If you would live your whole life in agony, do you think it would affect you? When mental and psychological pain become physical, it's hard not to change, and Millicent Kale changes a lot. Grief, hurt and а constant headache follow Milly every day, but, when the closest person she has dies, Milly uncovers that she's not quite human. And she's not alone.
With a mountain of stress and loss on her shoulders, Millicent has a breakdown and finds, that her subconscious manifests a real physical body. Now that she has a duplicate, life seems to become easier, but that doesn't last long enough either.
Fate entangles her life with Dean Write, whom she would rather choose to avoid, though it's hard to ignore someone, when it's your own boss. Yet in the end her inner voice makes Milly listen to reason, of course, it's really hard not to listen to your inner self, when she can actually punch you. Getting involved with her superior should be complicated and weird, yet it doesn't really work like that, if destiny itself brings you together.
When everything seems to settle and happiness is all around Milly, it seems too good to be true. Good times don't last long - a rather nasty ex-coworker returns to take revenge, endangering Millicent's every step. Now struggling to survive, she gets entangled into a secret war without even knowing it. In the end Milly will find out that there's a lot more to the story, than just revenge and jealousy.
For the first time ever I want Likes because of reasons other than: *Get likes *Feel more popular than Justin Bieber This time I want more people to read this book. And of course, to feel more popular than Justin Bieber.
Ps: I know the author and I like her but this is my honest opinion.
I read this book with really low expectations because let's face it:
■ This is the author's first book. ■ Not popular on GR
But I was surprised when I started cheering for the characters and talking to them. Brain: Because talking to fictional characters is weird? Obviously not, it meant that I liked the book.
The Plot:
Millicent Kale is a 17-year-old girl who works as a PA for a big company. She doesn't have friends. Seeks control in every situation. Lives alone and wears heels every single day. She lives a normal life. Until it's not that normal anymore. With one event it changes forever.
Before 40% (2.75 stars)
At first I was like:Whaaaaat??! So you're telling me that this girl: lives alone, has a job, speaks 2 languages and intimidates older co-workers with a stare. And she is a 17-freacking-year-old.
Then I got used to it. I still think that the author should change her age to at least 20.
Also too much telling. And to be honest the writing isn't that good. I almost Dnfed it after 10 pages but I'm soo glad I didn't.
We meet Dean: Milly's new boss. I smell another Fictinal Boyfriend in the house. I liked him. A LOT. But Millicent didn't share my opinions. She hated Dean. She doesn't like people in general but with Dean it was even worse than usual.
Then the EVENT happens.
After 40% (4 stars)
Once I got used to Milly's personality and the writing. This book got soo much better.
First of all Milly became so funny:
"They hug and laugh and look so cute together. Ugh, disgusting."
"How can I be sure that she’s no cannibal?"
And DEAN. OMG he's soo BAE. I luuuuuved him.
but when he sees me his face lights up like a christmas tree.
“What. What do you want?” “You.”
He seems so positive and optimistic all the time.
Their Relationship
I laughed so many times reading the banter between Millicent and Dean. It was a hate to love relationship. As in HATE to love.
But when our ship sails. It SAILS. They were soo cute together. It was disgusting.
The ending: I want the second book. NOW.
I think people should give this book a chance. I really liked it espeacially toward the end. It had its problems but at the end of the day it was enjoyable. And it gets better with every page.
Hope you guys liked the review and I have BANGS now. Yaaaay.
What a fun book! I didn't know what to expect when I went into this because the synopsis is brief, but I found a true treasure. Millicent Kale leads a normal life, but ever since her mother died, she's been having a terrible headache. Not having enough money for college, she must work in a company. Sudden changes cause her to diverge from the path she thought she was leading her whole life. What is really going on behind the scenes?
Yes, yes this book does have its flaws, but it really doesn't take away from the story. Because of how fun and addictive this is, I recommend it to people that want to get out of a reading slump. In all, honesty, I think that most people will enjoy this book.
