together in the Word. Take your time reading, and have your bible nearby. Make notes, make changes, and allow the Holy Spirit to help you! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

McLeod’s latest book is a worthwhile and practical book for Christians to read to have a more fulfilling life living for God. There are numerous scriptures, analogies and practical advice to incorporate this study into one’s life, along with the author’s personal experiences as she grew in her Christian faith to be more like Jesus. McLeod’s writing is easy to read and will tug at your heart as you realize your failings in living a fuller life that God wants for each one of His children. The book is divided into sections with each chapter ending with a personal application section and questions for readers to aid in the topic of guide your mind, guard your heart and grace your tongue. Having a journal and set of colored pencils/markers will be useful while reading and answering the questions to recall specific changes or applications the reader might want to study further or start implementing in their life. Guide Your Mind, Guard Your Heart Grace Your Tongue is one of the best spiritual growth books I have ever read.

This is a decent nonfiction book trying to help you learn to be more like God in the way we act and talk. I especially enjoyed the third part about holding our tongue. I know that I too am bad about what I say sometimes. This makes you think about many aspects of God in your life. I received a copy of this book from Celebratelit for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

GUIDE YOUR MIND GUARD YOUR HEART GRACE YOUR TONGUE
There are many valuable lessons found between the covers of this book. I found myself easily relating to different sections. It made me reflect and see the changes I have made through the years and what I need to continue to work on.
Words can be damaging. I am a parent and I have regrets of some of the words I used while I was raising them.

I have always cautioned others (and me) to be careful what you say in anger. Once the words are out there, you can't take them back. The recipient will never forget.. the damage is done.

Carol Brown McLeod wrote this amazing book with humor, insight and Biblical teachings. I found it enlightening and thought provoking. I enjoyed it so much that I subscribed to her blog - A Cup of Tea with Carol.

I recommend this book to all my friends and family. I received this free to review but I would highly recommend purchasing this as we all can learn something from it.

Guide your Mind, Guard your Heart, Grace your Tongue by Carol Burton McLeod

The mind is such a powerful thing, and if left uncontrolled, causes all kinds of damage. This book shares practical advice on how to control the thoughts we think, put a guard on our heart and be careful of the words that we speak. The truths shared here are ones that all Christians should be living.

Author Carol Burton McLeod shares Scripture, real-life stories and practical application questions to help Christians in their spiritual growth. She offers strategies for countering the lies of the Enemy of our souls. It is clear that she has a desire to teach Christians how to live victorious lives.

A couple of caveats. . .

In the chapter “Are There Two of Me”, she talks about the war between the flesh and spirit, however, it sounds like she is saying that the spirit is good and the soul is bad. I assumed I had heard her wrong and read further only to see her mention that a particular bad action came from the soul, not the spirit. I have a problem with this because even David prayed for God to “renew a right spirit within me”. If he had need of a renewed, right spirit, then his spirit was not well and pleasing to God, which contradicts what the author was saying. This said, the concepts that she was teaching are valid, as long as you don’t equate the good with the spirit or bad with the soul.

There were also some hints that we can expect God to speak to us outside of His word. She mentions a time that God spoke to her mother. While I had had times I felt that God has spoken to me to draw me to Himself in salvation, it is vital that we listen to the things He has already spoken in His Word and let that be the guide for our lives. The Bible is complete; there is no need for God to add to what He has said.

In “A Brand-New Brain”, she says “We have the miraculous ability to receive the wisdom of the ages.” and “We can have God-sized dreams and divine creativity in our pea-sized brains!” This sounds very New Agey to me, and I caution the reader to not interpret that to mean that we can understand mysteries that are not explained in Scripture or to think that we can be “like God” (think Garden of Eden). He has promised us wisdom if we ask, and has promised us the “mind of Christ”, but not extra-Biblical revelation.

As with everything you read or Christian speakers that you listen to, be sure that you go into them with your Bible right there, and if something is being taught that is a new concept to you, check and make sure that is what the Bible is saying. Read the verses before and after those presented to see it in context. Don’t assume that if the author is a Christian, everything they share is consistent with the Bible’s teachings. Be the like Bereans in Acts 17 and search the Scriptures to see if these things be so!

