This was the second of three anthologies showcasing and celebrating the Clarion science fiction writing workshops founded by Wilson, Damon Knight, and Kate Wilhelm that grew out of the famed Milford writing conferences. It's a nice mix of (mostly very) short stories by the students and essays by the instructors, who include Harlan Ellison, Frederik Pohl, Joanna Russ, and Ursula K. LeGuin, as well as the aforementioned Knight, Wilhelm, and Wilson. The young writers include Ed Bryant, Glen Cook, Robert Thurston, James Sutherland, Lisa Tuttle, and others, many of whom went on to have significant careers in the genre. My favorites were the stories by George Alec Effinger and Ed Bryant. The cover by Gene Szafran, which features a pair of psychedelic-looking unclad women, caused something of a stir, being celebrated by the New Wave fans and repudiated by staid conservatives.
Mindwebs audiobook ##10 Part 1 is “Winter Housekeeping” by Molly Daniel from this collection. A short story about an old man, whose wife is fighting against the ravages of time, whereas his attitude is fatalistic.
An Interesting premise but the macabre conclusion was a bit of an anticlimax for me.

This should at the moment be on my "read" and "currently reading" shelves. Lost this book years ago, fine science fiction anthology from the Clarion workshops, found it used yesterday, restarting in the middle with the Harlan Ellison essay but the stories, by folks including Robert Thurston, Ed Bryant, George Alec Effinger, Lisa Tuttle and others, are an exciting batch by writers first embarking into the bigtime. Whether they've gotten any farther than this or not, their inclusion in this collection means they made it to the bigtime. The other essayists, besides Ellison, include Ursula K. LeGuin, Damon Knight, Frederik Pohl, Joanna Russ, James Sallis, and Kate Wilhelm. If I was going to be judged by the company I kept, I'd try to get into that company.
