Sometimes we need a break from the reading that we are doing and Meg Benjamin’s series has done just that for me! Venus is very well written, has a great plot (with mystery, drama, and hunky goodness) and kept me coming back for more. When I read my romance novels I find (sometimes) that I have to try to get over little things in order to really enjoy it (minor mistakes in plot, too much detail about the things we don’t really care about, etc.). That is not the case with this novel.

Docia and Cal are completely believable characters and I found myself rooting for them and going through the struggles they are going through. I cannot wait to see what happens next with all of these characters and can only guess what will happen when all of their relatives come to town. Cal, the vegetarian veterinarian, and Docia, the trust fund baby, definitely add spice to the little town of Konigsburg, Texas and I can only imagine what is to come!

Another freebie through Amazon that I liked. I feel like I'm on a roll. As the new vet in town, Cal has all the single ladies panting after him but he only has eyes for Docia, the aloof owner of a local bookstore. For her part, she's trying to fit into the small town of Konisburg and not make waves, which is backfiring on her big time when she unwittingly makes enemies with the town busybody. Hot sex, a snarling cat, a pathetic chihuahua and good food make this is a damn fun read.

2.5* There was nothing glaringly bad about this book, just nothing especially thrilling about it, either. The writing was decent, but a little too bland. Overall, the story idea should have worked better, but something about the writing ended up utilitarian instead of moving. Since I'm not a writer, I really can't put my finger on what didn't work. So 2,5*. It was okay and I finished it, but nothing special.

Characters

Cal Toleffson – The vet, who is also the newest member of the small town of Konigsburg. He brings so much more than his skill with animals to the town- the grapevine is all abuzz with who will be the lucky girl to get with him.

Docia Kent – Trying too hard or just hiding from herself, with Docia you never can tell – when she spots Cal however – that’s a decision that was definately not hard to make.

The Plot

After living in Konigsburg, Texas for two years, you would think the town would have embraced a newcomer by now, not so in Konigsburg – everything was politics and Docia Kent was most definitely not politically correct.

Literally hiding her bushel under a light due to a past break-up she gets on with her days as best as she can. When she spots not only the newest resident of Konigsburg but someone who makes her sit up and take notice, she treads a weary path as everything is not always as it seems in small town Konigsburg.

Vet Cal Toleffson knows exactly what he sees when he sets eyes on Docia – a goddess and he intends to get to know her better. Deciding that only one night is all they can give to each other, their plans becomes farcical when the entire town decides to give their opinion on any plans they have for romance.

However with all the comedy around town, there is also something dark slithering through and it seems to have earmarked Docia and all she loves dear. With the town not embracing her with open arms, can she rely on Cal or is he just bidding his time to disappoint her as well?

Surprise Element

There was a lot of little gems in this story. Not only was the setting a pleasure (small town settings does it for me), but the characters that goes with it made me sit up and had a laugh, more laughs and i fell in love – even with the weirdest of the bunch.

The fact that the mystery runs parallel to the romance between Cal and Docia was also another treat – and it really was a mystery – Ms. Benjamin has that little extra something with her tension filled scenes that you really won’t want to put this one down until you have reach the very end.

Predictability

With small town you never know what to expect. The fact that both Docia and Cal were not from Konigsburg, made all the difference to the story. Everything else going on was more or less par for the course and Ms. Benjamin run with it and i really like her take on what these people get up to in this small town.

Smut/Ick Factor

A fair amount of fun was to be had by all. These two made up for the time they were apart every chance they get. No shy wall flower was Docia and Cal was just waiting on someone like her – believe me they got it on as much as they could…

I feared for the sanity of this little town – the heat flowing off these two was just phenomenal.

Positive

A new to me author, Meg Benjamin has certainly made me sit up and take a second look with this wonderful read. Docia and Cal are really the life of the party and they make the most of the situation they are in and I had fun with them.

This book had a little of everything, the warring community, the dysfunctional family situation, the love interest – that was a laugh a minute. Then there is the psycho neighbour with the even more psychotic dog – as i said – a laugh a minute.

The town dynamics is so accurate of what small town living is like – you never know what the grapevine is up to at any hour of the day.

Ms. Benjamin does a brilliant job with the small details like descriptions of places and the situation at hand and this made a whole lot of difference to the shape of this book.

