Her task? Keep the humans from learning about magic at all costs. Even if it means doing the one thing she’s worst at - dealing with other people.
Detective Mina Sharma is determined to prove herself.
Her new promotion is the one thing going right in her life as a newly-divorced single mother, and she’s not going to let anything stop her from solving her first case.
Not even the aloof and enigmatic blonde with crimson eyes telling her to drop it if she values her life.
Especially not when this Caroline is just as much of a puzzle to solve as the case itself.
And Mina has always loved puzzles.
You’ll love this F/F urban fantasy because the fast-paced writing will keep you hooked until the end.
Some say she's an ancient creature of nightmare that was unleashed from beneath the ocean, come to devour the souls of men. Others say that she's a cosmic being from the beyond the stars that has taken corporeal form to learn our ways for some unknown end...
In truth, L.C. Mawson lives in a tower in the middle of a haunted forest, far from civilisation and is definitely not a witch who curses those who trespass upon her land. And she definitely cannot turn into a dragon that flies over cities in the dead of night and whose cries are often mistaken for an approaching storm. Where did you hear that? That's absurd...
The only contact she has with humanity is publishing books every so often, which is definitely just for fun and not part of an ancient contract with a trickster god.
I wanted to read something outside of my usual go-to lesfic stories, and came across this urban fantasy themed novel that's the start of a much larger series and part of the Snowverse kingdom or universe? From what I gather, LC Mawson has written A LOT of books that explore these worlds, so it's unfortunate I can't elaborate on any of those storylines and give this a bit more gravitas.
So, for this non-fantasy lover, I actually really enjoyed Target. I got to meet Lady Caroline, one of the MCs, who's a 'Royal Cleaner' on Earth tasked with keeping magic a secret from humans by making sure that Demons who inhabit Earth stay out of trouble - or else they get tossed to the Underworld. The local police department lets her do her job since she takes over the 'weird' cases and they don't ask any questions... until one of the new detectives, Mina, causes a stir about a case of hers that Caroline takes over. The chief allows Mina to tag along with Caroline to see how she does her job, and Caroline has a hard time keeping both the Demons at bay and Mina from discovering the secret of magic.
Romance blossoms between the two women, and even though it's the central theme, the novel is action-packed and short (novella-ish), so the relationship isn't dwelled on in every chapter. I found the references to Caroline's autism (the term "Litcorde" is used where she's from, so you don't immediately understand the meaning when it's first used) interesting enough, and it was a reason for a lot of the early miscommunication between the two women.
I'm sure I missed a few references to other books that are part of the Snowverse and some 'inside' jokes, but it didn't detract from the story itself. The book is fast-paced, and pretty light reading despite having to keep track of the different worlds/characters in this fantasy, but best of all, it doesn't stop at a cliff hanger where you're desperately downloading the next book in the series to find out what happens next. I'm tempted to start reading Book 2 soon, just to get more of Lady Caroline and Detective Mina's love story.
This story kind of assumes you have read the author's other series, where Caroline Raven was a secondary character. Events and other characters are referenced, but you have no idea who or what they are. For example, one character is said to be a Litcorde. It sounds pretty big, but there's no explanation what a Litcorde actually is. A Google search turned up the author's Wattpad page, where Book 1 of her other series can be read. Just so you know: a Litcorde is somekind of witch. Alrighty.
I started to struggle with the story very early on. The writing feels very stilted, and a lot of it is tell. I gave up after a scene where both characters are in a car and being shot at. They stop, get out and inspect the damage. Really? I would venture to guess (and I admit, I've never been shot at) your first reaction would be seeking some cover. A brief battle scene follows, where Caroline blows her cover and they have a heart to heart in a pub over a bottle of whiskey.
Mina listens, downs her drink and shrugs it all off (it was just magic, and that healing potion that insta healed her wound is also nothing to be amazed about), but not before she told Caroline she is a lesbian, which prompts Caroline to get distracted by those kissable lips. There was not a single indication beforehand where there was some kind of attraction between the two women.
At that point, I closed the book in my Kindle and called it a day.
