Hell's Gate #1

Straight to Hell

Rate this book
Everything you think you know is about to change.

My name is Lucifer. You can call me Lucy – I’m also known as the Devil and Satan, though why my idiot brothers came up with those nick names is beyond me. I’m a Guardian Angel and I run Hell. Yup, I’m the CEO.

Hell is easy. Hell runs like a well-oiled machine. Punishment befitting your sins is carried out and once your sentence is done, voilà, you get to go to Heaven. Simple. Easy.

Until suddenly there’s a blip on the radar. A breach. Some numb nuts on earth is trying to open a portal to another dimension. A very bad, very terrifying, very deadly dimension. So instead of my simple life in Hell, I end up earth side, where nothing is as it seems, looking for the soul stealing monster, avoiding the grumpy angel sent from Heaven and finding out my brothers Michael and Gabriel are twats. That last part’s not true – I’ve known they were twats all along.

With an unexpected fondness for my new human friends as a distraction, and my demonic presence stirring up a shit show of epic proportions, all I want to do is go back to my peaceful life in Hell. But someone has to save the world. It may as well be me.

What a fiery start to the series! Lucy is a hoot and Levi is hot as hell. I love the interesting take on hell and the descriptions on what it's like. Lucy is an Arch Angel, CEO of Hell, and her brothers Gabriel and Michael run Heaven. There has always been a bit of an issue with her brothers who aren't happy she got the Hell gig! Lucy comes to Earth to investigate a breech, where she falls head over heals for human, Levi. Lucy and Levi must investigate the breech and determine how to stop the soul stealer. This story is entertaining right from page 1. Lucy and Levi are joined by some other awesome characters. The book is full of action, magic, suspense with some hot romance thrown in for good measure.

The book ended on a cliff hanger, but we are given a teaser into the next book, Levi's POV. I can't wait. I am voluntarily reviewing a book gifted to me by the author with no obligation

A fiery five star introduction into the Hell's Gate Series
This has everything you could want - but then it is very rare that Hinchey does not deliver only the best in paranormal
Looking for suspense? Mystery? Serious back stabbing subterfuge?
How about Sexy male leads and strong snarky female ones?
How about a visit from Lucifer - or better yet Lucy?
So much going on it is easy to get lost in the story
Was an absolute blast to read
I read a complimentary copy of this book

Great start of the New series! I will wait on my tiptoes for book 2.
It was funny and really serious at the same time. The idea of the CEO was really nice and new. What will happen when she will come to Earth in order to deal with some creature. What will come from it?
I really enjoyed this story.

STRAIGHT TO HELL : (Hells Gate Series Book #1) : J.A. HINCHEY.

Read 15/11/2019 -17/11/19.

HANDS DOWN BEST RENDITION OF A HELL / LUCIFER STORY EVER TOLD!!!
FRIGGEN LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!

Lucifer/ Lucy Heaven, Hell, The Pit, Earth, Archanges, Gabriel, Dacian, Human's Levi, The Black Hat Detective Jared Morrison, Detective Nicole James. Teenager's EMILY, SARAH & BRIANNA Meddling With Ouija Boards & Séance In Shadows Falls Cemetery Accidentally Letting In a Soul Stealer Zuska From Another Realm, The Grim Reaper & Oh So Much More...

The chances of me going 'STRAIGHT TO HELL', I thought, were always pretty slim . . .Then Author Extraordinaire
Ms J.A. Hinchey aka 'THE DEVIL INSIDE' Comes along with This Series and I'm practically knock, knock, knocking on HELL'S GATES' to be let the damned Hell in. But boy oh boy, these scenes between Levi and Lucy are sure getting this chick 'HOTTER THAN HELL!!!

Wow, Wow, Wow, What More Can I Say
about this book? Its original, absorbing and a thoroughly entertaining read from beginning to its climatic non-conclusion of an ending. Leaves you hanging by one nail off the edge of the proverbial cliff... Cliff Hanging Ha ha!!

A brilliantly written unique, fast-paced storyline created by a talented author that just keeps those pages turning all by themselves. And just like Lucy, Jane's throwing out fire bolts & lighting strikes that'll knock you off your feet, leaving your socks sizzling while still standing upright in your shoes!

Usually if the protagonist is an Angel or Archangel, the antagonist is a Agent of Hell, a Fallen Angel, Demon or Hellion of some description or other, but not so here! And exactly who is the true Antagonist? Well you'll just have to buy it and read to find out. If you love this author's work, I promise you won't be disappointed and if you never read a single J.A Hinchey / Jane Hinchey book, Paranormal Fantasy, Sci-Fi or Cozy Mystery, well there's no better place to start and no time like the present, plus week of release books are cheaper to buy!