A big hit in this book for me was how Ms. Benjamin highlighted all of Docia’s assets – she was a full figured goddess and she had everything in all the right places – Ms. Benjamin dressed her nicely, she gave her the allure to have men breaking out in sweat and she had that holier than thou air (when she wanted to) to annoy the hell out of family, friends and warring neighbours…

I can’t say enough about how funny the characters in this book were, there were not only ha ha giggles funny moment – but they were also so sarcastically rude – I cracked up with laughter.

The town and it’s personalities were very well developed, i knew where the town was coming from and i got to know the stories behind local feuds and other minor happening in the town.

There was a good pace to this book, and some characters were larger than life and although no one really scary, there was definately an eclectic bunch of people floating around Konigsburg.

Negative

The one little niggle that stood out for me was the fact that that there was no chatter between Docia and Cal. With a relationship that is in the getting to know you stage, Docia and Cal spend more time getting their smut on or caught up in towns business than actually any quality time on them as a couple..

This, i only picked up on at the end of the book – everything else was so nicely done, I almost missed the fact that these two did not spend anytime talking to each other about themselves as a unit.

Covers

I did like this cover, I am not a big fan of cover with actual face view – as i like to form my own opinion of what the main protags are like, however this cover does a really good job of what i picture Docia to look like.

I'm always surprised for some reason when ebooks are as good as any traditionally published book I've read. This is certainly one of those.

I loved Cal, the vegetarian veterinarian in Texas, and Docia the trust fund baby who just wants to make it on her own. Their courtship is sweetly awkward at the start before steaming up and boiling over into full-on love and passion. The suspense was drawn out well, with bits and pieces dropped throughout the novel, and the culprit a bit of a surpise.

Definitely looking forward to the next book.

A fun, sexy contemporary romance in the tradition of Jennifer Crusie. A tall, good-looking, good guy hero and a tall, good-looking, bookish heroine match wits against one another and some serious baddies lurking beneath the placid surface of small-town Konigsburg, Texas. I normally don't turn to Samhain for straight-up contemporary romance, but I'm definitely going to be reading the rest of the books in this fun series.

This was unexpected, though I'm not sure why. I think I thought it would be smuttier, but it's fine that it wasn't. That's not to say there was no sex, but a lot of it was fade-to-black. And again, it's fine. It left room for lots of story. I've read a few stories recently where the female MC was tall, which worked out really well for the slightly taller male MC. I often read stories where the girl is the 5'3" little pixie, and those stories are fine as well, but it's kinda nice to read about tall people. I'm only 5'3" myself. :-)

In this one, we have Cal, who recently moved to town. Docia moved there a few years ago, but is still considered mostly an outcast due to a really vile woman, Margaret, who pretty much runs the town. I still don't get what Margaret has against Docia, but she's got a huge stick wedged up her ass about it. Doesn't help that Docia catches Cal's eye pretty quickly when Margaret had her grand life plan set on Cal, the vet. For her part, Docia is gunshy on relationships because of who she is. Her parents have money, and an old boyfriend used her to to try to get to her father. She doesn't know that Cal has no clue who she is, but she's wary that he might be hiding his knowledge and somehow looking for his own "in" with her dad.

In the middle of all of this are what appear to be random break-ins at Docia's bookstore. Then things escalate to scary situations, but it all works out in the end.

Cute, well-written story. I'd read more from this author.

Dialogue so real and funny you'll wish you had overheard it at a local bar; Texas-size H/H in Docia Kent and Cal Toleffson(although he's a transplant from the Midwest), who have jobs they love that don't involve spies, corporations, or law enforcement; a suspense plot that gives a new wag to an old dog without detracting one iota from the romance; sexy love scenes that are hot and tender and sometimes even humorous; and a small town filled with individuals, some of them flawed and foolish--these are just some of the reasons I loved this book.

Venus in Blue Jeans is the first of Meg Benjamin's Konigsburg books. I'm thrilled that she has written/will be writing the other Toleffson brothers' stories. Count me among those who will definitely be returning to Konigsburg.

1.8 stars.

The story was forgettable. I couldn't remember what happened in the story between the sessions I sat down to read.

