Following the runaway bestsellers This is New York and This is Paris, Universe is pleased to reissue another title from M. Sasek's beloved and nostalgic children's travel series. Like the other Sasek classics, This is Edinburgh is a facsimile edition of the original book that is still timely and current in every way. The stylish, charming illustrations, coupled with Sasek's witty, playful narrative, make the book a perfect souvenir that will delight both children and their parents, many of whom will remember it from their childhood. The brilliant, vibrant illustrations have been meticulously preserved, remaining true to his vision more than forty years later and, where applicable, facts have been updated for the twenty-first century, appearing on a "This is ... Today" page at the back of the book. M. Sasek has captured the very spirit, pride, and grandeur of one of the noblest places on earth in This is Edinburgh, first published in 1961. Sasek is right at home in Scotland, with its famous sights, unique character, and iconic traditions of kilt and tartan, pipes and pipers, whisky and haggis.
Miroslav Sasek (born Miroslav Šašek) (1916-1980) was an author and illustrator from the Czech Republic. He is best known for a series of books for children titled This Is...
Travelling back in time with Miroslav Šašek and counting down at the same time, only one week to go and I'll be travelling with my youngest to Edinburgh. We read the book together and enjoyed it immensely, we both like the illustrations and subtle humour by Šašek and had a laugh realising that in Scotland things really never do seem to change, the book is originally from 1961 and still is an up to date tourist guide.
My dad was born and raised on the Royal mile in Edinburgh. I found this book in a museum gift shop in Edinburgh. I was thrilled to bring it home for my son. Fun illustrations really sum up all the highlights of the beautiful city of Edinburgh. It's a coffee table book or bookshelf keeper for sure!
Been to Edinburgh twice. Been to Edinburgh Castle twice...most things in the book I have see! I recognize a lot of it! I could live in Edinburgh!! I love this series!
What a treat to discover this book! It's a classic! The first edition was published in l961, and then it was republished in 2006. Two changes were made in the book when it was re-published, and they are noted at the back of the book. If you love Scotland as I do, you will love this book: castles, the landscapes with its' beautiful mountains, clans, bagpipes...it's full of things you be prepared for if you wanted to be prepared to visit Edinburgh, Scotland.
Nádherné ilustrace. Na konci knihy jsou poznámky k asi pěti bodům, které se od dob vydání knihy změnily. Krásně to ilustruje to, že ostatní věci zůstaly i po šedesáti letech od prvního vydání pořád stejné. :))
Wide graphic visit through all the most characteristic, historical and curious Edinburgh's features wrapped up in a very curated edition with reminiscents from the past.
I can say that it's another journey through a well-known city via Sasek's distinctive art style. The artwork holds up and the facts about the city are still interesting. Newer editions will include an afterword with a list of things that have changed between original and current publication runs.
Here is the Grassmarket with neither market not grass.
This book is amazing. I found it in Edinburgh and honestly it's one my most favorite "books I bought when traveling." It has all the places I visited while there and I can't wait to read it to my kids in the future while showing them the pictures I took. I know it's silly but one of my favorites sites was Greyfriars Churchyard and cemetery. The statue of Greyfriars Bobby is just a couple of steps from the Elephant House, a small cafe where author JK Rowling wrote most of Harry Potter. Just looking through this book make me nostalgic. I had a great time in Edinburgh and I'm going to treasure this book for all my years.
Greyfriars Bobby sits on this monument as he he sat for six years, until he died, on the grave of his master.
Don't let this children's book fool you. It is part guide, part history book. It has all the famous landmarks such as: Princes Street, St. Giles' Cathedral, the Forth Bridge, the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and so many more. It's a very good book, no matter the age.
