Stripe, a little tiger cub, strolls into the jungle on his own and finds more adventure than he hoped for when he's chased by stinging bees and snapping crocodiles and ends up inside the mouth of a whale.
Stripe is written by Joanne Partis. It is a story about a young tiger named Stripe. He and his parents live right on the edge of a jungle. His parents always tell him to never go into the jungle alone because it is very, very dangerous. However, one day when his parents are napping, Stripes ventures into the jungle alone. A series of scary events occur for Stripe reminding him of exactly why he was to never enter the jungle alone. Eventually Stripe ends up back at home and makes the decision that he will not enter the jungle again alone for a very, very long time. This book is a kid-friendly reader and makes for a quick read aloud as well. There are several animals that fill the pages, each doing what they do best. The moral of the story is an age old one of listening to your parents/guardians. The illustrations are phenomenal and very child friendly. Great book!
Stripe's parents fall asleep and, despite their warnings to not go into the jungle alone, Stripe wanders off into the mass of trees. He meets several animals who apparently want to eat/hurt him (bees, crocodiles, etc.) but makes it back home in one piece and decides to not wander off alone again. I think it's supposed to be a moral lesson to listen to your parents, but I'm not such a fan of children's books in which the lovable and cute main character almost gets eaten several times in just the few pages of the book! Stripe was an ADORABLE tiger and we picked this one up thinking it would be about the jungle, animals, etc. Nope. It's a "listen-to-your-parents-or-you-could-die" book.
The pictures did seem to interest my son, though. Ha.
My almost-five-year-old son picked this book out from our local library last week. The cover artwork was too irresistible for him.
Stripe in an almost-perfect picture book. It almost went on my have-to-buy-it list, but not quite, at least, not yet.
The story is engaging enough -- it is simple, easy-to-understand, with elements of surprise and danger. And Stripe saves himself, which is always a bonus in a children's book. The artwork inside is just as irresistible as the artwork on the cover, and appeals very much to an almost-five-year-old boy. This book just didn't quite keep his attention. I don't know if it is missing the nebulous "X factor" or if my son was just really tired.
Colorful and cute illustrations accompany sweet text about a little tiger cub - who has many misadventures - while exploring the jungle (after his mama told him not to!).
I think I liked this book better than the toddlers. The first time I read this, they weren't as into it as the second time. I think it helped that I added commentary on the animals he runs into.
