I have Broad shoulders. I’ve had strangers ask me if I was “German” or a “swimmer” more times than I can remember. Which why yes I am ty and I used to hate my “manly” shoulders but I’m learning to accept them. I’m taller than average as well, I was also blessed w a large chest. And for most of my life I had low self esteem so my natural gait was hunched over, slumped, hiding. To open my chest and stretch my neck was way out of my comfort zone, crazy to say. Now I have the self love down, self esteem restored, but I am left w a dowagers hump and horrendous posture. But that’s ending today. I’ve learned so many tips, relearned how to properly sit and stand and walk and bend lol. I had no idea those things were critical. I loved the part where she mentioned the East have a saying that you can see how much care a person will need one day when they’re elderly based on their posture now. That hit home. I also have been religiously training at the gym for the last year desperately trying to get fit after baby number 2 and wondering why my hips are always soooo tight, my back and neck are so stiff. My hamstrings. I didn’t even realize that my chest was stiff until I tried stretching it. I had no idea that I obviously wasn’t getting proper range in my exercises because of that tightness. I am 33 and determined to fix my posture now as part of my healthy lifestyle. The only thing I wish I had more information on is what different forms of exercise I should do to help my posture. What routine. I can’t just not work out for 3 weeks so I wonder if Pilates would be acceptable hmm. Also I found out about this book by watching her videos on YouTube and they’re a must watch. Tons of helpful information and instruction on proper forms or exercises for us visual learners.
I’ve been plagued with neck pain and migraines for years, and it’s only recently that I’ve actually become aware of the link between my symptoms and my posture. Michelle Joyce’s info and approach are eye opening, and I’m super encouraged at how making just a few adjustments and doing a few stretches has already led to noticeable relief.
I met author Michelle Joyce at South by Southwest 2018. As you might expect, she has excellent posture! This book is full of information about maintaining a healthy posture, including suggested exercises. I especially enjoyed the "Bonus Section" about the history of American posture.
This book is short and sweet. I wish it went into more depth but for the cost I think it was worth it. I just wish they explained how to better have good posture across all areas of life instead of just doing 2-5 pages on office posture, car posture etc. It left me with more questions.