I looked everywhere in the book for my name because I was sure she was addressing me. The book was meant for me to read and it sure did make me do some attitude adjustment. That silly mind of us plays tricks on us everyday. Sometimes I get this thought in my head and then think, "Where did that come from?" I always imagined my life growing up to be like "Leave it to Beaver" where the mom is always dressed up, house is perfect and each meal is wonderful and enjoyed by the entire family. Well it was all in my head, because my life was nothing like that. My mind told me how unwanted I was and how stupid I was. Yes, I grew up believing that and even today I still think that.

I'm hoping all that will slowly change as I absorb the wonderful tools the author has given to have a healthy brain. One of my favorite verses is found in Romans 12:2 which says, " And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." I am encouraged by that verse because it reminds me that I can renew my mind all the time just by reading His word and being in His presence.

The book is divided up into different topics and has an application at the end of every chapter. I loved how the author gives examples that you can apply to your life and scriptures to read to help you grow and start having a good mind filled with joy. One of the chapters I really liked was about why God gave us a tongue. It certainly wasn't to reject people, say unkind things to them or judge them." Our tongue is to praise Him, to speak His words, and to encourage others." That really woke me up just reading that. I hope everyone will get a chance to read this book and allow it to renew your mind and love others unconditionally.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit." The review is my own opinion.

I opened this book and started reading, and was able to connect with this author immediately! Her style of writing touched my heart, and I felt like she must have read my mind. This book has so much to say, so much that I need to hear! It addresses some of the deep needs in my life right now–that of dealing with having a proper view of one’s self, and allowing Jesus to be in control of and at the center of my thoughts.

Keeping one’s house clean by spending a short amount of time daily is compared to the idea of doing similar cleaning in one’s mind and heart. It doesn’t take so much time if we keep after it, but if we let it go for too long, those corners can become full of dirt, dust, & grime.

A quote: “If we take even one day off from the intensive process of keeping a pure mind, we will be in danger of losing the battle altogether. but while the process of sanitizing our brain may be exacting and frustrating, the results will be absolutely fabulous!”

My heart’s desire is that I might learn more of focusing on what Jesus wants of me, and keep Him at the center of all I do and think.

I’m not even close to finishing the reading of this book yet. There is just way too much here. So much to meditate on. As I continue reading, and find new things that must be shared, I will update this review… 😉 It is important to remember, however, when reading a book of this nature--this is not the Bible, and should not be treated as such--anything read in this book must match up with what the Bible says.

It didn’t take me long, after I started reading this book to feel that it was written just for me. Carol McLeod hits the nail firmly on the head. Her style is simple and straight to the point, no holding back, no soft soaping anything. She repetitively begs the reader to “be honest”, because so many times when we read books like this, it is so easy to flip past the hard parts and to pretend it’s not about me, but about everyone else we know who needs it.

I have a few quibbles about some of the Christianese, such as “asking Jesus into your heart” when the Bible clearly says “repent and believe”. Also mentioning fulfilling God’s dreams for us. I know God is personified many times in the Bible, but we never see Him having dreams for us. He has clear plans and paths for us to follow, not some ethereal fantasy, where He hopes we’ll do the right thing. There are some other issues in grammar and spelling, but overall, though it is well worth reading and learning, it certainly emphasizes repentance in mind, heart and speech (whether verbal or written). The author also talks about hearing from God, which is a sticky thing, because a lot of people say “God told me this.” and “God told me that.” and many times they are very wrong. God speaks to us in His Word and through our consciences. I think Carol McLeod is a little vague about this, so I would be apprehensive about recommending this book for people who are new to living the Christian life, lest they twist or misinterpret some things in the book that seem a little vague or not very well clarified.

Guide Your Mind, Guard Your Heart, Grace Your Tongue is an excellent book, dealing with the influence the mind and the heart have on our tongues. How many of us need a book to convict us about that? I loved her take, the way she used verses, anecdotes, and comparisons to make points that were Biblical and well-explained. It's not a light read, but something that is meant to be savored in small doses while you deal with what God convicts you about.

Because yes, you will be convicted. You'll learn and hopefully grow, as I'm sure the author intends. This book has practical advice to protect your mind and heart from the lies of the devil so that we can grace our tongue with the truths of God. Each chapter ends with questions to personally apply what you've learned. I've always liked that because it adds a moment of reflection.