First of all, I must throw a little shade. Special Minds is Ally K.'s first novel, so don't expect the writing to be perfect. It was a little underdeveloped and may cause some characters to come across as unrealistic in the beginning. As the book progresses, though it gets better and better. This reminds me a little bit of Cassandra Clare, because her first novels weren't that great when it came to the actual writing, but now, in the time when Lord of Shadows is out, we can really see that she took the chance we gave her and her writing is so much better. I think that people should give this novel a chance.
Next, I want to talk about the romance, because this is very much a romance novel. I am a sucker for hate-turned-love relationships. Usually, in those novels, it is really easy to make the two characters hate each other for literally two pages and then they magically fall in love. This was not the case here. Milly stands by her hate for a long time, openly being frustrated by Dean. Something that took me by surprise is how well their relationship was developed. This is a very character-driven story, and for a first novel to be like this in only 194 pages is really impressive. I think that the next book could be easily longer. Back to Milly and Dean, though, I appreciated also the fact that Dean wasn't that overprotective, alpha male (a trope I'm tired of seeing). He respects Milly, and in return, she respects him too. I must say that this might even be, what some people might call, #relationshipgoals.
A big topic in this novel is your subconscious (I guess you can call it). That little voice in the back of our heads helping us make all those decisions in our lives, without us even knowing it. Now, what if that little voice... became human? This is a concept which is very original and thought-provoking. I never really thought about this before. Would I make different decisions if my subconscious would be a real human? How would that affect my daily interactions? This is also one of the reasons that I postponed writing this review for two days. I was still thinking about it. A reason that it is appealing to readers in reading slumps is that it is not only thought-provoking but easy to read, so you aren't burdened by it.
A problem: WHAT WAS THAT ENDING!? I NEED MORE! YOU CAN'T LEAVE ME HANGING! A problem 2: WHY ONLY 194 PAGES!? IT COULD'VE BEEN 294!
Wishes for book 2: 1. 2. Improved writing 3. More of and , because we never really get to know them well, especially . 4. More time at the company, because we don't see that much of it nearing the center of the novel.
All in all, Special Minds was a really fun read, which is bound to lighten up every day. And even if the first ten pages aren't satisfactory, it is worth it to read on, because what we find later is, like I said in the beginnig, a true treasure.
I was given this novel in ebook form by the author in exchange for an honest review. I do include some spoilers, but I did so beneath my general thoughts so as not to spoil it for anyone who would like to read it.
The plot itself is very interesting, and the book almost feels like a series of journal entries, which I liked. Not sure if this was intentional, but if it was, I thought it was a very interesting choice by the author. Most of my critiques regard some spelling/grammar errors and a bit of a language difference, which I think could have been easily avoided with a professional edit and/or some beta readers. For me, it read a bit too much like a first draft with a lot of "extra" that could've been cut to make it a little tighter. The characters, for the most part, fell a little flat for me. I did appreciate that the romantic subplot was not an insta-love, but I think the development of the relationship could've been done a little better in terms of how it got from her not liking him at all to her falling in love with him.
There were a few sections that I felt could've been excluded or needed some additional development and/or attention. The first would be the sexual assault that happens at Mrs. Griffin's going away party, when the guy who was fired attacks Milly. We didn't really get to see how that assault affected her, as a trauma like that would affect even the strongest of people. Milly didn't seem affected by it very much at all, and because of that it felt as though it was only included in the story to give Dean a reason to come to her defense. In fact, the only response to trauma that we ever see from Milly is when her mind splits after hearing about Mrs. Griffin dying.
Another section in the story is when she goes shopping with (I'm sorry, I don't remember her name), I feel this scene wasn't necessary at all and could've been cut out since the daughter of the rich guy wasn't ever mentioned again in the story.
The love story, for me, was uncomfortable being as though Milly is 17 and Dean is (I think the author mentioned about 23?) While I am not against age gaps at all, my husband is 6 years older than I am. However, age gaps that include a teenager just make the situation creepy, because your maturity level at 17 is not the same as it is at 23 or 24. On top of that, he's her boss (sort of) until we find out that he isn't actually her boss. Still, it was just weird and uncomfortable for me.
All in all, I did not particularly enjoy it enough to read the rest of the series, though I do wish the author the best, and am grateful for her letting me read her novel for free.