Jane is blessed with two creative muses that are by her side daily, one whom sits on a her left boosting her creativity and getting the good juices flowing, then there's her other Muse the naughty, cheeky one who adds all the mischief humor, snark wise-ass cracks, remarks & those HOTTER THAN HELL sex scenes that she oh so excels in.
These two creative cats help her to create credible characters. Some are honourable, some flawed & some who live & breath blue and do everything by the book, seeing no shades of grey, black or white). Some are loveable, some likeable and some characters you really don't care for at all, and there's a bit of a surprise package here too, there's one character who'll swing your emotions back & forth like a yoyo making you care for them one moment & cringe away the next. Plus then there's always that one, you know the one I mean, the antagonist, the bad dude / dudess. That one, you just can't wait to see them get theirs, even if it means you're dreaming up ways they'll die, screaming in agony, but can the author think up a more creative, gruelling & gruesome ending than you?
And will the bad one, truly cop their fate?
And if so will it be in life or in the afterlife? And who'll be the judge, jury and executioner? God, Lucy or someone else entirely? But all Jane's characters make you feel something... It's up to you to decide, will you be part of 'Team Evil' or 'The Force For Good?'

Well I guess you'll just have to keep reading the series to find out as book 1 leaves you on a bit of a hanger. (Damn these authors, they just love doing this to us, their sweet dedicated friends & fans!
We (meaning those of us) who help them out from the kindness of our hearts, with ARC & BETA Team readers, reading, editing & honestly & impartially reviewing their work, wanting nothing in return!
So Yes, Ms Jane J.A. Hinchey, I'm Naming and Shaming You, How can you do this too us)? But at least there's not much wait on book 2 & 3! Your lucky this time lady! Lol!
And while I'm speaking directly to you, "Gee I wonder why a hairless (creepy looking Mr Meow) suddenly grows the gorgeous coat of a ... Fluffy Tabby Cat?" Bias Much? Lol!

I believe Lucy & Levi are set to become my favourite J.A Hincey or Jane Hinchey couple and I've only read the first book!
They had an animal attraction & instant magnatisim that set sparks flying across the room like a fireworks display on Australia Day or New Years Eve, from first sight, their very first meeting!

Lucy was almost melting, her bones turning to mush, her brain and muscles becoming Jello and falling weak at the knees after receiving a simple vision of Levi, while psychically linking his power of foresight of Emily's brutal death to Lucy's psychic Inbox.

And I love the fact there is none of this 'Destined Mate' of Werewolves, 'Mine' of Vampires and other Supernatural Creatures here.
What We Human's can't find our true love, 'The One' and hold on to an everlasting love and relationship too?
And seriously how would a wolf or vampire know what our equivalent of their 'Mated' partner is considering their not human?

Then again this relationship is not exactly two humans, but one human, with physic abilities and an all powerful Archangel whom together can boost their powers, combining and amping it up through touch, thought and feelings.

Book 2 'THE DEVIL INSIDE' shouldn't be too far off it's new re-release, nor should book 3's 'HOTTER THAN HELL!'
I can not wait for this is an unread series to me. Woo Hoo! And I'm ecstatic to be finally reading it!

My only slighlty negative comment which I'm hoping Jane will take as constructive criticism (and why I think it), and not as out right criticism.
For I don't think it's right to criticise an author's humongous effort of months, sometimes even years of work in blood, sweat, tears, deadlines, tantrums, research, writing, edits, social media, promo's & commitments etc & just be out right mean & slam their work.

Anyway my concern is in regards to the re-release of all 3 books, but has nothing at all to do with storylines and story arc's, characters development, plots, world building or writing, nope it's nothing like that, its the changing of these book covers, that's it!

I know Jane's team her Little Devil's & readers totally fan-girled over these original release covers, even many of the guys did!
And knowing Ms Hinchey's reason for updating her Paranormal Fantasy Books & Cozy Mystery Books & creating them under 2 different names and separating her newsletters with the added confusion of having 2 Australian author's both releasing books under the name Jane Hinchey (there is of course the possibility that fans might accidentally buy books that don't belong to our J.A. Hinchey / Jane Hinchey as I almost did myself before asking about them.
But I have to say I'm a little broken hearted over the new release covers!

These were 3 of my All-Time Favourite Individual & Series Covers. I know author's constantly update covers & content to go with the times or how the public's reacting to certain aspects.
But these were and still are sublime!
I don't think they needed changing yet, their not that old yet, only a year!

