---. You can’t hide the cracks under the spotlight .---

Dusk. Leader of The Underdogs. Destined for greatness. Lives in the now.
Abe. AKA Lolly. Iridescent. Unicorn.

All Dusk wants out of life is for his band to become world famous. He also wants to have a lot of fun along the way. And to get his rocks off. When he wants something, he goes for it, consequences be damned.

So when he sees a gorgeous pink-haired guy who is the human equivalent of tattooed cotton candy, he can’t help but have a taste. But it’s when Lolly ends up on their tour bus that Dusk knows their meeting was destiny.

Abe is the kind of guy who goes with the flow. He was hitchhiking anyway, so why not spend the week with a hot piece of rocker beefcake, getting smothered by his sexy long hair? And why not play the part of the supportive cutie while he’s at it? It’s not like he’d be sticking around for long anyway.

All plans hit a wall when photos of Abe and Dusk emerge online, suddenly pushing the band into the spotlight. To take advantage of the sudden popularity, the band offers Abe money for staying.

Which means money for being in a fake relationship with Dusk.

Which isn’t even fake.

Or is it?

Well,this was just delightful.

-cute,

-sexy,

- a bit of angst,

-great characters,I think I fell a little bit in love with all of them.

These Authors are the best at creating completely different characters and making them fit.

Dusk is the lead singer of The Underdogs,a band used to doing low key gigs but hoping for more recognition. Not one for relationships, his world is about to be rocked by a pink haired tornado.

Dusk stopped breathing and just watched the dreamy, pink-haired creature move along the aisle, headbanging gently to music he was listening to through his mint-colored headphones . There was a lightness to his step , and Dusk followed the guy as if he were a rabbit leading Dusk to Wonderland. (...)

Abe aka Lolly is most definitely a free spirit. He's sassy, strong willed and is used to only looking out for himself. All that's about to change when he catches the attention of Dusk.

Everything about Dusk seemed to extend its tentacles to Abe’s skin and grab on tight.(...)

These two go at it pretty much as soon as they meet and the sex scenes are smoking hot!
With the band heading for California and Abe to L.A,he can't resist the offer of tagging along with them and Dusk doesn't want him out of his sight for a minute.

When a picture of them surfaces online the band are suddenly thrust into the limelight so why not create a fake relationship and get more publicity?

But lines get blurred and Dusk's impulsive nature certainly doesn't help.

I adored Dusk and Lolly together and my penchant for sassy femme men was truly satisfied here with Lolly,I loved him as soon as he was introduced.

This looks set to be another fantastic series by these Authors and I'm hugely excited for more from The Underdogs.....especially Dawn,I already adore him...

Highly Recommended...

This is the first book in the Underdog Series and what a great start to a new series it was. I really adored this story and its characters.

Dusk is the lead singer of the band, The Underdogs and looks like your typical bad boy with his long hair and tattoos. But as we get to know him he turns out to be quite the softy and has a tender side that will have you swooning.

Abe is hitchhiking his way to California. He's a colorful character from the studs in his ears, to his pink hair, and his colorful tattoos that cover most of his upper body. He's Dusk's real life unicorn who colors his world and brings him all the cotton candy sweetness he can handle. I absolutely adored him.

Dusk first see's Lolly/Abe when they stop at a gas station for some peanut butter that Dusk needed to have. At first sight Dusk describes Abe as being someone who had stepped out of a fairytale with his pink hair and colorful tattooed skin. Dusk new instantly that he had to have him. On their first encounter Dusk tells Lolly, "You give me something sweet, I give you something salty." And were off, and so were they to get off. ;)
Their first time was hot and the ending was epic. That's all I am saying about that. Don't wanna give that goodness away.

That epic ending throw these men together when it was only supposed to be a quick hookup. But it also started one of the sweetest relationships I have read in a long time. I LOVED them together. Chemistry coming off the pages with these two. But these ladies are spot on every time with their characters and really know how to balance them out making them fit perfectly together.

Soon lines get blurry when Abe and Dusk are pictured together and are outed. Abe has been out since a young age but doesn't exactly enjoy being plastered online. Dusk isn't out. He's Bi and wanted to keep it private because he didn't want it to effect his rise to fame. But when they realize that people are being positive about it and is gaining them more fans and followers they offer Abe money to stick around to be Dusks fake boyfriend. Except things don't feel fake and that line of fake and real is blurry leaving Abe in the end frustrated and confused. Dusk tries to fix things only to royally mess them up more. Feelings get hurt and hearts get broken, but it's not long before they are healed in the most sweetest ways.