Target: A F/F Snowverse Novel (The Royal Cleaner Book 1) - a review by Rosemary Kenny
After being a minor featuring character in the previous L C Mawson series' novels about Freya and The Almosts, Head Cleaner Lady Caroline now gets her own trilogy set in the Snowverse Kingdom. When I say 'Cleaner' I mean that Lady C and her 'crew' are officially tasked (she's taken an oath to that effect), with preventing the parallel world of humans from finding out about magic. That results in them having to take over and 'clean up' any difficult/unsolved police cases that are thrown their way. So far so not too bad, but when Demons are involved and to top it all a female human detective's assigned to shadow Lady Caroline closely, she resents it intensely at first...after all, with limited resources and a kingdom she's sworn to protect on her hands, the last thing she needs is a human breathing down her neck and waiting for her to fail! But is the case in hand the only thing the detective wants to investigate? And how will Lady Caroline react if her emotions get in the way of doing her duty? Get this 'fairy tale' like no other for yourself to find out - then tell all your friends too!
I have taken my sweet time to get to the Royal Cleaner series, but I am kinda glad that I did. The Royal Cleaner series should definitely be read after the Almosts and somewhere around the last few books of the Freya Snow series. I love how Mawson's books always interact with each other if they are in the same universe, but it is definitely a blessing and a curse if you are trying to avoid major spoilers.
Caroline is a Demon Royal who runs the Royal Cleaners. She is determined to keep humanity safe from the mischievous Demons and their king who seems to want humans to know about magic again. The last time that humans knew about magic, it resulted in a war, and a magical woman having to reverse time to save the world. Caroline was there, and she doesn't want that to happen ever again.
The police have started to get unknowingly involved in the Demon cases, and Caroline knows she will have to take over the cases to save them. One detective in particular, Mina, doesn't want to give up her case to some strange, cold woman. Caroline ends up being forced to work with her, and the last thing she needs is to fall for her on the job.
I think that this series is going to take the place of the Aspects for me while I wait for Hate and Love to get it together. I absolutely fell in love with both Caroline and Mina in this story. Caroline has been through a lot, and she doesn't want others to get close to her. It seems to her that every person she gets close to either dies or isn't close to her anymore. Mina is a divorcee with a child who doesn't really give herself time to get close to anyone. Even as they are drawn together, Caroline instinctively pushes away. Humans can't know about magic, and Mina's entire family could be targeted by the Demons. But just like she wasn't pushed off of her case easily, Mina won't allow Caroline to slip away easily either.
The plot of this book moves quickly, as most LC Mawson books do, but I felt even more immersed than I usually do with her books. I also loved the character development. Caroline hasn't trusted anyone for years, but Mina will not allow her to do this mission on her own. She has to get past her usual inability to be social, and truly work with a partner for the first time. ever.
The worldbuilding of Snowverse was also incredible. I hadn't seen too much of Demon politics and people before, simply because the Freya Snow series didn't focus on it. I hope that if we ever get more books from Damon's POV, we will be able to see more of this. I wanted to learn more about Caroline's past, where she was fully immersed in Demon culture. I didn't get to see that much of it in this book, but I saw even more in the prequel.
I would recommend this series to anyone looking for a new f/f fantasy-romance novel with very diverse characters and an addictive storyline.
I received an advance copy of this book and this is my voluntary review.
so this is pretty much caroline and mina’s pov of before, during, and a little after the last book in the almosts trilogy. and i enjoyed it. probably more than the almost trilogy, honestly. as much as i loved kara’s sarcasm and deadpan, caroline is such an interesting, entertaining, and charming character.
the rep is great, too. aside from the characters who were in the almosts trilogy who show up near the end (kara is an autistic aromantic pansexual woman, ada is a gay woman, and rachel is an unlabeled queer woman), caroline is an autistic pansexual woman, mina is a lesbian, and sas is an autistic trans man.
when mina calls murderers “sickos,” caroline calls her out; “acts like these are not born from mental illness, and perpetuating the idea that they are only perpetuates stigma against a particularly vulnerable group.” i love love love seeing this.
despite calling out the ableism in saying murderers and evil people are sick, there are still other ableist language throughout. such as slurs and using disability as metaphors. and this moment: “i just thought that she was kind of a bitch at first. she was so distant, and monotone and she never made eye contact...” i hate it!!! not everyone is neurotypical, mina!!! and like, she has an autistic friend, and still thinks that people who show traits of it are just heartless bitches? really?
when mina calls caroline’s methods “sherlock bullshit” and says that she appears to have “walked into some kind of bullshit cop drama where there’s a rude, autistic-coded genius detective who can figure out a crime scene through bullshit mind powers” and caroline mumbles, “it’s not coded if it’s canon...” and it’s just nice seeing an autistic author address and poke fun at that. and kind of going meta with caroline saying she’s canonically autistic??? awesome.
