Healed: How Mary Magdelene Was Made Well

Rate this book
Mary Magdalene, first witness to Jesus’s resurrection, has been one of the most misunderstood of all the saints, maligned for centuries as a prostitute, despite there being nothing in the Bible to indicate anything of the sort. The Bible does say that Mary was possessed by demons, and that Jesus healed her. Today, we would call Mary’s problem not possession but a mental health condition. Author Kate Morehead says, “A saint is someone who walks ahead of us, guides us, and keeps us on the path to life . . . . For us, they are role models. Like us, they struggled and journeyed, but they drew closer and each one of them carved out a different path to God. “It is my hope and prayer that by telling the truth of her story, Mary Magdalene might take her rightful place as the guide for those of us who struggle with mental health issues (and if we are truly honest, that means each and every one of us) . . . . It is time for us to let her show us her beautiful, unique, and sometimes frightening path to true health. It is a path that leads directly to heart of God.”

It is a short, easy read, but enlightening and helpful, especially for people like me who struggle with their mental health.

The opening section on why Mary Magdalene was deemed a prostitute and why Christianity, in spite of the teaching of St Paul, came to equate sex with sin, is masterful.

Dean Kate Moorehead again reveals to her readers great insights that are practical in everyday life, this time through the story of Mary Magdalene. She does a wonderful job of clarifying who Mary Magdalene was and exploring why she has been maligned for centuries, both of which are certainly worth exploring. Dean Kate has also highlighted what we can learn from Mary Magdalene’s life and how she can be an inspiration to us all.

I really enjoyed this book. Kate Moorehead points out very well that mental illness is not just for the few, but we all have some form of it due to the fallen world that we live in. She questions many aspects of Mary Magdalene that has been written and provides the reader to ponder Mary's mental health as it would be look upon in today's world. She explains how thoughts and emotions affect all of us, which leads to ask ourselves about our own mental health.