As always it was a complete delight reading these authors work. I can't wait for the next book. I want Dawn's book SO bad. LOL

This was one of the author's more tamer books that shows their more softer sweeter side. I like all their sides and enjoy their stories especially when they are funny, sweet, sexy, and have a touch of angst like this one did.

Pick this one up dolls!

Happy reading! xx

The first time Dusk sees Abe, Abe has his pink hair in braids and is sucking a lollipop. Dusk thinks he's gone to heaven and seen a gay unicorn. Abe is delicious, and Dusk has to have him. And have him he does.

Forget the slow burn. The attraction between the MCs is immediate; by page 3, they are screwing in a gas station bathroom. They go at it so hard, they break the sink and the pipe connected to the sink, which is how Abe (Lolly to Dusk) ends up on Dusk's band tour bus well & truly fucked and soaked to the bone.

The MCs are in their 20s, but they act younger. They are both spontaneous and don't talk much about the future. They don't talk much, period. Dusk adores Lolly, but he sometimes pushes ahead without thinking and hurts Lolly in the process.

Despite the dual third-person POV, Lolly remained an enigma. He's not all cotton candy and Disney charm bracelets. He has an edge and seems to give up on the relationship before it even begins. I really hated how Lolly treated Dusk at the end.

I needed a stronger resolution, an actual conversation, before the HEA. As such, the ending fell flat; I wasn't nearly as happy about these two staying together as I should have been.

However, I really liked the other Underdogs, especially Dawn, Dusk's younger brother who's the songwriter and behind-the-scenes producer; he's much too shy to be on stage performing. I would read his story yesterday.

I love K.A. Merikan's fluffy books, and Manic Pixie Dream Boy is low on the angst, high on the sex.

I should have gone gaga over this story, but I ... well, I didn't dislike it, but there was something missing. The MCs lacked depth, and the chemistry was all on the surface. I just wasn't feeling that OOMPH.

I loved it. Loved, loved, LOVED it! Manic Pixie Dream Boy is the first installment of the Underdogs series. It's light on the angst but has an edge too. It's sweet, funny, sexy and it reads easily, but the ending packed a punch and made me tear up. It also includes Abe, who turned out to be one of my favorite book characters ever!

Dusk is the lead singer of The Underdogs, a rock band on their first real tour. He's your standard long-haired, tattooed badass. The band doesn't have a big following yet, but all they need is an opportunity for breakthrough. But first, Dusk needs to...find some peanut butter. Which is how he meets Lolly.

Abe, aka Lolly is all pastel colours, cotton candy hair, and stardust. He's a rainbow pixie with boxer braids, denim shorts, and a septum piercing. He's a real unicorn who set Dusk's world on fire.
“You give me something sweet, I give you something salty.”

It was meant to be just a hook up, but Abe will be stuck with the band for a while. Fate is weird like that. So Dusk will learn that under all the glitter, Abe's really talented and smart, and Abe will see that under Dusk's gruff exterior, there's a big heart.

Their connection and chemistry is off the charts! The sex scenes are scorching. There is also the hottest bunk bed sex scene EVER!

But Dusk was brought up by hippy parents and has never been in a real relationship before. He doesn't know how to handle a real relationship, and how to put the other person first. He's impulsive and screws things up, even though he means well and his heart is in the right place.

Abe, on the other hand, has always been on his own. And letting other people control things for him, just won't end up well.

I absolutely adored The Underdogs, which is actually a bunch of misfits; sensitive Dawn, reasonable and organised Mage, Sid who always carries a chip on his shoulder, and of course, Dusk. I loved the dynamics among the band members, and I can't wait for everyone's story. I have my theories about potential couples, but we shall see...

The only reason I'm rounding down , is the somewhat abrupt ending. It's still a swoon-worthy HFN, but I wanted something more solid. Or maybe I'm just greedy like that. There's no doubt in my mind, though, that we 'll be seeing Dusk and Abe again in the future.

Highly recommended for everyone, especially for those who like the sweet side of K.A.Merikan.

All the stars!

Every time I read the blurb of a KA Merikan's book it talks to me. I feel attracted to their synopsis like a moth to the light, so I keep adding them to my shelves. But until now, until Manic Pixie Dream Boy I'd never tried this duo before. This time I've gone beyond the interesting blurb and to the whole experience and, let me tell you, what an incredible experience this one has been!
My first book by this authors and, for sure, no my last. I'm kinda obsess now and I guess this is the beginning of a huge fangirling thing so, helloooo Merikans! You have a new fan in me. Not a creepy one, promise, just a fan with a healthy obsession... or not...