I won book 2 in a competion from Jane and was so excited, I immediately bought book 3 in digital format, thinking I already owned Book 1 (on my old tablet) but I couldn't find it, therefore not being able to access and not able to begin the series. This is not the series to begin at book 2.

I don't think the new book jackets even come close to the brillantness of the original release covers.

They are not bad or horrible, in any way shape or form, their nice covers, but personally, they would have stopped me from reading the synopsis of the books. If I didn't already have them or know what they were about, I'd just scroll on by.
Sorry Jane, I know these are your babies, you love them dearly, but we your team do too. If a book's cover doesn't catch my eye, I won't even bother reading what the book is about, unless I know the author's work and am systematically working my way through their entire back catalogue of work!
That's just me, a cover must attract my attention, or it's all over for that book!
There just too much competition out there with magnificent covers that do catch my attention, so mediocre or nice just gets scrolled by. (So sorry Jane, I feel terrible writing this, but I need to be truthful as I think it helps an author).

The only positivity I see to this new cover, is the added lick of red flames (but as described in the book, not on the cover image) that tinges Lucy's long jet black locks, and eventually do her wings too, (I think, but am not sure on that).

I love this idea thinking it's a uniquely brilliant strategy that's never been used before (well not too my knowledge) but I did believe Lucifer's hair is more black than red (but you did tell me recently with the release of 'RETURNED', it's not always easy matching a characters traits to a cover model's stock photo, which must be almost impossible)!
The Font is similar, but doesn't quite stand out to the same degree and if I didn't know better, (as a new customer, seeing both designs) personally I'd think the new blue / purple covers (with the red & black hair, were the old original release designs & the new updated versions about to be released are the old book jackets with the gold / red / yellow designs.
I would never wish to hurt your feelings, but this is just my opinion.

With some of Ms Hinchey's earliest writing her world building was still developing as do all author's skill's in certain departments (in the beginning), but in saying that, those books are extremely well written, making Jane instantly a true favourite author of mine.

I was receiving 300+ author emails weekly when I met Jane, ARC + BETA Reading for them. Then I realised she was an 'Aussie author', then a 'South Aussie' Even Better! One who lives just down the road from me!
There was something about her that immediately appealed to me, no not her books, but her herself.
It was her genuine character, she's smart, extremely friendly and always replied quickly to any inquiry from frien ir fan.
Then I got to know her insanely hilarious humor with her sharp witty snarkey wise-ass remarks that cracked me & even though I hadn't read a single page of hers yet it made me want to see her succeed even more, and I jumped on her band wagon. I knew immediately I wanted to help her on this journey getting word out about her books to my friends and followers.
I'd even mention her books to other authors, writing similar themed books all over the world, who soon became fans themselves after picking up a single book!

But the moment I read my first Jane Hinchey Book 'FIRST WITCH' I was hooked!

Not only have I've read, loved and reviewed most of her earliest books on multiple sites / book stores, but highly recommend too! There are several more I own that I haven't gotten around to reading yet too, but I will!
Now with so many books & series under her belt, and someone I'd call a professional writer, Jane's world building & descriptive narrative has grown in leaps & bounds. It shows how she has truly grown & blossomed as a professional author with best seller titles to her name!
While reading this book, Lucy and Levi are blindly following the secret underground network of cement structured tunnels, caverns and dirt dug escape roots and not knowing exactly where they're going as the tunnels are from a by gone area (probably built in the days of smuggling either of slaves or during prohibition with the illegal bootlegging of alcohol hiding from the authorities).
The incredible descriptive narrative I read, made me feel as though I was not only seeing it all play out like a movie screen on the inside of my mind, but I actually felt as if I was right there along side this Dynamic Duo, ducking falling rocks, stone, boulders and debris,
choking on decades of dirt damp and dust, falling into then carefully dodging pools of quicksand and enemy combatants!

I RATE STRAIGHT TO HELL
5⭐ Out Of 5⭐!

And definitely recommend this read!
Actually Buy the Whole Damned Series, You won't regret it!!!

I recieved an ARC Copy of this book from the author and this is my fair, honest and impartial review as always.

I read this series out of order, and to be truthful, I hate reading books out of order. However, when I just read this one, it was like starting all over in a good way. I forgot how much I adore Lucy. She’s a tough but fair protagonist, and she portrays Lucifer in a way I would hope the “real” one would actually be. The book also has the great writing, fascinating characters, and interesting plot I’ve come to expect from this author. If you love urban fantasy with a little bit of romance and hotness, I definitely recommend this book! I received a complimentary copy, and I voluntarily reviewed it.

Just when you thought you knew Lucifer, it turns out you didn't. This Lucifer is a female, and a very stylish female. The whole story has a different take on what you have read before. For me I still picture Lucifer as a male character, but I did find the story interesting with a lot of action.
This promises to be a great series and I look forward to read the rest.
This is an author who is a must read.