I highly recommend this book, and I'm giving it 5 stars. I was given a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a review.

My Review
I would describe Guide your Mind, Guard your Heart, Grace your Tongue as a Christian personal development type book. When I went to review this book on goodreads I saw that the author has several other books that sound like good ones to put on my to read list. This book is a real eye opener. Being a Christian does not make life easy and I think it is our responsibility to learn what we can do different to not make things more difficult than what they have to be. This book is written an understandable way. This will be a book that I will return to and read again and probably gain new insight from it the next time I read it cause that is how I find it to be with most personal development books like this. I would highly encourage you to take the time to read this. Great book. Disclaimer: I was given a complimentary copy of this book but all thoughts and opinions are my honest ones.

A comprehensive treatise on the hows and whys of Biblically controlling one’s mind, heart and mouth. Excellent study questions, plenty of practice opportunities and suggestions for allowing God’s word to penetrate your thoughts, heart and mind in transforming ways. Guide Your Mind, Guard Your Heart, Grace Your Tongue, as the title implies, is not a quick read but is one I emphatically encourage readers to take plenty of time to earnestly read, ponder and prayerfully consider as an exceptional opportunity for meaningful spiritual growth.

This would be an ideal book for both individual and group study. A possible opportunity for regular spiritual self-check and tune up, too!

What an affirming read. The title really says it all. The book goes through how our mind should be guided, how our heart should be guarded, and how our tongue should pour out grace. The chapters also outline why these things are important and also give examples of when things have gone right and when things did not. The book brims with Scripture and spiritual truths in each chapter to ground the reader in His Word as the source for guided minds, guarded hearts, and grace-filled tongues.
The writing style is easy to read and follow. Anyone who is looking for encouragement and guidance on the mind-heart-tongue struggle will learn much from this book.

I was given a complimentary copy of the book from the author and Whitaker House through Celebrate Lit Tours. I was not required to write a favorable review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and subjective.

"Guide your Mind, Guard your Heart, Grace your Tongue " by Carol Burton McLeod is a really easy book to read and understand, but it isn't a book to just be read, it is a book that should be read and imbedded into your mind and soul and then followed.

I have read this book without really stopping to ponder all it says for the sake of this writing this review, but I can honestly say I will reread and studying this book more deeply. After each chapter there is a section called personal application and I intend to study and do them as well.

This book is exactly what the title says!

I have lots of things underlined in this book. One thing I especially like is that she backs up her thoughts and ideals with Scripture.

I was given a complimentary copy by the author and Celebrate Lit. These opinions are my own.

This is a wonderful book filled with so much truth and great advice.

If you have read Battle Field of the Mind by Joyce Meyer I am sure you would like this book. This book takes things even deeper as you dive into how the heart and tongue can be controlled as well as the mind.

This quote from the book grabbed me: p. 128 “God gave you a heart to revolutionize your earthly existence, so that you would know the joy of experiencing heaven even living on earth.” Good stuff.

I highly recommend this book to everyone, we all need this wake-up call.

A copy of this book was given to me through the Celebrate Lit Team. All opinions are my own.

You may think that your faith is strong but after reading this book you will see true strength in your following of the faith. I was amazed at the details and thoughtfulness that the author depicted in this guide. I also agreed with her on many levels, finding that we are all in need of this book. Faith isn’t a one way street, you must walk and talk the Word. But do we truly know how to do so and be happy?

Readers that struggle with the negative emotions will grow from reading this book, you will see there is ways to make the light shine always. I personally recommend this book to those seeking a stronger faith, and a way to be more faith-filled.

Guide your mind, Guard your heart, Grace your tongue

I really liked the way this book is written, it really made me think. It is in three sections. My favorite part was the Heart section. Great chapter on the fear factor, and anger. The part about worrying has some really good points, I think we all have a problem with that. I usually don’t like non fiction books but this one was very inspiring, a lot of verses to back up the what is being brought out in the book. Also at the end of each chapter there is a Personal Application section for us to apply the things we learn in our life. I received an advanced copy of the book from Celebrate Lit.