So now, about the book:

This is the story of Dusk and Abe. Two guys who met in a stop in their way to LA. They crossed paths (swords too, figuratively speaking) and start a new journey together. This is the story of The Underdogs, a rock band that makes my heart sing, and my panties melt. This is the story of the their guitar and lead singer-Dusk- who wants to shine in a competitive and difficult world and a shinny man-Abe aka Lolly- who doesn't belong anywhere and who is always waiting for an upcoming storm.

Manic Pixie Dream Boy starts directly into action and with action I mean taking care of the business, doing the dirty, a filthy encounter in a gas station restroom. That action.

Narrated in dual POV, in a simple and absorbing way, this book caught me since the first page. It starts hot and steamy, it's true, and also funny and fast paced which is always a plus, but the real hook for me, came from the characters themselves and the depth it started to show in them over time and pages. The sweetness and insecurities behind all the layers.

One of them is openly gay, the other bisexual and not out.
One all pink (literally) and the other all dark in the outside (long hair, rock star looks and owning a name like Dusk) but so sweet and lovely in the the inside.
Both so scorching hot together and so gorgeous I couldn't find any visuals to give them the justice they deserve. My mind has a perfect picture of these two though, and that's enough.

I really loved all the Underdogs members. Dawn's shyness and sensibility, Mage's kindness and conscience, and Sid's blatant and grumpy ways. They are a bunch of misfits trying to success and, at the same time, trying to hide who they are, knowing the spotlight is a tricky place.

The style is fresh and light. The characters are young (all of them in their twenties) and the plot and interactions according to their age and personalities.
The book is extremely easy to read, super entertaining and very, very sexy. I couldn't put it down. And I have to confess I cried a couple of times from 68% till the end. Not ugly crying, just my hormones talking. And I loved it. I love to feel this kind of emotions.

It is true that I have a soft spot for rock stars so, to me, the  setting was a winner itself, even if music is not the main theme. There's no talking about idols or influences. There's no detailed gigs, songs or music talk among the band members. Non of this. But it worked for me as it was and the characters are very well sketched and very likable. Lovable. All of them.

I want book 2 right now. Sid? Give me. Dawn and... omg Mage? In the same book, maybe? Could they be an item, please? Give them to me. I can't wait!
I've been happy clapping since the beginning like the not-creepy-at-all fan I am. So, thank you KA Merikan, it has been a hell of a ride. Sweet and hot.

Highly recommend! I loved it!

My initial reaction when this book was first listed:

THAT COVER!

THE BLURB!

Dude!

And did it live up to my expectations?

Anyhoo, I have to write a super quickie because there's a hurricane heading this way, and I don't have time to make any images. Once things calm down, I will. I need to tidy up the last few ends, but I wanted to post a little something because I loved it.

This book had two things that generally irritate me:

1. Insta-love
2. Lack of communication

Did they bother me here:

In fact, the insta-love was one of my favorite things! Dusk & Abe (aka Lolly) are explosive together, and there's something about a possessive rock star that just turns my crank. Mixed in with a kickass supporting cast, a teeny sprinkle of angst, some vulnerability, a sweet (strong) HFN, and I was golden.

Great start to a new series, and I cannot wait for the other books to come!!

P.S. Again, I'll make a pretty pic when I can and cross post when I have the chance. Sorry!

*4.5* This story doesn’t delve deep into emotions, or take itself too seriously. Light, fun, low drama entertainment!

“You’re not just a hot body to me. When we fuck, it’s like I fall into you.”

Starts with a bang & a broken gas station bathroom sink.
Musician and artist
Adorable characters, lots of personality
Funny & sweet
Super hot, sexual chemistry
Not the brightest bulbs in the box

I wished for a little more actual musicianship/band performance, but overall I enjoyed this sweet love story.

Thanks so much for the excellent recommendation Dan!!

I grinned like crazy reading this one. I also cried, and swooned. I was also heartbroken. They had the best chemistry for an insta lust. Their journey from meeting to sharing intimate moments was seamlessly adorable. I adore their unwavering desire for each other from the start, that there were no doubts, or questions that they enjoy each other’s company. They made me feel so lonely, yet I can’t resist the constant swooning, giggling and snorting at 3am. AAAAACCCKKKK

“You’re evil.”
Dusk put his hand behind his head and made horns out of his fingers with a manic smile.

AAAAAAAAHHHH SO GOOOFY SO CUTE!

