I did it for a friend. But he was the reason I stayed.
Criminal defense lawyer, Kelly Black, came into my life as I was on my way out. He was infuriatingly handsome, except the Madam said I couldn’t have him. And no matter how many dates I had to keep my mind off of him, Mr. Black was the man who dominated my thoughts.
Then it happened. Ignoring the warnings that he was dangerous, I let him into my life not realizing that his touch would be the reason my broken past resurfaced. Determined not to lose the man who turned my life around, it was up to me to let him know who I truly was. But when he presented me with a demand of his own, I wasn’t sure I was ready to agree to his terms.
Submitting was never my strong suit.

This was a good read that I liked. Kelly Black is a force to be reckoned with. He is strong, seductive, sexy and enigmatic. He's mired in case that he has yet to get a handle on. Kendra is sassy and rebellious. She works for a Madam but doesnt always follow the rules. Madam is using Kendra to manipulate Kelly and she is getting caught up in Madam's plot to bring him down. This was a good read that I liked. I liked both of these characters their was a lot of twist and turns in this book. This was my first time reading this author this book had a lot of hot sex and I loved reading the bdsm. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.
Blurb: I did it for a friend. But he was the reason I stayed.

I'm really not sure if I like this book, I feel that it was all over the place, he is very alpha and when you think it's going to start getting good it goes to another scene and you feel like you've missed pages but ou haven't, I am going to read the next one I don't know if I will read it all I'm hoping it will be better than this first one.
This book had me so confused; I don’t know if it’s the way the author wrote it or it’s just the plot. Half the time I didn’t know whether I was reading the first or second book in the series. Don’t get me wrong it was good but it definitely could’ve been edited better, as to not confuse the reader. 3 stars.
Ouch... cliffhanger, I hate them. Kelly Black is dark, mysterious and wants Kendra as his exclusively to be his perfect submissive. Murder, secrets, lies, suspense. Kendra works for madam and she is manipulating both Kelly and Kendra. She has a hidden agenda will Kendra survive? Will Kelly survive? Will their relationship survive. Who's the murderer? In anticipation of the next book in the series, can't wait.
This is one fiery, steamy, erotic ride. I was on the edge of my seat and I didn't want to put the book down.
There are so many things that happened that you weren't sure if they had been orchestrated by Madam or were just coincidence. Kendra was newly hired by Madam to be an escort and she was on trial and baited by Madam throughout the book.
Enter Kelly Black, who had ties with Madam and who wanted Kendra, but he was off limits for Kendra. Madam had an agenda for both of them and you were never sure what was going to happen next. She toyed with them both constantly.
I liked the fact that Kelly was so persistent even though he had devious motives. He was shivery hot and I loved his strength. Kendra was a good for him but she was keeping secrets too. Together they burn up the sheets. I'm still panting!!!
There was so much else going on behind the scenes with legal cases Kelly was on, Kendra's friend Alex, and Madam's manipulations that made this a very exciting read.
Kendra is an escort who works for Madam. She is not a pushover and doesn't come across as a cheap date. Kelly is a lawyer who does un-lawyerly things. Both he and Kendra are pawns in a dance that the Madam has orchestrated. Madam has an agenda that Kelly doesn’t want to be part of and Madam needs him to participate. She tries to manipulate him by using Kendra, as in punishment or reward.
Kelly is an anti-hero and a sex God. But he can't figure out Kendra until he realizes that they are both in the game.
Both Bella and Madam are strong characters and play against each other well. I also liked the quiet power, (menacing vibe?) of the Madame and Jerome, her enforcer. I believe there’s another story brewing in CJ about the history between Madam and Kelly.
The book ends on a cliffhanger, and I'd like to read the next book as soon as yesterday.
Before I review the book, I must post a warning to anyone who is interested in reading this book/series.