Wonderful start to a brand new series. Different take on Hell being run by a woman CEO called Lucifer or Lucy. Entertaining descriptions of hell with buildings housing cells and the pit still being there for major punishments. Lucy is not a fallen angel she is just doing a different job and her two brothers Arch Angel Michael and Gabriel run heaven for The Father . There has been breach on Earth and someone has summoned a soul stealer from another realm and Lucy has been sent a message from a human Levi Forrester who has visions and is unaware of his true power. When Lucy arrives on earth she is promptly arrested for the murder of a young girl killed in the cemetery by the soul stealer. She is later released as the two other girls from that night verified she did not do it. Now Lucy and Levi must keep the two girls alive and try to figure out what else is happening on earth as well as in heaven cause things are definitely starting to go wrong up there. A big thank you to Jane Hinchey for the totally entertaining review book. Loved it.

This is a rather short book. It started out quite good, but after a while the speedyness of the story was a bit too much. I liked the idea of Lucy being the CEO of Hell and such.

Straight to Hell (ARC) by Jane Hinchey: ***** Really different and very good
This writer has an incredible imagination and her storyline around Lucifer and Hell is fantastic. One example: I loved the little warnings Lucy gave, guiding souls onto the right path. But ugh, it ends on a dilly of a cliffhanger - I can’t wait for the next book! Disclosure: I am voluntarily reviewing an ARC of this book.

I am loving this new series by Jane Hinchey. It all starts in Hell where Lucy is in charge. Yes, Lucy. Her brothers Gabriel and Michael, the banes of her childhood, were put in charge of the earth and Lucy was put in charge of Hell. She is proud of the job she has done, even if her brothers have given her a bad reputation. She is only there to see that those who deserve to suffer, suffer. If they fulfill their allotment of punishment they are allowed to move on, but for some that is not possible and that is how it should be. When she is suddenly thrust into a shared vision with a human psychic showing there has been some kind of breach between realms, she doesn't hesitate to show up to try to help.

A soul stealer has escaped whatever realm he is supposed to inhabit and is now on earth. He has already taken one soul and there are two more in imminent danger. These are high schools girls who did not understand what they unleashed. Lucy finds the psychic, Levi, who originally connected with her. Together they try to find out what is going on while keeping the other two girls safe, and themselves out of each other's arms.

Lucy and Levi are joined, however reluctantly, by two detectives who are not sure what to believe anymore. There is also an old childhood friend of Lucy's, Dacian, who is acting like he doesn't know her and is not all that friendly in the current time. Together they must try to solve the mystery of how the soul stealer got to this dimension, and what exactly his plans are. Something tells Lucy her brothers are involved, but why? The mysteries will not all be solved in this book, of course.

I was given an ARC of this book. My review is voluntary.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this book, but I’m very pleased with what I found. Meet Lucy, aka Lucifer, aka Satan, aka the Devil. She’s a beautiful woman and not at all what you might think she’d be. Oh, yes, she punishes sinners, but she does it with a conscience. So if you were wondering, there is a touch of religion in this book, but it is only on the surface. There is no preaching and no delving into anything overtly related to any one religion.

I certainly liked how this book developed. What I didn’t like is that it ended on a cliffhanger, but not one that’s a deal breaker for me. Good news is that the next book in the series is available very soon. Yay!

A human psychic, Levi, alerts Lucy to an anomaly on Earth, and she heads “upstairs” to check it out. What she finds is very disturbing; an innocent high-school-aged girl, Emily, has been killed by a being from a pocket realm that’s neither Heaven, Hell, nor Earth. Due to something Emily and some of her friends had undertaken on Halloween, Lucy worries that the girl’s two friends are also in danger. She works with Levi and others in an attempt to keep those girls safe and to send the intruder back to his home. Along the way, Lucy and Levi develop more than a working relationship.

Trigger Warning: Things do get hot and steamy in this book, and there’s some rough language, so beware if that’s a problem for you.

I loved the characters in this book. Lucy is so far from what I’d ever imagined Lucifer, and I fell in love with her. Levi’s great, too, as are several of the other characters, both human and angel. There are bad guys, of course, but they aren’t necessarily who you might think they are. Yes, there’s a surprise at the end of this book.

The writing is great, the characters are well-imagined, and the plot is one that will draw you into the story. Action moves the story along at a good pace. I didn’t want to put the book down once I’d started it, and I’m eager for the next book in the series to become available.

I received an ARC of this book for free from the author. I thank her for her generosity, but it had not effect on my review. All opinions in this review reflect my true and honest reactions to reading this book.