Both Lolly and Dusk are very mature characters. They are the couple that effortlessly draws readers into their world, making you feel at ease reading their story. Their dynamic was full of comfort and understanding. While the angst happen out of something silly, they both decide to beautifully stand by each other, and protect each other’s feelings. The angst left me so heartbroken for them, but the way they handled it makes it perfect.

”Boyfriends?”, “Boyfriends.”

I have to note some parts of the writing were repetitive especially on describing their physique, but it didn’t ruin my reading experience at all. It was merely noticeable.

I am contemplating to put this book on my top tier….Yeah, I’m just gonna do it. I’m not gonna be picky anymore:)

my favourite details:

🎸Touchy!! ☹️💜
🍭Making babies
🎸Hot tub scene
🍭The bracelet 😭😭😭😭
🎸The scene on the stage 🥹☹️😭❤️
🍭The epilogue.

Eh, this one was just okay for me. There was just something about it I didn't connect with. I'll admit I've not read a lot by these authors. I've tried maybe one other book and it didn't really wow me either.

It was a pretty easy read. Not a lot of angst. But it almost felt, I don't know, superficial? I just didn't feel the love, the chemistry, the connection, between Dusk and Abe. There was plenty of sex but, again, it didn't pack the emotional punch I was looking for.

I liked all of the Underdogs and would consider reading some of their stories, especially Dawn. But I don't know, maybe this author duo just isn't for me?

My color is black and I'm more into black currants, but all of a sudden I want pink things and strawberry flavored sweets.

Either he was high and didn’t realize it, or he’d just met a guy whose pheromones went with his like strawberries did with cream. 🤡

This book was quite entertaining. The focus is on the relationship between Dusk and Lolly, the rock band/rock music is just the setting, so don't expect a big music related plot.
The relationship between the two is unique. It is an exceptional way how they get to know each other and how they spend their time.

“You give me something sweet, I give you something salty.” 😂

It starts with quite a bit of sex and you think it's "just" one of those smutt-heavy stories. And even though K.A. Merikan can do that very well, I'm glad about the depth the book developed.
Admittedly not philosophical, it stays on the flippant side in the sense of the characters, but so also very authentic.

If he claimed the photos were of someone else, made up some stupid excuse or whatever, would he inadvertently communicate to his little brother that being gay was something to hide? 💗

Manic Pixie Dream Boy is pure sugar. Strawberry bubblegum, cotton candy, and lollipop sweet. Not my normal fare from this very talented duo. And, sadly, not my favorite, either.

The cast of characters is an unknown band, by the name of The Underdogs, whose members are two brothers -- Dusk and Dawn -- and their two friends, Mage and Sid, along with a spontaneous hitchhiker, named Abe, who is all cotton candy --- pink hair, strawberry lollipop, Disney tattoo, sweet -- or is he? Abe has actually been around the block a time or two and is definitely no innocent lamb of a unicorn.

It was supposed to be a quick hookup in a gas station restroom between Dusk and Abe, whom Dusk has dubbed "Lolly", but circumstances required they make a quick getaway and so Abe hightails it out with the band. And then stays.

Dusk and Lolly had an instant connection and that kept up through the story. The sex was super hot and served up extra dirty. And the characters were likable, though I don't feel like I really got to know any of them as well as I would have liked.

Manic Pixie Dream Boy is an entertaining read, for sure, but I admit I've come to expect more from these authors, and so was somewhat disappointed. There wasn't enough depth to the characters or the feels and the conflict and relationship development came too late to catch my interest. I was dying to feel something real, but Dusk and Lolly don't have a conversation with any substance or any real conflict until around 70% and there was too much miscommunication, or non-communication, really.

I do seem to be in the minority, here, though, so if you're a fan of these authors sweeter books, please do give Manic Pixie Dream Boy a shot. Hopefully, book 2 will be more my speed.

There is just something about this author duo and their edgy and compelling stories which continually serve to entertain the hell out of me. This first story in their new rock band series is fun and sexy, featuring some enjoyably quirky storytelling and a cast of colourful characters that I found unique and memorable.

Manic Pixie Dream Boy follows The Underdogs, an up and coming band made up of four distinct male members, including lead singer Dusk, his best buddy Mage, the drummer Sid, and Dusk’s younger, extremely shy, song-writing brother, Dawn.

This first installment focuses on the bands initial rise to (moderate) success, and is told through the POV's of Dusk and his love interest, Lolly/Abe.

