Cheobawn, Black Bead Ear, warrior witch, and exile from the domes, now sails with Samwell Wheelwright down the great River Liff. Without her omeh, without Blackwind Pack, without the comforting presence of the land above the Escarpment, she must make her way to Dunauken, the Lowlander city on the edge of Orson's Sea. What she must do there is anyone's guess. The Mothers know but she ran away before they could tell her that part of their plans.
Tam is not a patient person. He and the rest of Blackwind Pack have come down the cliff, hunting her. It has been 2000 years since any female of the domes has set foot in the Lowlands, and Megan and Cheobawn's presence is a barely contained secret. But time is running out -- to keep her Pack alive, Cheobawn must get to Dunauken first and face the darkness that has consumed all her timelines.
J.D. Lakey is an award-winning author of science fiction and fantasy stories. Her lyrical writing style and passionate connection to her characters pull you in and take you on an emotional journey of discovery in expertly-crafted worlds where futuristic technologies reside amidst primordial landscapes.
Her love of writing stemmed from growing up on a cattle ranch and farm under the endless star-filled Montana skies as far from civilization as anyone in the twentieth century could get. There, she explored the finer nuances of silence and the endless possibilities of the imagination. The shifting of fortunes finally granted her the time to gather all the stories and give them flesh. She currently lives in San Diego, California where she divides her time between her writing, commuting on the I-5 to her day job, and convincing her grandchildren that magic exists.
Stunning, J.D. Lakey is an amazing writer. The characters are great, I love the pack. I also love how respectfully Cheobawn is of her enemies, regretting when she has to kill them, making friends with them when possible. She is growing into her role of All Mother. In fact this book in the series can be summarized by that last sentence.
The description is incredible, I can see everything happening. I feel comfortable in this world run by women with men also loved and valued or else terribleness equally shared by both genders. I love the prayers to the goddess. The hyper presence of nature.
The action in this one is great, couldn't put it down and off to read the series finale... So glad to own them all in my Kindle library.
I read the first book of this series a couple of years ago, adding to my like when new releases came out. I recommend this series of you want to be relocated to another place and time! Excellent writing, plotting, characters, and world development! This was a grand bit of fun!