The writing got on my nerves. At times it was extremely disjointed. Unrelated sentences kept popping up at random. The plot was anything but concise. There were a lot of subplots that were shortchanged so much I wondered why they were there at all.

There was no chemistry between the leads and they hardly spent any time together. I had a hard time believing in their HEA in such a short time span.

I had so many problems with this book the best thing I can say is I didn't hate it.

This was a cute fun read, my first by the author. Her style reminds me of a cross between Jennifer Crusie and Kristen Higgins: light and witty with a happy ending and a few pets thrown in. ;-)

Overall I'd give this a 3.75 star rating. I liked it but didn't go out of my way to continue reading. I probably would read more by her.

This was a HOT book and it was exactly the type of book I needed for my vacation. This was recommended to me by a fellow reader who heard my plea to get away from overbearing alpha type males. Nothing a hot, sweet, vet can't cure I assure you!

The writing itself is probably not worth 4*s but my enjoyment of the book was, I'll look for more of this author's books in the future.

I got this book free on my Kindle and wasn't sure what it would be like. The description sounded really cute and to be honest I thought there would be alot more steamy scenes just from the cover. I have to say I really liked this book, more than I thought I would. I will for sure read the next three in the series.

This was an OK book by an author with medium writing skills who writes lukewarm love scenes. I liked the hero, we were given a lot of his inner dialogues. The rest pretty much was boring.

If it had not been a freebie from amazon.com, I would have been spared the lost time. Next time I'll actually look at some reviews before taking a freebie.

You really do get what you pay for.

I had never heard of this author but picked up the ebook free on promotion from Amazon. It was an entertaining, sometimes humorous contemporary romance, which reminded me a little in style to Jennifer Crusie's books. The story is set in a small town, and Benjamin does a good job giving that quaint, small town vibe. The characters were appealing and kept me turning the pages. Good beach read.

This book was adorable. It was really sweet and totally believable. Docia and Cal were all kinds of cute.

There was nothing alarming about the book. Margaret probably needs a lot of therapy but honestly, don’t we all know somebody like Margaret. The people that are kind of backwards in their thinking and make up grudges when there aren’t any. But it wasn’t anything that stopped Docia or Cal from doing whatever they wanted to do.

The true stars in this book, however, were Nico and Pepe. Those two were all kinds of adorable. Especially Pepe. The way Docia and Cal adopted him was super sweet and kind of showed how there truly is a pet for everyone. And Pepe was not for Margaret.

I also loved how Cal was a vegetarian and was burly and hairy and all of those adjectives that are traditionally used for manly men. He wasn’t an overly possessive man nor was he overbearing. Not that Docia would have stood for it. He was who he was and he wasn’t about to apologize for it.

Docia was much the same. She wasn’t going to conform to the town standard just so people would accept her.

The relationship between the two developed rather quickly. Which is fine but I didn’t particularly like it. Especially because Docia was having doubts almost the entire time.

Besides that, I totally recommend it.

Docia Kent moved to Konigsburg, Texas to get a fresh start. After her ex-fiancee truly revealed what he was all about, she dumped him and moved away. Now she owns a bookstore which she loves but the town of Konigsburg is still not as welcoming as she would hope after being there for so long and she has made an enemy with town busybody who wants her gone.

Cal Toleffson moved to town to partner in a veterinary business. Cal wasn't looking for love but the moment he sees Docia he is hooked. She is everything a woman should be but what happens when it appears someone is out to get Docia and old triggers for Docia arise? Can she trust Cal or is he not everything that he appears to be?

Loved this, the town is small town and full of characters. The animal sidekicks are wonderful and compliment the story. This is one of these books you pick up and have a smile on your face throughout. Definitely checking out more in this series.

First time I’ve read author

I enjoyed the book but didn’t love it. The H/h were well developed but I felt there were inconsistencies about how they acted from their thought processes. There were inconsistencies with the suspense and setting too. The town was portrayed as small but with tourist buses but I never knew what the tourist attraction was. The female villain and her control of the town association was far fetched. The relationships with the heroine and her father were strange. The mystery and attempted murder was not believable either. It was a light read. There were detailed sex scenes.