Lolly and Dusk are both fun-seeking, live-in-the-moment, characters. Their initial gas station meeting is explosive and hot, resulting in Dusk’s impulsive decision to have Lolly join him and the boys as they travel across country on their bus tour. What starts out as some fun, no-strings, casual sex, quickly morphs into something more when tabloids out Dusk as bisexual and label Lolly his boyfriend. The positive attention this (otherwise inconvenient outing) brings the band is too good to pass up, so Dusk and Lolly throw themselves into a fake relationship for the public eye. But like all good fake relationship stories, what starts off as pretend quickly develops into much more complicated fare for young Dusk and Lolly.

I had a lot of fun reading this story. Dusk and Lolly were amusing characters that shared a lot of heat, but both acted so brash at times – especially Dusk – that I had some concerns about the possible longevity of their relationship, particularly considering the impetuous nature of their personalities.

Regardless of my apprehensions, I still very much enjoyed this story. Dawn was such a sweetheart of a secondary character that I’m positively giddy with anticipation for his book with Mage. It will be a one-click download for me, instantly upon release.

A special thanks to Kat and Agnes for gifting me a copy of this book.

This is a tough one.

I really really liked the relationship, how intense these guys were with each other. I loved how they got to know each other, I loved the sweet times, I loved the sex, I just loved them.

What I didn’t like was

But I did like the first 60%, so 3.5 stars is fair I think. And I will read the others in the series, because I loved the other guys! Especially Dawn. He is adorable.

I don't liked the scene where Abe flirted with gus, they should've talked first it felt like a gut punch.
This is one of those books where I see myself as the reader rather than one of the characters, it's hard to connect with them and relate and that's fine. I just wished we get to see more of the mcs struggle before they have sex.
Did dusk ever asked Abe real name??
Highkey i would read the Hella out of an mpreg version of this story lol.
I liked their little prank in the pool, I don't their interview it felt disingenuous and unrealistic, especially the fans and their reactions kinda cartoonish.
They need to communicate ugh I just hate when mcs doesn't know how to communicate with each other, it always results in an ugly fight.
The fight was typical and dumb also predictable, that's what you would see from a cheap tv drama. There's no built up they just lash out in that one chapter.
It's fucking messy.
I get manic pixie dream aspect of it
Like dusk sees Abe as someone he admire in his head not what he truly is, it's easier for him but I feel like it could've executed way better and have more build up before the fight.
I lost interest after the third act it dragged on for too long

Wait I laughed at this

"Like pink lightning You struck my heart Like pink lightning In a cotton candy storm I fell apart"

I feel like could've written a better lyrics than that 😭😭😭

Cotton candy & unicorns...

Fluffy and cute, I enjoyed this flavorful tray of sweets delivered by KA Merikan. I’m more in synch with their darker stories, so this one threw me for a loop at first.

Insta-love on one side, insta-guard on the other, Dusk and Lolly were hot together. Low angst, low depth, but a fun, lickable treat! Enjoy!

4.5 to 5 stars.

Dusk: is the leader of the Underdogs, they are a band trying to make it big in the music scene.
During their tour they make a stop at a gas station and that's when Dusk's life becomes more brighter and colorful.

Abe: is Dusk's lolly, he is a boy that grew in the system and it's finally tasting freedom, he wants to experience everything he can and have adventures. He loves to draw and it's just a magical unicorn.

Dusk and Lolly start an affair while the The Underdogs are playing gigs in different states, Lolly know is nothing permanent and doesn't really know what he is going to do next but he's trying to make the best of it.
For Dusk, he is overwhelmed by his attraction to Lolly, he gets carried away by his iridescent beauty and even if he doesn't mean to, he makes some mistakes.

This is Kat and Agnes's cutest story so far, if you are expecting darkness then look elsewhere because Abe's rainbow aura leaves no space for that.
It still has the K.A mark, their quirky characters with different personalities and interest.

The story is short and very enjoyable, the characters start a relationship pretty fast but the way their individual stories, specially Abe's, are handled does show a growth.
In the end I wanted so much more because I was just enchanted by Lolly, I swear I had a big ass smile the whole time I was reading this book.

I can't wait to read more about the other characters and their stories and hopefully see more of this couple in future books.

Well that was cute and unexpected.... this felt very contemporary for the KA ladies in a sweet way. Lolly / Abe was adorable and I can see why Dusk became mesmerized. It wasn't only about looks, it was the whole charisma & vibe of Lolly's personality - which at time screamed " be careful I'm vulnerable " Dusk was awesome once he realized more about what was actually required when loving another person, the bulldozer that Dusk was really needed to ease up ! His band made for interesting dynamics and I hope they all get their own books so that we can continue unpacking personalities. I wished for more Lolly & Dusk at the end so I'm hoping their connection grows in later books ? As always, these ladies are an insta buy for me so it looks like I'm on the Underdogs bandwagon!