Special Minds is a really unique story, with a concept that's new, refreshing and totally unlike anything I've read before!
My favorite thing about this book was the fact that even though it's a sci-fi novel, you don't realize that until you're like 30% in. I liked that I got to see Milly's 'normal' life before delving into the sci-fi part.
The characters were well built and real, their story enjoyable and the overall experience was a good one!
I finished Special Minds in one day, not because it was short, but because it was irresistible. :)
The ending though. A cliffhanger! That's SO unfair! I'm dying of curiosity here!!!
I guess I'll just have to wait for the next book in the series...
I think this book is very unique! I enjoyed it! This book kept me reading more. I wanted to see what this book was about. I thought when I read the title it would be about a genius or something but I enjoyed the story because it was not what I expected too. I got drawn into the story with Milly and I think book two will be great as well. *This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.*
I was given a free copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. The concept and even the blurb for this novel was very interesting and honestly I was a little excited to dive in and figure out what the book was really talking about.
I thought it was going to be somewhere along the lines of a sci-fi but it wasn't really like that. The novel was written a little awkwardly. There were several lines that could've been worded differently and simply, there were also some grammatical errors. It almost seems like this was the first/rough draft that should've been revised more carefully.
It took me a few chapters in to keep my interest in finding out what was going on. I couldn't even relate to the characters in the story, I felt like they were all over the place with their emotions, thoughts, and actions. The official start of the lead character's relationship seemed rushed and almost sudden with their confession of loving each other. There were a lot of questions left unanswered for me like A lot of things didn't make sense to me, there was even a scene where I mean the novel tried to explain the science behind it... but also just brushed it off to "You could ask the doctor, it's kind of hard to explain" type of response.
I didn't realize this was book one out of a series! It kind of ended abruptly, but I think I can predict what happens next. I really appreciate the author giving me a free copy of her book. I think it is an interesting story line, something I've definitely never read anything like before. I won't be reading the rest of the series, but I hope for other readers that their questions would be answered the more they indulge in the series.
An addictive read - especially the beginning I couldn’t stop reading because I just wanted to know what was going to happen. Some bits seemed a bit jumpy and could have flowed better.
I enjoyed the story and am intrigued as to what will happen next. There could of been a bit more background information - ( what was the company, more about Dean, and a lot more about Mila and Dane). Hopefully this will all be in book 2.
I was sent this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. I liked it a lot more than I expected. Special Minds is so unique and fast paced. It was a great short read. I can see how it could be confusing because the main character has limited information about her situation but it didn’t really take away from the story itself. I found the romance to be a bit instalovie but it was still sweet and I adore the love interest. I enjoyed reading from the main characters perspective though on the surface she seems a little too perfect. I really liked this book and am so ready for the next one.
This novel made me laugh. I really enjoyed the plot, the characters were very charismatic and the twists of the book were interesting. All in all, I would recommend Special Minds to people of ages 14-28 even though it has an 18+ rating, which I assume was given only because of the alcohol mentioned in the book. Special Minds is for those who like urban fantasy and also for those who aren't afraid to try out new authors.
3.5 * I was given a free copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.
When I read the title of the book, I was thinking something about an uber smart brain or something.. Or maybe something like reading minds.. Hmm.. I am a little confused after the book..
That being said here is my review. Plot : 3 (The beginning was good. But I kinda lost the plot after the mind split) Main Characters : 4 Chemistry between the Leads : 4 Side Characters : 3 Feel/Emotions : 3 Twists : 3.5 Writing Style: 4
** Contains some spoilers** Proceed only if you have read the book... Here are my thoughts : Like I mentioned the beginning was great.. Mili's character is well-thought and completely over-shadows Dean's character.. She is smart and super-independent and a complete asset to the firm.. But a PA getting a house and car and to top it complete ownership of the firm?? Doesn't happen to normal people.. But I accept it as I find something fishy (in a good sense) with Mrs.Griffin (I have a nagging doubt that Mrs.Griffin's case is also similar to Mili, because of the cliff hanger at the end) ..Everything is going fine and then her mind splits.. why ??.. You know they say that whenever a mind faces extreme stressful situations, it suffers from multiple personality disorder.. Where the mind creates a new personality to handle such situations.. In this case, the split personality just comes out..like a clone but with a mind connection to Mili?? and is mingling with Dean's split ??