This book is advertised as the first book in a new series (A Kelly Black Affair). It is the first book in the series, however, what is not included in the description (at least on Amazon) is the suggestion that you read the author's previous books Beyond Tonight and the On My Knees series. What happens if you don't read them? You will be totally lost and potentially ruin your reading experience. There are characters, events and even an unsolved murder case from the other books that would have made my reading more enjoyable if I had been familiar with the other books. Also, I am not familiar with the author and I did not read any reviews prior to reading Black Desire so I was really unaware that this was a spin-off series that contained characters/storylines from other books. I will mention that in the author's comments at the beginning of the book does suggest you read the other books for Kelly and Kendra's backstory but if you are like me and read on your Kindle or other device, you will have already purchased Black Desire before you realize you have absolutely no idea of what is going on with the characters. So my advice? Read the other books first!
With all of that being said …
Kendra is an escort that is not allowed to have sex with any of her dates. Kelly is a high profile defense attorney. Both work for a woman called Madame in different capacities of course. The plot centers around how the Madame may or may not be manipulating Kendra and Kelly. Actually so much of the storyline revolves around events that have taken place in other books that Black Desire feels like a continuation of those books instead of a new series that has it's own story to tell. At first I felt hindered by not reading the other books but maybe not knowing the backstories added to the mystery of the book and that's why I liked it as much as I did. But I like a good mystery and this book was full of them.
Kendra is a flirty, spunky, spit-fire with "Lioness" tattooed on her side. Kelly is anti-hero material who didn't care if he was the good guy or the bad guy and also had a Gideon Cross quality about him. Not insta-love but insta-chemistry that leans towards insta-love. Of course with the suggestion of BDSM there was a contract to be signed. I found if funny that Kelly was more interested in protecting his image and bedroom secrets than he was about protecting his pecker because no rubbers were worn. Kendra also spent a lot of time with her best friend Alex (character from a previous book). At one point, I thought Kendra and Alex would spend more time in bed than she and Kelly but they finally came together (pun intended). Although Kelly wanted Kendra as a potential submissive, there are no 'shades' scenes, eventually.
I did find the writing style of this book to be different (in a good way) from others that I've read. It was more like watching a tv drama in my head while a I read it. The story was told by both Kendra and Kelly in alternating scenes, similar to tv show. There is also a great deal of brow raising and arching throughout the story.
Did I like this book? Yes. Did I enjoy this book? Not sure. Would I recommend this book? Yes, but read the other series first. Will I continue the series? Maybe.
Although I figured out by chapter 3 that I was completely lost with the characters and realized that I must be missing a complete 'series', I powered on with it any way.
Kendra is a girl with a 'checkered' past that we only catch a glimpse of in this book. We learn that she was raped when she was younger, but not the entire story behind it. She finds herself working for the Madam (which must have been as some sort of a favor to her best friend Alex), escorting and dating gentleman. On her way out a meeting with the Madam she literally runs into Kelly Black, knocking his phone from his hand and throwing her classic attitude at him. That didn't sit well with Kelly, and him being the man that he is he demands that she pick his phone up (which Kendra did, talking smack the entire time in her head).
Kelly Black is a 'mysterious' criminal defense lawyer that has managed to find himself working for the Madam in a larger capacity than just a standard lawyer. Although were aren't given the entire backstory in this book, it's glaringly obvious that the Madam is a bigger player in many games that we aren't privy to. That means that Kelly obviously isn't quite on the up and up, but he also doesn't want to be in the position that he's in any more...even though he feels indebted to the Madam.
Kendra and Kelly have instant attraction, and both want the other. Kelly does whatever he can to get his chance at Kendra, which means that he has to go through the Madam and try to placate her and get what he ultimately wants...Kendra.
Clearly On My Knees needs to be read before this series, if you haven't read that one...start there. Even though a little lost, still a good book. I'll be reading On My Knees now, then go back to Black Demands.
PLEASE NOTE: This is a review on the entire series of 7 books. I had high expectations from reading the blurb on the first book, Black Desire. I expected dark romance, legal thrills and heartbreaking chills. I got the latter and not much of the other. This is an unnecassary lengthy series of a story of two very broken people, Kelly and Kendra and an exceptional villain, the very mean and manipulative Madame. Kelly and Kendra's journey to a HEA is riddled with so many different characters having an influence on their relationship that it took me awhile to really understand who's who and why they matter. The dom/sub relationship that was alluded to never really emerged. I read that this series was edited so I didn't expect typos and words like 'tailbone' to be overused. I completed the series because I was curious to read how it ended and how the characters all settled. I enjoyed it for the most part but some of the internal dialogues did tend to get on for a bit. This series was not a total waste of my reading time and has potential to be re-edited into a better version (as all stories do) and my favourite character is definitely the Madame. My descriptive words: Triggers, non-con, hopeful, twists and turns, interesting.