It took me 2 weeks to finish this one and it's not even a long book. As much as I loved other books by these authors, this one felt different and well not really what I expected.

Dusk and Lolly were extremely hot together and there's insta-lust at its best, pretty early in the story.

It was a good one, just not angstier enough for me. I am curious about Sid's story so I will read the next book.

I'll start with the one and only thing I didn't like about this book: the title. Manic Pixie Dream Boy. I didn't like it even a little bit. Fortunately, I didn't let that stop me from reading the book. I have to say, though, that the amazing cover helped a lot.

So with the negative out of the way let's focus on the awesomeness that is this first book of KA Merikan's new series. We have a bad-boy rocker falling in love with a pink-haired drifter. Their romance moves along really quickly but with those two characters and in this setting it worked. They met while on the road and the whole story takes place while they are on the move. We have a rocker and a hitchhiker, they are both people living in the now, seeking adrenaline, not thinking of tomorrow. The only thing that matters is the now, or at the most the next week. So it seemed logical that they would fall so hard and so quickly for each other. They felt a connection and they went for it without thinking too far ahead. And at some point it just sucked them in without either of them realizing when it happened.

At first I didn't like the nickname that Dusk gave to Abe but as I kept reading it felt weird whenever he was refered to with his real name and not as Lolly. It was a cute name that Dusk gave him the moment he saw him and in the end it suited him better that his own name.

The other members of the band were interesting characters and as the series is called The Underdogs, which is the name of the band, I'm guessing that we're getting their stories in the future. It's not clear in the book but I hope the couples would be Dawn with Mage and Sid with Stan.

At the beginning of their relationship, or whatever it was then, Dusk was very self-centered, he didn't pay attention to details and he didn't seem to be interested in really getting to know Abe. I think though that he was just too excited to have Abe there and to be with someone he liked for so long for the first time in his life that he genuinely forgot to ask questions. I'm not excusing him, I'm just saying that there was an explanation for his bahaviour. He was a really nice person and he wasn't inconsiderate on purpose. Just too excited to think straight.

I liked all the tropes the authors used. Even the split near the end that is so common in romances, here it wasn't annoying. It was like something they needed to go through in order to grow stronger and have a future. They got something out of their time as just friends. It wasn't there just so there could be some drama in the story. It served a purpose.

I can't wait to see what comes next for this band and I'm very excited to see Dusk and Abe make appearances in the next books as an established couple.

5 shiny pink stars!

3.5*

So this had one of the most brilliantly mixed opening chapters of any book I've read as it throws the reader into the humorous and sexy initial meeting of the two MCs.

It also manages to bring the Merikans' own unique blend of crazy to the fake boyfriend and rock star romance tropes with a bit quite insta love connection between the somewhat over confident Dusk and the truly individual drifter he nicknames Lolly.

But, I don't know exactly what it was but I didn't fall totally in love with this couple or with this book like I usually do with this author duo. I think perhaps the angst was a bit 'teen' dramady and the characters all felt young - although I don't remember it ever been said how old either Dusk or Lolly were.

There was still a lot to like though, this is the first in a new series about the band members as I understand it and I looking forward to finding out more.

I did like the resolution of the conflict though, there was an understanding and an acceptance that mistakes had been made and more honest conversation was needed but I did believe both Dusk and Abe (Lolly's real name) did love each other completely.

And, as is always the case with books from these two, the cover is gorgeous and the sex is scorching.

3.5 ⭐️ The whole set up and vibe of this was truly weird but highly visual.
Cotton candy and lollipops and strawberries and unicorns and pink pink pink and tattoos.
I’m a sucker for insta-connection, rockstars and pink haired boys so this actually worked for me.
Pink haired boys *sigh*

Manic Pixie Dream Boy has to be one of K.A. Merikan’s softest, fluffiest novels ever – it’s cute, engaging, and with just the right amount of angst to keep things interesting. The book was just a delight start to finish, and I never wanted it to end.

K.A. Merikan, a team of writers, are fast becoming my favourite m/m authors. I devoured their Kings of Hell MC books – although, admittedly, there are only two so far – and have bought the first few books in their Sex & Mayhem series (which I will read the second uni is over!). From what I’ve gathered so far, these authors have a real talent for writing gritty, morally ambiguous characters, with dark and brutal storylines.

And then I read Manic Pixie Dream Boy.