Talk about a story that full of twists, gives you several smaller of points of view, keeps you guessing until the end, all while two people meet, get to know each other, and fall in love. The book is non-stop and is a fun read. I loved getting to know Docia and Cal. They seemed to really compliment each other and have a very natural fit, along with a lot of sizzle. A feisty cat and a protective little dog almost steal the show, but it is Cal that is the swoonworthy hero for sure.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review from the publisher through Netgalley.

This book is very Texas, it is just all about small town Texas life. Not necessarily a bad thing, it just is.
Docia and Cal were nice characters but the plot was just ok. The insta love happened pretty quick and there was minimal drama between the two, then the plot floundered into this mystery of why someone was vandalizing Docia's bookstore.
It was hard to keep my interest.
Also, the cover is misleading, it is stated repeatedly that Cal has a 'mat of hair on his chest' and the man on the cover is clean shaven. Just sayin'...

DNF I never do this but I just couldn’t keep going and not because it was terrible, it just wasn’t anything! The writing is decent and nothing hugely wrong but it’s just boring. I don’t know how else to put it. The characters seem great but its like we’re just trudging thru their day to day without anything noteworthy happening. Margaret is beyond annoying and pointless. And all of those crazy long foreign names, nothing Texas about that! Just came down to not wanting to waste a few more hours on a book that hasn’t gone anywhere as of the 38% mark.

Cal Toleffson is a down to earth, Iowa farm boy turned vet who's recently relocated to Konigsburg, TX.
Docia Kent grew up as the socialite daughter of a wealthy Texas developer, but has kept that quiet as she's started her new life as owner of the bookstore in Konigsburg. The attraction is mutual and hot when the two meet, but problems at her store and with another female business owner keep them hopping. When an attempt is made to kill her, the two must figure out how to work through their attraction and their problems. Explicit sex.

“Venus in Blue Jeans “(Konigsburg Book1)

What a book, what a great author! This book started with a newer vet in a small town in Texas,a woman who owned a bookstore and a few other real characters! The curmudgeon of the town has it in for the bookstore owner and tries to block her at every turn, then gets really mad when she starts dating the single vet! Tempers flare, then a break in at the bookstore and finally a kidnapping.
It’s all there, romance, mystery and just good reading. Can’t wait to see what else this author has to offer.

More than just a sweet little romance

I liked this book. It caught my interest and kept it. I couldn't wait to finish the story and find out the ending. So okay, here's a bit more information. There is jealousy, revenge, people doing bad things, cats, dogs, and several sex scenes. This isn't erotica, in my opinion. I hate that, but it is descriptive. So if that bothers you, skip the book.

Ok

A little bit of mystery, a little bit of romance and a bit of vengeance. Now this is prejudice of me, and I feel bad....I don’t care to much about female characters that are 6 feet tall. It’s not so much about height but more about imagination. When I read a book, I become the book and have images in my head input the context, setting, characters- unfortunately it’s difficult for my imagination to deal with a six foot female.

Mystery and romance

Dolce Kent runs a bookstore in Koningsburg, Texas. She moved to Koningsburg to escape her parents and a broken relationship. As the "new kid in town", it has not been easy then she meets Cal Tolefson, the new veterinarian in town and their attraction is immediate. Unknown to Dolce, a possibly valuable piece of Texas history has been hidden in her shop and the people that want it are not afraid to kill to get it.

Small town romance with a bit of mystery. Handsome young Veterinarian Cal is new to town. He notices the beautiful Docia (he refers to as Venus) when he is out one night with friends. Docia is also an outsider as a new arrival in Konigsburg operating a book store. Not everyone in town is receptive to the new arrival Docia. But in a typical small town a mystery arises and Docia is forced to depend on Cal. Will sparks fly?

Moutain man falls for Amazon

I liked that the characters weren't typical. I liked the hook and pacing. I hated the plot. The mystery that really wasn't. The fact that the characters were stupid enough to not take any precautions. How hard is it to change a lock and buy a motion activated camera and light. Hell, buy a gun it's Texas for goodness sake. Something to show me you fear for your life.

Surprised

First book I have read by this author and was pleasantly surprised. A Texas romance with a few twist and turns. He is the new vet in town and she running a bookstore without the help of her family. Both outsiders in this small Texas town. Not going to give any more a way. You will not be disappointed!!