“i started out making chocolate chip ones, i like to keep my hands busy while i think over problems, and then i had too many to myself, so i thought i would bring them to share today. but then i realised that a lot of the ingredients might cause problems if you had dietary restrictions. so i made another batch where i substituted all of the dairy, but then i mostly used stuff like nut butters, and i realised you might have a nut allergy... i’ll admit, it kind of snowballed from there...” caroline being charming as hell.
caroline’s pansexuality actually being mentioned rather than danced around:
“‘i’m not exactly picky on matters of gender.’ ‘is that a demon thing?’ ‘it’s a me thing. though hearing the way some humans talk of pansexuality, i can’t fault you for thinking that way.’ mina shook her head. ‘sorry, that was... i shouldn’t have... i should have known better.’ caroline shook her own head as she realised that her tone hadn’t been light and sarcastic enough. it might have even come across bitter... ‘no, i... that was a joke.’”
This spin-off from the Freya Snow series involves Lady Caroline, head of the Royal Cleaners. Her job is to ensure magic doesn't attract the attention of Humans and she's been thrown a curveball. Caroline and her office take "the weird cases" over from the police without any fuss or questions until a new detective starts at the department. The detective doesn't like being told what to do and doesn't like unanswered questions. When she's told to hand over her new "weird" case she gets permission from the chief to shadow Caroline on the investigation. Exactly what Caroline doesn't want, a Human near magic. Or near her because there are sparks between them that are dangerous for the secrecy of magic.
We were introduced to Caroline and Mina in "The Almost" However this is Caroline and Mina's story. We start out sorta hating each other as Caroline takes Mina's case away from her(she's a detective). Caroline is forced to work with Mina and all hell breaks loose. This is a mystery wrapped up in a romance novel. I was given an advance copy by the author but I would have paid for this book and highly recommend this book to everyone.
This is a beautifully done story which nicely tied into LC Mawson's Freya Snow and The Almosts stories. Lady Caroline is great as a leading character in her own right, and this book delivers her POV in a nicely plotted story full of characters that will be loved by anyone who has read and enjoyed this author's books. As a standalone story I'd give it 5 stars. Together with those other books I regret not having more stars to give.
This really speaks to you in a personal way about love, acceptance, secrets, honor and the value of friends and family. There was some magic and suspense with strong female characters. I felt like yelling at a few people at times and others I felt like my heart was being squeezed. I've got to hand it to L.C. Mawson, I love the way she weaves the world of fantasy to make it so real.
Another enjoyable read by L.C. Mawson. I own several of her books but had never managed to read one until lately. This is my third and my second today. An intricately and tightly woven story-line made for a page-turning read. I've already started book 2 in the series since the first 2 were so good.
This story is Lady Caroline's perspective of one of the Almost's series. I have to say I was not expecting the "other side" of another story! It was a great. Looking forward to the next installment.
Great read. Touched each emotion...friendship, love, family, self-discovery & acceptance. Very enjoyable storyline and characters. Looking foreword to next book.
This is an urban fantasy female/female romance between a demon who has to stop magic from becoming known to humans (and stop demons from murdering people to do just that) and a police detective new to town who has some questions about how she handles her cases.
I did like Mina and Caroline as characters and I really liked how they met and had their differences, as well as how Caroline had to work around not telling Mina about magic (with a very high penalty so there was a good reason why she didn't just tell her, rather than 'she won't believe me'). Mina's lack of understanding about this, despite knowing the penalty, was extremely irritating however. Especially after she comes head to head with demons, comes off the worse, and still thinks that she, personally, could handle it. I would have liked more of a gradual build up to their romance but I did like it in the end.
However, despite the book being the first in a series, it's apparently a spin-off of another series so a lot of the build up for the world and magic system is in there. There was enough to get by in this book but I definitely felt like I was missing some context/backstory throughout. I'm not particularly tempted to carry on with this series but if the second book comes up in another sale or one of the other series, then I may pick it up!