To impersonate Chandler for a quick second … can this book BE any cuter?

I had a genuinely fun time reading this book, and I don’t think that’s something I can say with a lot of books. The characters and the storyline came together in the most perfect way to create a captivating novel that was impossible to put down.

As always, K.A. Merikan write spectacular characters. They have this incredible skill at taking two dissimilar characters – characters who have nothing in common – and making them fall in love naturally, organically – and making the reader ship them hard.

Dusk, the lead singer of The Underdogs, is caring, protective, a little inattentive, and impulsive. He is extremely passionate about music and is completely certain that his band will make it big time. When he meets “Lolly,” he immediately feels a connection with the pink-haired pixie. The only problem is Dusk has a tendency to act hastily, without considering his partner’s feelings … although his intentions were good. He does, however, have moments of sentiment, especially when he is forced out of the closet and understands that he could be a role model for young queer kids. That’s quite touching.

Abe, also known as Lolly, is an incredibly vibrant person. He’s effervescent – a unicorn with bright pink hair, and a lollypop. He lives in the ‘now’ and has been hitchhiking across the States, until he encounters Dusk. He’s brassy, headstrong, and knows how to stand up for himself. I just adored Abe: he frequently made me smile, but there were also many despondent moments from him that tore at my heart. He feels unable to “fit in” without acting like a completely different person in order to meet the expectations of others. Essentially, Abe is just a sweetheart. I especially loved the inclusion of his artistic talent and I thought it was so endearing that when he and Dusk become famous he draws fan art of the two of them!

What I love most about K.A. Merikan’s books is the fact that the reader not only falls for the MCs, but the secondary characters too. Like the MCs, the secondary characters are real, fully-fleshed out people, who you want to know more about. In this case, it’s the remaining members of The Underdogs.

Dawn, Dusk’s brother, is perhaps the sweetest character I’ve ever come across (and, yes, I’m including Laurent from Laurent and the Beast). He’s socially anxious, shy, sensitive, and needs to be protected, although Mage has taken over that role. I also can’t wait to read more about Sid, because he just seems like such a wild person. Can I also just take a moment to say how hilarious it is that Sid’s stalker is nicknamed Stan? These authors are so deeply entrenched in fandom culture, I love it. That’s also apparent from the inclusion of Tumblr, fan art and fiction, but the ‘Stan’ nickname was the icing on the cake! I do have my theories about who these characters will get with in the following novels, but won’t say who in case it’s considered a spoiler.

The dynamics between the band members was also very heartening to read. All of them, aside from Mage, are queer and even though they’re not real, I think it’s very inspiring to have a queer rock band. That’s not something you see at all, because rock seems to come across as very masculine, what with the stereotypes of Rock ‘n Roll bands and the female hanger-on’s, so I’m glad that K.A. Merikan are subverting these rock tropes. Another subverted trope: the Manic Pixie Dream Girl turned Manic Pixie Dream Boy (MPDB). Except while the MPDB does provide bubbly support to the brooding love interest (Dusk), in Manic Pixie Dream Boy, the MPDB (Abe) is not a hollow, two-dimensional character: he has dreams and ambitions, and they are just as important as his love interest’s.

Manic Pixie Dream Boy is one of the most adorable novels I’ve read in a long time. If you’re looking for a fun, flirty, fandom-filled novel, I highly suggest checking out this gem. K.A. Merikan are just the gifts that keep on giving and I cannot wait to read more about The Underdogs.

This may have gotten off to a bit of a shaky start but...

at the end of it all things worked out quite nicely.

When I first started reading this book I also started to worry...I like K. A. Merikan and am a total fan of their series 'Guns & Boys', I found 'Hipster Brothel' to be an adorable story and their 'Sex & Mayhem' series isn't on my TBR list it's on my 'why haven't I read this yet' list, so I admit when I first started this I also started to worry because a small voice in my brain quickly began to whisper..."Stop, right now...stop reading and step away from the e-reader...even you cannot handle this much fluff." but there was another voice whispering and it was saying "No, you need to keep reading...have faith, things aren't always as they seem." so after a bit of internal debate during which no other voices decided to take part...thankfully, because it definitely would have been therapy time at that point, I came to the conclusion that I needed to keep reading.

Sometimes it pays not to follow your first instinct because if I had I would have missed out on a story that it turns out I really, really enjoyed. The first part of this book on it's own just didn't work for me and had things continued in that vein I probably would have either done a dnf or this would be a '2 what the hell did I just read' stars review, but that's not what happened and things clicked and connections got made for me and at the end of it all it's 4 'WOW' I really liked that stars. I'm quite comfortable saying that if the first part of the book had worked for me as well as the last this would easily have been a 5 star review.