I have yet too read a C.J. Thomas series that was anything other than awesome, thus one so fair is no different. Kelly Black is a gorgeous criminal defense attorney, who feels a bit crooked by being the attorney for a local Madam. Kendra is a gorgeous escort, eye candy for high powered men. Alex is Kendra's best friend, she is in a relationship with millionaire film maker Nash Brooks. There has been a brutal of a woman; she has wounds around her wrist and ankles and other marks that point toward BDSM, which has gotten the attention of Kelly Black. The madam is starting to ask things of both Kelly and Kendra that neither of them feel comfortable with. Kelly and Kendra are now in a "committed relationship", after Kendra signed contract. A lot of people have warned Kendra away from Kelly... Why? Is it his taste for BDSM or something else? Kendra has followed her heart.... Will that get her hurt and make her a target? I don't know but, book two is out and I am starting it now. I highly recommend this series; I read several series/books a month, this will go down as one of my favs!
Firstly, this is the first in an six installment book series and therefore each book leaves the reader with an unresolved cliffhanger; but with that being said the main characters Kendra and Kelly Black ( referred to as the Kelly Black series) are both dark, brooding yet manage somehow to be enthralling.
The subject matter is definitely for Mature Audiences only as the author forewarns and hence I will concur with the author that if you have difficulty with bondage, prostitution, rape, etc perhaps this is not the book series for you.
This book is a real page turner! What you think you may know about a character may change on a dime.
I literally could not put the book down and sail through in order to resume to the second book installment Black Demands.
If you enjoy romance novels coupled with a little mystery and drama content then you will not be disappointed. However, remember again this book and the entire series contains very strong mature content and if that is not a deterrent to you you will be throughly engaged in this initial book series.
There are more twists and turns than a steep mountain road in this book. There is mystery, intrigue ans romantic suspense. Questions lead to answers that lead to more questions. Truths and past histories are revealed and not always happily or voluntarily. There is a dangerous game underfoot revolving around the death of a young woman.
Kelly Black is a force to be reckoned with. He is strong, seductive, sexy and enigmatic. He's mired in case that he has yet to get a handle on. Kendra is sassy, impudent and rebellious. She works for Madam but doesnt always follow the rules. Irresistibly drawn to Kelly after a chance meeting she has to decide to agree to what's he is offering or walk away. She has dark, hidden secrets she is afraid will be exposed and her vulnerability along with them. She is getting caught up in the intrigue of Madam's plotting, getting pulled deeper and deeper into what may be life endangering.
I’ve had a few books of this series already purchased and when I got about 27% in I realized there was a previous book that I also owned so I stopped this one and read On My Knees Before Black. To be honest I don’t like Alex or Kendra. Alex’s naïveté and, sorry to say, lack of intelligence, turned me off. There was a desperation about her that you could almost smell through the pages. In the prequel I detested Kendra and it didn’t get any better once I started Black Desire. She’s coarse, uncouth and, in the real world of high end escorts..no one would hire her. So I already own the first three books of this series and unless something really turns these books around..like lobotomy’s for Alex and Kendra I can easily drop this series like a hot stone. I believe the three books I currently own were freebies, not sure I would actually pay money for this series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I am waiting anxiously for the next one. I am somewhat wishing I had waited to read this one until the next one was available because I wanted to keep reading to find out where things go next. One of the pitfalls of series books I guess but I thought this was definitely worth the read. Not that it is required but I wish that I had read her books in order because there were references to relationships that I didn't understand but knew had to be in a different book. However, it did not make this book any less enjoyable. I say take a chance and read it.