Magic is real, but the penalty for knowing this is death. Can our heroine keep her new partner from learning this hidden truth?
While this is book one in the series, it is also part of the author's large Snowverse world. This is the first book I have read by the author and I had no problems following along with the story. All of the elements are explained in sufficient detail (without revealing all by any means) that new readers should feel right at home. Readers familiar with the larger Snowverse saga might pick up references that I missed, but they are not needed to enjoy this story.
And if you like urban fantasy with just a touch of romance, than you should enjoy this one very much. The story and setting are well developed, which makes sense considering how long the author has written in this world. The characters are also solid, with realistic motivations and character flaws. I found it to be an excellent introduction to this author and I now look forward to exploring more of her world.
Highly recommended.

Carolyn was exiled to the human realm to defend against the exposure of magic - and more especially to keep the hunting of humans within bounds - after something happened and she was blamed for an attack on her beloved, the Prince.
PS Carolyn is a high ranking Demon, and nonetheless, one of the good guys.
It turns our that Detective Mina might have a few surprises in her genealogy as well.
Can her efforts to protect the human realm be used against them all? quite possibly!
Only with the aid of many can the realm, or even the city, have a hope of defense against what might come.

The story follows Caroline, a Lady of the Demon Court who has been sent to Earth as punishment for a crime she doesn’t remember. Working adjacent to the police force, she meets detective, lesbian and single mother, Mina.
Caroline is enigmatic, due to the fact that she has to keep the existence of magic and the demon realm a secret, and Mina is like a dog with a bone - if there’s a mystery to be unravelled, she can’t leave it alone, even when asked to do so.
And so, blossoms a scratchy friendship that gently unfolds into love. I liked this book. I’m not usually much for urban fantasy but this was a good story, well told. I look forward to reading more from this author in future.
Demon Caroline meets Detective Mina, who has recently moved to the city, with her daughter. Since Mina does not simply want to give up the latest murder case, even if it looks like ritual murder, and no one can give her an explanation as to why Caroline takes over, she is given permission to accompany her at work and to ensure that the laws are followed.
The resulting romance is not in the foreground, but how the two deal with each other and what intentions are behind it.
I like such stories, so 3.5 stars for it. It is relatively short and therefore read quickly.
Target: A F/F Snowverse Novel by L.C. Mawson is a wonderful story to read. This is a brand new start to brand new series, I loved reading this so much it has strong characters and a wonderful story line that I fell in love with. I can not wait to read the next book in the series, I highly recommend this story to everyone who loves paranormal romance stories.

A female cop has been promoted and they want to prove themselves. The last they wanted was a new comer telling her what to do or not to do. What is she hiding? Will they find out? See if they do

What starts out as a short story to detail about Caroline a demon who tries to persuade a human detective Mina to not follow her when Caroline is trying to stop other demons who insist on taking parts of a body and doing bad things with the parts. But Mina has her own protection that she doesn't know about yet! Do they try to persuade each other to stop or don't they? Enjoy!
This novella is a great set up for a series. The writing is sharp, the characters are interesting, and the world building kept my interest.
The world is the usual "hidden magic" urban fantasy fare, with a fun twist. MC #1 is a magical being whose job is to keep magic hidden from humans. MC #2 is a police detective who doesn't want to let her cases go to some shady organization.
I'll definitely be reading further in this series to see how it develops.
This was okay, but I felt there was missing passion between the love interests. Saw a different review use the word bland, and that encapsulates my feelings about the romance of this. The worldbuilding was okay, but I wish we got more about the history as it was basically hinted at. There's a prequel, but I feel like a fantasy should have the history in story (especially when the prequel is one of the optional ones). But, this story had a cool premise, and it was an enjoyable read.
The book and story wasn't bad, but definitely not the steamy f/f romance I was hoping it would be. Not quite enough description of things or character development. Sometimes I like vague descriptions so you can imagine them in your own way. But you really didnt get much to go off of. I wont continue reading this series perhaps even the author.
A kickass urban fantasy story that you will enjoy reading & many authors could do with reading this work to see how to introduce diverse characters naturally.
Differences are mentioned but not made into a big deal & the characters move on just like in real life :) very impressed & will be reading more by this author