I'm not often a fan of rock star stories and this one started out as 'rock star meets boy, rock star screws boy' fluff, fluff, fluff...until somewhere along the way boy started to challenge rock star, display a bit of himself and rock star started to realize the world didn't revolve around him...that maybe he head to do more than just be, if he really wanted this person to stay a part of his life.

For me this wasn't a case of miscommunication it felt more like 'finally communicating' and when that happened I started to become invested and I became a fan. I absolutely loved the ending of this one it made me happy and was well done and I'm very much a fan of the fact that this is the first book in a series because there's more we need from this group...I want to know what's up with Mage and Dawn? Where will things end up with Sid and Stan? Also could we please see a bit more of the fanboy 'Baby Blue' I thought he was sweet and I'd love to see him get a story...see more! We definitely need more and I'm sure that I'm not the only one who wouldn't be opposed to more Dusk and Lolly/Abe.

As much as I love the darker side of the Merikans, it's awful nice when they're sweet.

Manic Pixie Dream Boy is a traditional boy meets boy, with some quintessential Merikan twists. I adore Lolly, who's spunky and punky and 100% his own person, and Dusk who's a bit of a horn dog. These two work their way through their first love affair, navigating the bumps along the way.

I read this one a few years ago, but I really enjoyed Tyler Kent's performance in Not Like Other Boys, so I couldn't resist the re-do in audio. This is a story which leaves a smile on your face, and Tyler Kent's performance just enhances it all.

The rockstar romance had been written to death and I've read too many to count, yet KA Merikan manage to bring something totally different with their own unique flavor to the story. I know The Underdogs are still pretty green in the indie scene and I don't really care whether are they gonna make it to the red carpet or not. With their dilapidated tour bus, the gigs, the groupies and don't forget the fanart and fanfiction, I felt they are pretty much the rockstars in their own way.

Dusk is the lead singer of the band and he had such a carefree and fun personality. Definitely not one of those drug snorting, binge drinking, groupie banging and moaning 'woe is me' kind of musician. Although I'm sure he might be a total slut, but is just never broadcast here.

Lolly, as I preferred to call him, is a wanderlust. A free spirited unicorn that manage to capture Dusk's affection. They met at a gas station and hook up in less than a minute, one might wonder how much romance can come out of such an unromantic beginning. A lot, apparently.

I won't refer to Dusk's feeling as insta-love or insta-lust, maybe insta-smitten was more adept. With his long mane and rocker exterior, I never peck him for such an endearing character. He was so smitten and sugary sweet towards Lolly. He seems to treat Lolly like a rare unicorn he managed to possess and will do anything to cherish and protect him from the world. I'm swoon over by his devotion, despite Dusk brushing it off as them having 'fun'. When they were outed in the media, they even played up the whole Dully ship to win some LGBTQ fans.

Lolly was hard to peck in the beginning. I didn't really get to know him beside that he had pink hair, loves lollipop and might be a talented artist. His relationship with Dusk seems superficial on all the fun and sex. I want to know where did he came from and where he is going. Is no wonder the whole Dully thing blew up on my face. I should have seen it coming, but I didn't because everything just seems nice and dandy.

I always love the dramatic plot by KA Merikan with some slight exaggeration. Despite this being a contemporary romance, with neither ghost nor murderous villains in sight, they still provide the shock factor and dramatic moments. In return my heart felt as if it went through the grinder. When Dusk and Lolly fight. I cried. When Dusk is hurt and sad. I cried. When they make up. I cried. When I read the sappy epilogue. I cried. There was an embarrassing amount of tears that wet my pillow and for the love of me, I can't explain why I'm crying over a book that make me laughed and smiled as much.

I love the idea of Lolly/Abe. I adore the happy themed tattoos et all. But the actual development of the character is uneven and too late in the book to work well.

Dusk's character has many of the same issues. They don't talk even after several moments of saying TALK.

Then, we get into a pretend relationship trope which is awkward and an even more awkward climax and break up.

Hmmmm. I will likely read Dawn's story because interested but I hope the emotionial depth of the writing gets better.

Tbh, I am a bit stuck for words here. *slightly bewildered*

If these characters came from a different planet, they couldn't be any more alien to me, I guess.

All I can say is that what these guys do really well is f***. And they do it a lot.
And okay, they are somewhat cute together. *see! lost for words*

So that's about it.
*This was somehow weird*