How are they going to manage that ?? I think they might be like some meta-human, since it doesn't sound genetic.. But I liked the Mili-Dean scenes.. But I am hoping there is a big dark twist to the plot to provide the justification of the mind split..And then we have the cra-cra ex-employee who knows their secret ?? Hmm.. maybe there is some organization behind it.. Might make it a little interesting..
PS : Though I agree it would be intriguing to know what would happen if one of the personalities die.. Case in point, Mrs.Griffin.. I think.. But I've read sooo many books, this idea is just instinct..
(Disclaimer – I received a copy from the Author. This does not affect my review.)
Review: I don’t do romance. I was told this had some paranormal/urban fantasy elements to it. 29% was the first mention of anything paranormal. I would have personally liked to have seen more of that side, vs the romance. Just not my cup of tea. That being said, it was very well written and the story really wasn’t that bad.
The paranormal element to it was pretty much she split herself in two. Would have been fun to see her explore this side more, maybe use her other half to do stuff. But that wasn’t the story, her other half was her ‘happy’ side. To pretty much help her understand her emotions and to get the guy.
Don’t have a huge selection to use as reference, romance wise. But I liked how it wasn’t an instant into her pants kind of thing. The relationship took time to unfold. The only sex scene it when into, it kind of brushed over it. Didn’t go into details, wasn’t really expecting that but was glad it did.
(Spoilers – Not really – Stuff that bugged me)
She works out a lot, like everyday. Uses a punching bag everyday, yet couldn’t react to being attacked twice. Yet the third time she turned into a ninja. (Was very entertaining though)
She is 17 why would being alone last few years be a big thing. 2291 she refers to herself as nearly turning 13, then goes on to refer her friend as childhood friend. Why would you need to mention that when you clearly stated you were 12. Just seemed unneeded.
Oh, fuck me up in hell and give my bones to Cerberus – Was that a Mass Effect reference? 😀
Who takes a shower then goes to bed, wakes up and then takes another shower. She was also in the kitchen putting stuff in the fridge, then she goes to the bathroom to wash her hands.
This is a story of a seventeen year old Millicent Kale. She is trying to cope with the pain of losing her mother at a young age. Her boss Mrs. Griffin becomes a person who cares for her like a mother and soon the news of her retirement shocks Millicent to no extent. If that wasn't enough, she meets a sexy stranger Dean Write, who brings out the worst in her.
The meeting of the main leads is done differently from the most of the romance books I've read. I won't say that Millicent hates Dean from the moment they met. Its not an attraction either. She just expresses a feeling you get towards a total stranger who makes you feel obligated to some extent.
A few times, her thoughts made me crack up, but sometimes I just wanted her to suck it up and put the big girl panties on and deal with it.
Dean is a character that would warm your hearts with his gentle and sincere nature. There is not much we can learn about him in this story except for that he has a similar past like Millicent.
The instant hatred towards the antagonist couldn't be helped though he appears only in a few scenes.
Then another unique concept about this story is the special minds just as the title. You need to read the story to know what it is. There is still room for improvement and several new questions arise towards the end. Hoping to get the answers in the sequel.

Millicent Kale live with constant pain when her mental and psychological pain becomes physical, but she lives life as normally as she can by focusing completely on the task at hand. Then the closest person to her dies and everything changes for Milly - she finds out she is not quite human nor is she alone. As she has her breakdown her subconscious becomes another duplicate physical body and life is better again - for a while. Dean White is her new boss and she is trying to ignore him as much as she can even though her hard to ignore other self is telling her to give in and get involved with him. Eventually fate will not be denied, she finds out more about what she is and everything feels too good to be true until an ex-coworker takes revenge and she is suddenly entangled in a secret war she never knew existed.
This was a really clever story and I enjoyed the way it built up as it progressed. I loved all the plot's twists and turns that were there to surprise you - especially the one at the end (wow), It was well written and everything was clear and easy to understand. I could feel the thoughts and emotions of the characters and the love story element was kind of sweet too.
