Max had lived in Seattle her entire life. For years, she struggled to find a normal life for herself having been raised by a cruel and abusive father. One night, as she walked home after a particularly bad fight with him, in which he told her she was forbidden from seeing her younger brother, her anger unleashed a transformation she didn’t expect. Suddenly, her senses were keener. She was stronger, faster. Wolf-like. The rest of the night was blank. She woke up underground and was introduced to her true identity, as well as an entire world of others just like herself. They called themselves the Rexin and were led by Tulayna, young but strong. Tulayna offered to train Max to control her new abilities, under one that she not leave until that training was complete. Max wanted to go back to rescue her brother, but Tulayna might be the one thing that stopped her. At least for the time being.

Got to chapter 4 and then just quit. For a book with an 18+ warning, it reads like YA fiction. I was hoping for a more mature storyline and characters more akin to what I usually read. After three chapters, I was annoyed by the main character (although, to be fair, I'd probably be annoyed with most 18-year-old "kids"), and the suspension of reality that an emotionally immature 18-year-old could not only care for and support herself but also her 14-year-old brother in a modern day city is just a little bit too much for me.
It had potential, and while it wasn’t in your face with world building, it was really rush paced in both story and relations. I feel like both stories in it were more like fan fiction for a series I didn’t need to know anything about.
Max’s story - I feel like there could’ve been more. Talking with others like herself or maybe more confrontation with her father or involving Hayden more.
Anna’s - it dropped off like an unfinished fanfic. We don’t get the confrontation with her father. What if he had said no? It just cliffhangs what they’re about to face when the author could’ve extended the story a little longer to say something eloquent along the lines of ‘and he approved, they married, and they lived happily ever after the end’.