I am a big fan of C.J Thomas; I have to say to say Black Desire has got me wrapped around its complex mystery, drama, steam filled pages.I am at the edge of my seat waiting for more! This is my favorite book yet! I have read this one twice so far!! It does end in a cliffy, but the book is so worth it as far as I am concerned If you like dark, drama filled reads with killer plot twists; then this is one I suggest picking up!
I'm sorry. I wanted to like this, but the story just keeps wondering like a hiker lost in the woods. I'm so tired of trying to figure out whats going on that I'm like, D@mn just get to the point already. Plus I don't really understand why everyone is so secretive over simple stuff that doesn't even matter. All the running around and away all the time just worked my nerves.
Loved this book! This is the first book I have read of C.J. Thomas, but I assure you it will not be the last. The momentum of the story will have you glued to the pages of this fascinating story. This book is a great start to the Kelly Black series. This was an enjoyable book with an interesting plot and dialogue—the scenes are well written, fast-paced, and flow smoothly from one scene to the next. I can’t wait to read book 2.
Dark, intense, twists and turns, romance. I love story. They were drawn to each other from the beginning. She was sad from past tramas and was looking for adventure and excitement--she got that in spades. He had his own tramas and lose and wanted someone to love and take into his life and heart. He found it in Kendra. They both found intrigue and more drama and adventure than they truly wanted. Great read!
Great book!! I love the way the same characters weave their way throughout your different books. I love this series, and I cannot wait to read more. There are great plot lines with a lot of twists and turns. Suspense weaves its way though the pages of this book from beginning to end. It is definitely a page turner, and I could not put it down. I love Kendras character. She is just the right amount of funny, sassy and sexy put together.
boring, boring, boring!! This book is S L O W. Characters flit in and out with no explanation, it promises action and mystery but none happen, it is dark and the "romantic" scenes are poorly written and lacking. Couldn't wait to finish this book to see the finish. However it was one of those books that just ends without being finished-- shouting buy my next book to see how things come out. No thank you I couldn't stand a repeat of this book.
This is not a standalone. There is a lot going on that presupposes knowledge from, i assume, an earlier book. Further, there's character development and then there's a lack of editing. This book could have been cut by half and been better for it.
My first read by C.J. Thomas and what a fantastic story! This hot, steamy, suspenseful, full of mystery romance grabbed me at page one and didn't let go. I loved Kelly and Kendra and their sizzling chemistry and cannot wait for the next book! Will definitely be checking out the other books by this author!
I am trying to find the book that was previous to this one. There are many references in the book to a story about Alex and Nash, who are secondary to this story. I enjoyed this book. Read it in 2 days. The characters are engaging. One wonders how Kendra got mixed up with the madam. I would have rated this book higher if it did not raise so many questions about a possible previous book.
Oh my.... The store continues from other books that C I Thomas has already written, smart it's a great idea. This book was awesome to read drama and sexual activity to hand and hand, and challenging the characters are important factors in this story, Can't wait to read more of this story in the next book! Enjoy
Thus book really had me thinking"this is supid" question that could have been answered was like what was the thought of their first time together? What did she think of the room.
Spoiler alert! If she has triggers of her rape why the the heck is she in the the sex business. Just craziness. Just really wasn't for me.
This is going to be a steamy series ! Kendra and Kelly's story is going to be an exciting journey!Lots of hot steamy sex scenes & lots of secrets! Love this story line and can't wait to read the next book in this series!!!! Thnak s again CJ for such a wonderful series!!!
Good book. I like the plot. However, some characters already know each other and have history so beware. If you haven’t read other books from this author, you might feel like you are lost at times like I was. I don’t think I’ll keep reading the rest of the series even if I won’t ever know how the story ends...
It’s a slow read. Kendra works for a devious Madame , who pulls all the strings behind the scene . Kelly Black is a high powered attorney who also works for the madame . Their paths cross and they are interested in each other . Kelly is a dominant . Maybe this books sets things up so the others that follow will be better but ....I’m not interesting in moving forward. 2 .5 stars
This was a good book with some steamy scenes in it. There is a story going on so it's not all about Kendra' s relationship. There is something that Kelly needs to get to the bottom of and I have no idea who is behind it. All I know is I don't trust the Madam. Going to read the next book to find out what happens and whodunit.