Before I was even finished reading this book, I knew I was hooked. Jane Hinchey did it once again with a new series. The book focuses on Lucifer, but "Lucy" takes a left turn from what you might imagine. I don't want to spoil anything about this story, but it opens up your perspective on the afterlife as you're reading. As with any book that has the leader of Hell as the main character, there's the misconceptions that are brought up, and it's always fun to find out how Lucy sets them straight. I had some suspicions about where the book was going, and when I reached that point I was not disappointed in the least! It answered my questions, but then it left me with even more questions. I was relieved to see a small snippet following the book, but I found myself still swiping at my Kindle screen, hoping there was just one more page! I was fortunate to receive an advanced copy, and I volunteered to leave a review. Can't wait to read the next one!

A HOT new series that you don’t want to miss!!

Straight to Hell is the first book in a HOT new series by Jane Hinchey. Jane’s writing has already proven to be spectacular, but this book take it to a whole new level! Lucy is nothing like the devil you’ve ever imagined.... for starters...Lucy is a chic. That’s right... a sexy, bad ass chic is responsible for running Hell. But when some strange things start to happen, Lucy heads up to the land of the living to try to fix things before they get out of hand. From there, you’ve got ghosts and angels, and crazy siblings... and not to mention, one super sexy living human. Tie that up with fast paced twists and turns and you’ve got yourself what promises to be one kick ass book series!! I couldn’t put this book down... literally. I read it cover to cover in one sitting! Book 2 will not be out fast enough for me!!

This is the first book in a new series by Jane Hinchey and once again she has branched out in a different direction. I love her fresh take on Hell and Archangels and the story is imaginative, descriptive and bowls along at a pace. No spoilers from me but the blurb gives a good indication of the storyline. Unusually for Jane, she does bring the story to an abrupt end on a big cliffhanger that I didn't see coming but the "Excerpt" (an unofficial epilogue in this case) following the last chapter mitigates that ending slightly and sets up the next book beautifully.
I was impressed with the writing and the characters, especially Lucy and Levi, and I am looking forward to the next book.
I received an ARC but have voluntarily decided to write a review and the opinions are my own.

Lucifer, Lucy for short, decided to bring forth her sleugh skills to solve the mystery behind a breach to Earth's dimension. But, in this story Lucifer was not the bad and merciless fallen angel, at all. An interesting, entertaining, amusing and suspenseful story with magic, mystery, paranormal characters, emotion, romance and heated passion. Enjoyed the plot development, the twist in the story, Levi's character and of course, his POV. Read the story some time ago and left me intrigued and eager for the next book.

Intriguing! This book leaves the reader perpetually wondering what's going to happen next. Because it's the first in the series all questions the reader is left with will hopefully be answered in the follow up books. I felt the lead character made entirely too many human mistakes for one that has never been human and even comments quite a bit about "humans". I could have tolerated them better had she not been constantly thinking with her lady parts instead of her common sense. But overall the story was very good and I can't wait to see what happens next in the series.

Oh my goodness. Loved this book. This is a fantastic urban fantasy that reimagines the whole Lucifer life! I love that she is a woman who completely cares about right and wrong, and doles out the punishments according to the crime. She is amazing, and the way this book ends leaves you dying for more! I can't wait to see what happens next. I highly recommend this book if you like snark, sass, and kick ass!!

Get ready to relearn everything you thought you knew about Hell when you meet Lucifer or Lucy as she prefers your going to be shocked into a whole new way of thinking. Forget about the devil trying to steal your soul, Lucy would rather save it if possible and she wasn't thrown from Heaven her father God rewarded her with the gift of running Hell. So hold on when Lucy visits Shadow Falls to solve the trouble of the soul searcher and meets Levi.

Lucy is not what you think. She is the CEO of Hell and when she gets a message from a clairvoyant on Earth she goes topside to find out what is going on.

A soul stealer from a pocket dimension has made it to Earth and Lucy tries to find out what is going on.

This is definitely a different kind of story than what you might think.

I love this series so far. It's an interesting take on Lucifer, with the character being a female and not a fallen angel, but the CEO (so to speak) of Hell. The characters are interesting and the pacing is good. I can't wait to see what happens next. I am voluntarily reviewing this book, gifted to me by the author with no obligation.

Great characters that suck you in, lots of humour, magic and mayhem, with abit of romance thrown in. Lucifer being a woman is brilliant. Read this in one sitting and cant wait for the next installment till i find out where the story goes next and we learn more about Lucy

This is such a fun and interesting book. Full of sibling rivalry. Look out Brothers Lucy's on the warpath.
